This StateFarm Insurance Agency drops the ballreally bad!
I have been a customer with StateFarm for three years (same time that I have been living in the US)
In November 2015, I was notified by a member of this Insurance Agency that there was a problem with our cars (wife's and mine) insurance and that the policies would not be extended in January because my wife's international driver’s license did not suffice and did not comply with the requisites for insurance I was also told that I would receive a formal notice on the mail and that I was being called to me to let me know in advance, which I appreciated
After hearing the news, we went to the DMV right away to start my wife’s license process, which was not easy due to our immigration status, i.ethe DMV requested more than the usual documentation (updated letter from Social Security stating that my wife is not eligible for a SSN, etc...) however, after a couple of visits to the DMV, she was able to take and pass the knowledge test, which allowed her to get a learners permit and to schedule the next driving test available, which is for mid-FebruaryDuring all this process, I constantly communicated the progress to my insurance agency and provided the appropriate documentation (copies of every communication, learner's permit and the proof of the actual appointment for mid-February)After reviewing all the documentation, the Insurance agent informed me that StateFarm had accepted to grant an extension to my policies after all and therefore the cancellation notices that I got in the mail should be disregarded… which was great news, we really felt relievedFinally, the agent also requested me to provide a copy of my wife’s driver’s license once obtained in mid-February
Sadly (or "shockingly", I should say...), on January 5th, I received a call from the member of the Insurance Agency and was informed that my policies were indeed cancelled on January 2ndI was really perplexed by this phone call - Aren't Insurance agents supposed to be professionals? Aren't they supposed to be trained to care about their customers and to provide the best guidance? Aren't they supposed to know of the consequences of cancelling a policy?
This cancellation could have really affected me and family in several levels: (i) I was put in a position where I could no longer comply with Delaware’s State Law and with my cars credit/lease contract, where having insurance at all times when driving a vehicle is required; (ii) I was put in financial risk for three days by not having insurance nor the knowledge that our cars no longer insured; (iii) I was put in a situation where I had to react in a rush and look for another insurance provider without time to compare and do appropriate planning
I really understand the underwriting policies of a company, but what I don’t understand is the lack of professionalism that takes to handle a simple renewal in such a poor mannerI was lucky that nothing happened while I was not insured, but what if it did?! - That’s something that you can’t help to think as a parent and a conscious individualIt has really been a very unpleasant and stressful experience and I hope it doesn't happen to you too
