Excessive charge for plumbing job - repair job took less than 3 hours with one man performing repairs with PVC pipe. Charges totaled $2,481.00.
RotoRooter was called for a leak in utility room - the representative came and reviewed problem on 2/10 & charged $206.00 (one man). On 2/12, returned to repair what he stated was "blocked drain pipe" from washer. The total that day was $2,275.00 - for a total of $2,481.00 by a job completed by one man. Supplies to repair could not have been that expensive. I am an 86 year old woman and feel I was taken advantage of. I was told would receive an invoice in mail but have not as yet received an invoice or receipt. Paid for by check nos. 4399 and 4401. The man presented no business card.

Desired Outcome

I feel I was taken advantage of essentially because of my age and being a female. The charges were excessive and for this job, the hourly rate for the company was more than $800 per hour. I have not contacted them because I do not hear well.

On 2-10-20 at 8:49AM our technician was dispatched to this home for a clogged drain. After our technician investigated this washer drain, he found this drain line had been leaking raw sewage in the crawl space for quite some time and needed to be repaired. At this time our technician informed the customer about the situation and recommended that our estimator come out to give an estimate. The homeowner kindly agreed to do so. We then sent out our estimator to the home that same day. Our estimator gave an estimate for $2,275.00 to cut out this old washing machine line that had galvanized pipe with cast iron and lead fitted pipes. It also included removing the raw sewage in the affected area and eliminating blood borne pathogens that can cause infectious diseases. This bid for work was agreed to be performed by the homeowner at this time.
Two days later, on 2-12-20 at 8:26 AM, another technician was sent to perform the agreed upon work. Our technician had to remove some raw sewage first from underneath the home in order to gain access to affected area to replace this drain line. He then cut out the old cast iron pipe that had lead filled fittings and replaced it with new PVC drainpipe. Our company has about 7 hours in this project. We have also made several attempts to call Mrs. with no response. We can be reached at *** for any questions.

Customer Response • Mar 30, 2020

I offer the following as disputes to their letter: There was NO raw sewage. The water/drainage was from the washer in the utility room. We have photos of all the work done. The crawl space is lined with plastic, there was no leakage from any sewage. There is/was never bloodborne pathogen exposure as it has been implied. The issue was related to the washer as described in the quotation that we received via email. We have not, to date, received an invoice detailing the work, the hours, etc. We are in receipt of an email 2/12/20 8:27AM notifying us that *** (ONE technician) was on his way. He did arrive around 9am, he went to lunch around 12, leaving his tools here. When he returned from lunch, he collected his tools and asked for payment. No further work was done. We have multiple photos we can send but unable to attach more than one. We still maintain that the charge was excessive given the hours worked, materials used and that you took advantage of an elderly lady.

Roto Rooter performed work at this customer's property on 8/13/19. She wrote Roto Rooter check #1222 on 8/13/19 and it bounced due to insufficient funds in her account and our bank notified us of this on 8/19/19. She was charged a non-sufficient funds fee (NSF) by her bank. Roto Rooter uses a check recovery collection agency called *** to collect on bad checks. *** re-presented the check to her bank on 8/29/19 and it bounced again so her bank charged her another NSF fee. Roto Rooter made two calls one on 8/29/19 to customer and once on 9/3/19 and both times was told they would come pay cash. Customer came and paid cash finally on 9/7/19, three and a half weeks after service. At this time, the owner told *** not to re-present the check for payment and the case was closed. *** has written a statement stating these facts to be true (See attached). The fact is, the customer wrote us a bad check and her bank charged her fees for it bouncing. Roto Rooter agreed to issue her a check for $68.00 to pay for her returned check fees which her bank charged to her. She came and picked up this check from the owner the same day she filed this complaint. There is zero mention of the fact that even though she wrote Roto Rooter a bad check. Roto Rooter graciously agreed to offset her cost for writing that bad check to us, even though we also incurred fees for having to try to collect on this. The bad check is never sent to Roto Rooter. *** is in possession of the check while a case is open and then files the check once the case is closed. We feel Roto Rooter went above and beyond to help the customer in this situation. We expect this to be removed from our Better Business account.

Requested drains cleared and commode seal replaced and commode leveled (no rocking). Drain supposedly cleared but drains are backed up completely again a few weeks after work done. Commode was not leveled and still rocks. Tech "completed" work and got a sign off from my wife before I got back in office. Had to call back for a drain in center of store that was specifically pointed out as not draining. Nothing was done with that drain and they had to be called back out for it. Turned out to be a plug put in the drain so it could not drain. If work was done as requested they would not have had to return to find that out. We currently do not have working drainage and commode in from to of building still rocks. Per technician notes he only ran line 80 feet yet building is 150 feet long with additional distance beyond back of building to reach city sewer. Now I am being told they should have used a jet system for that distance to clear entire line. That should have been discussed at time of service not after the fact when the lines backed up again.

Desired Outcome

either refund for unsatisfactory service or come back out and remediate appropriately at no additional cost.

went out on 2/27/19 pulled commode & snaked the main line & reset the toilet, they called back on 2/27/19 & said they needed us to open the center in the garage (floor drain), the customer said the front & back drains were open and the tech replaced the toilet seal & all were good, wanted us back out on 2/28. We sent *** & *** back on 2/28, they checked what the customer thought was a drain, it was a floor drain cover on top of clean out. They removed the clean out cap and poured 4-5 5 gallon buckets of water in the clean out & showed the customer it was open & taking water properly. We charged nothing for this call. *** called back on 3/21/19 & said the entire drain system is stopped up. *** (dispatch) called him & asked how he would be paying & he stated we did not do our job right & no charges should be made & would not pay us a dime. *** told him if it was not done correctly that there was no possible way it would have made it a month, *** stated that he had been in the hospital for a month & said the line was a couple of hundred feet long & we did not clean the entire line, *** told him we did not charge to clean line over 100 ft & that we had intense rains the past few weeks & confirmed city lines were backing up also. *** spoke with the owner & said we would come back out & offered to camera the line & if if was something that was our fault there would be no charge but if it was something else and not our fault it would be $450 for service & *** stated no matter what it is he WAS NOT paying, he also said the commode was rocking & that we did not fix that when we came out & that was the main reason he called us in the first place. *** told him that our notes had not mentioned anything about a rocking commode but we would be happy to come look at it, he said he was not doing that and was going to report us to the Revdex.com.

They dug and placed additional 50 feet of septic line without a permit. They left our yard unfinished and the our outbuilding damaged. Roto Rooter came out to put in new field lines on 4/2/2018. They did the job then on April 24th we say water bubbling from the ground and had extreme sewage smell from the water. That water then started flowing into our outbuilding which has caused immense damage outside and inside. They have said numerous times they will come out to fix the problems with the yard and the outbuilding numerous times to no avail. I do have all text and call recordings proving so. This has left us with no back yard for the entire summer for our kids or dogs to be in due to the fact I don't feel it's safe for them to be out there. We now have to allow our dogs to use the bathroom on our porch which has caused me to have to continually clean and repaint it. I have paid $3320 in total for a job that is still yet to be finished. When they came back to add the additional lines the gentleman told me they would likely have to remove the lines and start from scratch so now I am concerned about problems in the future. And I can no longer even open the doors to my outbuilding and when it is wet it smells of sewage in my entire backyard and also my neighbors have complained as well. I just want to have another company come out and redo the lines and have a company come out to restore or rebuild our outbuilding.

Desired Outcome

I would like to have another company redo our lines since I do not feel confident in the work they have done and the warranty they supposedly provide will not be upheld. I also need our outbuilding restored or rebuilt due to the damage that was done to it from the septic water and mud going in and around it.

Roto-Rooters SE Response • Aug 16, 2018

On 3/14/17, *** called in at 2:18 pm requesting an estimate to repair or replace the field lines. She said she still has water coming up in the yard where we dug it up on 10/28/16. On 10/28/18, we found the previous owner had driven 2 posts through the field lines and there was approximately a 4' section of line full of concrete, that we replaced. Wes went out on 3/20/18 and met with the customer for an estimate to bypass the first line because of an addition built onto the house over the top of the 1st 2 field lines. He wrote an estimate and met with the customer on 3/26/18 and collected a deposit of $1000.00 to bypass the 1st line of the field lines and install an additional 100' of field lines. We applied for and received a repair permit at a cost of $100.00
Our technicians went out on 3/28/18 and started installing the new field lines and finished covering the lines and dressing the yard with seed and straw. On 3/30/18, after County Health Department inspected and passed the work, we covered the lines, dress the yard, and put down seed and straw. *** met the customer on 4/2/18 on the job sight for the customer to inspect it and he collected the balance of $1300.00 for a total of $2300.00 and the customer signed the invoice showing completion and paid the balance owed. , *** and *** went back out on 5/1/18 at 3:40 pm to dig up and check a wet place in the yard. We then sent some technicians back on 5/12/18 to redress the yard again and put down more seed and straw. Customer called back again on 6/2/18 at 3:34 pm stating that the area where we added the field lines had a spot bubbling up and running down to his building. *** went out to look at it on 6/4/18 at 9:25 am. We sent technicians out on 6/6/18 to dig up and check the line, they installed another short line approximately 20-25 feet while they had it dug up. They then dressed it again and put seed and straw in that area. We pumped the septic tank on 6/27/18 as part of the repairs. Customer called again complaining about her yard and about water. We had numerous days of flooding and heavy rainfall several different times for days at a time from the time we installed the 1st field line addition until this point. We sent a crew back out on 7/14/18 on Saturday to redress the yard and put down more seed and straw again. Customer was told that this would be our last trip to come out and dress the yard. We then had further flooding and downpours again that following Monday for several days. Customer was calling back again on 7/16/18 about water bubbling in the yard again after all the rain. This company has been doing field line and septic work for over 50 years, probably longer than any other company in the area. Our work was inspected by the health department and passed. As far as the statement made about water flowing into her out-building, it is impossible for anything we did to allow water from the septic system to rise to an elevation to flow into her out-building. Every time she has called has been right after torrential rains. Her yard slopes down in the back of her property. This building is sitting at the lower part of her property which is obvious by her own photographs of the water level marks on the doors of the building. You can see the rotten area on the bottoms of the doors which would have taken a long period of time to develop. It is totally impossible for the work we performed to cause the deterioration of this building. The only thing we know that Customer can do is to have many days of dry weather or to put sod down on her yard. We have no control over mother nature and the weather. Our company has made every effort to work with Customer and none of these problems have been caused by our company or workmanship.

Charged for repairs that were not successful, then came out again and said incorrectly assessed situation originally, have not returned phone calls.
-called out to fix 2 leaking drains
-they stated they made the repairs and charged 178.00
-called them out again when drains continued to leak
-the next person said they would have to do 300 dollars of repairs and would send someone out on Thursday
-no one came on Thursday
-I called Thursday evening and they said someone would come on Friday
-the man who came out on Friday said we did not need the 300 dollar repair (he did not charge us)
-we had someone do the work and drains are no longer leaking
-I have called Roto-Rooter to ask for a partial refund and they have not returned my calls

Desired Outcome

We would like a partial refund of the 178 we paid, as it did not resolve any of the issues.

On March 2, 2018 a plumber went to the house for a leak at the tub leaking into the garage below it, he replaced the overflow gasket on the tub and tightened the gasket for the drain, that seemed to stop the leak, we charged $178.00. On March 5, 2018 the customer called back and said it was still leaking so another plumber went out on March 5, 2018 to the house and told the customer they needed to replace the shower pipe to the shower head, on March 9, 2018 a different plumber went out to replace the pipe to the shower head but found the leak was from a hand held shower head and when it was sprayed it went behind exussion, the tech offered also to caulk and seal but the customer stated she would do it herself. The job was completed on March 9. 20-18.
Total of $178.00 included service and parts.

I started having the same problem again 4 mos. later after I paid them to fix it they won't come back. Some time in the first of June 2017 I called Roto Rooter to come see why my septic system wasn't working. On 6-8 they came pumped the tank and jetted the line. They said the line was damaged. On 7-3 they replaced 30' of line. I paid them $1232. They also repaired a connection in pipe close to the pump, which was brand new. All this took a month to get done. The last time they were here he said he was going to come back and check it, he never came back-I had to shovel the dirt back in the hole. In early Oct. I started having the same problem again - the water is backing up in my yard. I called them on 10-4 and he said someone would come. On 10-6 he called left a message said they hadn't forgotten. A week and 1/2 later I called them again he kept making excuses and said someone would come. Two weeks later I called one more time, still no one came. In the beginning of Nov. I called their corp. office. The next day after I talked to them I had a call from one of the guys who had worked out here. He said he would call his boss and call me back. He called back and said some one would be here tomorrow. Then his boss, the one I had been talking to called with his same excuses as before about how short handed he was. He promised someone would be here next week. Well a couple weeks later I called their corp. office again. I have heard no more from them.

Desired Outcome

I need to know what is wrong and have it fixed

On 6/8/17 we gave an estimate to jet the field lines and pump the septic tank. On 6/12/17 we jetted the pump line to the field lines, pumped the septic tank and noted that we would return to work on the field lines. On 6/27/17, we dug up and serviced the line and located the problem with the line. On 7/3/17, we dug up and replaced 30' of 1-1/4" pressure line. On 7/10/17 we returned to repair the pump at no additional charge. On 10/4/17 the customer called in saying there was water on the ground from the pump. Due to rain off and on, we were unable to go investigate immediately. We have not heard anything back from customer since we have had dry sunny weather.

Customer Response • Sep 15, 2018

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
As I said in my statement I called their local office and corporate office several times and they just kept promising someone would come but they never have to this day. Sept. 15, 2018.
Thank you.
