Wrigtht Roofing improperly installed a roof on my house in Jan 2018.
*** installed a roof on my house in Jan 2018 because I had a leak. In September 2018, I discovered that I now have at least 3 leaks. I also discovered that some of the chimney flashing is improperly installed. *** has attempted to patch my roof twice and it still leaks. Now, I want my money back because I have to hire another roofing contractor to completely replace my roof. Another roofing contractor stated that some of the flashing is improperly installed. I have asked *** to refund $4000 of the $4250. that I paid him for the roof. *** refuses to refund my money.

Desired Outcome

I want Wright Roofing to refund $4000. of the initial cost of installing the new roof.

Wright's Roofing & Contracting Service Response • Dec 10, 2018

In response the Revdex.com (Revdex.com) complaint proffered by the customer, Wright's Roofing, hereafter "the company" did not install a new roof on the customer's home. The company advised the customer that his roof was improperly installed, and that the warranty was voided upon the improper installation. The company further advised that the shingles were in a poor state of repair, and that the customer should replace the entire roof. The customer declined to follow the advice of the company, and instead, elected to patch the roof. The company completed the patch and the flashing in a proper workman like manner.

Thereafter, the customer called the company and complained of continued leaks. A company representative visited the worksite and entered the attack to inspect for leaks beneath the repair. The area beneath the repair was dry, with only signs of the previous leak. The representative went onto the roof and discovered a very small (less than 2/8th of an inch) bead of caulk that required an additional application due to shrinkage from drying, which is not uncommon. The customer however refused to allow the representative to apply the necessary caulk on this second visit. Therefore, the customer's claim of a second attempt to repair the leak is not completely accurate.

The company has declined to oblige the customer's request for a refund because the work performed was completed in a workman like manor, including the flashing. The customer denied the company further access to apply a small bead of caulk to the one small area noted above with shrinkage, responding instead with demands for a refund. On November 16, 2018, the company mailed the attached letter as a good faith effort to satisfy the customer, but the customer has responded with this Revdex.com complaint.

Wright's Roofing has been in business since 2001 our founder has more than 30 years of experience in the roofing industry. We are committed to customer satisfaction, and it is our sincere desire that each and every customer is provided with the very best service our industry has to offer. We regret that our customer is unhappy with the service we've provided, but again, we stand ready willing and able to reapply the small bead of caulk if the customer will please allow us to do so.

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
*** stated in his response to Revdex.com that his company did not install a new roof on my home, implying that he only patched the existing roof. The truth is that he removed the existing shingles on the backside of my home, (apx. 20' wide X 40' long) and replaced the existing shingles with new shingles. That is considered a replacement, not a patch. I have an invoice from *** dated Jan 15, 2018 where he states that his company removed and installed 30yr. architectural shingles. That is a roof replacement, not a patch. Contrary to what *** states, he never advised me to replace the entire roof as he has stated in his Revdex.com response. I have pictures after the new shingles were installed that there are now 3 active leaks. Before he replaced my roof, there was only 1 leak. That one leak was why I hired him to replace, not patch, the backside of my house. He also replaced the flashing around the chimney with flashing that was only half the height of the previous flashing and the new flashing was not countered into the brick like the previous flashing. So, that new flashing also leaks. He has attempted to patch the new roof on 2 different occasions with no success. HIs web site, wrightsroofingandcontracting.com states "Roofing done right-the first time!" That was one of the reasons why I hired him. I have more leaks now than when he first replaced my old roofing shingles. I have had to hire another roofing company to replace the roof that I previously hired *** to replace just 11 months ago. That is why I have asked him for a partial refund. I paid him $4250 in January 2018 to and now I am only asking him to refund $4000. I should have demanded a full refund. *** further stated in his letter dated Nov 16, 2018 that all of the shingles and flashing have been installed properly and in a quality, workman like manner. I would question how he could say that when he has attempted to patch my new roof 2 times since January 2018.

Wright's Roofing & Contracting Service Response • Dec 27, 2018

The company recommended replacing the complete roof because it was improperly installed to begin with, and it was aged. We mentioned that several times to customer before patch was done. That's the way to do it the right way, the first time. But the customer said he didn't want to put that kind of money into it. While on the roof, and before the patch was done, the customer pointed out other leaks at other places on the roof, other than the area the company patched.
The company did not patch those other areas because the customer picked the area he wanted us to patch. We patched the area the customer asked us to patch to satisfy the customer's instructions, since the company and the customer had a prior working relationship. In a situation where an installer merely patches a roof, this means that new shingles must be connected to the old roofing materials. Water can
enter the old roofing material and run beneath the old shingles and even beneath new shingles, then exit the first seam in the roof's decking, or some other place the water finds to exit. However and again, the company advised the customer to install a completely new roof, but the customer declined. The company only warrants the installation of a completely new full roof installation, which this was not.
Despite this, we have attempted to work with the customer, but the customer became belligerent and would not allow us further access. As to the photograph provided by the customer, the company offered to remove that soffit board in the photo, so that we would see precisely where the water was coming from. The customer refused. Once the water hits a flat area such as soffit, it will spread until it finds somewhere to leak threw, which will have an inexperienced person thinking the leak is coming from a totally different area. A leak does not always drip in directly under where it leaks in from roof. It can run down in between shingles and felt. It can go side to side, I tried to explain this to him and he refuses to at least consider it. I have looked at thousands of leaks in the 32yrs experience I have in the roofing business, but he refused my opinion on what could be the problem which we find confusing. We pride ourselves in making customers happy, but in this instance, we have been denied that opportunity.
