On 04/24/18, *** *** Trucking contacted us about a low power issue with his truck. The driver showed up about minutes later. We got vehicle in the shop immediately and began diagnostic procedures which include questioning driver on issue. Driver stated that he thought a
CAC boot may have blow. We then did a thorough inspection of entire air intake system. No Damage found with air system. The next step in process is to connect to vehicle with our laptop equipped with Cummins InSite software to check for active/inactive faults. At this time the driver informed me that the emission system (DPF,DEF) has been removed and the ECM programming has been modified from the factory specifications. Having ECM modifications hinders our ability to accurately and efficiently diagnose faults. Once hooked up to vehicles ECM, we found multiple faults logged in ECM. The fault that was relevant to customers complaint was (VGT Actuator Driver Circuit Error - Root Cause Unknown). According to the ECM internal clock, this fault was logged around same time the driver claimed to have noticed low power issue. Informed the driver of the next steps to diagnose this fault. The driver then handed me his phone with his boss on the other end. I explained very thoroughly what the following steps would entail (draining anti-freeze and removing VGT actuator from turbo to inspect for damage), he agreed with no issue. We then removed VGT actuator and inspected, found no physical damage to actuator and the turbo sector gear and nozzle were within Cummins specifications. Attempted to calibrate VGT actuator, calibration failed twice, passed on third time. Reassembled turbo and continued diagnostic procedures which include checking the EGR circuit for correct functionality. Removed exhaust tube (***) to inspect EGR valve. At this time, driver informed me that the owner requested we reassemble unit and he will fix it himself. While reassembling unit, I found a damaged exhaust gas pressure sensor. We did not have new sensor in stock, we did have used sensor on a used motor in shop. Driver agreed to installing sensor. Installed sensor and finished reassembly process including damaged exhaust pipe (***) which was in one piece when we installed it. If this alleged damaged pipe was the root cause of the low power, it would have been addressed first, since there would have been an excessive amount of exhaust leaking from that area which is very audible. Since the owner of the vehicle requested we reassemble unit before the diagnosis was complete, there was no test drive of unit to verify repairs. On 04/25/18, *** *** called to complain that we did not repair his unit correctly and that he was able to diagnose the problem within minutes. I explained to him again what we did to his vehicle while it was in our shop and why I thought what he was saying about the exhaust pipe was incorrect and that he did not allow us to complete the job. He then stated that he will report us to the Revdex.com. John HefeleUnlimited Truck & Trailer Repair Owner636-456-

I am rejecting this response because:
The only correct part of Mr***'s statement is that his shop got my
truck in immediately.? When my driver, ***, got to the shop, the
mechanic, ***, told him it didn't sound right, to pull the truck into
the garage.? The diagnostic computer was hooked up immediately (so I
would love for someone to explain to me how a "thorough inspection of
entire air intake system" could be performed without opening the hood).?
After the diagnostic check, the mechanic opened the hood and drained
the water and removed the actuator without my prior authorization.? THE
MECHANIC NEVER HEARD THE ENGINE RUN WITH THE HOOD OPEN ON THE TRUCK.?
*** phoned me and told me *** had drained the water and removed the
actuator and that the actuator had failed twice.? I spoke with *** on
***'s phone and *** said he was going to reset his computer and he
would let me know if the actuator passed.? *** never phoned back.?
*** phoned me and told me that once the computer was reset, the
actuator "miraculously passed", which implied ***'s computer was at
fault not my actuator.? The next update I received was from a frustrated
***.? He stated that *** had the exhaust pipe off and it was in two
pieces in his hands.? *** had asked ***, "What's that?"? *** replied
sarcastically, "A piece of pipe."? *** witnessed *** trying to put
the two pieces of pipe back together.? *** said he responded to ***,
"I understand that, but why is it in your hands and not on my truck?"?
*** said he had to remove it to test the EGR Valve.? As *** was
putting the pipe back together, he found a loose Exhaust Gas Sensor.? On
my bill it was stated that the sensor was found in ***'s"tool box" but
in MR***'s response it stated it was taken from a "used motor in
shop".? Ultimately, the damaged pipe was the cause of all the truck's
problems.? The two pieces of pipe that had been pushed back together had
to be welded and the pipe was then correctly reinstalled (at which time
the truck was taken for a test drive and proved to be back in good
working condition).? I would like it known that neither I, nor ***,
appreciate or deserve to be called liars.? I also do not appreciate
being sworn at when I had only phoned to discuss the matter in a
gentleman-like manner.? ?
Sincerely,
*** ***
