My fee is $200.00 per hour, and thirty minutes is one-half of an hour, which wouldjustify a fee of $100.00. I evidently deducted half of that because of time that spent of beinginterrupted by a phone call from my son. But I did not charge this to her. I charged her for 15minutes of my time.When she told me her story, I also decided that nothing could be done that I knew about.Apparently I even went on the computer and tried to look up some.law to see if there was anyway I could help her. My conclusion was that it was very doubtful that anything could be done,and that even if it was, the cost of doing it would greatly exceed the amount of the judgement. Itold her that the only thing to be done to get this off the records of her husband or boyfriend (I donot remember which it was, but it was that person and not her, against whom the judgementexisted) would be to get the judgement creditor to release the judgement. She did not like thatanswer and she left.My desk was undoubtedly a mess. It nearly always has been for all the time I havepracticed law. It is not unusual for lawyers to have files stacked all over their desk and all overthe room, because the law is a paper intensive business and most of us keep things on our desk toremind us if we still have not finished them until the work is finished. I am sure that in the biglaw firms, they have some system by which these files are kept somewhere else and can be calledup on demand by the lawyer whu is working on them, but that is not the way one man smalltown law offices work.I am sorry if she thought that I was unprofessional with her.This was a consultation. I do not give free consultations. Enclosed is a copy of a noticethat is on my wall, directly over my head and directly in front of where people coming into myoffice sit, which makes it quite clear that I am going to charge whether I ultimately end up takingtheir case or reject it. I charged her exactly in accordance with the terms of this notice. I amsorry that she is disappointed and unhappy. but she was notified by this notice that she would bepaying for her time in conference with me. and I do not feel she has any legitimate complaintabout the services I gave her, since I deducted fifteen minutes for the time that I did not spend onher business, which was probably substantially more than the time involved, and she probablygot a bill smaller than it would have been if I had actually kept the time that I spent while shewas in the office that was not on her case.Very truly yours,[redacted] [redacted]
