PJ Trailers Reviews (%countItem)

I purchased a 24ft trailer model T-6. 16ft gravity tilt and 8ft stationary. I purchased the trailer to pick up a truck in Colorado. The trailer pulled fine, the brakes were fine.
I put a 84 F350 gas crew cab. About 30 minutes into the trip the tilt popped open and the locking latch was still in place. I had to jack it up and re- latch. Put a 2" strap at the front of the tilt. Didn't use it for the rest of the week. Drove home with the truck and the latch popped again and broke the strap. 3am in the morning. Then I installed a chain binder to keep it in place. Pete's trailer sales could not fine a problem with the latch, they put a tractor on the back and it didn't pop open But they didn't drive it down the road with the load, So it's not the same test. PJ told me that it was loaded incorrectly, That is BS. Said I should of had weight on the front of the tilt. Not sure how you would load a truck that is longer than the tilt, the wheels distance between the axles are 16ft.
I was looking to get my money back and they could sell it as a used trailer. I Will Never Buy Another PJ trailer, and I will let everyone know that they don't take care of the customer's concerns.
The latch hooks look strong but they are located in the middle of the trailer and hook to a channel that must have flecked when going down the road because the latch and handle did not move. I also scratch the paint and PJ dosen't have a paint warranty.

PJ Trailers documented this issue in a warranty claim, in which we received pictures of how the truck was loaded on the trailer. We noticed that the truck was improperly loaded on the trailer. The front axle of the truck was pulled forward onto the stationary deck (in front of the tilting deck) and the rear axle was stationed behind the rear axle, which is on the tilting deck, and behind the hinge assembly on which the deck tilts. This causes an unsafe loading condition, as there is no weight on the front portion of the tilt deck (truck is pulled forward onto stationary section) and all of the weight that is on the tilting deck is behind the tilting hinge system. This causes an upward lift, and forces the latching system to fail as weight is improperly distributed on this trailer.

We advised this customer of proper loading practices and weight distribution, and alerted him to the dangers caused by such loading practices.

Then why did Pete's trailer sales sell me this trailer if it was unsafe to run on the road with this truck? I told them what I was going to put on it. I also have 4 other dealers telling me that it should not be an issue to put my truck on this trailer? Recorded calls all stating the same thing.
Also no way to put weight on the front put of the tilt, if the trucks front wheels were located on the front of the tilt then all the weight would be a the back of the trailer and that is very unsafe. I was also told by Pete's that the tilt should be able to hold 4000lb. The truck that we put on it is a total weight at around 5000lb with most on the weight ar the front engine. If PJ is staying that this was not the trailer for my needs, then the dealers need to make that known to the buyers.
Also the fact that the latch is located in the center of the tilt ( at the weakest point of the channel) with no other support, I feel is a poor design and should be looked at.

I also just had a couple more notes about the quality of the trailer.
(1) chains were too short and need to be changed before left Pete's when we picked it uo.
(2) 7 pin connector is too long and had to be wrapped around the trailer so it wouldn't drag on the ground.
(3) side marker/ blinker was not blinking.
(4) the boards under the front tilt are all cut to different lengths. Not sure why ?
Thanks.

I forgot to mention that the front 3 or 4 drivers side steak pockets are tight for the D rings that Pete's sold me. All 4 that I purchased don't fit in those slots.
Going to pick it up now so I'll see if Pete's fixed the marker light. I'll let you know.
Thanks.

PJs refused to pay/help to fix my trailer, problem happened w/in 1 month of purchase & left me in the dark, I had to reach out several times.
Trailer was sold without a pin, dealer did not have a pin long enough, they stated that it was not necessary. Trailer had been fine for a couple wks until one day coupler came off causing the trailer to get damaged by the bobcat that was chained inside of the dump truck. Reached out several times before finally getting an email back trying to justify why the claim was denied. I reached out several times with questions and no response finally they responded saying they will not help.

purchased 2020 dump trailer 5/28/19 model D3122 from the Erie Colorado location.

Also struggling with their authorized dealer at trailer source service department in Wheatridge, Co.

Purchase price was approx 10k

Reason for denial was that the dealer was not able to confirm that the coupler was faulty. This is the same dealer that tried to sell me the trailer without ramps, they had to pull ramps off of another trailer to put on ours. They did not have a pin for the coupler that was long enough but later said it is not necessary.

Desired Outcome

I would like for PJs to at least help in repairing the damage for the faulty trailer. You are relying on information on a dealer that was not fully understanding trailers enough that we had to show the sales rep where the ramps were missing from. He couldn't even connect the trailer to the hitch, he had to call someone else to help. In the end they were trying to "make' a pin long enough since they didn't have one (this was after the sale was complete). I understand you have a business to run, but so do some of your customers. I have tried reaching out and the lack of accountability and customer service is quite disturbing. Empathy goes a long way. I am most offended by the lack of attention, I had to call and leave several messages and go online to submit a request in which I finally got an email back. I emailed them asking for a solution and they stopped responding to me, I emailed them again and again in which they finally responded saying the claim is denied. I asked for help with the parts department and I couldn't get any support on that since my trailer has been in the shop for over a week which is costing me money not to mention I am losing business during my peak season.

One of our warranty representatives took this claim, and we received pictures of damage to both the jack/mounting channel in the front of the trailer, as well as damage to the gate at the rear of the trailer. The jack is bent towards the front of the trailer. We proceeded to ask questions about the cause/origin of this damage.

The customer stated to us that the coupler (hitch mechanism) on this unit became unattached from the tow vehicle while unloading a piece of equipment, which allowed the trailer to slide backwards. The trailer slide backwards, the jack made contact with the ground and bent the jack and mounting channel, and the trailer came to a stop when it impacted another object behind it, damaging the gate (our understanding).

The claim is not actually against PJ Trailers at this point, as we do not manufacture this coupler/hitch device. We purchase this coupler and install it on new trailers.

The dealer (Trailer Source, Colorado)attempted to re create this coupler issue, and they were unable to pull the hitch ball out of the coupler. This indicates that the coupler, if properly latched, is not defective and retains it's hold on the ball on the tow vehicle.

Trailer Source has returned the customer's original coupler to PJ Trailers, and we were also unable to find a defect in the coupler.

We do not feel that there is a defect in the coupler, it simply appears as if the customer left the coupler unlatched (human error) and the coupler was not holding onto the ball, and therefore the trailer was able to become disconnected from the tow vehicle. It is the operator's responsibility to ensure the trailer is safely secured to the tow vehicle before operating the trailer. This is the reason for our denial of warranty coverage.

We are taking the extra step of sending this coupler back into the manufacturer (Demco) for final testing and evaluation, and can report back with our findings if necessary.

Main frame on the 1K HD trailer warped after cross-member broke after 8-months of normal use. PJ trailers REFUSES to warranty the frame. Buyer BEWARE.
This trailer was manufactured by PJ Trailers Texas USA model 1K (tilt) 2017 and used on a regular basis for only 8 months starting in Aug 2018. It is still under factory warranty. The trailer itself looks very good. The paint job is top-notch and we were excited about this new addition to our fleet of trailers, however, we learned quickly their welds do not stand up and it appears they are using imported low-quality steel. After 8 months of use, we started to notice cracks on critical welds on the main frame (A frame under the tilt deck). Not too long after, we noticed that one of the cross-members also had broken welds. Finally, the unimaginable happened. While driving down the road loaded, the main frame bowed where the cross-member was engaged. We finally let PJ know about the problem. They gave us a claim number and told us to take it to a local dealer. We scheduled a time with the dealer and took the trailer on 5/28/19. While driving with the trailer across a bridge, one of the frame-members fell out and started dragging along the road! I pulled off to the nearest safe place (off the bridge), and used a ratchet to secure the cross-member hanging (about 7' wide maybe 20 pounds that holds the lock mechanism). The trailer would no longer lock when the deck came down. We have been using a 10K ratchet strap to hold the tilt-deck down due to being tight on business and trying to get our customers served. We got the trailer to the dealer. They told us to leave it there. PJ contacted us next day and refused to warranty the trailer. They claim that we made repairs to the trailer and that the trailer failed due to these repairs. It appears the dealer is in cahoots with them and after seeing the extensive damage they realized how bad the damage was $$$. We had 2 trailers built by a local company which don't have the best paint job, but have never seen any mechanical failure like this. Buyers run away, please go to the proper authority's if you experience an accident on the road with a PJ trailer so others can know! There is discussion about class-action lawsuit. Please save your money, prevent an accident, and go to a local reputable company. We are knowledgeable people working at a reputable local company and run a similar trailer with no problems. If you are unfamiliar, there is not much else that holds the trailer once the locking mechanism and main frame on a tilt trailer fails. Buyer BEWARE!!!

Desired Outcome

Refund for trailer or replacement of the broken main A frame and cross-member.

PJ Trailers Response • Jun 03, 2019

Customer took this trailer to a PJ Trailers dealer in Washington, who examined this trailer for us. Dealer took notes that this trailer had several non-factory welds and grinding marks on it. This is indicative of third party repair/modification/alteration of the trailer. PJ Trailers did not authorize/know about this until notified by dealership that visually inspected the trailer.

Our warranty policy states, in section 1.1.4 "Warranty Void" - PJ Trailers is not responsible for damage caused by accident, negligence, abuse, misapplication, or misuse of a trailer or any of it's component parts. Loading in excess of gross vehicle load rating stated on the certificate plate will invalidate any and all warranties. Any modifications, alterations, or repair to any product manufactured by PJ Trailers without PJ Trailers prior knowledge and written consent will void manufacturer's warranty.

PJ Trailers found that the warranty on this trailer had been breached by the customer with the customer's admittance of having done prior repair work to the unit without our knowledge, as well as the inspecting dealerships notes on the various welds/grinding marks on the unit that were made after the trailer had left the factory (evidenced by paint damage).

Unfortunately, PJ Trailers has no way of certifying or validating any repair if we do not have an opportunity to provide our input on the repair. Poor repair work can lead to further problems, structural weakness, and other safety issues. We prefer to help with repairs and recommend only capable repair facilities perform any repair.

For the reasons stated above, the customer has voided the warranty on this trailer.

Customer Response • Jun 07, 2019

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
They are giving a complete run-around because the extent of the damages requested in this case is beyond what any dealer can warranty as indicated by what I experienced when I took this trailer into to my local dealer. When I first opened this claim, PJ trailers did not ask any such questions regarding anything related to any past repair work unrelated or related to this problem, which could or could not include welding depending on what context it is used in. They have been trying to push this in their favor after the dealer saw the extent of the trailer damage and realized how bad it really was. Their welds cracking is a result of their lack of quality control which started as a small unnoticed problem and led to catastrophic main frame damage (the actual frame twisted) that is costly to repair, deeming the trailer useless at this point. Nonetheless, I will still respond to their accusations.

Response for Paragraph 1:
I initially opened a claim with PJ who requested that I take the trailer to their local dealer. The dealer scheduled us for bringing in this trailer for 1 month after we reported the trailer breaking to PJ (was this already a run-around?). The first thing the dealer told me when I arrived with the trailer was they could not personally repair the trailer here after seeing the extent of the damages (why was I sent here when PJ told me otherwise?). The dealer also asked what I was towing with the trailer and tried to explain to me that the Gross-Vehicle-Wieght-Rating (GVWR) stamped on the inside of the trailer didnt mean that you can haul that weight and that I should have been told that when I made my purchase. (I had already clarified the GVWR with PJ and was within the limit). In addition, and contrary to what PJ told me, minimal information was taken regarding my credentials. The same week, the local dealer began to follow-up with calls and threats to charge me storage fees and having the trailer towed/impounded trying to get me to remove the trailer. These calls would happen in a similar time frame when PJ was talking with me on the phone/email to sort this Warranty issue out. They were deliberately trying to force me to remove the trailer so that they would not have to do any Warranty work on it. These threats forced me to come back and pick up the trailer from the dealer the very same week with no Warranty work even after I was told that I would be taken care of. In the mean time, in my emails with a PJ rep, I was told that I would receive a decision on the warranty issue, but then never responded when I picked up the trailer from the dealer after the threats I received.

Response for paragraph 2:
This is the key to the problem here. The response provided by PJ where they quote their own Warranty policy but do not follow it. If they followed what their policy states then we would not be filing a complaint. I have NOT had this trailer in an accident, neglected, misapplied, or misused this trailer. I meet all of that criteria. Also, the trailer has NOT been loaded in excess of the GVWR, so I also meet that criteria. Finally, this trailer has not been altered or modified in any sort of way. It is identical to any one of their trailers that they sell now. In fact, this trailer has only been used for only 8 months! PJ states that I the customer, breached the warranty by performing repair work. I have never claimed such in our conversations but instead have told them the exact the contrary that I have never performed this repair on the trailer. Had I repaired the trailer, then the cross-member would have never fell out and the main-frame would NOT have warped to begin with and we would not be asking for warranty coverage if a repair to the problem was made. Why would I be wasting my time as a consumer to warranty this trailer if I performed the repair myself?

Response for Paragraph 3:
These are not my words. I have claimed in writing and over the phone that I did not breach your warranty and that you are fully obligated to repair the trailer based on the Warranty policy. PJ office staff likes to play the warranty policy in their own favor. The Warranty Void statement does not specify as to what is classified as "repair work". Is welding considered a repair work? Does it mean that if the trailer started cracking at the welds that you can't weld it, even if it's a road-side emergency? So we would rather have the trailer fall apart on the road and cause an accident? Why doesn't PJ write a more specific Warranty Statement? Is this another run-around from potential problems from consumers? When I made a warranty request from PJ, this was for ONE and only ONE problem which I am requesting warranty for and that's to warranty the cross-member which fell out while driving on the road and the main frame that twisted/warped which I have requested that they Warranty. Their quality control, design and low quality components is a result of the failure. I have photos that show the poor workmanship loose cross-member to the main frame which led to the main frame bowing out under the weight of the loaded trailer.

Final Response:

PJ advertises " 3 year frame warranty and a 1 year limited warranty" I want my trailer Warrantied like their policy claims. It appears that PJ needs more oversight in their business. They have no interest in making the right approach when it comes to safety as evidenced by this complaint and other consumers online. They would rather have a trailer fail apart completely on the road possibly causing a major accident before they will step in to remedy a problem. They are more than likely using low-quality, imported steel (Mexico or China?) to fabricate their trailers which results in problems later on down the road for consumers that we may or may not be able to fix. Here is a quote taken from another owner of a PJ trailer that had to "re-weld" some of the factory welds on a PJ trailer. "Anyone else have PJ Trailer literally start breaking apart on them? I have a 5" Channel buggy hauler that I *** near lost today because they only had about 2" of weld total on the one side of the frame. I can tell they built the deck completly first then place it on the channel yoke leaving little access for welding. I was very lucky to notice it hanging. Did I mention that I have only used this trailer 5 times in 2 years and never anywhere near capacity."
I have also provided photos. There's welds breaking consistently from the back of the trailer to the front. One of the more evident failures is a bracket from the tire holder which is welded to the deck frame, had completely broke in 2 places cutting open the channel. If the bracket cant hold the tire, then how do we expect to get better quality to hold our trailer together? I would like a just resolution from this company. They have gone to far with their workmanship and we as consumers are suffering as a result.

PJ Trailers Response • Nov 15, 2018

PJ Trailers received pictures of several broken uprights on this customer's trailer, and have previously received complaints of uneven tire wear was caused by a bent axle. We strongly feel that the pictures we received from this customer show damage to both the trailer and axles, as opposed to defects in manufacturing. Our warranty policy does not cover damage caused by the operator.

This damage is very consistent with excessive squat at the rear of the trailer during loading/unloading the trailer. The ramps have supports built into them which contact the ground to prevent this squat (pictured), but if heavy equipment is loaded on very uneven terrain or very soft ground, the supports may not be used to their full advantage, causing the frame to bow as the rear of the trailer squats under weight of the load. As the frame is pushed towards the ground, the uprights that you see pictured begin to take stress, and break. Notice how the welding is not broken, the metal itself has simply torn in two. This is an indicator that the welding on this trailer is of superb quality, and there was simply enough stress at play here, caused by improper loading practices, that caused a solid piece of steel to simply fail under stress.

Trailer is Tagged for a GVWR of 18,000 pounds but manufacturer shipped with tires rated for 4,000 pounds less than GVWR tagged on trailer and title
This trailer was special ordered, with heavy duty axles, rated for 8,000 pounds. The title, and the data plate both state the trailer is rated for 18,000 pounds GVWR, which when tongue weight is taken out, is an acceptable rating, but they placed tires on the trailer that are rated for 14,000 pounds. So when the trailer is operated at capacity, there is a severe overload condition. I had my local dealer contact the manufacturer, and I also contacted them directly, via phone, and social media messaging.

Their direct response was "we dont see what the big deal is, we do this all the time, and you're the first to gripe". Literally. In those words. That same response was given to my local dealer.

I spoke directly with a local DOT police officer, and was instructed that if I operated this trailer at its rated weight, I would be illegally operating an unsafe vehicle due to the 4,000 pound overweight condition. In the event of an accident I could be cited or even placed at fault for operating an improperly equipped vehicle.

This would be similar to dodge selling you a new truck, and stating that the max towing capacity on the trucks door tag, was 18,000 pounds, but the truck was only equipped to safely haul 14,000 pounds. I feel like PJ is using cheap import tires, that the tax isnt as much on, and equipping trailers with said tires, due to a volume purchase discount. They arent taking my safety or others on the road into consideration, and they are paying no attention to my concern when I called them out on it. Citing that they know its wrong, but everyone else is doing it, dont fix my 13,900 dollar purchase, thats going to require me to spend another 1500-2000 dollars just to be able to use it legally.

Desired Outcome

I want PJ to trade my tires and wheels, at no charge, that are unused, for a set of tires and wheels capable of matching the 18,000 pound GVWR they gave my trailer. Otherwise this trailer is grounded until I can equip it properly to be safe and legal.

Unfortunately, the complaint has no vin information attached to it, so we are left at a standstill until it is received.

Trailer rusting in main support beam
Purchased a PJ Trailer from Oconner trailer in Burnet TX. 8 months after purchase rust water is covering loads that I have on the trailer. apon inspection found there to be incomplete welds on the main support beam of the trailer allowing water to sit in the main beam and rust. 5 areas on the main beam to be accurate. Contacted Oconner trailer about the issue they referd me to PJ trailers. Contacted PJ sent pictures to the warranty dept. There response is this is perfectly normal for the trailers to do this. There so called fix is to send me a new beam and have it welded in to replace the rusted one in place. I find this un satisfactory repair. Its the main support beam for the tilt aspect of the trailer. That would compromise the intergrity of the trailer and also the powder coat witch would lead to future rusting. It seams PJ doesn't stand behind there warranty
Its only a matter of time before this trailer fails and hurts someone.

Desired Outcome

Even though, we have gone above and beyond and listened to the customer as to what he needed, and offered him ways to achieve his goal in trading this trailer in for a newer larger unit that better fit his needs, at some cost to him.

Customer's latest response was that he would accept our offer, if only we include, $2,000 worth extra options on the trailer at no cost. We were not willing to cover an extra $2,000, but let the customer know that our offer was still on the table for him.

All of our efforts to resolve have been declined.

Pj trailer has refused to fix the issue to my satisfaction. Looks like I need to hire a attorney. It's sad that a customer has to file with the state to get anything done with big corporation now days. I guess the word warranty means nothing to PJ trailers.

Looking for full credit so I can replace this trailer with a qualit trailer

Pj trailer is trying to get me to pay more money for a trailer I already own Plus the difference in the new one. Pj trailers has not stepped up to the plate and taken care of there defected trailer. Now they are Bullying me and giving deadlines to there ridiculous offer.
