I am writing to you in response to complaint #[redacted] which was filed on September 1st, 2015. The student this involves was a nineteen year old who had participated on two of our other programs at sixteen years of age. The trip he chose and enrolled in this summer was one of our more challenging...

trips designed for students of his age. It was rated in our catalog and on our website as having a challenge level of 5 based on a scale of 1-5. Shortly after the program commenced in a remote wilderness area of Alaska, it was evident to the leaders that the student did not want to be there. At the end of the backpacking portion of the trip (the mid-point of the trip), he complained loudly of shoulder soreness. Our leaders decided to take him to a physician to have his shoulder examined. Along the way, the student admitted to the leaders that he "didn't think anything was physically wrong with it and that a doctor probably wouldn't help."  The leaders brought him to the clinic anyway. The physician could not find anything wrong with his shoulder and felt that the student could continue on the trip. They physician recommended a massage as treatment. The student was still adamant about leaving the program. At that point, we decided to have a conference call with the boy, his parents, and his leaders. During this call, the father insisted that the boy stay on the trip. The student said that he was over eighteen years of age and could make his own decisions. We made the decision to send the student home because we could not risk having him on the next portion of the trip, which was an extended sea kayaking excursion on Prince William Sound, when he did not want to be there. The student's parents purchased a tuition refund plan for $475.00 which is designed for students with a serious physical injury or ailment that prevents them from completing a trip. It is not intended for people who choose to leave for whatever reason. In this particular case, he had no serious injury that would have prevented him from continuing to participate. We did not grant a refund. I would also like to point out that the student's father had his assistant call three days after he returned home from Alaska, attempting to enroll him on another trip we conduct in Hawaii. The Hawaii program included surfing and sea kayaking, two activities that require extensive shoulder use. It should be very clear that this boy chose to leave the trip because he did not want to participate on it. Sincerely,[redacted]     Program Director
