The customer in question dropped his mower off on March 21, to receive a basic yearly service which entails Checking all belts and pulleys, Checking oil and oil filter, Checking air filter and pre-filter, Checking fuel filter, Checking spark plugs,
Checking battery, Checking air in tires, Sharpening blades, Lubing, Leveling deck if needed, Scraping out debris from under deck, and Test runningThe labor itself runs $not including replacement partsWe replaced one spark plug, one pre-filter(air), one air filter, one fuel filter, and quarts of oil for a total of $96.48. After it was serviced, we attempted to start the mower and discovered that the CCA (cold cranking amps) of the battery was inadequate to create enough voltage to start the unitWe put the battery on a tester and found it held only CCAAfter charging, the battery went to CCA then fell back down to CCAThe battery was manufactured in with the original CCA of 160. Rarely does a battery with such low amperage last even three yearsWe called the customer to explain the situation and to recommend replacing the battery as the current one could lead to further damage to such other components as the starterThe customer argued that the current battery was fine and refused to consider replacementWe tried to explain that he could not be guaranteed the mower would start in a consistent mannerOn April 3rd, he came to the shop to pick up the unitOur technician retrieved the unit, which did happen to start, drove it onto the customers trailer, turned it off, and re-started itThe customer paid for services rendered and drove it homeHe made no attempt to contact us after taking the unit homeI cannot feel that we are at fault after fully informing him of the situationOn a personal note, we have been in the retail business since and in the mower repair business since 2000, plus as the owner and a technician, I consistently attend update seminars to get re-certified in all leading manufacturers. In addition, we have enjoyed serving the general public as well as the military all these years, so, for this person to imply that we do substandard work, cause damage to prove ourselves right, or rip someone off (military or otherwise) borders on slander. --

I missed the previous email, I was coming back from leave and going immediately into a field training exercise. I do not accept the business's rebuttal. The bottom line is that I dropped off a mower that started with no problems after a cold winter and got back a mower that only starts when jumped.
