Predatory Towing Practices by Unlimited Recovery - 1313 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh NC
RUN from Unlimited Recovery... Predatory practices when towing on Hillsborough and Park St, Raleigh NC

On 12/13/2021 I was doing a food delivery to a college student at 109 Park Street, in Raleigh.
I parked in a small lot near 1313 Hillsborough Street and ran the food delivery in.
I made sure that where I parked had NO VISIBLE "do not park" signs.
There were none that I could see. None in front of my car or to the side and there were no “resident only” signs visible.
I kept my car on and flashers on just in case. I knew it would take a minute or less to drop off the food delivery.
I was in and out in about a minute and came back to my car, which had
a boot on it.
I was literally no longer than a minute doing the food delivery.
I was able to flag down an Unlimited Recovery tow truck driver that was patrolling a nearby lot.
I told him I had run in to do a food delivery drop off to people who lived at this place, and yet I was booted for it.
When he got to my car, I showed him my food deliveries inside, and yet he told me he would only release the boot if I paid $150.
He said there were signs that showed permit only parking, but none of them were visible.
He had to walk across the lot and show me one sign that said permit parking, and the sign wasn't visible.
I asked him if he hides his tow truck in the parking lot, just waiting for people he can tow, and he turned to me and smiled... knowing not to say anything.
I am going to ask others on social media if they've had similar experiences so we can perhaps form a lawsuit against Unlimited Recovery for predatory practices.
I would avoid parking anywhere near 1313 Hillsborough St or 109 Park Street, in Raleigh NC.
There's a good chance that Unlimited Recovery will be hiding their trucks in the parking lot, waiting for a free minute that they can boot your car.
They park in the lots, will boot you even if your car flashers are on, and they will not give you a warning.
You have no choice but to pay $150 to get the boot off.
Definitely predatory practices done by Unlimited Recovery of Raleigh, NC.

Company required payment to remove boot from vehicle even after the company who the spot is for approved my parking there.I parked in a spot behind businesses on Hillsborough Street across from NCSU that was towing enforced by Unlimited Recovery on 4/29/2016 at ~12:31pm. I was away from my car for approximately 10 minutes or less to pick something up from a business. When I arrived back to my car, it had been booted/immobilized by [redacted] a man who had been standing in the parking lot waiting to boot any cars that appeared to be in parking violations. When I arrived back to my car I was told that it would be $50 to have the boot removed from my vehicle. I appealed to [redacted] that I had only been away from my car for less than 10 minutes, and the penalty seemed unwarranted. After refusing this, I asked who I could call that could approve me parking in the spot. He told me I could call '[redacted]' (the owner of the spot) if I "could find the number." I was able to locate [redacted] and called their offices in Cary. They confirmed they had a satellite office on Hillsborough Street. The employee, I believe her name was [redacted] informed me that several of their employees had also been booted or towed if they did not show their permit on their vehicle. She said that she would speak to[redacted] to request he remove the boot and they approved my parking in the spot. He told her that only his boss could approve the boot removal. [redacted] requested his name, the name of his boss, and their phone number. [redacted] then called his boss requesting that the boot be removed and approving my parking in the space. [redacted] boss refused her request saying that the permit was necessary and that without one, no one could park there. Despite the fact that the company who owned the parking spot approved my parking there and requested the boot be removed, Unlimited Recovery refused to remove the boot and charged me $50 to have the boot removed. At the same time that I was attempting to resolve this issue, I witnessed 2 other drivers returning to their cars which had also been booted. Their spots were I believe the only spots in the entire parking lot that were not specifically marked 'No Parking'. The signage that was remotely close to their spots was unclear and given that the designations for all other spots were clearly marked for a specific company's use, it was very unclear that they were unable to park in the spots they had parked in. My opinion is that Unlimited Recovery is preying on young students in an area where they know parking can be difficult and that many people are just going quickly in and out of businesses. I find it disheartening that a business would charge customers and students who generally have little money a $50 fee no matter the length of time their car may be present in a given spot that it should not have been. I understand the need to limit parking where a student may attempt to park for a full day of class, but a $50 fine for a 10 minute 'run in, run out' errand seems a egregious. I especially find their practices predatory given that they refuse to comply with approval/requests for boot removal from the given business that the parking spot is allotted to.Desired SettlementMy only request from the company is to refund the $50 I was fined for parking in the '[redacted]' spot. '[redacted]' clearly tried to call Unlimited Recovery to resolve the situation, but their request was denied even though they are the ones who hold the spot.Business Response In this case, parking spot was designated ONLY and customer left the premises to go across the street. It is strict parking regulations on Hillsborough Street and especially in this location. As far as[redacted], they are not allowed to just let people park in their parking spots to conduct business at other places. We are a tow company that monitors parking lots. We will not be refunding due to our company did nothing wrong.Consumer Response My only response is to ask why[redacted] cannot allow whomever they want to use their spaces for whatever they want to use them for. I do not understand why a business that runs the space does not have the ability to say who can park there and when.Final Business Response Unlimited Recovery LLC was advised to tow anyone that did not have a permit that was parked in the [redacted] designated spots. This gentleman did not have a permit and was therefor was booted for being illegally parked. We did not hear anything from the person that set up the contract about releasing the vehicle for this person. For this reason, we will not be refunding this person.

I was parked in a lot that did not explicitly state who was able to use the lot. I was booted and charged $50 and treated very rudely by the company.Date: 2/7/2014I was parked in a lot on [redacted] Street in Raleigh off of [redacted] Street and proceeded to eat at the restaurant [redacted] When I returned from eating about 30 minutes after parking, there was a boot on my car. I called the number and a company employee showed up. She stated that if I did not pay $50 to have the boot removed then I would be towed immediately from the premises. I asked her where the sign that stated who could park in the lot was and she did not reply. The only sign around was one that read "Unauthorized vehicles will be towed at owners expense." She stated that one must be a customer to park in the lot and I was indeed a customer of the restaurant. She was very rude to me and did not explain to me why I was booted. On my ticket she gave me once I paid, it read that she was called by [redacted] to boot a grey BMW. My vehicle is a Lexus, and had she not walked off very rapidly after receiving my money I would have asked her. I called the company and they told me that she probably just gave me the wrong ticket, though there were no other booted cars in the lot. I then called [redacted] and asked the manager if they had requested the towing of any cars and why the lot was not properly labeled to show which business patrons explicitly could park there. The manager informed me that he did not call anyone about booting vehicles and that he did not care who parked there as long as they were eating at some of the nearby restaurants. He also informed me that the towing company was responsible for choosing the vehicles based on who they saw parking. I then called the company back and they said blatantly "Well the manager is lying" and then immediately hung up the phone. I would like to receive a refund from the Unlimited Recovery company. Also, if you visit their website, there are many reviews that from citizens that have had their cars towed while parked legally. This company was extremely rude and I feel like they singled my car out because I am a young adult and they felt like they could take advantage of me. Thank you for your help. Desired SettlementI am seeking for the company to refund my $50 payment that I gave to the employee in the parking lot. I feel as though I should not have been booted because there are no signs that say who can park in the lot.

Unlimited Recovery LLC does not follow government statute's towing. This company needs to be inspected and under surveillance for predatory towing. On 10/05/2015 I was working at the bar [redacted] St, Raleigh, NC XXXXX. I parked my mother's car behind [redacted] and around 11:00pm the towing company Unlimited Recovery had removed the car from the spot and taken it to their storage facility at, 3201 Durham Dr, Raleigh, NC 27603. I called the night of the incident and spoke to two employees and asked both of them if I could have a manager from [redacted] call and explain that I was in fact working at the location that night and that it was ok to park in the [redacted] parking lot. I was told that all disputes would have to be settled with a manager and that I would have to wait until the following Monday 10/07/2015. The following Monday 10/07/2015 around 11:00am I arrived at Unlimited Towing LLC's office where I was told that there was nothing that they could do and that because I had waited an extra day to retrieve my mother's car an additional storage fee was going to be charged. After some debate I paid the $125 Unlimited Towing LLC asked for and removed my mothers car from their lot. I have a number of grievances with this event.1. Under G.S 20-219.2 subsection (a2) - Any person who tows or stores a vehicle subject to this section shall inform the owner in writing at the time of retrieval of the vehicle that the owner has the right to pay the amount of the lien asserted, request immediate possession, and contest the lien for towing charges pursuant to the provisions of G.S. 44A-4.By definition of owner as defined by NC state law is as stated in G.S 20-4.01.(26) Owner. - A person holding the legal title to a vehicle, or in the event a vehicle is the subject of a chattel mortgage or an agreement for the conditional sale or lease thereof or other like agreement, with the right of purchase upon performance of the conditions stated in the agreement, and with the immediate right of possession vested in the mortgagor, conditional vendee or lessee, said mortgagor, conditional vendee or lessee shall be deemed the owner for the purpose of this Chapter. For the purposes of this Chapter, the lessee of a vehicle owned by the government of the United States shall be considered the owner of said vehicle.I am not the owner of the vehicle in question and not only has it been more than 10 days since the incident and the owner of the vehicle in question was never informed in writing that the owner has the right to pay the amount of the lien asserted, request immediate possession, and contest the lien for towing charges pursuant to the provisions of G.S. 44A-4.Unlimited Recovery LLC also released vehicular property to an individual who did not own the vehicle. So in accordance with G.S XX-XXX.2 (b) Any person violating any of the provisions of this section shall be guilty of an infraction and upon conviction shall be only penalized not less than one hundred fifty dollars ($150.00) in the discretion of the court.Unlimited Recovery LLC should at the very least be charged a $150 fee.Desired SettlementI would like my $125 fee refunded to me.

My vehicle was wrongfully towed on private property. I have a parking permit. Vehicles that do not have permits are suppose to be towed only. They waited until 2 a.m. to take vehicle. I know how to park. I have never park illegally. I have seen this company sneaking around waiting to tow vehicles on this private property. They have towed vehicles that belong to residents in this complex. All residents have papers, stating that if cars are not with permit stickers will be towed. Desired SettlementRefund for towing a permitted vehicle on private property.

Very unprofessional appearing representative not in a tow truck but in a regular sedan like car. Placed a boot within seconds of my parking in an unauthorized area that has until recently been available for parking. Argued that the area has been unauthorized for parking for years which isn't true and said there was sufficient notice, which there isn't. Because of his appearance and taking written information about my credit card for payment, I notified Revdex.com and put my credit card company on notice. I also cancelled my credit card and asked for a re-issue due to the level of distrust I had for this individual and his also sloppy appearing friend who were laughing about the situation. I notified my neighborhood association to beware of these two individuals./////Desired SettlementI want a refund of the money I paid and additional, clear signs to indicate no parking in the spots deemed unauthorized parking. I would also like the company to know they do not create an environment of trust in hiring the type of individual they hired to do this job and that their customer relations could be improved by being less greedy about collecting fees immediately for unsuspecting individuals like myself who have routinely parked in that area for years. Very poor community relations on their part./////

A customer service representative named [redacted] from Unlimited Recovery was rude, insulting and uncivil in her phone communication with me. This company is the most unprofessional, lazy, and irresponsible company I have ever had the displeasure of communicating with. On 5/21/2014 I parked in a parking lot reserved for specific business [redacted] and I [redacted] a boot was put on my car because I did not eat in those businesses. I ate across a one way road at [redacted] I called the representative [redacted] to first ask why the boot was on my car, she said nothing and once I prompted her to send someone out did she make a sound. I called back to complain about the $50.00 charge for taking up an hour of time in the parking lot while I was eating at a banned restaurant across the one lane road. She was extremely rude and arrogant. She did not say the company's name when answering the phone, so I had to ask for the name of the company. I asked for the name of the manager and she only gave me her first name ([redacted]). When I asked for the managers last name she said "I am not giving out that information", I asked her why not and she said "Because you don't deserve that information". I asked for her name in which she only gave me her first [redacted] and then told her to have a great day. This is unacceptable behavior from a company and a customer service representative. I would like a refund for being treated thus and demand either a different company take over that parking lot or to employ new service representatives. Desired SettlementI would like a refund for the way I was treated, but if a $50.00 refund is too much, I would like new employees to be hire to replace the disgraceful ones currently employed.

DamagesThe company towed my car in the middle of the night which I am a residence of. I missed my first two classes which I pay out of pocket for college. It took me two hours to locate where my car was and the reason for being towed was "no pass", however I am two parking passes display n my car. It's 20 degrees at night who walks around looking for cars to tow.and the picture they took wasn't clear. The worst part is my car is now damage....I have a long white scratch on my car that wasn't on it before. This company has overall bad service and should be shut down. I should pick up my car the way they picked it up.Desired SettlementI would like an apology from the car and the damages paid forBusiness Response What is the year, make, model of the vehicle so we can further investigate this situation. Consumer Response 2006 Saab 9-3Final Business Response The parking lot where this lady was parked requires a parking permit to park in the parking lot, otherwise you need to be in a visitor spot. This lady did have two parking passes, however neither of them were for that parking lot. We do have pictures showing this. We are also not accepting responsibility for the long white scratch. We explained this to the lady when she picked up her vehicle. For these reasons we are not refunding money or paying for any damages. The lady was illegally parked and that is why we towed her vehicle.

Unrealistic, rude, horrible business mannerisms, called professionally to resolve an issue and they were 100% not customer focused nor professional. An apartment complex which has very few visitor parking spots was completely full when visiting. I sat there and waited to park and waited to see if someone left from a spot. As it got later, I was not going to sleep in my car, so I picked the first spot right next to the visitor's parking spot (in the best attempt to be compliant with the complexes rules)...mind you this was still about 1.5 blocks away from the apartment. My car was towed and when I arrived to pick it up the next morning, quite frustrated, the gentlemen working said I could call Monday to simply explain the situation to the manager. The woman who answered the phone on Monday was rude and when she stated "you will not be getting a refund" and "we ain't gonna provide it" I said, okay well I am not trying to be unrealistic, I wanted to be compliant and I believe I should be able to talk with someone about this that could understand. She put me on hold and I started to speak to another woman. She was even more rude, she told me I was not professional, I said I am trying to resolve an unrealistic issue, when trying to be compliant. I said if this is not a department as to which can provide me the refund I would like the name of the property management company then. She started to get rude and irritated and became extremely unprofessional. I simply stated "I will be contacting the better business Revdex.com and good luck."Desired SettlementSimply the refund for doing all that I could to be compliant. I feel sleeping in my car overnight so it were to not get towed was an unrealistic expectation when visiting a complex. I did not attempt to break the rules (if I were, I would have parked right next to the building I needed to be at, not the parking lot 1.5 blocks away). Every time I visit, I always park in the visitor's spot, it is not my fault that the complex did not have enough spaces. All I am asking is for a realistic understanding of the situation that was at hand.Business Response In this situation I spoke with Customer this morning and was completely different than stated. She was at a permit parking only apartment complex and their are some visitor spots. I advised her that we had no control over how many visitor spots they have available. Unfortunately her vehicle was towed because she was parked in a Permit Only parking spot. She was not satisfied with Th answer I had given her and was in no way rude to her. I simply stated that there was nothing I could do and was unable to give a refund because our company did nothing wrong

The customer service is extremely rude. The business claim the charge is $125 over the phone. It is $175 when you get there.","neg-1

My college son's vehicle was towed from his own apartment building because his hanging permit had fell from the mirror to the floor of the car. I called the company to see if we could come to an agreement on reducing this 150.00 charge since he wasn't parked illegally. I explained what happened and asked the dispatcher what their procedure was as far as looking in the vehicle before towing. He stated they weren't allowed to look in the windows. The dispatcher said I would have to talk to the manager. Two days later the manager never returned my call. I called the manager and talked with the owner who said it was procedure to look in the vehicles before towing. I explained the permit was visible if they looked inside the window. From this point the owner became rude and told me my son should take responsibility and hung up on me. The owner of this towing company has no professionalism, who doesn't have a set of procedures or if he does he doesn't train his staff. Just a cheap business trying to make a quick buck off of college students.","neg-3

Very low rent! Sits in wait to watch someone park illegal and then boots cars and then tells the person they did and they want $50 to unboot or tow. Prays on college students. After debit card was provided the person split the card so it could not be used again. From what we have been told this happens often.","neg-4

Towed resident's vehicle from an apartment complex and damaged the vehicle in the process of towing the vehicle. Residents are allowed one parking space so vehicle shouldn't have been towed.Resident contacted the towing company to let them know it was a residents vehicle and the company hung up in middle of the call.Contacted the company to notify them immediately of the damages and they refused to identify themselves, it also took several request for the mailing address before they would disclose the information. They wouldn't take the complaint over the phone and said there was not manager present so I would have to call back.In the process of trying to resolve the matter with the company. But the customer services has not been acceptable.Desired SettlementDamages repaired. More info received from the consumer 2014-06-05The towing company has refunded to the apartment resident the cost of the tow. As the apartment complex had requested that the towing company not tow on Sunday because Monday was a holiday.

They are illegally detaining my car. I paid for the car and it is parked behind 10 other cars and they tell me I have to wait until a driver comes Illegally settinge and my car. There are 10 cars stored in front of my car. After I paid to get my car out of their yard. I have to wait hours for a driver to come tow all the cars they put behinds car. Desired SettlementRefund if the 150 dollar costBusiness Response On said day that consumer came into to get car, vehicle had already been here for 2 days. We are a VERY busy towing company that is constantly pulling illegally parked cars into our lot. Consumer came to pay vehicle and did have to wait almost an hour. We were very apologetic to consumer for this as well as he walked around talking to some of the employees with no aggression. We he left our lot there was no indication that this had burdened him to this degree. Our company will not be refunding customer because he was illegally parked and left his vehicle here for 2 days.

Unjustified towing of vehicle On the night of 8 Sep 16, I parked my car across from building [redacted] Raleigh, NC. I am required to park across from the building, because I do not have a parking sticker. Sometime during the night my vehicle, red Honda Civic, was towed. Before leaving with my vehicle, it was first moved to a spot in front of building [redacted] Dr, Raleigh, NC. This is where Unlimited Towing took pictures of my vehicle to prove it was in the incorrect spot and therefore warrant the towing of my vehicle.Desired SettlementI would like a refund of the $100 that was required to pickup my vehicle.Business Response This lady was towed for being illegally parked. We took the picture where the vehicle was parked to prove that it was illegally parked and towed the vehicle. We do not move this ladies vehicle before towing. And therefor we will not be issuing a refund.

I am filing this complaint based on Unlimited Recovery violation & failing to adhere to Illegal Parking Management Policy, which states on their website:
Unlimited Recovery demonstrates fair and equitable handling of parking violators, without the price gouging or unethical treatment. We specialize in damage-free service and our drivers are courteous, trained and uniformed for everyone's safety.
My car was abandoned in an unsupervised parking lot instead of being driven back the facility until I picked it up. Also, they wanted to first charge me with full price - $175.00 for towing, when the driver decides to drop my car 5 mins away from where he retrieved it. It would be considered unethical treatment and the driver definitely was not courteous and lack training. Lastly, it was safe for everyone because my car could have been broken into, damage or stole.
On August 3th around 12:00my car got towed from a [redacted] Apartment in Raleigh. I was not aware the apt complex has a towing policy after 11pm, due to the lack of visible signs to indicate this policy. While dropping a friend off, I return minutes later and noticed my car had been moved. After much research I finally found out that Unlimited Recovery towing service had my car. I called the company around 12:10am and spoke to a female worker regarding my vehicle. She stated they had my car in custody and I would need to pay $175.00 to retrieve my car. After finding a ride it took about 30 minutes to get to their establishment. It was 1:45am, and they did not have my car in custody. I am irritated because my car should have been there, since they picked it up around 12:08. So the female worker had to call the driver to find out the location of my car. He had abandoned my car at Food Lion parking 5 minutes from the [redacted] Apt Complex unsupervised and suggested that I pay the full price of $175.00 for towing. The female worker ended up charging me $75.00 because she felt it was unfair how I was treated and entire time of this ordeal. After paying this absurd fee, I had to get a ride back over to the Food Lion off Creedmoor and Millbrook Rd., which took another 30 minutes. I did not get my car until 2:30pm. As a professional & business man this situation could have been handled better, and I believe I should be refunded my $75.00 for the lack of professionalism and failure to uphold their policy and procedure regarding safety. Secondly, I had called Unlimited Recovery on Aug 3th, Aug 4th, and Aug 8th and no one from upper management has even called me back to apologize or at least try to ratified the situation. Lastly, as of August 8th, the driver had not received any disciplinary action, per the manager, however she stated she would talk to upper management about writing up the driver. My great concerns in how many other people in past, present or future will experience that type of treatment. Something definitely needs to be done to prevent other citizens as myself will not have to go this craziness.
Sincerely,
[redacted]","neg-2
