Walter Bauman Jewelers, Inc. Reviews (1)
Hello, I would like to begin by letting everyone know – Be Cautious and alert.
I came into this Walter Bauman store (West Orange, NJ, 07052) on November 10th 2015 and spoke to one of the sales persons on the team. I will not disclose the name so they shall be referred to as “R”. I was picking out a gold name necklace for my mother for Christmas(Hannukah for her). I had picked out a 14K gold necklace with a nameplate. I did not like the chain that came with that original necklace so I asked if I could choose another chain to go with the nameplate. “R” showed me other chains and helped me pick out a different chain for an additional cost. We picked out an original necklace with a nameplate and a separate chain. The original necklace and nameplate was $200. The separate chain was going to be another $200. The grand total was going to be $400 plus taxes. I was fine with that price even ready to put the %50 down payment. “R” stated that they could reduce the overall price by $40 by only replacing the chain and letting the store keep my original necklace. I was not interested. I said “I think that the original necklace’s gold is worth more than the $40 difference, so I want to keep the original necklace as a backup”. “R” said that there would be additional charges at this time for putting the separate chain onto the nameplate. I asked “R” how much. “R” said that they did not know how much and would have to get a manager. The manager had left for the night so “R” stated that a manager or “R” would get back to me the following day on November 11th 2015. I waited on November 11th 2015 for someone to get back to me. No one contacted me. I am sad; because, I was referred to this place by multiple people and now I have to go back and tell them about this incident. I am posting this on November 11th 2015 at the latest possible time as I have waited all day for their response. I will be following up and posting an update shortly. I am letting everyone know – Be cautious and alert. If you have any questions or need me to elaborate please leave a comment.
I will be posting 3 updates -
UPDATE - November 12 2015 - The sales person on the team "R" "contacted me today. They informed me that there would be no additional charges for adding the nameplate to the separate chain. Also, the option of keeping the original necklace for the aforementioned price of $400 plus taxes would work. I still feel some sort of way about this situation. I question how the sales person could not know about additional charges and why he wanted to keep my original necklace with a discount of $40. I will decide on this exchange at a later time. I will post a final update shortly.
UPDATE – November 13 2015 – I went ahead and visited four other jewelry stores to get a better understanding of jewelry. I purchased a gold name necklace from another store.
UPDATE – November 14 2015 – The store manager called me after reading my review. He asked me why I did not give the store a chance to respond. I let him know that I did talk to “R” on November 12 2015 and that the representative told me there would be no additional fees and that I could keep the original necklace for the price of $400 plus taxes. Also, I told the manager that I felt some sort of way about the whole exchange and that I ordered my products from another store. The manager offered for me to come in so that he could make it right and do good by me. I declined; however, kept things open for the possibility of a future visit. I mentioned to the manager that it is a shame; because, the reputation coming to me was that this store was the only place I needed to visit for my jewelry needs. Unfortunately, it is far from the truth and I implore customers to shop around for information and not only visit one place. I will not be taking down this review even if I do go back to Walter Bauman’s. I will write another review if I ever do make that trip.
Reply to comment November 17 2015 - I am replying to the comment left by the Walter Bauman store. I take issue with this specific statement. "Our associate made it a point to go the extra step and speak with the manager so that he was able to offer you our service of replacing the chain for free." This statement is inaccurate. Not for nothing but if you don’t know something about your job and you have to find out then that’s not making it a point to go the extra step. Next, the nameplate had to be created and put on a chain. Therefore, you are not replacing anything unless you’re putting the nameplate on the original chain then putting it on the new chain. I also take issue with the fact that the prices are not written down for services and neither are their discounts.
