Hello [redacted], I am very surprised by this complaint. However I do understand you frustrations. The delays have been difficult for us too. We spoke in detail this past Thursday June 4th 2015 regarding the negative feedback you were planning on posting.  When we ended the...

conversation you agreed to remove the feedback and I agreed to a new revised competition time of end of July. I explained that is reasonable and we will exceed your expectations with the finished product. We were in agreement.  You also agreed to contact the Revdex.com and have the negative feedback removed. At least until we have completed the project. And that quality work would be the way in which we make up for the delays…As we discussed last Thursday, we are down to a smaller staff than when we first met. That work is taking longer than planned, however, the work is good quality. And rushing to finish too fast will end in restoration problems.  Regarding a refunding of money for the Land Cruiser and the restoration work....First, as you know, there are no refunds of old car buy backs.  Our company policy is both clearly posted in your purchase agreement (which I can forward), your "as-is" bill of sale and is clearly [redacted]ed on every page of our website. You may want to reread the Terms & Conditions…  Here is a link:  [redacted] However, in your case you personally visited us and inspected the vehicle in question. And it met with your approval in every way!  You took ownership and we started the restoration work.   The only aspect to the transaction that is left is the restoration work outlined in the agreement, which we are performing. Like I have said before we are short staffed and must take care to not rush this restoration work.  We are well on our way to completing the restoration work.  You and I just discussed last Thursday and a July completion is the revised deadline.  In addition, I have performed several expensive upgrades, at no additional cost to you. These expensive upgrades are a token gift to you to help offset the delays; such as a full exterior repaint and more at no charge.Again, we are very sorry for the delays.  And I hope you will rethink your complaint and will allow us to finish the restoration work we are in the middle of, as we discussed. When a client wants out of a restoration project we offer the option of finding the truck an new home and cashing that customer out.  I would be happy to explore this option with you as well.Best regards,   [redacted] @ Vintage

Bought a 1974 FJ40 from Vintage OffRoad.com this spring. My interactions during the entire experience were very professional and positive. I love my new Land Crusier and have recommended Vintage OffRoad to my friends who are in the market for a new FJ.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and find that this resolution would be satisfactory to me.  I will wait until for the business to perform this action and, if it does, will consider this complaint resolved.

Regards,

Greg not only provided me with a beautiful FJ 45, he made a dream come true. Greg loves Land cruisers and it shows in his work and they way he treated me as a customer. I am very grateful and highly recommend Vintage Off Road.

Review: I purchased a 1985 FJ 60 Toyota Land Cruiser with V8 modified engine, in August 2012 by Vintage Offroad.

I contacted Vintage Offroad after seeing their ads on Outside Magazine, promoting vintage Toyota Land Cruisers restored and "guaranteed".

Since the beginning, I interacted solely with the owner of Vintage Offroad, Mr. [redacted].

After a few discussion on the right vehicle for me, Mr [redacted] eventually offered to sell me the V8 modified 1985 FJ60 Toyota Land Cruiser for USD 24000. The modifications listed for the vehicle were: V8 Ford Bronco conversion and EMU Old Man 3'' suspensions kit.

For this price, which is very much above the market price for a vehicle of this age, Mr [redacted] guaranteed in multiple occasion, both verbally over the phone and in written agreement via email, that the car would be in "absolutely top conditions" "fully inspected" and "guaranteed".

Upon delivery of the vehicle, it appeared that the Toyota was not at all in top conditions, but it also had major mechanical problems due to poor or no maintenance of key mechanical parts, making it no drivable.

After having the vehicle inspected by [redacted], at 6[redacted] (Tel. [redacted]), I contacted Mr. [redacted] in multiple occasions explaining these issues. In short, the vehicle sold to me by Vintage Offroad as a "Top truck" for 24000 USD needed:

1) Entire new cooling system given the old and broken radiator and the worn out piping (performed for 600 USD in parts and labor, paid by Vintage Offroad)

2) New clutch (performed for 1000 USD in parts and labor)

3) New transmission (performed for 1000 USD in parts and labor)

4) New suspension system (not performed, estimated at 2000 USD in parts and labor)

5) Wheel alignment (performed for 100 USD)

6) Air-conditioning (not performed, estimated at 600 USD in parts and labor)

7) New transformer (performed, 100 USD)

8) New battery (performed, 100 USD)

9) New heating sensor (the car is a Toyota but the engine is a Ford, hence the heating sensor misreads)

In addition to the above list, the vehicle needs body work as it has multiple advanced rust spots, interiors are tore and cracked and the promised undercoating of paint to protect it from rust was never performed by Vintage Offroad.

Mr [redacted] has kept in touch with me all along, apologizing in multiple occasion both verbally and in writing, and accepting the charges for the new radiator and the labor needed (see point 1 above). He has acknowledged the wrongdoing of Vintage Offroad and offered additional refund for the sum of 1100 USD. This sum was promptly returned to him as deemed insufficient for the financial damage caused by the vehicle.Desired Settlement: The Toyota was sold for the very much above market price of 24000 USD, under the written guarantee that for this price the vehicle would be in "top conditions".

The vehicle has undergone through 3000 USD or mechanical work and has still to go through 3000 more USD of major mechanical work to simply be functioning and drivable.

In addition, it would still have to go through body work to take care of the advanced rust spots and the multiple large dents and bumps it exhibits.

Given the above, the desired outcome is for Vintage Offroad to buy the Toyota back for full refund.

Response:

We shipped your truck to you last fall. It is a 27 year old highly customized Land Cruiser that you bought sight unseen in August of 2012. Our customers often visit us prior to shipment. Upon delivery you found some issues that you wanted corrected. We immediately located a mobile mechanic that agreed to fix these issues right at your home, with at no cost to you. That work last fall cost Vintage Offroad over $2,000 dollars. But it was worth every penny to show we were there to support you. At the time we took care of your issues, we both parted friends. Last Fall was the last time I heard from you until you started emailing me last month. You wanted us to pay for additional costs and mechanical work. A few months ago you started emailing me about additional costs and mechanical work. We offer a limited warranty for delivery to protect against any issues out of the box. We supported you with that warranty. Asking us to pay additional costs when so much time has passed is not reasonable when you consider that you purchased a 27 year old used vehicle. Seven though we have no obligation after so much time, we value the relationship and would like to support you and offered you $1,100 deposited into your account. Unfortunately, you refused this good faith offer and demanded more money from us. We are confused by your demand for more money after so much time. In addition, we are unable to contact you directly by phone to discuss this further. I understand you are currently out of the country. If you would like to contact me, I would be happy to explore how to move forward. Best regards, [redacted]

Response:

Thank you for your view on the issue. From my standpoint, this is not about a limited warranty issue. I believe that Vintage Offroad Inc has produced a false representation of the conditions of the vehicle, deliberately deceived the customer on its true conditions (as described by you via phone calls and emails), and gross negligence. More than that, it is about the trust that I have placed as a customer in your business, paying a high price and that has not been met by what you have delivered. 1) Deception and false representation of the vehicle conditions on behalf of Vintage Offroad Inc:During the sale process, you went in great length through our many exchanges by phone and via email in describing the truck as in “top” shape and even “perfect”, building my confidence in the purchase of a good product and a good service. I certainly wouldn’t have spent the unreasonably high price of 23,900 USD for a 27 years old vehicle have I known the true status of the car. And given that the truck was sold at more thantwice its market value (please see as reference even the most customized comparable trucks of the same years on ebay [redacted]I expected what you promised: that the car to be thoroughly checked and brought back in optimal conditions. As expressed in multiple occasions, I did appreciate the initial effort to make it up to me, back when the car was delivered. However, these efforts have been very inconsistent and in anyway not nearly satisfactory considering that you sold me the vehicle in very poor conditions for 23.900 USD. As you surely remember, following the initial work you cited (on overheating and steering issues) since the delivery of the vehicle, last fall, I kept contacting you through these days. It was you and your shop that stopped responding to my emails and phone calls after the initial engagement. I kept complaining on the fact that the car was still overheating (to these days) after the intervention, on the multiple advanced rust spots, lacking air-conditioning, and poor general conditions of the car was left unanswered by your shop through these days. As a matter of fact you still have not responded to many of my emails, claiming serious family issues, to these days. Barely 1000 miles later (the very limited mileage is due to the very reason that it the car was not drivable), I had to go through additional major mechanical work with transmission, clutch, suspensions and airco system, (to not include the already mentioned rust and poor general conditions), hence my most recent emails, phone calls and finally mediation through Revdex.com.2) Gross Negligence on behalf of Vintage Offroad Inc.The issues I cite here above in point 1) and in my previous email to Revdex.com are all preexisting the sale of the vehicle and could have easily been diagnosed by your shop. Vintage Offroad Inc purchased the vehicle from its previous owner in Montana. The vehicle already had the existing customization of the V8 Ford engine and the 3 inch Old Man EMU suspensions. Your shop did not add any of these. Your shop did not do anything to the truck beside swapping rear view mirrors and removing the roof rack. Instead Vintage Offroad inc has simply shipped me the vehicle without adding any value to it. The car wasn’t properly checked, if at all, as you admitted and apologized to me several times, claiming a reliability issue affecting your employees. This is still gross negligence on your side.As a result, the car for which I paid a premium price was delivered to me not even in drivable conditions, and with a long list of major work to still be done to it to make it safe and usable. I have paid an excessive price for a vehicle that was in terrible conditions, as I can prove by receipts of the mechanics at [redacted] in Brooklyn, NY.The “reason d etre” of Vintage Offroad Inc is to find vintage vehicles and restore them fully, or bringing them back to good shape, as it is communicated throughout your site at [redacted] Vintage Offroad Inc has not performed any needed work on the car and just shipped it to me at a much higher price. After checking private sellers and competing businesses, it was your word, your guarantee, that convinced me to put my trust in you, in your confidence, and pay the price you asked in full.Your last offer of 1000 USD to “make it right” is a nice gesture –thank you- but not the solution I am expecting from a business that I have trusted.Indeed, as I wrote you, I am out of the country and returning next week. I have, however, written back to your emails two weeks ago asking for a time to chat on the phone. You have never answered.Thank you,Sincerely,[redacted]

Response:

Thank you for the detailed email. I can see you are very passionate. However, It is apparent, you are putting 100% of your "purchase responsibility" on my shoulders. When we both share responsibility. Without drafting a long and complicated response. I accept my portion of the responsibility and simply want to resolve this complaint. Even though this transaction is far past a reasonable timeline, it is our intent to support you with additional expenses by offering you a $1500 dollar credit to be used any way you wish. In addition, when the time is right for you, offer our services to help you re-sell your custom vintage truck at a strong retail price and at no cost to you. Thank you, [redacted]

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear belowAs I have extensively documented in the previous correspondence with Vintage Offroad Inc, I estimate that the truck has to undergo about 8000$ more of work in order to bring it to the conditions it should have been when sold to me for 23,900$. It appears that Vintage Offroad Inc is not new to scam of this kind, as it can be seen by the reviews from previous customers [redacted]Considering the over 2000$ work already done and paid for by me (clutch and transmission, receipts available), I ask Vintage Offroad Inc to pay 10,000$ to bring the truck to the conditions it was described for the sale.Alternatively, I can settle the complaint if Vintage Offroad Inc purchases back the truck for a price of 20,000$.Thank you,Sincerely,[redacted]

Vintage Offroad, Inc. just sold my FJ40 and I would like to tell everyone about it.

I live in California and I bought a FJ40 a few years ago in good original condition just needing a few things here and there which led to about $100k of investment meaning a through full ground up restoration. Say Crazy, right? Hey, I am a car guy and it had to be perfect and just the way I like it. On the other hand, my wife hated it from the bottom of her heart so I decided to sell my FJ40.

I researched and I did find some local Land Cruiser dealers who are actually very popular around Los Angeles area in selling FJ40s, FJ60s, etc. After talking to them and looking at their choppy work, it reminded me of (no offense) old ladies and men with lots of cosmetic surgeries and lots of makeup which wasn’t appealing to me. After some more research, I finally found the place and the person who I could trust with my FJ40 which was Vintage Offroad. I must tell you they handled the whole transaction perfectly; from introducing my vehicle to the public on their site, finding the right customer, negotiating the sale, shipping my vehicle across the country, handling the paperwork, and the most important thing getting the money I wanted for my beautiful FJ40 wired into my account.

So, I wanted to thank Vintage Offroad and their real deal professional work.

Sincerely,

Max

Review: After business failed to meet obligations to deliver product, business agreed upon full refund. It has been almost two years and I have received two partial payments but never full payment of agreed upon refund. Recently I received a payment that was supposed to conclude the full agreed upon payment. The payment check "For" line stated "payment in Full". That was not the case. It was $5,000.00 short of "final payment". This issue has been going on for almost two years and I see at this point that the business owner has/had no intention in paying me in full. As I now read other complaints regarding this company, it appears this is a trend of this business and owner to continue to mislead and conduct his business in an unprofessional and dishonest fashion.Desired Settlement: Payment of the remaining $5,000.00 owed to me.

Review: Back in April of 2012, I purchased a 1978 [redacted] FJ40from [redacted] of Vintage Offroad. It was advertised as "Very low original miles, cold air conditioning, etc... Two of the main reasons I bought this vehicle. I have the original documentation and pictures showing that he advertised this as 57,995 miles on the speedometer. After negotiating the upgrades and restoration of this vehicle,(If one calls this a restoration)I went to Flagstaff in July of 2013 to pick it up. Upon returning home, I find out that the speedometer/gauge cluster was switched out, the new paint was chipping off, (just from being trailered back to Colorado),there was parts and labor that I paid for that was not installed in the vehicle and worst of all, the engine was shot. I took it to Firestone and had a compression test done on the motor and all the cylinders had very low compression. And this was advertised as low mileage 57,995 miles. There is false advertising of a motor vehicle, false advertising of the mileage of a motor vehicle, and changing out the odometer of a motor vehicle. Also, when this vehicle was purchased from the previous owner by Vintage Offroad, title was never transferred into Vintage Offroad business, but then sent to me direct. This is also against the law. [redacted] said he would stand behind the vehicle, and offered $5000.00 for me to keep it and fix the motor. At that time I told him I did not want the truck, and was told the only other thing he could do was sell it for me. 3 months after not being sold, I told [redacted] I am keeping the truck, and will take the $5000.00 for the motor repair. Now he says he can't come up with the money.Desired Settlement: [redacted] promised he would make good on the motor and offered me $5000.00. The repairs I had to make go far beyond that figure, such as emissions, headers, exhaust, correct weather stripping, paint, the list goes on. I have pictures and documentation and all e-mails to back up my complaint. All I'm asking for is the original $5000.00 that he offered for the motor.

Review: I purchased and paid up front for a 1979 toyota fj40 land cruiser in January 2015. [redacted], owner operator of Vintage Offroad vehicles, made me a deal on the truck that included reconditioning of the vehicle in his shop. I flew out to [redacted] to see his operation and the truck. At that time we concluded the purchase, paid approximately $32,000 for it and he was to make delivery in about four to six weeks and I agreed to it.He soon started making excuses delaying the work, not communicating with me but maybe every three or four weeks, when I tried to call he wouldn't answer and his voicemail was always full, leaving me only email or texting to communicate! When we did talk it would always be ready first of next month! March, April, then May, June.Just recently said July! He had mentioned on my visit his favorite thing to do for customers was to take pictures and send them to keep them updated on progress , he has sent two groups of very poor pics and only because I hounded him for them. His biggest excuse has been lack of employees, but when I visited the shop he made a point to introduce four or five that had been there for "years" !Desired Settlement: refund my full amount paid to you for the vehicle since you are unable to deliver in a timely manner as agreed!

Hello [redacted], I am very surprised by this complaint. However I do understand you frustrations. The delays have been difficult for us too. We spoke in detail this past Thursday June 4th 2015 regarding the negative feedback you were planning on posting. Regards,

I bought an iconic truck from Vintage and drove it across the west with no worries. Vintage has a lot of great vehicles and great mechanics to get you on the road.

Recently purchased a 68 FJ40 from Vintage Offroad. I love the Cruiser I got. It was exactly as advertised by Greg on the website and in the many phone calls I had with Greg. Greg knew I has new to the Cruiser world and on a tight budget and helped me every step of the way. Greg kept me informed of all of the work he did on my Cruiser by email and texts and always with photos. All of my dealings with Greg were extremely professional and friendly. He responded immediately to all emails and to all phone calls. He has even been there for me post sale in helping me locate a few parts I want to add. In short Greg did what he said he was going to do and when he said he would do it. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Vintage Offroad. Thanks Greg.

Review: The owner of Vintage Offroad has been ignoring my repeated requests for help in clearing up the botched paint job on a 1980 FJ40 truck he delivered to me several months ago. I paid him $2,000.00 for a "top of the line" paint job, and when I contacted him about it peeling and flaking, he answered my initial email, then dropped all other correspondence with me. I emailed him again, twice, and he never got back to me. My problem with the owner, [redacted], his pattern of non-communication or late, sparse communication since I bought the truck--he ignores emails and phone messages for weeks on end! It might take weeks for him to respond to several emails and phone calls! At this point, the expensive paint job is not only flaking, but rusting through. The paint mildewed within a few months of my receiving the truck. It began flaking within a few months, it began rusting through within months. I have turned to the Revdex.com because I fully expected Mr. [redacted] to continue ignoring every attempt by me to contact him, even though I told him I would have to get a lawyer involved.Desired Settlement: I would like my $2,000.00 back so that I can have my truck painted by a reputable automobile painter. I need to have the rust spots repaired, and I need to know the exact color of paint used on my truck.

Business

Response:

Now I look back now and realize I never responded to you. Actually I got so busy with my mother's care that I forgot. She passed away 2 weeks later. At the same time I was supporting my Father who is supporting form MDS syndrome a bone marrow/blood disease. He has had many close calls this summer. And to be frank I have been just overwhelmed with keeping up with correspondence. Not an excuse, but a fact. So, I dropped the ball in getting back to you back in April. And I sincerely apologies for that. For reference purposes: See attached images of the before original rust free truck and the beautifully refurbished Toyota we shipped you... I will cut to the chase on this... your issue with rust on your beautifully refurbished Toyota is not the $2000 paint job, but the way you are parking & storing the truck. Re-read the above email correspondence and you are storing the truck outside in the elements. I researched Mobile Al and it is one of the wettest places in the US. Leaving you beautiful Land Cruiser outside in the elements is the cause of the fast declining condition of the truck. It is so damp & humid where you live, it will eventually rust even if it was parked in a garage or car port, simply because it is so wet where you live.. The link below to what causes the deterioration and what you can do to prevent it... [redacted] Now, I would like very much to continue to support you now that I figured out I dropped the ball with the paint code. What I am happy to do, is research a good paint shop and pay for the paint that they would used to repaint the truck. I will pay for the materials. By the way the paint code is Toyota Dune Beige 416 Best regards, [redacted]

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID 9651308, and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below. In response to my complaint, [redacted] sent me a couple paragraphs from a site he found on-line regarding rust, which stated that old cars left outside will, inevitably, rust. It didn't say "New paint jobs will rust within one year, when left outside," which is my case, and the reason it doesn't say that is that new paint jobs don't rust, not if the paint job is GOOD, and new. The paint job on my FJ, in Mr [redacted]o's own words, is new. Freshly painted vehicles do not rust down here, even if parked outside. Mr [redacted] says he researched this area and he blames the rust on the dampness down here. He is obviously UNaware that thousands of people park their cars outside in this city, without any rust problems, what so ever, for years and years. The sited paragraphs, therefore, do not apply to the "new paint job" (his words as well as mine), nor to the place I park my truck.Mr. [redacted] promised me, up-and-down, that he would guarantee that paint job, yet he has done nothing but supply me with excuse after excuse, none of which are substantial, and none of which come from an educated compilation of facts. [redacted]'s staff did some good work on my truck. I can vouch for several things his mechanics did well. However, the paint job is not one of them, and the paint job is very important. Every "body shop" told me that the rust was on the truck before they painted it, and that it has now rusted through. [redacted] told me, "the paint job I'm going to give your truck is the same one used on Mercedes Benz cars, and I guarantee it." I challenge Mr. [redacted] to stand by his word, to guarantee his work and refund my 2-thousand dollars so I can have the truck properly painted.Regards,[redacted]

Response:

I am sorry you feel this way [redacted], I really enjoyed working with you on your Toyota Land Cruiser Project. You were patient, kind and an all around nice person. In Sept 2012 we delivered your finished truck. We had no complaints form you or your husband about the paint. We were all proud of our work. The paint turned out great you received "a full repaint job in and out" for a fraction of the cost of an independent paint shop. Since we strive to be supportive after the sale, we helped with some mechanical issues when it arrived at your home in Mobile. You indicated there was an issue with the carburetor, so we immediately arranged to have a mechanic fix it at no cost to you. Everyone went away satisfied. After your recent email explained that you have been storing you truck outside all this time, we understand why your truck is showing rust. I am sure storing your repainted Landcruiser outside is innocent decision. If you ask people in the old car, restoration and or paint industry they will confirm that is a direct cause for what you are experiencing. By the way, your friend Jerome, from Prescott AZ, parks his new car in the garage every night to protect it from the outdoor elements and Arizona is a dry state. While these Land Cruisers are tough and rugged to look at and drive. They do not do well left outside in the elements. The metal they used back then is highly prone to rusting (unlike modern vehicles) if left in the rain, with or without a new paint job. For your reference, I found a dozen related car maintenance websites, talking about the risk of leaving a car stored outside. See below.[redacted] Unfortunately I do not agree that we are to blame for the corrosion to your truck. Your preference for leaving the truck outside is the culprit. Regards, [redacted]

Consumer

Response:

Mr. [redacted], Please understand, I was born in the south, grew up in the south and am now living in the south. I know about rust. Those little Google links you keep sending have no bearing on my case because my truck started rusting within months of my acquisition of it, which does not happen to vehicles that have good paint jobs. You also told me the truck has been coated, inside and out, with Rhino Shield. You charged me $300.00, Mr. [redacted], to clean and undercoat my truck with Rhino Shield. Maybe the rhino shield is as faulty as the paint job. Anyone familiar with Rhino knows that it has a lifetime warranty, and that it certainly would not fail within the first several months of application. We are now wondering if you defaulted in two areas, the paint job, and the application of Rhino Shield. If the paint and the Rhino Shield were both applied correctly, there is absolutely no reason for my truck to rust in less than one year of its arrival here. How can you not see that? Not to be smart, but would you like a lesson in elementary physics? Step up to the plate and stand by your word, your guarantee, and all those flowery promises you gave me before I paid for the truck, which you insisted I do in full before you ever did a lick of work on it.

I have known [redacted] of Vintage Offroad for four years. I purchased a 1979 Toyota Land Cruiser from him in 2010. I had some mechanical issues with the vehicle and [redacted] was pleasant about taking care of those even after I paid for the vehicle. How many other places do you purchase a vehicle from and they pay for mechanical issues after the sale ? Answer : none , but [redacted] did. This showed me that [redacted] is a man of character and he is more interested in making sure your experience with purchasing your vehicle from him is a positive experience. I ended up selling my Land Cruiser a few years later to move onto another vehicle and [redacted] sold my Land Cruiser. I cannot say enough positive adjectives about him ! He is extremely knowledgeable about vintage vehicles , a wealth of knowledge. The wonderful thing about [redacted] is you can tell he is passionate about his business , he is there to talk to after the sale. I am working on acquiring another vintage vehicle from [redacted]. Repeat business tells the story. [redacted] is a good man !
