Okay, so here's the full scoopAfter just over year of owning two Superior Solar systems (Hot Water and Pool Heat) we could not be more pleased with our choice of Superior Here's the highlights:
Pool Heat (we like it HOT keep it at or so)
- Mid April to late Oct, no trouble maintaining 90's if you want it
- Into Dec, and starting in March, still nice and warm (to 89)
- The only ongoing "cost" for us is difference in the faster pool pump speed we use to push the water up to the roof when the solar system is on See more details below if desired
Hot Water Heater:
- As I write this review, the water in the tank is degrees and rising and it's 5:pm (roof temp 149)
- We could not be more pleased with this system It provides plenty of hot water for a family of 4, and the tank is a hybrid design with standard heating elements that will turn on if needed like a tank
- Even into the evening, we seem to have plenty of hot water from the daytime "production" of the system When we take nighttime showers, we do see the tank temp drop into the low 100's but have never had issues with running out or not having enough hot water
- I can't tell you exactly how much $$ this system has saved us because we had the HW system installed as the pool was being constructed so there was only about or weeks where we had just the HW system without the pool pump ringing However, I CAN tell you that adding both the pool and the solar HW resulted in our electric bill increasing only about $to $50/monthI translate this to about a $to $savings from the HW Heater It's definitely making a difference, no doubt!

From July to the present (Sept 2016) the only months that we did NOT swim were Jan and Feb pretty much Starting in mid November, we did have to run the system longer to maintain heat, and it wasn't until probably sometime in the April/May timeframe before we could really keep up the heat where we like to keep it in the low 90's
The Helicol product truly is better as David suggestsIt fits well to the roof and doesn't create black "streaks" down your shingles when it rains
We would also HIGHLY recommend getting the automation unit Not only is it easier to simply set a desired temp and leave it alone, it also avoids cooling the pool during an afternoon thunderstorm when the roof panels may be cooler than your pool water And with the AU, you can program it so your pool pump (if you have a variable speed pump) slows down when it's not pushing the solar system This saves you a little bit of money, and the automation also keeps you from having to manually turn it off and on to avoid overheating, etc
Even after several days of stormy weather, this system can "reheat" the water and recover nicely on the next hot summer day We had a recent instance where the temp got down in the low 80's, and with one HOT day, we were right back to low 90's no problem It's very efficient When the seasons change, it takes a little longer to heat but a good sunny day will still make a HUGE difference in a month like November or December
