I signed a contract with company for my 2 children to attend class at the cost of $495.00 per month.Starting in January 2020. I had all intentions of continuing the contract. Two into the contract, I work responsibility changed ( I am a single mother - this was a good opportunity) I notified the school and also told the school we will be moving to a new home which will further away and will make it harder to attend class. I requested a cancellation at this time and found out there was no such thing.Throughout our engagement, we only attended classes 4 times. To star the contract, I had already paid a $1000 deposit. I inquired which options there were, I was asked to complete a hold form for each child.My ability to do that took 2 weeks-siting a website issue, and after the February 2020 payment was processed. I completed forms and was told me account was on hold. I assumed that the payments will stop, not knowing that in the fine print of the hold form it says that payment will continue to be processed. The payment was processed for March 2020 despite not attending the school since mid January when the 1st request for cancellation was made. This cannot be good business ethics. I am hoping you can help me. The contract runs until the end f the year and I simply cannot understand why this business will charge my family that monthly bill for services I will not be using. I cannot afford a damage to my credit since I am purchasing a home. Thank you

We are disappointed to hear about Ms. experience with our program. We've been teaching martial arts since 1973 and pride ourselves in the transparency and trust within our student relationships.

Ms. kids enrolled in a 12-month program on November 21st, 2019. During the enrollment conference, Ms. mentioned she would be getting a new position at her company, and that it wouldn't interfere with her kids class attendance. During that time, Ms. received and signed a copy of our Hold Request Guidelines when she enrolled. Both documents are attached.

After the children joined the program, Ms. herself enrolled in the program at no cost to her. Attached is a copy of the Membership Agreement which lists the cancellation policy along with the Hold Request Guidelines which she signed that state the following:

Please note that a hold request does not stop or alter the terms of the tuition payment schedule. Once approved, the time missed will be added to the end of the current membership agreement.

In mid-January, Ms. had some concerns about the program. We scheduled three separate meetings with her to address her concerns. All three meetings were missed or canceled by Ms.. She then put in a hold request, which was submitted manually. Attached is a copy of each hold request form which contains the following acknowledgment that she agreed to and signed on three separate occasions:

I would like to "freeze" (put on hold) my/my child's U.S. Kuo Shu Academy training program. I understand that I will not lose any training time during the time frame on hold and acknowledge by requesting the hold that I will also be responsible for any payments that may be due (as scheduled on my program membership agreement) during the hold request. If any payment(s) become delinquent, all "frozen" time is then void. I accept these terms and conditions that will allow me to take advantage of the hold request.

In total, Ms. signed eight separate documents, acknowledging our procedures for handling cancellations, hold requests, etc. We have also reached out numerous times to schedule the three meetings to address her concerns. Unfortunately, Ms. either missed or canceled those meetings.

Please let me know what this response means as I am not clear.
Does this mean the business will continue to charge me each month for services I am not using? Each time I missed a meeting due to new work schedule, I notified the business. It is untrue that I told the business about new responsibilities before I enrolled. My children and I attended classes 5 times at the most and have now paid total of $3,000 for me failing to read the fine print on their 8 documents all while they move you to a small room and sell you on the contract with "no our" clause. Does that amount satisfy the business, or will they continue to charge me $500 a month? If so, I iterate that this is poor business ethics in opinion, and will to continue this complaint for the next unsuspecting consumer. I am willing to talk to the media about this on the grounds of principle and ethics.None of the other families could even discuss the rate of the classes when I asked prior to enrolling, and that should have been my warning sign. The lack of transparency and the slimy way they enroll their members, and barrage of reminder texts warrants a warning to all potential customers. In fact, I think Baltimore County schools should be alerted about this complaint as the business solicits, as they did myself at school open houses in the fall. This is a true, expensive lesson for me. . After I filed this complaint, Mr Weeber tried to reach me to "see if we can work something out " ( another under handed - lack of transparency move- I also have voice messages) I sent the attached email stating that I no longer trusted a business that would treat their customers in this manner and declined to meet with him. I would like to pursue mediation if this business does not allow and "out" of this contract. thank you . Please see email below

US Kuo Shu Academy would again like to express regret that Ms. has found disappointment with our program, and we refer her to our original response for clarification. We service dozens of satisfied students in our main locations and hundreds of students worldwide. We offer a program that has been recognized routinely by state senators, the governor, foreign diplomats, and even the President of the United States.

We do our best to foster a family-friendly and learning-based atmosphere; we promote the kind of environment in which our students would rather talk about techniques than costs and pricing. Even still, different members are enrolled in different programs so pricing may differ based on a variety of factors.

Ms. had an opportunity to sample our program, free of charge to see if it was a good fit for her and her children. Ms. decided to then sign a contract, only after the pricing plan was disclosed to her. There are no hidden fees, no hidden costs, and there was absolutely no pressure for Ms. to join our program; she did so of her own volition. The contracts are clear and abide by all state contracting regulations and laws. We do understand that Ms. had difficulty abiding by our school schedules. As she stated, we have set several meetings as well as made phone calls to try and rectify the issues. It is not clear why she considers our attempts to meet with her "slimy," but we are more than willing to engage in mediation to come to a reasonable resolution.
