Great University for busy adults
Not sure why UMGC has so many bad reviews. I transferred from Community College, and they accepted 70 credits. My adviser helps me a lot and I am getting all my classes played by FAFSA. Also, because I transferred from CC, I got reduced rate for the classes $200 per credit "Complition scholarship". So far so good I am planning to complete my Bachelor next Summer 2024.

+1

UMUC, although I provided multiple forms of proof of my residency in the state of Maryland for OVER a year. Refused to provide in-state tuition. What kind of organization, knowing that someone is using VA benefits from a 100% disabled parent and also knowing that my partner was using his own VA benefits to attend UMUC while enlisted still (from the SAME house) would try to charge you out of state tuition? UMUC. No other organization tried to do this not UMD, not UB (University of Baltimore), not Towson, and not CCBC where I settled instead because they gave the most value for my VA benefits. They tried to do this because I previously lived in California for a few years. I had well exceeded their 3 months in the state by the time I applied, I was at over a year of living in Maryland again. To top it off, I never received log-in info or a bill until just a few days ago when they said they were going to send it to collections if not paid. I keep organized email folders for every company I interact with or order from.
The last e-mail said, "You will receive a bill if there was one and login info within 48 hours", that was on June 11, it is now November 30. All around horrible organization. My SO struggles dealing with them after attending a real brick and mortar NATIONALLY accredited University for his BA. I should've known these people were scam artists when they tried to say he wasn't enrolled and had Sallie Mae come after him for payments because they were too lazy to send the proper enrollment forms for weeks in a row. Horrible institution. There are cheaper and more reputable schools out there.

I noticed on my credit report that there is a collection whereas this information is unverified. I have not signed any contract relating to opening an account with this university. I did not attend this school and I am not familiar with this account.

I am an intelligent astute student with a few challenges faced by deaths in the family. I was advised to come back to *** based on my mental challenges dealing with adversity and lack of focus that caused me to leave my education at various institution, *** encouraged me to continue with them and got me back, I had good grades up the point where an *** professor with no custom of adult education in the US did not grade me because the document loader failed and I completed 7 of 8 units then the unit that ascertain the requirements if failed on the last unit 8th he lay the premise for me to fail a charge of $4k out of financial aid.

I decided not to pay. I went to UMUC, I think someone from somewhere set a trap for me there. They approved my financial aid then allowed me to believe that they will start me with 12 credits and a start date, there was an Instution they pulled out and they said I never paid. *** failed me on unit based on the bad approach or tenure of their lead for the doctorate, did not respond to emails for help for assignments. UMUC pulled this on me, I think both are affiliated like nepotism and enacted their hate. *** is associated with them they pulled a dirty trick on me. I geuss possible link or affiliation sponsors. They blamed it on Dept of Ed, then said something else. They then generated a bill for almost $3600 dollars, hustling at the level of *** Change of time square reversed to old days to current day. I swore at them in email, said I would curse them, never threatened any action or violence, they destroyed my dream they promised and they took revenge based on ***, meanwhile *** did not pull up ***. I am intelligent part autistic mild, I am not violent do not get angry, I do not have to tell anyone about my mild autism, They did not correlate transcripts sent electronically and now sending me bills.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID, and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me. I was not getting a transcript from *** University based on a dispute, that prevented me from getting admission, so I done a comprehensive search and found some old transcripts, they accepted me at University.I had an anxiety attack have an issue with the previous school, I would never have got the transcript from *** and that would have stalled my admission. I just happened to have one transcript in old archive and that saved the day. Before that I felt I was victimized pending this transcript to be granted financial aid. I am grateful it was resolved without involving *** whom I had a dispute with. I felt that the sponsors were common and may have barred me, but it is this one issue which got resolved, got financial aid. Thank you appreciated you may close the concern that the school UMUC channeled adequately.

I have been trying to enroll for over two years to this college! I have done everything asked of me I even drove 2 hours to the college park location. I’m very aggravated at this point because this college is making it completely hard to continue my education. First it was they need to verify my identity okay I went to the college to speak to someone and they copied my license they told me it would take 2 days to update (2018) was never updated or put in my file I was informed over the phone it had to be mailed to compliance I wasn’t able to email or fax. So I mailed it. Then I needed to send my transcripts I had them fax waited weeks never heard back from anyone or seen any updates I called they needed to be mailed. I’ve mailed everything spent over 100.00 on getting these documents and sending them and nothing has been updated I’ve sent emails to get no response from compliance I’ve called and asked to speak directly or even deliver the documents directly and nothing! This is by far the worse college ever!!!!!! I have did my part I have recorders of emails phone called and mail! It’s been over a year and nothing has been updated!!!!

UMUC will address the student directly regarding this matter.

I attended UMUC about a year or two ago. I applied for what would be my second term and had my Federal Pell Grant in order and also a scholarship I had received, so my term was completely covered which I doubled check on my account and was actually to receive a refund with left over money. I started to notice that after a week or two my pell grant was still in pending status and they had yet to add my scholarship to my account, so I began to email them and inquire about it. I was told that the pell grant was still pending because they was saying I didn’t have enough credits to be considered full time which was a lie and I verified that. When it came to the scholarship they informed me that it should post to my account soon. I decided to drop out of UMUC after they kept refusing to apply my aid to my account which was before the classes even started for that term. Not long after dropping my classes I checked my account and found that my Federal Pell Grant and scholarship had been returned and my account had a $0 balance sense I dropped out before the classes started. A few months go by and I notice I am no longer allowed to access my account or my student email so I can keep records of everything especially after reading the reviews I read about this school. I attempted to email this school several times to try and get access back to my online account and student email was NEVER received a reply back.

Now it is August 2019 and I’m on my way out to work and I check my mail and find a letter from the Central Collection Unit stating I owe UMUC a balance of $3,608 and that they are going to start garnishing my wages. Now mind you I have literally not heard a word from this school sense I dropped the classes and all my aid was returned because yet again I dropped before the classes, but now I have them lettering saying they are taking 25% of my pay check. I have never been to court over this or received a court order, I have actually never received anything from this school in the form of a notice at all that I owed them money until I received this letter today. I keep my physical mail for a period of one year then I destroy it, so I have been able to go back and look and confirm that I have not received anything. From the sounds of the reviews this school seems to do this a lot. I wasn’t able to find this money I owe anywhere on my credit report to file a dispute. I don’t understand how a school can have if somebody’s aid accessed and not apply it, but then when the student drops out and the aid is returned with no issues they come back a couple years later and say that you owe them over $3,000. Then send a letter stating that they are going to garnish your wages without even giving you a prior notice that you even owe any money. If this isn’t resolved I will be following some of the others foot steps and seeking legal action against this because this is completely outrageous and I can assure you I do not owe them this money, but sense the access to my account and student email has been removed I can no longer access my account to prove it, but I’m sure everything has been erased including the emails in my student email account. Like I said I would like this resolved or I am seeking legal action.

On July 30th, 2019, I called to apply for UMUC. I spoke to a representative by the name of Cordero on the phone who told me I would have to pay the application fee of $50 in order to apply. I asked how much courses were first and foremost, to his reply of, "around $400 plus technology fees". Now, I felt this was a comfortable number and paid the fee. A week later, after my FAFSA had been applied, I learned that he had lied to me. The courses were $499 A CREDIT and Cordero lead me to almost being $6,500+ in debt. Instead of answering my question of "how much does each class cost?", he merely beat around the bush and answered in a way that would confuse me until the deadline which is bait-and-switch and unethical. Once I caught him in this lie and saw the jaw-dropping bill I would owe this semester, I contacted the head offices of UMUC to drop me out and see to it I would be refunded the $50 application fee. After a week, they dropped me out but stated they would have to "make a decision" on whether or not I should get my application fee back. This was a week ago. In this time frame, I have reached out twice asking for assistance on who I should contact directly about receiving this fee back to no avail. I am frustrated. This was a bait-and-switch tactic. Cordero was simply a glorified salesman trying to bait me to pay the fee without telling me the facts. It was unethical and downright illegal what he did and now that I caught him in the act, they are trying to stay silent and not give me my money back. How is this fair on any account? Instead of clearly stating "your courses will be $1,400 a class", you lie and then backpedal once caught? To hear radio silence from them is alarming. All I want is my application fee returned to me for the unethical practices this college is practicing to bait people into signing up.

I am rejecting this response because I have contacted UMUC almost 5 times already asking for the email addresses' or information to someone who could help. I emailed Cordero almost 3 times and your main student contact line as well. I have heard nothing back. If you were also going to get back to me, you would have already. You guys continue to lie right through you're teeth and it is appalling to see a university acting in such a childish manner. I am merely asking for the return of my $50 and the continual back-turning isn't going to solve anything. Even when you guys emailed me and I responded back asking for help on the refund issue, I heard silence back. I await your response ON HERE. I have spent too much time trying to contact UMUC's head departments and have heard ZERO back. It's an avoidance tactic.

ON JUNE 24, 2019, I CONTACTED UMUC REQUESTING A VERIFICATION OF ADMISSION DOCUMENTATION FOR MY REQUEST FOR TUITION REIMBURSEMENT. I SPOKE WITH AN ADVISOR WHO INFORMED ME I WOULD NEED TO SPEAK WITH THE OFFICE OF THE REGISTRAR. I SPOKE WITH THE OFFICE OF THE REGISTRAR WHO INFORMED ME THEY DO NOT PROVIDE SUCH DOCUMENTATION. THEY DID NOT PROVIDE CONTACT INFORMATION FOR WHOM COULD PROVIDE THE REQUESTED DOCUMENT THEY SIMPLY ADVISED THEY COULD NOT FULFILL THE REQUEST. AFTER GOING BACK AND FORTH WITH THE ASSISTANT REGISTRAR; I REQUESTED A SUPERVISOR TO CONTACT ME. MY REQUEST WAS NEVER ACKNOWLEDGED; I WAS THEN SIMPLY ADVISED THE REQUEST COULD NOT BE HONORED. I WAS THEN ADVISED TO SPEAK WITH ADMISSIONS. I COMMUNICATED WITH ADMISSIONS WHO ADVISED ME, A DETAILED LETTER IS ONLY MADE AVAILABLE BY THE REGISTRAR'S OFFICE. ON JUNE 27 2019, I REACHED OUT TO BOTH OFFICES AT THE SAME TIME REQUESTING A SUPERVISOR CONTACT ME. NO REPLY UNTIL TODAY JULY 8, 2019 FROM THE ASSISTANT REGISTRAR ADVISING MY REQUEST COULD NOT BE HONORED. I STILL HAVE YET TO RECEIVE THE REQUESTED LETTER NOR SPEAK WITH A SUPERVISOR. I HAVE NOW MISSED THE DEADLINE TO SUBMIT THE REQUEST FOR TUITION REIMBURSEMENT WHICH MEANS I WILL BE UNABLE TO ATTEND COURSES FOR THE 2019-2020 YEAR.

The student's concerns have been addressed and responded to.

I'm a online student of there's and no one told me prior to me registering for classes the my financial aid would be dropped. How am I suppose to get my degree and education if I don't have funds to pay for school? My classes were set to start on May 20th, and no one tried to reach out before this to tell me. So I had to pull out from all of my classes for Summer and Fall Semester this year. Yes I had a few rough semesters and didn't do well on my classes but that still isn't fair to a student like myself who is dedicated on earning her degree.

Customer Response • May 13, 2019

I’m not sure why I know I struggled with my classes this semester but that shouldn’t been a reason to drop my financial aid.

This university has taken all of my course information and is storing it all in their online ELMS system but has denied me access to retrieve all of this information. Since the program was online I did not have the ability to have all of this information in hand. They are storing the course information that I paid for but refuse to give me access to download it.

I started an application to University of Maryland, Unicversity College (UMUC) in Dec of 2018. After realizing that there was an application fee of $50 that could not be waived, I decided to go a different route. On Dec 7th, there was a 2 min 54 sec call from a male (I believe Shaquille) who confirmed that there would be a $50 application fee for me to move forward in the process. I explained that I was not interested if the fee was required. He was persistent & sent me an email for log in info.
Since I never had this issue when applying to schools the 1st time I went through college, I assumed my application would not continue until I paid them. I did not know that they would start to send me to collections.
On March 7th, I received an email from Monica C telling me to submit my Tuition assistance (I am deployed with the ***) for a class that I was registered for starting on March 18. After checking with 2 of the UMUC reps on the base I am at, they confirmed that I was not registered in any classes. They reassure me that I should be fine & there shouldn't be any charges to worry about. Case #*** open & closed with "I apologize for the confusion, it appears there is another student with your name in one of our classes. Please disregard." - Monica C
April 3rd, I get a collections notice from the UMUC office of student accounts stating that I owe $50. When I email back stating that this is incorrect, they tell me to call someone else.
I am deployed. I have enough to do & worry about on top of the time zone differences. Please help me resolve this since UMUC does not want to make this easy.
Let me know if you want any copies of the emails.

I began an application to University of Maryland University College on or around 6 April 2018. I created an account, but never submitted the application or sent any additional documents to the school. They now claim that by creating an account I "applied" and owe them a $100 application fee which they intend to send to collections in March 2019.

I am rejecting this response because:

UMUC did nothing to address the premise of my complaint. They have students acknowledge a $100 application fee before submitting any application materials. Nowhere do they indicate that this is in itself an application submission. They maintain that by checking a box acknowledging that the school charges an application fee, I am accepting a fee even if no application is subsequently submitted.

I was enrolled at *** and due to an expected emergency I ended up having to drop a class to start at a later date which I confirmed with a representative that there was a class starting a week later and that it would be fine if I enrolled in this class. I contacted *** this night because I tried to drop the class online but there was a problem with the website so I called to get assistance from a rep. The rep was very helpful he dropped the class for me since I was unable to and informed me that there was an issue they were experiencing with their online service. I was in the process of moving which happened unexpectedly due to my mom putting me and my 1 year old son out. I was able to find somewhere to move but the current class I was enrolled in started when I was going to be moving so I decided to push it back so I could get moved in, get a computer for the online classes as well as have the internet set up in my house which was required since this was an online program. During this time some of the financial aid money had disbursed which I did use some of it to get the internet started and purchased a computer and some other supplies I would need for classes. I then received an email 1-2 says later stating that they had went in and adjusted my financial aid unaware to me and no one even bothered to contact me about my intentions. When I called the school I spoke to rep that basically accused me of being a fraud and said that it was already done and the financial aid would now remain the same. I was so upset and felt lied to because I was told I would still have a week and I am not a crook at all. Due to the employee going in and taking it upon themselves to accuse me of being a fraud is why I was unable to start school because of the adjustments would not cover my classes. I have requested documentation since they have now turned the account over to the *** and I tried to contact them and and they suggested I get a lawyer to resolve the matter. I am doing everything in my power to avoid.

After months of having to fight to get this university to not bill me for courses that I did not take I have finally received a spiteful and greedy attempt at a resolution. Upon reading my "exception to policy" decision, I was disturbed to see that a justification for a partial denial was simply that one of the board members thought that my mental healthcare professional's testimony was no more than a "blanket statement". After considering what I know about my mental state at the time from my therapy and the advisement of my physicians, I concluded that this decision was not made by anyone qualified to make a judgment based on my health. I inquired about the credentials of the board members and my theory was validated. No healthcare professionals are on the judicial board that determines the financial fate of students with health issues. In fact, there are predominantly lawyers and individuals that care most about the profits of UMUC. I feel that this decision was based on money, as opposed to my health. I do not believe it is valid or had my best interest and actual conduct as a student-veteran in mind. Furthermore, this university failed to notify the collections company that they contracted of their billing change so I have to constantly explain the decision to SCCU. On top of everything else, as a result of this university's handling of this situation, the state of Maryland has attempted to charge me more than $9,000 for a reason that is not able to be articulated by the debt collector that they instructed me to call in a letter sent to my home.

Complaint: ***

I am rejecting this response because: UMUC's Manager of Resolution Management and Equity Programming has notified me that she and the university believe that I have exhausted all avenues of addressing this issue with the business. I will continue to voice my displeasure with how this university has handled my complaint so that their actions are documented and hopefully addressed. I will also continue to challenge their creditor and state's attempts at charging me inaccurately.

I have been receiving emails from UMUC saying that I must pay a 100 dollar application fee, I have not applied to UMUC nor do I intend to. I was told that if I do not pay the fee then they will send it to a credit collection agency.

After receiving the email saying I must pay I wrote back: "I have not submitted an application to UMUC and I have no intention of doing so or of attending, or enrolling in any course at UMUC. I have not paid any fee to UMUC and I will not pay any fee to UMUC. Please remove me from any list you have my name on."

They wrote back that I must contact the office to dispute the charge. I called the office but was told to email the office. I emailed the following: "I have been receiving emails that say that I have applied to umuc and must pay a fee. At first I thought it was a scam email so I didn't think much of it. Today I called and spoke to a UMUC representative. I am am emailing you today because I did not apply to UMUC or any other doctoral program in the world. I have no interest in attending UMUC or any other program in the world. I would like to stop receiving emails about a application I never filled out, have the application with my name on it withdrawn from UMUC, and have whatever fees I am being told that I have to pay for a application I didn't submit waived/ also withdrawn."

I was told I Must still pay the fee so I wrote the following to the office: "I have not filled out any application to any university let alone a doctorate program when I have not yet got masters. My background is in geology and I looked online, your university does not have a doctorate program in earth science so it does not make sense that I would apply to UMUC. I will be filing a complaint with the Revdex.com shortly as well as contacting my local state representative for actions I should take regarding umuc.
I have checked with close friends and family. No one as admitted to filling out an application on my behalf."

I was interested in studying MBA and I looked around at some colleges. UMUC was one of the candidates. I looked up their website and created an account. Once I created the account, I was admitted to *** University. So I didn't do anything with it. I didn't send them any transcript neither did I send any information.
When they contacted me through phone, I told them repeatedly: I AM NOT INTERESTED.

After a while they send me a bill that I need to pay $50 admission fee. What admission fee?
They have nothing that shows that I was planning to study there.

I called on 10/23/2018 again and requested to handle this issue. But without success.

It's not the money, I can afford the $50. Its the way they are doing business. Students are not
to rip off! You are there to help them and educate them and not take advantage of them.

I attended this university during my time as an active duty service member and as a cadet. I began having behavioral health issues and was attacked sometime before my online classes began. While battling the trauma of assault, its effects on my mental health, and nearly becoming homeless as a result of my circumstances I was unable to withdraw from courses. My correspondence with the university was spotty because they primarily attempted to contact me through email and responded inconsistently. After I lost my job because of how my health impacted my performance, I look at my credit report and see that I owe this university 5,400 dollars. After going through my emails I see that there was correspondence that relayed my predicament to representatives, but nothing was done in consideration of it. I was routinely assisted by my loved ones during this time and they handled some of my correspondence.

Fast forward: I'm applying for grad school and cannot obtain transcripts (Not even unofficial ones). I'm advised to submit a request for an exception to the university. I've since relocated and my previous behavioral healthcare specialist is in another state, so I submitted a packet that contained everything I had including my disenrollment. The school essentially told me I was lying and that my depression and anxiety disappeared during these semesters. They also reiterated that I was disenrolled and told me I was lying about the lack of consistency in their responses to me. I actually had to call several people to inquire about this decision because nobody from the judicial board contacted me within 48 hours after my submission. Right now I have to search for a health specialist that I haven't been seeing for nearly 1/2 a year because this university is insensitive and money hungry. I'm re-opening my investigation, but I felt that submitting this complaint was necessary for other veterans that are considering this university and are dealing with their health.

Complaint: ***

I am rejecting this response because:

The tone of it is not only lacking in objectivity and professionalism, it borders on condescending and spiteful. Mental health is a serious issue that many service members face and I did my best to contact this university before this issue got to this point. The contents of my request detailed my behavioral health issues and my assault. It is obvious to me that no one with the credentials to appropriately access medical exceptions of this nature is present in the office that makes decisions on them. I had to re-live one of the worst experiences of my life to appease UMUC's Judicial Affairs office and I have been met with nothing but dismissal and condescension. I have contacted my behavioral health specialist and notified her of my predicament. She has agreed to fax a letter to this business so that I don't have to view the contents of my records again, but this is unacceptable. In addressing the misleading statements on the website, I was met with the same dismissive and cold response. This university is supposed to be dedicated to providing service members with a way to attain an education regardless of their non-traditional lifestyles. Instead UMUC has consistently treated me as if I were a pariah because of my experiences and negatively impacted my credit and my ability to access my academic records. How is this university marketing itself to military service members and veterans when it cannot even understand common problems within the population? All of this while demanding money from me for a time period that I could barely make myself get out of bed, much less read email correspondence (something that is consistently referenced by their offices). My family and friends did their best to help me, but nothing can stop the greed and unrelenting insensitivity of this university's Judicial Affairs office. I am reopening my request today with my medical providers letter. Although I feel that this will be in vain, I will not let this university rob me of bettering myself. I still believe that the statements on the website are misleading and that this situation was avoidable.

I called today and talked to Shanita in financial aid who told me that they did not know that I went to ***. I have an email from 6/20/2018 from *** acknowledging an overlapping period before they applied a ***. I also have an email on 6/15/2018 from *** acknowledging that my loans were not yet canceled.

I have been trying to order a transcript from this college for over a year now. They state that I owe $30 I have tried to dispute the charge but have received no answer on that. I have tried to pay the amount but they say they can not take the payment and it has been transferred. I called the transfer place and they do not have an account on me. I have been on hold today alone for more than an hour. I really just want a transcript but they are holding it hostage over $30 from 15 years ago. It was not until I actually threatened to put in this complaint that they may be taking my payment. Ridiculous.

They did not address to me directly why I was forced to pay $30 in order get transcript or why I was placed on hold over and over in order to pay for numerous days in a row. Awful customer service and no way to dispute or challenge the erroneous charge.
