Initial Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2014/04/14) */
***,
I am very sorry that you feel we have done something less than you expectedI have left you two messages trying to reach you and called *** to touch baseHere is the sequence of events that I am aware ofYou DROVE
the vehicle in on 2/18/Your primary concern was that it was running rough and smelled of fuelWe then started it and drove it into our service bay #3, a total of approximately feet, where we noticed that someone else *** replaced the third coil back on the passengers side (which is cylinder number 3)Number cylinder was the one misfiringIt is very common that Ford vehicles will require an ignition coil to be replaced, so it was a reasonable assumption of *** to replace itOur first diagnostic approach was to remove the coil and new spark plug that *** installed and do a compression check on cylinder number As soon as we removed the spark plug, we noticed that it was wet of fuel and the cylinder had liquid fuel in itWe removed the fuel with a vacuum pump, and preformed a compression check which turned out to be within manufacturer specificationWhile removing our compression gauge we noticed that the cylinder had a small amount of liquid fuel in it againIt was then that we discovered that there must be a problem with the fuel injectorThat is where we stopped and called youI had a complete estimate prepared and was in the middle of a sentence, where you stopped me and said "*** your wasting your time talking to me, I don't understandCan you please call *** and explain it to him." I thought that was odd!I know there are many people in this world that are not mechanical and may not know about cars, but who doesn't want to know about their vehicle? I am VERY good at explaining things to peopleYou didn't even take the timeSo I did as you asked, I called *** and I spoke on the phone for over minutes talking about the repairs that he attempted and the diagnosis that Woodside Auto had preformedMOST of that conversation was about the potential damage done to the engine from the fuel injector being stuck openI explained to him about the potential "hydraulic" situation and the potential damage to the catalytic convertersI explained that once the engine ran on all cylinders again, it may have other problemsWe talked about our options, and both agreed that we must move forward and install a new fuel injector and o rings on cylinder number to get the vehicle running on all cylinders againAfter out lengthy conversation, he said he would talk to you and explain it to youThe vehicle sat in my shop over night, until you call me the next morning on 2/19/You authorized the repair for a sum of $My technician and I removed the fuel rail on the passengers side and began the repair when you called back and asked my service writer to have the technician change the oil with "synthetic oil"THIS was also STRANGEWith the potential damage to the engine looming, who would put almost $dollars worth of oil into it until we knew the outcomeI told my technician to immediately stop working on the vehicle until I cleared things upI immediately called *** back and told him of my concernI told him that *** just called and wanted a "synthetic oil change" and that she must not understand the severity of the problem and the potential damage to the engineThis made me nervous!! I tried to call *** back, but there was no answer, So I asked *** to call me back after he cleared things upHe called me back and said she understood and to continue with the authorized repairsMy technician and I completed the repairs and started the engineIt immediately ran smooth and on all cylindersUnfortunately my concern was validated when we heard a knocking sound from the engineWe cautiously warmed up the vehicle in our service bay, paying close attention to oil pressure and to the catalytic convertersI don't remember who I called next, but I called them back and told them of the noise and that the car was in one pieceI talked to *** about the next step in the repair processIt would either be to preform a tear down of the engine in the vehicle or to replace it with a new or rebuilt oneI gave *** an estimate of $dollars to preform a tear down or $to replace the engine*** and *** came shortly there after and picked up the vehicleFeeling sorry for ***, I lowered the price of the repair we preformed to a level of cost, which was $I was hoping that this would lessen the blow and it made me feel better about the bad news I had to give to ***
*** called me a short time later and told me that she was doing research on line and found out that in 2005, Ford opened a recall (#XXXXX) affecting over 58,vehicles for faulty fuel injectors that could potentially cause damage to the engines for "hydraulicing" enginesShe was wondering if the recall was applicable to model years, So I did some research and *** came down to the shop for me to explain my findings and pick up the paperwork that I had prepared for herUnfortunately Ford has not extended the recall to the model year vehiclesI gave her several numbers to Ford Motor Company and explained that she should call them and try to work around their recallThat was the last time I heard from *** until this complaint was filed with the Revdex.com
I do understand *** s' frustration, however there is nothing that I could have done differently to change the outcome
Reading the complaint filed, it says she took the vehicle to a repair shop before bringing it to Woodside AutoI called that repair shop, which by the way is a muffler shop with no certified technicians, and spoke to the owner, *** said that *** DROVE the poorly running vehicle down to the muffler shop to ask him what he thought*** did not have time to look at it right away, so *** DROVE it awayShortly there after, *** again DROVE it back to the "muffler" shop*** noticed the new coil and did not know what was wrong with it, so he recommended bringing it to Woodside AutoThat is when *** again DROVE it to Woodside Auto where we were able to diagnose it properly
My point to the above paragraph, is that the vehicle was DRIVEN all over town, before it ended up at Woodside AutoAlthough *** did attempt a legitimate repair, if it was the ignition coil and spark plug, unfortunately his assumption was very wrong, and *** s' failure to have it properly diagnosed, before driving it all over town, may be the reason for the engine damageOn the other hand, the damage may have happened immediately following the injector failure, and no amount, or lack there of driving the vehicle would have matteredOnly God know that answer
The other concern that *** has is that the engine didn't make the knocking noise before she brought it to Woodside AutoShe is RIGHT! Sometimes when there is damage to the internal components of an engine, they won't make noise until there is combustion on top of the pistonWith the fuel injector stuck wide open on cylinder #3, the cylinder is too wet, or too rich, to promote ignitionThat is why the vehicle was running poorly, or on cylindersOnce we got the fuel injector fixed, cylinder number was now able to fire, creating combustion and pushing down the piston, making the noiseThere was no way for us to know if the engine was going to make a noise, that is why I had the lengthy conversation with *** in the fore mentioned paragraphs
As far as the concern about the repairs not being done, or done correctly, that offends meThe injector and o-rings that were replace, were replaced on the third cylinder back on the passengers side, (which is cylinder number 3) not cylinder number 6, like our invoice suggestsMy service writer made a clerical error on their paperwork, but in fact the repairs were done and done correctly
***, I am very good at what I doI am very good at explaining things to customersI have been a mechanic for yearsI am certified as a Master Technician and take pride in my work, and my honestyI hold an open door policy for concernsI am VERY sorry for your troubles, however there is nothing I could have done differently that would have changed the outcomeThere may have been things that you, or *** could have done differently that would have had an affect on the outcomeI have already lowered the price of the repair to my cost and feel there is nothing more I can do for you
I am willing however to have a meeting (in person) with You, *** anyone else you want, and I so that you can FULLY understand the situation and where the misunderstanding started
*** ***
