This company issues gift certificates that are only valid for one year rather than the five years required by federal law.
We received a $150 gift certificate on Aug 11, 2018. Due to personal issues were were unable to redeem it until Aug 2, 2020. Upon attempting to redeem the gift certificate we were informed that it had expired on Aug 20, 2019.
It is my understanding that based on federal law (i.e., Credit CARD Act of 2009; 15 U.S.C. § 1693l-1), gift card and gift certificates must have a minimum of 5 years validity. I have attached the gift certificate received.
I contacted the company to ask that the gift certificate be accepted regardless of the printed expiration date and was denied. Even after communicating the aforementioned validity due to federal law.
We were looking forward to participating in a cooking class with the gift certificate. We attempted to use the gift certificate and were denied. Even after the denial, we asked if the gift certificate could be honored and were rejected. After such a rejection we feel we would be unwelcome participating in the class (instructed by the very person that rejected us). We are no longer interested in participating in classes from this individual. As such we are seeking a full refund for the gift certificate ($150).
