PAULA @ CHRIS F'S GARAGE

Purchased rebuilt marine engine from eagle engine. it was installed by a certified tech. engine failed. they are not returning my purchase price.
The engine I purchased for $2474.00 + installation failed after only a few minutes. There was a mis understanding about the hrs that the boat ran with this rebuilt engine. the company located in Carol Stream IL would not travel 60 miles to inspect the engine but opted to pick the engine up and ship it to Missouri for testing. I asked for my money returned as they said this process would take weeks.they then blame the installer or me for the engines failure. The certified installer Pete L took two sets of photos clearly showing the problem. they claimed to never have problems with their engines and the installer was driving the boat when the failure occurred . I`ve owned boats for 42 yrs.and never experienced this.

I purchased this engine through *** . They entered my claim and credited my account . Eagle sent contradictory info to *** saying my claim was invalid. Much of Eagles info to visa did not even pertain to my type engine. *** then debited my account for the engine cost. Peter L of Georges Boathouse Silver Lake Wi is in the process of refuting the claim Eagle made to *** .He can further confirm this situation. His phone is 847 980 4750. I will be happy to further discuss at your earliest convenience. they are now holding the engine for ransom in Missouri; wanting me to pay for any freight involved with this engine.

Desired Outcome

Release the *** claim. There is`nt any way that I would do any business with them again. I would like to comment that I had contacted for some legal help. Was told that these situation can get expensive. I am 70 yrs old and don`t need.additional aggravation of this type. I am not sure the last time in October that Peter L contacted them . E mails can be provided if required.

I have attached the warranty inspection report for Mr. claim along with photos.
Mr. contradicts what the Installer told our warranty dept that the engine had 4 + hours of run time and he claims only minutes, as the pictures show this engine ran for much longer than just minutes. The result of this failure is NOT a manufacturing issue and is therefore not covered by our warranty See Full report

WARRANTY INSPECTION REPORT

DATE: 10-2-2018 CLAIM NO: ***

ENGINE PART NO: *** ENGINE I.D ***

Customer Name:*** ( *** )

_______________________________________________________________________________

REPORTED SYMPTOMS: Was running on a small lake 2200 to 3300 rpm heard clunking noise, found hole in bottom of pan. We had the customer pull exhaust manifolds and risers to see if water ingested, no water in exhaust ports.

Send engine in for analysis

EXTERNAL VISUAL INSPECTION:
Tag on side of block. engine is clean in appearance and was not disassembled prior to receiving.

TEAR DOWN ANALYSIS: Root cause analysis revealed catastrophic piston and cylinder failure of #1 cylinder. Found #1 piston fragments received back in a oil filter box to be damage to the point there was no indication of cause of piston failure itself. Found #1 connecting rod to be bent/twisted this type of connecting rod failure is a indication of hydraulic issue/excessive combustion/pre-ignition/detonation. Connecting rod bearing was found to not have sustained failure or contributed to failure mode. Cylinder was found to have complete outer cylinder wall broken out into water cavity. Cylinder head audit revealed #1 exhaust and intake valves to have been damaged from catastrophic failure of #1 cylinder, found #5 intake valve to be tulip/cupping due to pre-ignition/detonation. Known causes; ignition timing, lean air fuel mixture, incorrect fuel used (see attached pictures).

ANALYSIS SUMMARY:
Suspect Pre-ignition/detonation, Known causes; ignition timing, lean air fuel mixture, incorrect fuel used (see attached pictures).

Non-Manufactures Defect.

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
There was an honest mistake in the reporting the number of hours that this motor was running. I ran this boat and along with the installer ran this engine for approx. a half hour.

There warranty for this engine is basically a non warranty. They did not come out and jointly inspect the engine with the installer and my self . the forced us to send the engine to Missouri. At that point they decided that the engine failure was the installers fault. we could say or show whatever they wanted. We had no recourse and now the engine was held hostage at there facility with my having to pay the freight for engine return. $2474.00 is a lot of money but to fight in court would end up being a lot more.
So here I am today :lost use of the boat for the season ;bought and installed an engine that had a failure well within the one year warranty . they really don`t offer a warranty.
At no time was Eagle engine in least sympathetic to the problem. From first mention it was not their problem. I have to get another engine won`t be from them. Don`t know how they remain in business.

To clarify Mr. comments, He now claims the engine only ran a 1/2 hour not for 4 hours as told to us by the mechanic that was working on it. However, a 1/2 hour is sufficient time for a cylinder to get hot enough to tulip a valve,as the autopsy report and photos show. We did not blame the installer , but the result of the analysis shows extreme operating temperatures and severe overheating which is not covered under our warranty.
A normal combustion process operating temperature in the combustion chamber could be considered
2500° F with cylinder pressures between 900-1200 psi. Engine valves will only survive the normal
temperatures because they are seated during the combustion process and transfer heat as designed to through
the head casting.
An abnormal combustion process may increase the operating temperature in the combustion chamber
as high as 5000° F with pressures between 3,500 - 5,000 psi. If this "tulip" condition occurs after
rebuilding of the engine or reconditioning of the cylinder head, the original problem has not been
fixed. This condition may affect one or more valves at a time.Items to check: properly working EGR system, correct ignition timing, ECU operation, vacuum leaks
(intake manifold, hoses, etc.), correct air to fuel mixture.
We are not holding the engine hostage, we spoke to Mr *** and the shop and informed them they would need to pay shipping charges to get it back since it was not a manufacturing defect. They were also informed of that prior to sending in for analysis.

Subject: Re: Revdex.com Complaint Case# ***

Thank you for addressing my complaint against Eagle Engine Sales.
I would like my rebuttal to remain on their record. I don`t have the resources to fight this any further.
Hope others see this and act accordingly.
I hope they get their due. At no time were they at least sympathetic to the problem . Taking no blame whatsoever . Moving the engine to where they made financially impossible for me to dispute. Shame on them!!
Thank you again for your help.
Sincerely

Purchased an Engine for my Truck. Barely made it 4000 miles, company refused to honor warranty.
I purchased an engine for my Ford ranger from these guys on November 30, 2016 and paid them $2,099 which came with a warranty. At around 4,000 miles after installation the engine started knocking. I immediately contacted the company to file a claim and get the engine covered. It really felt like these guys didn't care at all once they got paid. They told me that they would not warranty the engine because it was User error on my part even though I paid to have the engine installed by a professional, got the oil changed 500 miles after installation and followed everything in their handbook. For a new engine that I paid over $2000 for I would expect it to last longer than 4,000 miles.

On top of already being in a hole for the initial cost of the engine and installation, the company also requested that we take pictures of the spark plugs, perform wet/dry compression tests and take pictures of the heat tabs (All work that required extra payment) After this they requested that we remove the head of the engine (very expensive job) Keep in mind they expected me to pay out of pocket for this myself.

This companies business ethic was disgusting. Why offer a warranty if you don't plan on honoring it? Everyone I talked to over the phone at the company was dismissive and told me it was my fault. No respect for a high paying customer and I would not recommend this business to anyone.

Desired Outcome

I would like for Eagle Engines to honor the warranty on this engine and pay in full to have it replaced. I have spent over $4,000 jumping through all the hoops that they put before me and even after this they refused to honor the warranty. It did not even last 4,000 miles before it started knocking...

Eagle Engine Sales Response

In response to the complaint by Mr., he did indeed purchase an engine from us on November 09, 2016 and did call in to our warranty department on an alleged problem on 4-6-17. As with any warranty concern there are procedures we follow which are stated in the warranty manual that was provided to him with the engine.
Our warranty department when contacted regarding an issue provides a warranty claim number to reference throughout the procedure, in this case the claim # that was established was *** (I have supplied you with the detailed notes on every conversation that has taken place in regard to this claim (exhibit 1). As Mr. states the warranty department does require tests to determine if the problem is a manufacturing defect in either parts or workmanship or an installation or non-part provided failure. The shop working on the engine did provide all the information that was requested along with photos of the inside of the engine cylinders. The photos did show foreign debris inside the cylinders along with scuffing of the cylinder walls, an indication of foreign debris circulating through the oiling system. (pictures Exhibit # 2) After reviewing the photos, the warranty department offered the option of removing the cylinder head and we would send out a warranty inspector to examine the findings of the foreign material, or send the engine in for a plant inspection do to the findings in the photos. The warranty department made 2 attempts to contact a Tom who was working on the engine, the 1st attempt on 5-15 at 4:15pm with no call back and again on 5-17 with the same result.
Mr. states in his complaint "Why offer a warranty if you don't plan on honoring it "we never said we weren't honoring anything, both options are still on the table, and have been since the last conversations in May, however no one has contacted us on what they want to do. As a Remanufacturer we reserve the right to determine if an alleged problem is a failure in manufacturing materials or workmanship or was caused by an outside issue.

Please let me know what else we can do to help get this resolved.

Sincerely,
John E- Vice President of Sales

Customer Response

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
I appreciate the company taking the time to respond to this matter. As they stated, the last communication I had with Eagle Engines was that they told me I had to remove the cylinder head and then they would send an inspector out to review. The reason I couldn't move forward with this is because I literally ran out of money and couldn't afford to have the cylinder head removed. As far as I understood them from when I called over the phone, removing the cylinder head would be on my dime just as everything else so far has. The cost of ordering the engine, having it professionally installed and then paying for the compression tests and internal pictures left me with not enough to have the cylinder head removed and still cover my living expenses. I had to make a tough decision, I am a college student so I have to penny pinch unfortunately.

The second problem is that they reached out to the wrong mechanic. Tom indeed was the one who installed the engine initially but since having it installed back in Cameron Park CA, I took the truck with me up to Utah where I go to College where it was meant to be my main source of transportation. The mechanics they should have reached out to are Provo Car Doctors. These are the guys who opened the claim #*** and performed the compression tests and took the pictures and have been in communication with Eagle Engines. I can provide contact information if needed. As is I still have the truck but it has been sitting in my parking stall unused for months. Luckily my roomates who attend the same university as me are kind enough to give me rides but I would obviously still love to have my truck running. As I haven't been driving for the last couple months I have been able to save a bit. I would still like to move forward with the warranty and I still firmly feel that Eagle Engines should cover the repair costs in full. The $4000+ i've put into the truck so far essentially left me broke, and if I have to pay to have the cylinder head removed on my dime without a 100% guarantee of a warranty it is going to put me in the same tough situation again.

Thanks.
