Review: I went to the store in order to have a battery replaced in my Omega watch. It had run perfectly for some time and just the night before, the battery died. I gave it to the owner, he took into the back, and brought it out saying it would not work. Also, the watch's back cover had been taken off and it would not go back on the watch. The watch is a very valuable watch and it is now ruined. If the jeweler did not know how to work on this watch and to change the battery without breaking the watch, he should not have attempted to do the task.Desired Settlement: I feel the owner is responsible for either a satisfactory repair of my watch (with a reputable Omega watch repair firm) or replacement of the watch.

Business

Response:

The consumer brought her watch in to have the battery replaced. When the jeweler tried to open the back of the watch, he found it had been glued on -- that's why he had trouble getting it off. After he got the battery out, it was tested and determined to be OK. The battery was brought out to the consumer and shown on the voltage meter that the battery was still working and there must be something else wrong with the watch. Consumer stated if there was something other than the battery she would take it to her "regular" jeweler. The watch was taken to the work desk to replace the back. Jeweler said it would not stay on because there was no latch, and that must have been the reason it was glued on previously. Consumer was asked if the back had ever been taken off to have work done and she said no it had not, but later she stated her "regular" jeweler never had trouble with the back and had taken it off "millions of times". Mr. [redacted] stated they are not responsible for the watch and the consumer should take it back to her "regular" jeweler.

Response:

I have reviewed the response offer made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

This is not an accurate representation of what occurred. Yes, the jeweler took the watch to the back to replace the battery. He was in the back for a very long time. Finally, he brought the watch out to me in pieces, indicating that the watch was broken and that the problem was not the battery. He did not first come to the front to show me the voltage meter reading, and then go back to put the watch together. Rather, he only came out once, with the watch in pieces and saying that the battery was not the problem.

This watch was not broken when I took it in; the battery was dead and needed replacing. My regular jeweler has replaced the battery before and has never indicated a problem, and he certainly would have never glued the back onto the watch! He would have never done this.

I propose that I take my watch to my regular jeweler to determine if it can be fixed. If it can be, the repair and parts would be the responsibility of the jeweler who broke it. If it cannot be fixed, the jeweler who broke it is responsible for its replacement. This is a very fine watch which was in good working condition when I took it in to have the battery replaced. It is now in pieces.
