Practical Windows & Doors Reviews (%countItem)

On April 22, 2019, I ordered a front door which needed to be custom-made. I was promised in writing that a rush would be put on the order and that at the most it would take six weeks. I gave a deposit of $686 to practical Windows and doors and made the check out and gave it to Mr. Bill P. who is one of the general managers. They did come out and measure but since the signing of the contract which is April 22 I've heard no more from this company Guarding the delivery and installation of my new door. I've called many times and was finally able to speak to Bob one of the general managers two weeks ago and was informed that the door never went into production because they were out of stock of that size door. Yet no one from the company called me and notified me they just let me sit and wait and wonder where that door was. I paid $686 deposit and in six weeks was supposed to have my new door. I called again this past Friday which was June 22nd 2019 and was informed by Bob the general manager that he was going to look into it and find out where the door was in production and get back to me. All weekend I sent emails to the company and to Mr. P. who's the other general manager. no one has called me back. This morning, Monday, June 24 I called the office and spoke to the secretary and told her I'm trying to get of hold of one of the general managers because they are seemingly avoiding me. I want my deposit back and I do not want to do business with this company. I feel like I've been scammed and I feel like I've been treated very badly. I would not recommend this company to any other customer. Senior citizens like myself are constant target for companies to scam for money.

We paid $2,465.00 of $7,265.00 for window replacements on March 5, 2019.
They have twice failed to deliver anything after announcing a specific date.
On two occasions they have announced that they would be here on specific dates and times. The first time they couldn't make it because of lack of installers, the second time (today) they postponed their arrival because they had "another job to finish". This was followed up by a second call announcing that the installer couldn't make it because he didn't know he had to come "all the way" to Lakeland and that in addition, he had a doctor's appointment.
No body answers at their office. The salesman (Bill P.) does not answer and has not returned our calls.

Desired Outcome

We want a full refund.

I have spoken with Dr. and Mrs.. Very nice people. They Had an installation date of 5/23/19 and called the day before to cancel do to a golf outing that had to attend. We tried to schedule for the next day 5/24/19. We have our installs booked up to 2 weeks in advance. We where fortunate enough to move a Friday install into there Thursday time slot. Unfortunately that job rolled into their Friday install and they where notified immediately. The new install date was moved to the following Thursday. We where delayed going to that job and could not get there until late that afternoon. Both parties agreed Friday install. As of today all the windows besides 1 is done. They had travel plans that could not be missed. When they return from their travels we will install the last window.
we had little bit of the disconnect was Dr. *** was contacting our sales rep. and he was forwarding the messages to me and I was speaking to Mrs.. I have given both my cell phone number and stated that they can contact me at anytime. To my knowledge they love the new windows and though that our installers did a great job.

(The consumer indicated he/she ACCEPTED the response from the business.)
Ultimately, the company responded in an semi-acceptable manner. My opinion is that they are somewhat disconnected. The office calls to say that the installers will be there at 9:30 AM. They don't show up. Then they say 12:30. They don't show up either! As it turns out (and that is understandable), the installer had a doctor's appointment and he was never notified that he was supposed to go to Lakeland! He eventually made it to our house and started (but not finished), the job. The reason there is one window left to finish is because the installer couldn't find his assistant for the second visit! So he did half of the job.

NEVER EVER USE THIS COMPANY !
Signed contract on June 18, 2018 for the replacement of 6 windows with a projected completion date in 7 to 8 weeks. Project was not completed until November 20, 2018. Almost 24 weeks (6 months) after contract date. The only professionals in this company are the installers. The owner Jeffrey A. R. and the office management are totally uncaring and totally useless when it comes to customer service. Wrote the owner ( Sent by Registered Mail) Mr. R. on October 23, 2018 detailing the numerous failed commitment dates and total misstatements given to us. Never receive the courtesy of a reply. The most unprofessional home contractor we have ever dealt with.

I'm very sorry that you are disappointed with our company.

You did place your order on June 18th. June is the beginning of hurricane season and our work loads and lead times go out a few weeks. Back then it was taking us several weeks just to get our jobs professionally re-measured. Our suppliers lead times also grew.

We completed the initial window installation on August 20th, 2018, a total of 8 weeks from the time of your original order. Unfortunately your kitchen window wasn't there. It took us roughly 10 weeks to receive it and install the missing window.

We are very sorry that the kitchen window took so long. We did everything we could to expedite it but were unable. We are not an uncaring company, our customers are very important to us. I can understand that when we can't expedite the order or get the exact information from our supplier to you it may appear that we are uncaring, but really we're not.

Thank you for giving our installation team a compliment. Our products and installers are top notch, and our prices are more than competitive. Had your kitchen window been there we would not be having this conversation. I regret it wasn't.

We will reach out to you and see if we can't do something nice for you and hopefully it might take this bad taste in your mouth that was created mainly by the missing window and our inability to expedite the delivery or the information flow of the 1 window.

Ordered Hurricane Shutters on August 6, 2018 with a $1000 deposit and promised delivery date of 8-10 weeks. Still no shutters or communication.
Met with Bill Porter from Practical Windows and Doors on August 8, 2018 and gave him a deposit ($1000) for hurricane shutters for our home (total of $4000). Bill indicated that we could expect the shutter delivery to be around the end of October (8-10 weeks).
I contacted Bill on October 5th to get an update, whereupon he asked me to contact LORI at XXX-XXX-XXXX to get an installation date.
I contacted Lori, who informed me that the delivery would be 12-14 weeks, not 8-10.
It is now 15 weeks and we have heard nothing despite repeatedly reaching out.

Desired Outcome

Full refund of $1000 deposit.

Practical Windows & Doors Response • Nov 16, 2018

I can understand Mr. frustration having to wait now 12 weeks for his custom made hurricane shields. We don't manufacture the hurricane shields, sometimes I wish we did. Since hurricane Irma hit us last year, lead times from our suppliers for shields have continued to grow and grow.

Our manufacture was running 8 to 10 weeks manufacturing lead time from the time they receive our order. It's now taking 12 weeks. It takes a week or so to process the order before we can place the order since after we receive the order we have to re-measure and engineer the order This is in addition to the manufacturers lead time.

We sell custom manufactured products. Our agreement with all of our customers states that in addition to addressing that the order is custom made and cannot be cancelled, addresses that we cannot be held responsible for orders that come in later than they should.

The good news is that we expect the *** shield delivery to our facility within 10 days. We will contact Mr. and arrange a prompt installation after we receive the shields.

Again, we apologize for the long lead times, but we have no control over them.

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
Is there a reason that the company has refused to communicate about this order, and has only done so because the Revdex.com is involved?

The claim that the company will take delivery of the panels within 10 days indicates that the order has not yet been started, as this provides the company several more weeks to manufacture and deliver the product.

I will consider the lack of direct contact/communication and/or proof of manufacturing and a set delivery date from the company within the next 10 days as a cancellation of the contract, and expect a full return of my deposit immediately thereafter.

Practical Windows & Doors Response • Dec 26, 2018

Mr. Smiths job is complete and paid in full. Lead times on hurricane products became very long last year due to Hurricane Irma.

Customer Response • Dec 27, 2018

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
Nine weeks after the promised date, the company indicated that they completed the work.

I have never dealt with a more dishonest, uncommunicative company, and have grave concerns that the product that they provided will actually work when needed.

My husband and I signed a contract on March 23, 2018 to replace 13 windows with delivery and install expected within 6-8 weeks. The job was complete on August 20, 2018. One of the windows that is to be inspected at the warehouse was installed with broken glass. Getting a replacement pane was like pulling teeth. We were told over and over again that it was coming in on a certain date and it never arrived. We were told over and over again that someone would be at our house on a particular day and they didn't arrive. During our 5 month process several employees left the company including Ron who was the Installation Manager, Carrie who was our salesperson and Shawn who was an installer. Obviously, this company is experiencing problems. When we didn't pass inspection with the Building Inspector, Jo in the office, argued with the Inspector. The information that the Inspector needed had been on the window in very small print. He made a second trip to our home and the inspection was passed.

I have several pages of notes on our experience with this company. It was obvious early in the process that we had a rocky road ahead of us.

One of the deciding factors to use this company was their A+ rating with the Revdex.com. The experience we had did not live up to this rating!

Re: Complaint by ***
I have received and reviewed Ms. letter to the Revdex.com. She correctly states that her order was placed with us on March 23rd, and job was completed on August 20th. This would lead some to believe that she didn't receive her order until late August. That's not really the case.
The order was signed on Friday, March 23rd, 2018. The order came into our office the following Monday, March 26th.
The windows were shipped from the factory and received by us on May 15th; approximately 6 weeks after the order was placed. We quote 6 to 8 weeks to receive the order from the factory, so the order came in on-time.
By June 1st, we installed all but 1 of the windows on the job, and most of the storm shields. The 1 window not installed was back-ordered by the factory and delivered and installed two weeks later.
At this point there were two service items left to be done. Install the few remaining hurricane shields and replace a piece of glass (IMPACT) in window #10.
The remaining shields were installed and all that remained was to wait until the factory shipped the replacement glass for window #10. This is what Ms. described as like pulling teeth. I don't disagree with her. For whatever the reason, we had to wait nearly 3 months to receive the correct glass from the factory. Several of the promised ship dates from the factory came and went without receiving the glass. Then when it came in, it was the wrong size. So we had to wait even more. When it came in we completed the service and the project on August 20th, 2018.
For clarity, window #10 came in with a crack in the upper sash. The glass pack is a triple pane, fully sealed unit. The crack occurred on the outside pane of glass. Don't misunderstand, the glass did have a crack and needed to be replaced, but window # 10 was installed the entire time we were waiting for the replacement glass. The window, even with the outer glass crack, was fully sealed from the elements. I don't want anyone to think that the glass had a hole in it like a baseball hit it.
Another point Ms. brought up was concerning the final building inspection. On the 1st visit the building inspector failed the inspection saying that engineering documentation was missing. As Ms. said, Jo from our office got on the phone with the inspector and argued with him. Jo did argue with him, on behalf of the ***'s because the engineering the inspector needed was on the job. Finally, she was able to convince the inspector and the job was passed and no correction notice was posted.
Ms. also mentioned she had several service appointments where nobody showed up or called. This is also a pet peeve of mine when it happens to me. Most all of our service calls were run by our service and installation manager, or his employee. We don't put up with anybody standing up a customer. That installation manager is no longer with the company.
I was glad to see that there were no negative comments made about the products and the installation process. Shawn is an excellent installer and continues to do excellent work for us to this day. Most complaint letters to the Revdex.com concern unacceptable installation, shoddy workmanship, or people not doing what they are contracted to do. The root of this problem was the long time it took to get a piece of replacement glass. We were just as frustrated as the ***'s, we don't fabricate the glass, that's the manufacturers job.
I am going to reach out to the ***'s and see if there is something we can do for them that might make them a little happier.

Sincerely,

Jeff R., President
Practical Windows & Doors, Inc.

Customer Response • Sep 24, 2018

On August 31, 2018 Jeff R., President of Practical Windows & Doors, Inc responded to my complaint. He stated "I am going to reach out to the ***'s and see if there is something we can do for them that might make them a little happier." It has been 24 days since he made that comment. To date, we have not been contacted by anyone from Practical Windows & Doors. This is the type of service we received from this company. We were promised several shipping dates, several arrival dates, several days when someone would be at our house, several completion dates and none of those dates were complied with. When someone says they're going to contact me, they should follow through.

The windows we got installed failed inspection twice, nothing has been done about the shutter screws.
The company has not fully completed the job. We have windows that are not compliant and have failed inspection twice. I would be okay if the company just fixes it once and for all so we do not have to deal with them again. The crew has done a great job, but unfortunately the crew's manager does not want to do anything about the storm shutter screws that keep failing inspection. They have already gotten fined by the city, and we have yet to hear anything else from the company as far as follow up on getting these windows to pass inspection. I would like to have them complete the job once and for all and the right way. My windows are not compliant, causing this to be a safety issue for my family during storm season and I would this solved as soon as possible.. Please have my window storm shutter screws fixed as soon as possible, so we can have the inspection pass. Also... I can't keep taking off work so this inspection needs to pass the next time, which would make it the third time we need to make arrangements to leave work early to be here. Been dealing with this company since February. Please contact inspector so he can guide you if you are not sure what he means.

Desired Outcome

Please fix the storm shutter screws and anything else the inspector states was missing, need these windows to be done right for my family's safety. If you are unable to complete the job right within the next few weeks, I would like a refund for the hassle it has been to try to get my windows to pass inspection.

Practical Windows & Doors Response • Jun 22, 2018

At the time this complaint was filed our company did have an inspection that did not pass; a code compliant window or two was missing an installation screw, and the building inspector had a question regarding the type of installation fasteners we used installing the storm shields. The building inspector researched his concerns and determined the hardware was correct and compliant. The job failed a second inspection because the customer called for an inspection (the contractor should always schedule and call for the inspection) before the contractor made the corrections.

Yesterday the job was re-inspected and everything is complete with the exception of 1 corner bolt which was installed yesterday as well.

The inspector asked the homeowner to leave his fence open so he could swing by and verify the bolt and sign off on the job today.

In response to our customers concern that the windows were not code compliant, they are and exceed the requirements of the Florida Building Code, which is one of the toughest in the nation.

All of our products exceed the tough requirements of the Florida Building Code. In addition, all of Pinellas County is in the hurricane impact zone which has even higher demands and standards that interior portions of our state.

If my experience with this company were a sitcom, it would be hilarious. Unfortunately it was reality and not funny. Communication with them was almost nonexistent. But that didn't matter, because any communication that came from them was usually a lie.
For example, they told us from day one that once we signed the contract it would take 6 to 8 weeks to get the windows and door installed. It was 12 weeks before the initial installation took place. They told us they inspect all the windows after they arrive in there warehouse, to make sure non are damaged. One window showed up with a broken frame. They said it would take two weeks to get the replacement frame. Today, 5 weeks later, still no window frame.
It has been four months since we signed the contract and still missing a windows.
I would say, I am happy with the windows and door that they put in. I feel like the Shoreline window (wind rated) is of good quality.
If you like having your teeth pulled, them you may be okay with using this company.

Practical Windows & Doors Response • May 30, 2018

The ***'s placed their order on January 29th. Our normal delivery time runs between 6 & 8 weeks.
Unfortunately their order took an additional 3 weeks because their windows were ordered bronze exterior and white interior. Bronze exterior is a very special process that adds steps to the manufacturing process and sometimes adds extra time in manufacturing.

The manufacturer can't always control exactly when the ordered bronze material will be received by them.
This made it difficult for us to know exactly when we would receive the order, and difficult to pass that information along. We're incredibly sorry for the extra 3 weeks it took, but honestly it was out of our control.

The custom bronze frames have a protective wrapping on them from the factory which we don't take off until the product is on the job site and ready to install. However, before we load the windows we do inspect them as best we can making sure there is no broken glass. As I mentioned, the frames are factory wrapped because the bronze finish iis delicate. We didn't find out about the broken frames until we unwrapped them on the job site.

The new frames have been received and we have contacted Mr. to arrange installation.

I noticed on the completion certificate the ***'s liked the windows and said our men did a good job installing and leaving the job site clean. I sincerely apologize to the ***'s for the communication problems they had with our company. We look forward to replacing the broken frame and getting the last window opening completed. Again, we're sorry the order took a little longer to come in than expected.

Jeff R., Practical Windows & Doors, Inc.

I called Practical Windows & Doors for an estimate on relacing 18 windows, so this was a fairly big job. On October 11, the sales representative came to my home as scheduled. He was very imformative and spend over two hours telling me about CWS windows. He said that he would send an estimate to me soon. I never heard from him again. Today is October 29. Apparently, Practical Windows & Doors didn't need my business. I just signed a contract with Clearwater Windows & Doors yesterday to replace all of my home's windows and side garage door.
