I had Craftsman Custom Design clean the heating ducts in my home on 12-9- They first visited the house to scope the work and gave me a quote They performed the work thoroughly (I was there) expending about hours with people to clean all the ducts I was shown video of the before and after and the actual cleaning They also taped the cold air returns Very professional and very careful to protect walls, ceilings, and all property from damage.They set a date and adhered to it and they stayed until all the work was completed They also cleaned my furnace for no extra charge I strongly recommend these above others and am willing to talk with prospective clients I also got the same quote from another company who does not tape the return duct work, does not provide photos or videos of the work, and who said they could do the same job in hours with people

Air duct cleaning is a real need: I'm the first homeowner for my 17-year-old house. Gradually, my wife and I experienced increasing symptoms of dust, such as "post-nasal drip" and sneezing. Other family members are even more sensitive, and when they visit, always experienced watery eyes & sneezing. I began to think it might be dust when I looked at the air in sunlight and saw lots of particles. But I was unsure, after all we keep a clean house, we have the house regularly cleaned and dusted, and I change my furnace air filters every 3 months, using the best filter I can find. Nevertheless, I became more convinced of dust in the ducts when I started sneezing next to a return vent recently.
Then I searched the Internet; I discovered that many people say that air duct cleaning is a scam & unnecessary, especially in a house as young as mine. I was genuinely confused by these ideas that seemed to contradict my sneezing. So I decided to perform a simple test: I removed the air ducts in the basement and carefully put my hand into the main supply ducts and slid my fingers around the bottoms. I was immediately convinced of the need for cleaning: a thick coating of very fine gray dust coated my fingers. Performing the same sort of test upstairs with the cold air returns on the floor, I saw even worse dust in these areas, and while sticking my head near these returns, I started sneezing repeatedly. I'm not sure why there is such divided opinion on the Internet, but I am convinced that dust in air ducts is real & needs cleaning.
At that point I decided to get several estimates. I contacted 5 contractors. The main question they asked was "how many total ducts, supply and return, do you have?" I have 27 ducts. Three contractors gave me an estimate over the phone, and 2 came to my house (Phil and his dad were one of the 2). The estimates were: $1015, $905, $780, $700, and $550. Phil's estimate was right in the middle: $780; the other contractor who came to the house was $1015. This was remarkable: 5 estimates that ranged by almost $500.
What about competence? I asked each contractor how they did their cleaning. The other 4 gave me very incomplete answers ("they stick a rotor brush up there") with little explanation, or did not seem to respond well to my questions (e.g., "what kind of brush?" "how do they get to the corners?" "how often do I need to clean my ducts?"). Phil spent the time to give me an Master's degree in air duct cleaning. He first drilled a hole in my return duct in my basement, stuck an optic fiber up there, and showed me the even heavier coating of dust, this time of a coarser variety than in the supply duct (returns are always dirtier than supply, because dust comes into them from the house and is filtered by the filter, but very fine dust still passes through). Phil gave me information to check on the Internet, and answered all my questions thoroughly. I learned there are 2 methods: rotor brush and "abatement technologies". One uses much more expensive equipment and does an excellent job; the other is less effective. He clearly knew his business and what he was talking about. None of the other contractors, sad to say, inspired this sense of confidence in me (a person who asks lots of questions and wants to understand).
After thinking about it a day, I called Phil. He came by and gave me a written estimate. We all had a friendly chat--these Z[redacted]'s are a happy, friendly sort. I instinctively trusted them.
Today, they came and cleaned the ducts. The process lasted about as long as they estimated, & they cleaned up everything afterwards. The ducts look great. My wife and I are sitting here & we notice the improvement in air quality. And not sneezing.

I had done multiple demo projects and DIY remodels, and by not properly controlling the dust and debris, it was sucked into my air system. This means I was breathing in dust, dirt, everything all the time. This is not what I want for me, nor my family. It is a very inexpensive alternative to respiratory issues down the road.
