Regarding the Nissan Altima, the vehicle was dropped off to Willands Tech Auto by Mr*** wife and daughter. The customers stated the vehicle was running rough and was cranking ok but intermittently slow to start and rough running after starting. It was
communicated to them we would need their permission to run our diagnostics and confirm the problems the vehicle was showing. We explained to them it would take one hour and had Mr*** daughter sign a work order authorizingone hour of diagnostics and then giving them an estimate to fix the problems. She agreed, signed the work order, and her mother explained to her at the counter that she needed to payfor the diagnostics to find out what was wrong with the vehicle. Our service writer agreed and she gave us the keys and we scheduled the diagnostics testing.The Technician assigned to the vehicle took it on a test drive to verify problems and confirmed the customer’s complaint of rough running was present. He then scanned the vehicle with a computerized scanner and found the following codes PO0335 Crank Shaft Positioning Sensor (CPS) and code POEngine Speed Sensor (ESS). He then analyzed the data stream,performed start up tests and found three different times no RPM signal present during cranking. Technician found that the CPS was bad and needed to be replaced. Our Technician performed a complimentary vehicle inspection and found eight additional areas that needed to be addressed Later when talking to Mr*** regarding the technician’s findings he said that he had replaced the CPS and Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS), upon investigating further after the phone conversation found he did not replace the CPS but the Vehicle Speed Sensor VSS (replacing the wrong sensor) The Service Writer phoned Mr***, then gave an estimate for replacing the CPS with included the diagnostics, CPS price, and the time to replace the CPS (it is difficult to get to). He said he had already replaced it, so after more investigation come to find out he replaced the VSS, he also shown us an invoice he had returned the part (CPS) that needed to be replaced to the store. Mr*** thought the estimate for replacing the CPS was too high and declined the repairs; he told the Service Writer that he was going to park the vehicle. Mr*** wife and daughter came in and picked up the vehicle without any complaints and paid the one hour of diagnostic time and left with a copy of the estimates for the CPS and additional areas of concern.Apparently Mr*** did not trust thefirst diagnostics from and earlier source or it was incomplete and wanted Willands Tech Auto to diagnose and tell him what was wrong with the vehicle for no charge so he could again try to fix it himself. Our charge for diagnostics is at industry standards. Diagnostics is the most expensive operation in a repair shop requires sophisticated equipment, higher then entry level of schooling and salary for our technicians. Just code reading performed by a parts store and replacing parts is not enough, itdoes not tell you why the problems are occurring and does not always fix the root problem.
