I called [redacted] and told him that I thought my 17in HP laptop computer needed a new fan. I took the computer to his office on 4/28/14 and after listening to it he said that I needed a new fan and that it would cost $250 which I declined. He charged me $60 for the visit and said that it could be applied to the fan replacement or any of his services. I feel that this charge was a rip-off after he quoted me $100 and did nothing except get me to his office.I called him several times and told him about my complaint and asked him for a refund. He has not responded.Desired SettlementHe should never have quoted me $100 on the phone and then given me a $250 quote when I took it to his office and then charged me $60 for the visit. I do not want to apply the $60 for any of his services nor do I want to have to do with him after this experience that I think has the makings of a scam.Business Response A fan on a desktop and certain ones on laptops can be that low but that wasn't the case. I always charge a evaluation fee of $60 if nothing is done that day, the fan would be closer to $250 due to labor time if you want to do this the $60 you paid will be given as a credit towards that or any other purchase / repair. My fees are all stated on my website and thats why I get customers to come in before I order equipment as I stated over the phone before the visit. Labor rates are $85 per hour and with the CPU fan on that laptop it would be two hours of labor plus parts totaling more than $220. In this case I advised customer that I would not put $200 into a laptop of that age and offered the evaluation fee of $60 for that day as a credit towards and new purchase or repair in the future. There will be no refund, I never have had any complaints. You can't please everyone. Customer has not called me about this but has emailed me threatening to file with Revdex.com, I wrote back and explained this as on here.Consumer Response I understand the general policy of charging $60 if nothing is done. However, in my case I was quoted on the phone a charge of $100 to fix the fan on my 17in HP laptop computer. It is unethical to tell me after I bring it in, expecting it to be repaired, that it will cost $250 and then charge me $60. Moreover, his $250 charge is exorbitant and I do not want to apply the $60 charge to to that fee. I'm getting the repair done elsewhere for much less. The crux of the matter is that he should never have quoted me a price on the phone and then telling me, after I brought the laptop in, that it would cost more tan twice as much and charging me $60 towards the excessive price of the repair that I don't want done by him. This seems like a bait and switch tactic to me.Final Business Response Again my rates are all on my website and with the labor of the Fan that is bad it would be around $250. I told the customer this on the phone that some fans are a little as $100 ($85 for 1 hour of labor and $15 for the fan) but this was not that type of fan. I never order parts over the phone and thus asked the customer to bring it in for an evaluation then we could decide if it was worth fixing and order parts. I told the customer that I would not put the $250 in that laptop if it was my own, in an honest attempt to tell him to move on towards a new machine. Some people simply have to learn things the hard way, if he gets it done elsewhere cheaper then I'm sure it will not last for long, I see customers come in all the time with botched repairs done by unqualified repairmen for "Cheap." I don't want to hear anything else about this simple charge for an evaluation fee by a professional. If he didn't like my charges then he should have went elsewhere in the beginning.
