Sometime in September or October in 2015, The Customer came into myshop and wanted an engine, that customer purchased in Spokane, installed in his Chevy Blazer, customer explained that the currentengine was knocking and believed it was not going to last much longer.I
told customer that the work would run about $1,as long ascustomer had all the parts and didn't need any extra parts in order for meto complete the installation of the engine, The Customer agreed and saidok lets go ahead and set up an appointmentThe Customer paid me$1,and said if I needed any other parts to complete the work thathe would pay for them
The Customer had purchased some minor parts but still needed more tocomplete the installationOnce I received all the parts needed, the enginewas installed and ready for The Customer to pick upWhen the customerpicked up the Blazer, he apparently drove it for a little over milesand had trouble with the engineHe called the shop and I asked him tobring the Blazer back down so I could check it out and see what mighthave happenedHe had the Blazer towed down to the shop for me tocheck out the engine trouble
I removed the oil pan and discovered metal shavings in the bottom of theoil pan, which most generally means, something is wrong in the engine,so I re-installed the oil pan and waited for customer to call so I couldexplain to him what I found and what I suggest the next step should be.Some time had passed and I tried to get a hold o fThe Customer but thenumber given me was no longer workingSo I waited for The customerto call meWhen he finally did, a couple weeks later, I informed TheCustomer what I had found and told him, "to contact the engine builderand see what steps needed to be taken next" He called the engine builderand explain to him what was going on with the engine, he said that Ishould remove the engine and have it shipped down to the his shop forhim to see for himselfSo I contacted a shipper and had it sent down tohis shop.Later I spoke with the engine builder about some work I wanted to getdone on another projectHe told me he had disassembled The Customersmotor and it looked like the damage was a direct result from not havingthe correct carburator on the motorThe engine builder had told TheCustomer numerous times that this type of engine needed a largercarburator and without it could potentially damage the engineI hadinstalled The Customer's carburator on the motor because as he said,"this is all I have and I would get the correct one later when I could affordit."
More time had passed and I hadn't heard from The Customer, when Ifinally did, he said, "that it might be sometime before his engine isrepaired and that he really needed his vehicle to get in firewood." Isuggested to him that I had a used engine that I would install to get himby until his motor was completedHe accused me of trying to get hisnew expensive motor in trade for my old used one and I told him thatwas not the case at all, and that I was just trying to help him out of a badspot, and that I wanted my used engine back when his motor wascompleted by the builder in SpokaneWe talked it over, and decided toinstall my used engineAfter the used engine was installed, I didn't haveany contact with him for sometime, probably about monthsI hadgotten worried that something may of happened to him during the winterso I contacted the Hospital here in Colville, and the Police Dept., Ieventually was directed to the Pend Orielle Sheriffs Office, they had toldme they could do what they called a Welfare Check and they would getback to me in a couple of daysWhen they did, they informed me he wasok, I asked them to have The Customer get ahold of me, but they saidthey could not do thatNot long after that The Customer came into theshop and said that he had been ill and that was the reason he had notbeen in for so longWe talked about the Blazer and I told him it wasrunning with the used engine and he said " he had no way to pay for it."I told him when the new engine was repaired I would hold it until Icould get my old engine back, we would switch it out again and allwould be well
He once again accused me of trying to get his new engine so I could sellit and make a lot of money, and AGAIN I told him, I did not want hismotor all I wanted was my used engine backHe said he would thinkabout it and let me know what he decided
After a few days, he called me, he said he was using a borrowed phoneand couldn't talk long, he told me about a Blazer he had eitherpurchased or traded for that he wanted to give me for my used motor, plus the installation of the motorI told The Customer that I was notinterested in the Blazer, but a few days later a tow truck showed up atthe shop with the BlazerSoon after that Customer showed up at theshop wanting his Blazer, so by this time I just wanted to be done withthis deal, so I let him take the vehicleI thought everything was fineuntil I was contacted by the Engine Builder that my used engine that hadbeen installed had trouble and that The Customer was taking me toCourtBoth the Engine Builder and I are willing to work with TheCustomer to resolve this matter,
I still am not sure why The Customer thinks I am at fault for the enginefailure that He had purchased
Both the engine builder and myself have many years of experience withthis style of engine and believe that the damage is the result of TheCustomer not having the correct carburator and/or something he haddone when the vehicle was in his possession
The small claims court ruled in my favor on this matter on July 28th
