This is the formal incident report I wrote to the board of professional health workers
On November 11th 2015, I made the extremely hard decision to euthanize my 12 year old cat who was diagnosed with kidney disease in June. My previous Veterinarian told me that as long as she is eating, drinking and active that she is fine but that the Kidney disease could not be reversed. She had been on a consistent regiment of fluid treatments and a medicine I administered twice a day. He told me that when she stops eating, drinking and being active, I should think about euthanizing her. A few days before the incident, she was starting to show these symptoms. She had been continuously losing weight but I was told that was normal for her diagnosis. Late, November 10th she started to rapidly decline and become lethargic. I immediately took the day off work so that I could take her to the vet. Unfortunately, because I moved to Virginia in September, my vet was in Maryland so I looked online to see the closest place I could take her. I chose Dr. K[redacted] Cat Clinic in Woodbridge because he was close and specialized in cats. When I arrived, the doctor was busy so his assistant took my information on a post it note. When the doctor came out, he asked me the exact same information I already told his assistant. I told him about her kidneys and pointed out the prescription food I fed her that he had in his lobby. He asked me what her levels were. I did not know what he meant but said I would be happy to call my vet and ask but he seemed annoyed and said forget it I’ll just check her out. He led me back to an extremely unclean examination room. I had her wrapped in a blanked and he grabbed her violently by the scruff of her neck and dragged her across the table to the scale. He then yelled at me about how underweight she was and I told him I knew that and that’s why I needed his help. He then squeezed her skin roughly and said she was dehydrated. At that point I said that I did not feel comfortable about the way he was handling my sick and in pain cat so I wrapped her back in the blanket and told them I needed to leave. They followed me out and told me I owed them $95.00 for the “examination”. I told them he did not examine my cat and tried to leave. The door was locked and when I tried to unlock it, the assistant put her hand over the lock. I told them that I would call the police if they did not let me leave. There was another man present, who seemed to work in the office who also stood in my way. After a short time, Dr. K[redacted] used his body to force me out and told me to leave and never come back. He also said he was going to report me to animal services because of the state of my cat. I was extremely offended because he could visibly see how upset I was and he did not know what I have gone through to keep her healthy and comfortable. I was seeking his help and he scared me to the point I called the police. I filed my complaint with the Woodbridge Police department not only because he abused my sick cat but he also detained me and verbally abused me. Under the advice of the officer who took my statement, I took my cat to the Woodbridge animal hospital and had her euthanized at 2:00 p.m. I do not believe that anyone should have to experience that kind of distress on the same day that they have to say good bye to a member of their family. I am 35 and do not have children. She was my child and I am devastated that she had to spend experience the detriment of Dr. K[redacted] on her last day of life. The guilt I feel for taking her to that place is immeasurable. Please take my complaint seriously as I do not want this to happen to anyone else.
