 Complaint: [redacted]
I am rejecting this response because: Fred made it clear, up front, that my insurance company paid for the roof. Not sure why this matters.  I contracted for a slate roof and I expect the same quality and workmanship regardless of whom is paying. Fred is correct in that I did contract with them to install a new roof.  They were not contracted to re-use existing flashing, which is what they did.  Only after I pointed this out did they add new flashing.  I say "add" because I am not sure if the old flashing was removed or simply covered over by new flashing. I admit that I know little about slate roofing.  However, upon my own personal inspection of their work, I noted gaps in caulking (or no caulking at all) and 1" gaps at the seams above the dormer windows.  To borrow Fred's words, I believe "any slate specialist" would know that this is not acceptable.  Where was the workmanship and taking pride in a job well done? Had I not climbed a two-story ladder myself, I would not have been aware of this.  What else is there that I am not aware of?  ·         Fred did come onsite to correct these issues.  Then again, why was the work not performed correctly in the first place?  Worse yet, why did the customer have to point this out? ·         Fred indicates that slates are fragile.  I agree.  Fred was contracted to install a ridge vent.  When the vent was installed I had questions as to whether it was installed correctly.  I contacted the manufacturer of the ridge vent regarding installation and relayed the same installation information to Fred.  This caused a second visit to the ridge vent, which runs the length of the main roof; climbing on the new - fragile - slate roof, removing existing slates, adding a waterproof membrane and relaying the existing slates a second time.  (Per the manufacturer, the ridge vent material is not to be exposed to the elements.)  Both installations they used butt joints - not the manufacturer's recommended overlap, which is typical with slate roofs.  In fact, some of these butt joints have obvious gaps between them.  Over time I can expect the waterproof membrane to fail and cause premature deterioration of the ridge vent material.                     ·         Has this additional roof access and subsequent re-work caused the failures that I am now witnessing? ·         Fred is incorrect about me knowing of their vacation.  I was not aware, otherwise I would not have tried to contact them during that time frame.  All I knew is that they wanted to complete my job because they had a three month job lined up with a college.  Furthermore, their answering machine did not indicate that they were away nor did their email via an Out of Office message.Regards,

Regarding the above customer complaint.  We had installed a new roof on his home which his insurance had paid for due to hail damage.  This slate roof was installed properly.  When [redacted] contacted us in regards to the seams, we went and checked into the situation and made it...

right, right away. The slates that came out, we put those back in.  As any slate specialists would know, slates are delicate therefore when there is snow, ice, high winds etc, this is something that is not a workmanship issue this is mother nature which is out of our control. We have went a fixed the slates that he informed us of without question and without a charge to be a good company as we have the reputation of.   We can not however guarantee anything that mother nature does and have explained to him that we can not keep coming out to fix these slates each time we get high winds or heavy snow or anything else that occurs from weather.  Any slate company is going to have this same policy.  As far as not returning his emails and calls in June of 2015, I was on vacation which he knew when I did call him back right away when I returned to the office.  We are a small company with just myself in the office, therefore I am not always able to answer each and every call , but always return calls! With this being said, we do not feel that a refund will be given, due to the roof has been completed properly.  Thank you,Fred
