Vitale's A Salon Reviews (1)

Review: On Saturday, February 8, 2014 I had a haircut and single process color with [redacted] (salon owners daughter) at Vitale's A Salon. I was a first time customer to the salon and I went there on a recommendation I received from a friend of a friend. I made the appointment on the phone with Blas (the owner) and I specifically stated I wanted a semi-permanent hair color, which is commonly referred to as a glaze. Without being overly technical, semi-permanent hair dye contains little to no ammonia and the process requires no maintenance as the color washes out of your hair after 3-4 weeks. Permanent hair dyes contain ammonia which has a strong chemical fume. Permanent hair color grows out and as it does that the root of the hair grows in a different color (in my case darker). The color must be must be touched up every 4-6 weeks. When I arrived at the salon, I reiterated that I wanted semi-permanent hair color and I was adamant that I wanted a single process color that did not require maintenance. Like in most salons, the stylist went into the back room to mix the color. It was applied to my hair and then I was instructed to sit under heat lamps. Within a few minutes my scalp started to burn. In my previous experience with semi-permanent hair color, there has never been heat applied. While [redacted] was rinsing the color out of my hair, I had to sit up and wipe my eyes because the smell of the dye was so irritating. I have never had this reaction with semi-permanent hair color. The resulting color was just a shade or so different from my natural color so I told the stylist and the salon owner I was pleased. Four weeks later, I noticed that my hair was growing in darker and I knew at that moment that they had used a permanent hair color. Not only am I responsible to maintain the hair color process now that my roots are growing in a different color than the hair that was treated, but I also have health concerns. I am not pregnant, but I am of the age to start a family and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) discourages the use of permanent hair dyes and suggests semi-permanent dyes may be considered safer. I am extremely angry that the salon used permanent hair color when I asked for semi-permanent hair color. On Friday, March 7, 2014, I called the salon to get more information about the product that was used and the owner was uncooperative and extremely rude to me.Desired Settlement: I requested a process that did not require ongoing maintenance and now I will need to color my hair every 6 weeks to hide the regrowth. I would like the salon to compensate me for the cost of a semi-permanent single process color at the cost of $50 per process for the next year (8 treatments), for a total of $435.
