Penn Foster Career School Reviews (170)

Review: I enrolled in an online medical coding course with Penn Foster in the fall of '13. Things were going along fine with the program until I completed an exam on Saturday, March 14th. This needed to be submitted by downloading to an instructor. The program did not allow me to continue until this final exam was corrected. It took three weeks for anyone to even look at this exam and then despite it being graded, I am still not able to continue with the program. I took three months off work to complete this program and I have not been able to do anything to work towards this completion for almost a month now. This prolongs my ability to search for employment in this field for a month. I have contacted them three times already and have not gotten any satisfaction yet.Desired Settlement: I am asking Penn Foster to reduce the remainder of tuition owed to offset the amount of time that I have not been able to work towards the completion of the course. My goal was to be completed by March 31st and as of today I still do not have access.

To Whom It May Concern:

I welcome the opportunity to address **. [redacted]’s concerns. **. [redacted] enrolled in our Medical Coding and Billing Career Diploma Program on February 11, 2014 by submitting a down payment and a signed enrollment agreement.

Our policy states to allow at least five business days to have a project graded. Our records indicate we received **. [redacted]’s last project on March 22, 2014 and it was graded on April 3, 2014 which was nine days after it was submitted. At this time, our instructors are experience a large amount of projects submitted in which they are doing their best to have them accurately graded within five days. I apologize for any delay this has caused **. [redacted].

Students completing more than fifty percent of their exams owe the full tuition balance, which is stated on **. [redacted]’s signed enrollment agreement. **. [redacted] completed sixty-eight percent of her exams; therefore, she owes the full tuition balance. In addition, **. [redacted] was previously enrolled in a similar course in which we were able to transfer grades and a monetary adjustment which reduced her tuition by $334.00.

**. [redacted] already received a discount of $334.00 and we are unable to discount her program any further. However, as a courtesy, if **. [redacted] can pay in full in the amount of $309.40, she will receive a discount of $89.60. **. [redacted] needs to pay $309.40 before April 29, 2014 to receive this offer. She can contact Student Care Monday through Friday 9am-7pm EST at ###-###-#### to make the payment.

Penn Foster is devoted to the educational advancement and satisfaction of all our students. If you have any further questions, please contact me at ###-###-####.

I am rejecting this response because:

Review: Yes, my complaint is in regards for being charged for something that I never signed up for and it's been a few years now. I never once enroll with this online school. I just pulled my credit report and now it's showing not only a collection account but a TAX LIEN!!! I will be writing the school personally or my attorney will be sending a letter out to this place of business if they do not correct this issue. How can I be charged a " student loan " if I was never a student? Also, I've never received a bill about these charges and I certainly did not get any type of letter about a tax lien.Desired Settlement: I would like for this to be removed from my credit and Lien as well ASAP!!!

Review: I contacted Penn Foster back in November and explained to them that I wanted to cancel the program I was enrolled in. I had paid up to what materials I had already received and that I owed 2.50 to cancel which I paid. Well then they claimed I owed an additional 49.00 and then continued to add late fees and make harassing phone calls stating that I now owe $110.00 for something I do not want in the first place. I want this program cancelled and I do not feel it is fair that I have to pay them for something that I never received.Desired Settlement: I want them to close the account and zero out the balance.

Review: Penn Foster did not fully disclose information regarding transfer credit. I was eligible for transfer credit for the first semester of the Criminal Justice Program. If my transcript had been evaluated fairly, I would have been able to opt out of the first semester. Neither the contract nor the website clearly specified that transfer credit could not be applied toward the first semester.

Penn Foster would not evaluate my transcripts until after I enrolled. Once I enrolled, I was assigned a student number. I became ill and tried to withdraw from the program. But Penn Foster informed me that I was liable for the full tuition.

Prior to enrolling in the Criminal Justice Program, I graduated from Penn Foster's Medical Transcription Program. My tuition balance was paid in full. The curriculum for the Medical Transcription Program and the Medical Billing and Coding Program are the same except for Course 9 and 10 (Medical Coding 1 and 2). Both programs have the same course numbers, course descriptions and grading system. However, the Transcript Evaluator required that I complete a majority of the courses over. I heard her say that she was not going to allow me to complete just two courses and graduate. Because of the financial hold on my account for the Criminal Justice Program, my enrollment was cancelled for the Medical Billing and Coding Program.

With transfer credit and discounts (referral codes), my tuition for the Medical Billing and Coding Program would have been approximately $250. My tentative graduation date would have been December 2014.Desired Settlement: I am asking that Penn Foster void the contract for the Criminal Justice Program and remove the financial hold from my account.

Review: Good Day Sir or Madam,

I never used this institution for my educational services. I contacted this institution and attempted to cancel my enrollment with the program in December of 2013, and had no luck after

speaking with a rude customer service representative who told me I couldn’t back out of the program after I had requested to cancel. I then received a collections notice from [redacted] for

$1,304.00 and I contacted the collection agency and told them I would be contacting the institution to resolve the matter. The Supervisor of [redacted] told me that if I were to contact them, they would send me right back to the collection agency. I never attended any classes, nor took any of their time. I received an email from the school today 6/20/14, telling me to contact the collection agency. Contacting the collection agency doesn't give me any answers, as I have tried that and they tell me my only option is to pay. I can’t even get an explanation on the account, and I feel like this is an unethical business practice and it isn't very nice. I told them I would be happy to pay the enrollment fee. The collections company said they could settle lower on the debt because they cannot validate the debt.

I would be happy to pay for the enrollment fee(s) in which I used their time for my enrollment, but I don’t feel like $1,304.00 is justifiable.

Thank you,

[redacted]Desired Settlement: I would be happy to pay the enrollment fee(s) but not the whole balance.

Review: Hi,

My name's [redacted]. I moved in with my sister in 2007 & she contacted Penn Foster in attempt to help me get my high diploma. She filled out their online application, & I never did go through with their program. I never even signed in to utilize their online program. I have contacted them numerous times to request that they cancel my enrolled because I didn't want to use their service. Penn Foster claims that they sent me books & that I owed them $1,120.00 & refusses to cancel my order & continues to send me collection letters. They even claim that I have manually signed a contract in which I have NOT nor has my sister. After researching Penn Foster, I found many complaints just like my situation from others. Please help!

kind regards,

[redacted]Desired Settlement: To get this debt off my credit report & to stop harrassing me for something I never used or received.

Review: originally I called in december 20th to join penn foster. I never signed anything or agreed to any ter** of a contract because I was never sent one nor read one. that same day I decided to cancel so I did. They said I would receive a refund in 3 days. Well I didn't. So I called back in on the 30th of december to see where my refund was and got roped back in. At that time again nothing was disclosed to me about the contract or ter** NOTHING. well the woman apparently reopened my old account that I had canceled. I then received a message on the student portal message board in my account telling me I had to have exa** done by a certain date yet this is work at your own pace. Well I hurried up and got them done. I since have found that the American Bar Association does not accept their diploma's. So I called to switch my degree to something else. Well im told I cannot do that without paying $577 today on the phone to continue because of a liability. Excuse me? I told them I wasnt looking to cancel just switch my degree. They told me no because I completed to many test that I am unable to transfer to another course. However if I pay $577 today they will happily switch me. RIP OFF. I have no contract, I did not sign anything. This place is a scam and a bunch of crooks. I do not want this on my credit report. I also canceled my account today because they would not let me switch or add the cost on to the new tuition.Desired Settlement: I want the account closed with a zero balance. I should not be responsible for $577 just to switch a degree.

As previously stated, credit card refunds take 10 business days to process and when **. [redacted] called on December 30, 2013 her refund had not been processed yet. When **. I am not accepting this offer. Nowhere on the test date list found in my message board said it was a guideline. It had a specific date so I followed what I saw on that paper. Not my fault maybe you should have specified it was a guideline. I am not accepting this offer.

Review: I looked into attending this school years ago. They sent me some basic information (information that could easily be found about this company, nothing custom-tailored towards myself), and asked me to do 2 basic reading and math tests, what they called 'placement testing'. I sent these back to them and asked about the payment plan they had. This is when I found out that the price I was originally quoted was for ONE 'semester' or term and not the entire program!!! I said absolutely not! I could not afford that at the time, and was completely mislead about the pricing and payment system! I immediately cancelled any and all mailings, communication and relationships I had with this place, and haven't heard from them since! Now, I am trying to get a mortgage and THIS is showing on my credit report that I owe $453 to this company! I DO NOT OWE THEM ANYTHING! I cancelled any and all dealings I had with this place PRIOR to having any services from them that would've cost anything, much less costing almost five hundred dollars!!! If there is any thing on file for me, other than those 2 'placement tests' or whatever they called them at the time, then it was not authorized or done by me! In addition to all this, I was attending a local university full time at this time that Penn Foster is showing I had this debt accumulate...now why would I be attending an accredited university AND go to this place that is nothing more than a mail-order college?!?Desired Settlement: I want this OFF my credit report and I want this OFF any record I may have because I do not owe this! Penn Foster needs to cancel this amount that is showing I owe, because clearly I do not!

Review: I'm currently enrolled in Penn Foster and since this is a correspondence school, "work at your own pace", that's what I have done since May 2012. I was under the impression that a course began when I started it (at my own pace). However, I received my Medical Terminology materials in January 2013 but I wasn't complete with the previous course and it states "please do not continue until you take this survey". I wasn't finished the Math course, nor the survey. I began the Medical Terminology course on March 19, 2013 and to my surprise the instructor had a message regarding discussion topics...stating that the "start date" is the date my materials were shipped to me (Jan. 24, 2013) and I noticed I had already missed 8 assignments. I tried emailing the professor, even though she stated "do not contact her until all assignments were submitted"...no response from her. I tried going through the system to back track the missed topics, but wasn't successful because a lot of students are submitting "make up work" and there's no order and the system doesn't go back to January 21st. Today, April 10th, I did a "live chat" with a rep and he ([redacted]) did not seem to understand me (Chat ID: [redacted]). I only want to know how can I obtain the topics of the missed assignments...that's all. I realize the work must be completed, I am willing to do it now since I'm scheduled to complete the course on May 15, 2013 (I'll have to pay more if I'm not done by that date). I ended the chat with [redacted] after informing him that he wasn't understanding my problem and proceeded to send another email to student services. I received a response back (via email) from [redacted], who still is telling me my start date (for this course) is the date the materials were shipped. I'm still not getting any assistance. I just want to find out what I missed....that's it and I feel as if I'm not getting any assistance. I'll do the work, just tell me what or where I can find the information on what is missed. I wasn't aware of any deadlines/start dates (except date of completion) with Penn Foster since they stated that since they're an "at your own pace" school (no traditional semester system, etc)...the reason I couldn't put my education down on my taxes this year. I'm frustrated and feel as if no one is understanding my request and that I'll end up owing more money to complete the Associates Program.Desired Settlement: I would like guidance...some type of assistance. All I asked for was help on finding the missed topics.

Review: Out of nowhere Penn Foster sent me an enrollment cancellation notice. I couldn't get into my account. I paid in full for my schooling at enrollment and was on schedule in all my classes and passing scores for around 6 months. They sent me the notice via email and then I couldn't log in. I called them 3x and notified them I couldn't get into my courses anymore and they told me I was still enrolled and there was nothing I could do about it, I even faxed them the cancellation notice they sent me and got no reply. I was hung up on several times as well. I also sent them the cancellation notice via attachment email and got no reply. After a few days of not being able to get into my classes and getting nowhere with the school. I contacted my bank for a refund. My bank only got me back $100 of the entire tuition that I had paid cash. They told me because it was longer than 6 mo since I enrolled that I couldn't get more back per the banks policy and told me I should contact a lawyer. I am furious. I even had sent my bank the copy of the email that was from Penn Foster to me saying that the enrollment agreement that I signed and detailed that my signature was cancelled. It details that PennFoster themselves cancelled my contract. They didn't give me a reason. I wish you had an option for me to post attachments on here because I would attach all the emails as proof.

Review: Penn Foster advertises that they are accredited. I enrolled in the program for wedding planner, only to find out that several desirable places will not accept this as an authentic accreditation. I have not ever even started my classes as of yet.

I called the first time, and explained that they falsely advertised the quality of their program, and the outcome from taking it, I explained that I hadn't started the classes, and I wished to get the full amount of money I had paid in refunded and have no more money withdrawn from my account. The woman told me she could cancel my enrollment, but it would cost me money to do so. I asked for a supervisor, none could speak to me.

I called right back. I spoke to a man, and recorded the call- as they also record the calls. The man offered to stop the charges, but could not give me my money back. I asked for a supervisor. He assured me one would call me back within 48 hours. None did. I waited two weeks.

Yesterday, I noticed that Penn Foster was still debiting money from my bank account. I called again, and recorded that call as well. I was told that the gentleman was walking the message over to the supervisor himself and someone would call me back within 15 minutes. No one did.Desired Settlement: I want all of my money back. I want the charges to stop, and I want them to change their advertising practices. Also, based on the fact that the supervisors seem to be dodging phone calls, I really think this company needs further investigation, and I will be calling the FTC if this is not addressed.

Penn Foster is a lousy school. Teachers grade exams from lessons they don't create and the tested material does not always match the lesson. Much of the content in courses is just filler; for example, I signed up for two courses and 2 of the modules in each course were exactly the same and they didn't have much to do with the overall subject. I am taking the Medical Coding and Billing course ( I cancelled the other) and right now, we are enjoying an entire module on 8th grade English grammar. The lower prices of this school do not lead to a quality or accredited education. Many of the expectations and delivery of course materials are not spelled out clearly. When you try to call this Corinne in administration about issues she is never at her desk.

Review: I signed my son up for the Penn Foster High School program back in 2005. I was ensured that the high school program was regionally accredited and there would be no proble** with colleges accepting the transcript. Well, my son has applied to college at [redacted] University and they will not accept his transcript. They said that they have turned away several people with Penn Foster High School diplomas due to the program not dividing their curriculum into semesters. [redacted] University is requiring my son to take his GED, which is a complete travesty since he is suppose to have a high school diploma. Many jobs have also stated that Penn Foster is not a school that is accepted by their agencies. I feel that my money was spent to provide my son with a diploma and if that diploma is not acceptable, then I want my money back. If the transcript cannot be changed to show completion in semesters, I demand my money back. The only reason we signed up for the program was to receive a high school diploma and to complete a home school program. This is unacceptable, discouraging to my son, and a bit misleading.Desired Settlement: I would like a refund of the total amount paid for the program since it is not regionally accredited and accepted by the university here in Arkansas.

Since starting this course, that promise has never been met, they have my exams graded in 3week ,some times a month.

Student are given a time frame to complete each semester and if a student fails to complete such course within that time frame , a fee is charged to have an extension .I believe they grading so that student be unable to complete their courses within that time frame ,hence pay for an extension. Review: [redacted], NY [redacted] To Whom It May Concern:On or about Nov 2012, I began studying Medical Billing and Coding with Penn Fosters Online Course. The cost of the course for 15 months was about $700.00, which I paid $44.00 monthly. Unfortunately, I had to move into another apartment in the interim of my studies and fell back. I tried numerous times to contact Penn Foster by landline and via portal to request an extension, to no avail. I was to receive a diploma after successfully completing the course. When I needed guidance, I never received any response to any of my questions. Considering the fact, that I taught myself thus far. I was literally paying for the materials Penn Foster mailed to me. I received no other service. At this point I did not need Penn Foster for any other reason then to continue to send me the books that I needed to prepare myself for a certificate that Penn Foster does not offer. The diploma they were offering was obselete at this point. My goal was to use the study materials they were sending to prepare myself to become certified in the field, in the hopes of future employment. When Penn Foster discontinued sending my study materials, I discontinued the monthly payments. I feel I dont owe Penn Foster any additional payments because I did not receive any other services from Penn Foster but the study materials. I spoke on this matter with a representative at Penn Foster. I informed her that if they continued to mail me the materials, I would continue to pay. She informed that she would comply, but the only mail I received was the bill of the remaining balance. This has went into collections and Im reachng out to the Revdex.com to investigate this matter to avoid this from damaging my Credit Report. Please help me resolve this matter at your earliest convenience. Please feel free to contact me at the above information. Thank you for your time.Desired Settlement: Considering, that the only service I received from Penn Foster was the learning materials, that they chose to discontinue, I think it's only fair that they forgive the balance of $495.60. This total includes the additional fees they added on for non-payment. Thank you.

Review: Received a collection letter (from [redacted] on behalf of Penn Foster) without any previous billings. The charges are not mine. Penn Foster would not explain how they got our name and address. Phone number and SSN did not match their records. They indicated 6 shipments of 19 books were sent to our address, which they were not. They explained in order to dispute the charges, we had to send in a copy of our driver's license and social security card, which should NEVER be required.Desired Settlement: Penn Foster needs to examine the account and figure out who opened it with what SSN, bill them, credit our record, and apologize for erroneous billing practices. The business needs to examine its billing/collection policies. It is unacceptable to obtain our names/address when we did not open the account. I am unsure of how our information was obtained but an explanation is warranted.

Review: The medical billing and coding program website (http://www.[redacted]) has a transfer of credit policy that they do not honor. The website clearly states to graduate faster and save money. Classes are not required to be paid for. They also change exam numbers of courses between programs despite exact material and exam, thus requiring same classes to be taken twice. I would not have signed up for this program nor sent transcripts (cost and time) if this information had been true.Desired Settlement: Information of transfer of credit policy honest and clear so other students/consumers are not rooked into this scam.
