On February of 2016, [redacted], brought his 2004 Hyundai Tiburon 2.7 to AZ Auto Repair to replace valve lifters. l worked on this vehicle personally.  This vehicle was recently purchased by the customer when it came into my shop. The vehicle arrived on a tow truck with the valve...

covers removed, timing belt not installed as if someone had been working on it prior to coming to the shop. [redacted] stated that he attempted to fix the issue himself but was not able to. He also stated that the lifters in the engine were making a noise and he was told that by cleaning the lifters it would resolve the noise. I told him that I had never heard of that before.  [redacted] informed me that the front lifters were cleaned by him and that he purchased the back lifters.  [redacted] instructed me to change the back lifters with the parts he brought in.  The agreed price for the labor was $300 which is not the normal cost of labor and at the same time informed him that because he brought his own parts that the parts would not be covered under labor warranty.  Once the job was completed the noise reduced in the back but the front was still making noise. I advised to change the front lifters and to also change the spark plugs and spark plug wires because as the vehicle was being worked on I notice damage to the wires.  [redacted] picked up the car and said he would take care of it. The car was brought back the next day. He informed me that he was going to order the front lifters and left his vehicle there for approximately 2 weeks. Once he finally brought the parts, [redacted] asked how long it would take to complete the job. He was told that we were very busy with other jobs but I would try to have it done by the end of the week. noticed that the manufacture looked different from the first ones.  I spoke to [redacted] and asked him where he was purchasing his parts from?  [redacted] stated he was purchasing the parts online. At that moment I told him that buying parts from the internet is not a good idea because there is no guarantee that those parts are in good condition. I told him that in the past AZ Auto Repair had purchased parts online and there were too many issues. [redacted] was told that it is best to get parts from the dealership or a local part store because they offer warranty on their parts. It was also explained to [redacted] that when AZ Auto Repair purchases the parts the work is under warranty.  I went ahead and changed the lifters but the noise continued. In an effort to try get rid of the noise, I did a free oil change thinking that this might help. At the same time, I checked the oil pressure, cylinder compression and cylinder leak down test, just to make sure it didn't have an under lining problem that was not diagnosed before.  When that job was completed [redacted] was contacted and told that the car continued with the noise and repeated to him that it is best to buy parts from the dealership or a local store, not to buy parts off the internet anymore.  I also asked the [redacted] pay $150 for the labor for this job because everything was re-done to change a different part in the engine. [redacted] refused to pay because he said he did not receive the car on time even though it was made clear to [redacted] that we were extremely busy. To avoid issues and help [redacted] I let him take the car for free of charge. Approximately a month later, I happened to run into [redacted] and asked him how the car was doing and if he ever got the new parts. It was at that point when he told me that the car was parked at home because the engine was no longer working. I offered to take a look at the vehicle and [redacted] said he would let me know. Sometime later [redacted] called me to discuss the engine problem. I advised him to replace the engine instead of buying parts to try to repair it. Although, AZ Auto Repair had no responsibility to do so, I offered to find an engine for him locally with warranty and do the work for half the normal labor rate if and only the job was done by our shop and it if the engine was purchased by us so that we could warranty our labor. [redacted] said he would let me know. After that [redacted] called me asking for half the money for an engine that [redacted] found for $900. The response was no because AZ Auto Repair have no warranty for labor when customers provide the parts. AZ Auto Repair has 20 years of experience and I am completely sure that everything was put back correctly before handing the car over to [redacted]. Throughout the course of all the interaction with [redacted] AZ Auto Repair has made several attempts in helping him out in any way possible even without having an obligation to do so. Our policy at AZ Auto Repair is that we are responsible and honor all warranties on labor only when parts are purchased by our shop. We may waive fees or offer discounts on labor depending on the situation. AZ Auto Repair also has a $15 a day charge for any parked vehicles left in the shop by the owner when it is not being worked on. The fee was waived for [redacted] when he left his car in the shop for almost two weeks. AZ Auto Repair does not feel that we are responsible for anything that happened to [redacted]'s vehicle when he has made it clear that different people have been giving him opinions on the vehicle and we have no way to prove that the car was worked on by other people also at any given point.

To whom it may concern: Regarding [redacted]'s answer,it's not possible that the timing marks in the camshafts were wrong. My 20 years of experience working with different types of cars plus the guidance of a specialized program which shows exactly how to install the timing marks in the timing belt proves it. The program specifies the torque specification in every bolt and every part and it's what we use in my shop. See attachment. Those engines are very sensitive and if something was off it would have had poor acceleration. In addition, once the car was completed we used a scanner to do a final diagnosis and it had no check engine light or other codes in the memory of the computer. The vehicle was tested on the freeway before letting the customer take it;the only issue present was that it still had the lifters noise which he was aware of. If something was off he would not have taken the car;further more if the engine stopped working the same day that he took it why did he not called me to let me know what had happened? I saw him at the store about a month later and I was the one that asked him how the car was running. He told me that the car had broken down and the car was parked at home because the engine was no longer' working. I offered him take the vehicle to my shop so I can check it and [redacted] said he would let me know later. At that point he never mentioned that the car broke down the same day that he took it. After some time he stop at the shop and to see what he could do;even though AZ Auto Repair had no responsibility to do so, I offered to find an engine for him locally with warranty and do the work for half the normal labor rate if and only the job was done by our shop and if the engine was purchased by us so that we could warranty our labor.

Most of the events portrayed by this business are correct, but there are some deficiencies. I was never told that by me providing the replacement parts any and all warranties would be voided. If I would have been told that, I would not have provided the parts myself. Secondly, I was advised by the owner to do the oil change myself to see if it would help the issue, the business did not do the oil change. I was also never told about having to pay $150 for any extra labor, only about a $50 fee for changing the gaskets which the owner himself waived because the work was not done in a timely manner. I am great full of the few extra things they have done to try to help but unfortunately that does not fix the fact that the work done by them lead to the inoperability of the engine. The same day the vehicle was driven out of the shop was the day the timing belt snapped off the pulleys. Once the attempt of reinstalling the timing belt back on we realized that it was not possible because the camshaft that connected to the pulley was not aligned, it was pointing downwards indicating that something on that side of the engine was either not timed correctly or not torqued correctly. That is the reason why it is the responsibility of the business to pay for the replacement of the engine. Other than attempting to reinstall the timing belt, the engine has not been tampered with.
