when I first called the YWCA of Hartford, CT I was extremely confident that I would no longer have to face homelessness again. I was sure that the YWCA would do all that they could to make sure I was self efficient before I left their grounds. however, I was shocked, disappointing and hurt once I finally arrived and learned that the YWCA does nothing but put a roof over your head for three months. once your time was up it's like "OK, get out and find your way. You cant come back here for six months, though. GOOD LUCK!!' there are no employment services or assistance. no advocacy, nothing. I couldn't even get a bus pass to get to and from work, once I did find a job (on my own), for at least the first two weeks. I couldn't even get printer paper to print out my homework ( I go to school online). there are two parts to this building, one being the homeless shelter and one being the residence. it seems like if you are not a "resident" you are irrelevant. if you are not paying rent you are not important. shelter residents aren't even allowed to join the other residents when they have cook-outs or other events. we are reminded that we are part of the HOMELESS shelter and we are not equal to the residents that pays rent. but like I said they do nothing to assure that we would not be this way for long. I literally had to threaten the property manager and program director that I would take matters into my own hands and to the mayor. I had my letter ready. then less than two weeks later, all of the sudden, funds fell out of the sky and they were able to start a rapid rehousing program only for shelter floor residents. although I am grateful I feel that I shouldn't have had to go to those extents for results. this is something that should have been in place. something that they should have been wanting to do. on the front of the building there is a big sign with orange letters that reads EMPOWERING WOMAN AND ELIMINATING RACISM. I don't feel empowered at all. I actually felt pretty helpless and alone. I live at the YWCA but have to go elsewhere for help and assistance and that's not right. this business was never like this. my mother lived here almost twenty years ago (before new management) and I used to love it. since the day she left my mother has never had to deal with homelessness or anything of that nature and the YWCA made sure of it. it seems like the vision is lost. as there is new management and different agendas. the YWCA of Hartford CT went from actually being about empowering woman and eliminating racism to being about profits, as I said before if we are not paying rent we are not important. if all you need is a place to stay for a little while then great go to the Y. but that is all you would get. sorry for the long sob story, but this is truly how I feel. and trust me I can go on and on and on about this very unethical business.
