The Engine Builders Reviews (39)

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below. The Engine Builders response was to no surprise altered to appear as though his business did every thing they could to accommodate me. The necessary repairs that were made to the engine were due to the work that was done when engine was replaced. I need to take my vehicle to another place of business to repair the damages caused by faulty mechanical work. Engine rebuilders just made speedy repairs to get me out of there in hopes that it would have lasted through December when my warranty expired. For them to not honor the warranty they promised and to want me to pay an additional $1000 to do the repairs needed plus not warranty the work after completed is absolutely ridiculous. The repairs needed will cost me approximately $500 to $1000 dollars with a warranty by an honest business. A faulty fuel injector would not have caused the damages that were done to the motor in such a short period of time. I believe this company has done this to several other customers, and unfortunate for them, they need their vehicle and have no choice but to pay additional unnecessary fees to retrieve their vehicle.

There is no way I would pay this fly-by-night operation an additional 1000 plus for their mistakes. I believe they should reimburse me the cost to repair the damages caused by this company's failure to insure my vehicle was repaired properly when the keys were handed to me. For an engine to supposedly need replacing after having the vehicle for less than * weeks is unreal, but to expect the customer to pay for it on top of that is ludicrous!

Regards,

In his first response he put that he contacted us on 7/5/15 now he says he had to go to the hospital and so he wasn't able to call us for close to a month. Which one is it?  He said he had to wait until he got out of the hospital to call us. Well he wasn't even the one who called us. The owner of the truck called us and brought it to us not the brother. When he left my shop the truck was running with the A/C on with windows up. We started the truck and showed him that his fan clutch was not working like it should be and that he would need to change it out soon. He said he would do that. If he can change the fan clutch then he could definitely change the A/C hose or he could take it to someone or we would have changed it but not for free like he wants. What we would do for free is charge the A/C.  We will not replace a rotted out A/C line for free. No shop in town would it is a 20 year old hose that is rotted out.  This guy just wants something for free and if the brother had 40 years experience in automotive then he himself would know a 20 year old A/C line is rotted out and had nothing to do with us. 20 years under a hood with super hot temps hoses go bad the heat kills them especially when you overheat and engine as bad as he did. So what's next when his fuel pump goes out it will be our fault cause it worked before we did the engine? Needless to say when he left the A/C worked he left with the windows up he checked the truck out very thoroughly before he left made sure everything was working. If the A/C was not working then he would have told us right away not wait a month. And my mechanics always test drive with windows down so they can listen to the engine. If windows up you cannot hear the engine and yes they have the AC on just like the customer drove away with the A/C on. We will not replace his 20 year old hose for free we tried to help him but he wants for free and that will not happen. His A/C stopped working on the 24 the day he called us  he gives two different story's in his first complaint he says he called us on 7/5 which he didn't then again on 7/24 in his response he says he didn't call until after he was out of the hospital cause he didn't want the owner of the truck to call us well the owner of the truck is who called us and brought it to us. So if the owner of the truck called us and brought it to us then why would he wait until the brother got out of the hospital when the brother had nothing to do with it.

Review: My brothers 1994 ford ranger p/u was towed to The Engine Builders after I had contacted them regarding them that his engine was bad and needed to be replaced and at that time he was unable to pay for it and that I was acting on behalf of my Mother in-law to find some one to repair his truck for him at a reasonable cost at $2690.25 . His truck was taken to them on 06/18/2015 and we received a call on 07/03/2015 at approximately 3:40 saying it needed a 200.00 dollar radiator , I authorized it and he said we could pick it up it would be ready . When we arrived we paid and waited for them to complete the job and left after there test drive . When we drove it home the air conditioning did not work ! It work perfectly before with no problems . My brother took time of work after I spoke to Tonya and she said to bring it in and they would take care of it . When he got there and they hook up the machine to evacuate the system they found an A/C line was broken and said not there fault its an old line . You can see clearly the line was damaged during the removing and installation the engine and they have refused to make good on what they have damaged ,Desired Settlement: I would like The Engine Builders to repair what they damaged and make it right after all that was spent to repair my brothers truck it is his only means of transportation and he needs his a/c to work so he can drive his truck after all that's why we paid $2890.25 in the first place and should not have to pay any more since it is not our fault the a/c line was damaged in the first place .

Response:

To start we finished his truck 7/3/15 on 7/3/15 around 2 or 3 we called customer to let him know he need a radiator no answer so we left a message. Message saying the radiator was full of sludge and that he needed a new one cost $200 so you know we are not even marking up the cost at all so we ordered a new one as no way we will install his old one as it probably was part of the reason his original engine overheated. While we were installing new radiator we received two 5 min messages with him cussing us out saying we are trying to rip him off by buying new radiator he says there is nothing wrong with his radiator and do not put a new one in. Well at $200 we are not ripping anyone off as we are not making nothing from it. When he got here we showed him the radiator and he agreed he needed a new one for him having to wait around while we finished it. It does take time to get radiator and install radiator and also fix other things wrong with his truck that had nothing to do with our work. ( 20 + year old truck). We also discovered his fan clutch was not working correctly and advised him to have it replaced he said he would. We drove his truck 20 - 30 miles after completeling the work the AC worked great. When he left the AC worked great. We did not hear from him again until Friday 7/24/15 he told us his AC quit working so we said bring it in let us look at it. He brought it in on Monday 7/27/15 we looked at it seen a split in the hose. Told him he needed a new hose ( 20 year old hose ) the rott and dry out form the inside out just like a tire over years. We did not damage his hose as it worked fine for three weeks after we did the work. We had nothing to do with his AC hose going bad ( 20 year old hose split from age ) after he left our shop 7/27/15 he called left another 5 min message on how we had better fix his AC and give him a rental car.Well after that we talked to him and asked him so when you left 7/3/15 your AC was working fine he said yes and that it has been working fine till now 3 weeks later 7/24/15 he said yes. I said well its a 20 + year old hose as the rest of his truck is 20 + years old parts are bound to go out had nothing to do with us. I told him a place that would fix his hose for under $50 and then bring it back to us and we would charge his AC back for him (A $75 value ) For free. As we always try to help out our customers. Well that deal is now off the table for trying to take advantage of us. I also can't believe the Revdex.com would allow someone to file a phony complaint like this. We didn't do anything to his hose so we are not responsible for it.

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

First of all when we picked up the truck on 7/3/2015 they had called me and left me a message saying it needed a radiator at which time I called them back an authorized it and they said it would be $200.00 dollars and that time I had no idea they had also called my brother who in turn left them 2 messages and had cussed them out . When we arrived there they were still working on the truck and [redacted] showed me the radiator and I agreed it was bad . When my brother arrive he and [redacted] began yelled started hollering and [redacted] pounded his desk and was angry at my brother . They apologized to each other an the 2 mechanics left in his truck with the windows down and test drove his truck for 10 minutes returned and we paid the bill and began to leave with me driving my brothers truck to check out the repairs . I rolled up the windows and turned on the air after we got to 67th Ave and the compressor never came on and hot air is all I had . I had to roll the windows down and we went home . I had to go to the hospital and my brother checked his truck and found that his a/c line was damaged . The reason it took so long to contact them was because I told him I would call them because they did not want to talk to him anymore . When he brought the truck in they saw the line was damaged and [redacted] told him he could take the line off and have it repaired and re-install it . My brother does not have the mechanical ability I do because I have 40 Years experience in the automotive industry and he was told the line was rotten . Now why would you have some one with no experience or tools take off a rotten line and have it repaired and re-install it ? When the line was good and the air was working great before the engine was replaced ! As for the claim of filling a false claim that's just not true !

This business has tried to fix my car 3 times and the car just broke down again.

I have no idea how Engine Builders will handle this, last time they tried to blame me for the engine, but it was not my fault, when they realized it, it took them over 6 weeks to get the car back and now a month later the car engine blows again...and I don't know how they will respond to the news that they can't fix cars... I just want to warn people to think twice before using this company..

Review: I had my engine replaced here at the engine builders approximately 12-2012 on my 2002 [redacted] 1500. Work seemed to be satisfactory. I had minor issues at least twice, and they responded to them with no problem.

However approximately *months ago vehicle started to miss real bad and had no power. (less than *000 miles since replacement) I called them and they requested I have the fuel injectors checked since I rarely drove that vehicle. My mechanic inspected ans said injectors were fine. worse problem, engine started to knock real bad. Towed vehicle to engine builders. They found a rocker valve or something came off causing severe internal damage. They replaced several key components to the motor. I was informed by them that it was probably caused by a bad fuel injector. I was initially told I needed to replace 2 injectors at my cost. I agreed to pay for parts and labor. When I went to pick up my truck, they told me that they only needed to replace one, that the others were fine. I asked them if it had another break in period or any special instructions. They told me no, but that they suggest I use a higher octane fuel. No problem. I drove my truck around for about a week, back and forth to work. Everything seemed fine. My daughter wanted to borrow my truck to go camping in [redacted]. I allowed her to take it since everything was supposedly resolved. That same day, she called me just before she made it to [redacted], saying truck lost power. She pulled over to investigate, didn't see/hear anything out of the norm. She proceeded again, and vehicle once again no power. Vehicle had to be towed back home. I towed it to engine builders a few days later. They told me it had no compression in number 4 ?? spark plug was burnt. They were going to further inspect. I called them yesterday, 7-18-2014 and was told it needed a new motor. Supposedly I didn't replace fuel injectors, which I was told were fine by them and engine isn't covered by fuel issue damage. I was told I needed to pay an additional 1900 to replace the motor which they repaired less than *00 miles, less than * weeks earlier. They tried to say they told me I needed a tuner.?? I dont recall anyone ever suggesting/telling me about a tuner. I don't know what a tuner is/does. My warranty is set to expire in 12-2014. I spoke with manager on this issue. The reasons wander back to they didn't check all the injectors, to they did and they were fine. To my fuel gauge isn't working properly. I don't have 1900 for another motor. even if I did, damage was not caused through any negligence of mine. I cant imagine what could have happened to blow the motor in less than *00 miles, other than mechanical failure. A little too late but I read reviews about this company, and it seems to be a common complaint. I would like someone to investigate this matter as soon as possible. Please inform me of findings. Im sure they feel they lost out when they repaired the motor * weeks ago, but that wasn't my negligence at that time either. Thank you.Desired Settlement: I just want my motor repaired/replaced as soon as possible with at least an extended 6 month warranty due to history with this company.

Response:

We installed a newly rebuilt engine in this vehicle and the owner picked it up from us on January 18, 2013. He returned Jan 23rd , 2013 with AC electrical problems. We found he had a blown fuse and replaced it. We found he had a bad fan relay which the vehicle owner stated he would take care of himself. His Power Steering Pressure Sensor clip was broken so with the owners approval we zip tied it. Our warranty covers mechanical failure of the actual long block itself and as such the time spent to search and repair these issues should have been charged to the customer however we did not.

He again returned when something had flown in thru the space caused by the high lift and damaged the cam sensor pigtail for which we again did not charge him for parts and labor.

On May 30, 2014 he called saying he had been in on a Saturday a couple weeks prior for a misfire. He says he was change the coil pack on #7 and if it didn’t clear up to change the injector. He drove home and parked it and stated that he doesn’t drive it all that much. When he changed the coil he drove it around the block and the miss was still there so he drove it around the corner to his mechanic who says it sounds like the #7 valve spring is broken or a rocker arm. States plugs look good but it has no power and as agreed he had it towed to us for check out.

Our tech John states it was a couple of Months previous not a couple weeks when the customer had stopped by with a misfire . He was advised to change the coil pack first and if it still had a miss to change the

fuel injectors as well. Its obvious that he kept on driving with the misfire. Our tech told him the cold air intake and aftermarket headers the customer had put on the truck causes it to naturally run slightly lean. ( Lean starts melting parts) Our tech advised him he needed to go back to a stock air filter and put a [redacted] on it. To correct the lean condition along with have the gear ratio’s done to accommodate for the

lift and tires before the motor was ruined. ( Wrong gear ratio way over works engine)

What we found was his #5 and 7’s spit out the rockers and trashed the lifters and cam. There was either fuel or coolant in #7 meaning it had hydro locked. causing the damage to the cylinders which is why we replaced the injector. A compression test was done and it proved to have no compression so we removed the Drivers side head, changed all lifters and 1 cam. All new sparks, injector a new oil filter, oil and coolant added as well. We had originally advised him he needed one maybe two fuel injectors and we would be getting both incase the second one was actually need. At the time only needed 1. We put it back together and took it for a 15 mile test drive. It ran out of gas during that drive and had to have someone from our shop take him the gas. The fuel gauge had read just over a ¼ tank of fuel so we did not put any additional fuel in as would be our custom had it been low. While on that drive it ran out of gas and another employee had to be pulled from the project He was on to go get gas and take it to him. After returning to the shop we found it had an engine code for an o2 Sensor which we replaced with the vehicle owners approval. We told him it ran out of gas on the test drive to which he stated it had never happened before. We advised him we feel his fuel sender may be intermittently working and to have it looked at. It was not until we got to the end of the job that we determined this repair should have not been done under the warranty as the fuel pump or fuel injector more than likely caused the rocker and lifter to fail and not a simple lifter failed. It hydro locked We felt it was not fair to tell him initially it would be covered then surprise him with a large bill for the repair. We again told him he needed to do a tuner and that his truck wasn’t geared for the oversize tires and high lift on his truck. When told about how it ran out of gas and that we felt the fuel sender was going out he said it had never done that before and would check it out.

More recently he called us and said his daughter had taken the truck on a trip and was just outside [redacted] when it lost power. She pulled over and waited awhile and when she started it back up it was fine so she continued on. 5 miles later it did it happened again so she pulled over and he had it towed home. A couple days later he went to use it and it had a misfire and check engine light. He had it towed to us.

This time it was a misfire on #4. #4 is located on the opposite side that we worked on the last time. We pulled the coil and moved it to a different cylinder. The miss did not follow the coil. We pulled the spark plug to do a compression check and found the spark plug was burnt. ( from running lean ) We camera’d the cylinder and the piston is burnt. There is no compression and has a possible burnt valve and now he needs a new motor.

The customer says we’d had it 3 weeks ago and he put less than 300 miles on it ( he actually put over 500 miles on it) and we say the injectors are good so he didn’t worry about it. He claims we never discussed a tuner with him or he would have done it and feels that this damage is no fault of his own.

These are his fuel injectors, and fuel pump. Fuel Injectors can go out at any time the sending unit controls the gauge but if the fuel pump is funky it cool fool the computer to thinking it was starving for fuel and control the fuel appropriately. We said his injectors were good and they were or else he wouldn’t have gone the 561 miles since it left our shop the 3 weeks prior.

Fuel injectors are electric they can be good one minute and bad the next. The computer controls the injectors also it can richen or lean out the injectors. Either condition would have triggered the check engine light and when cylinder started to get to lean check engine light would have most likely started flashing which means stop immediately. first off he knew he had problems he should not have let his daughter take the truck on a trip like that especially up 7 mile mountain very hard mountain for any vehicle to climb especially with a crew cab lifted truck with way oversized tires, with the wrong gear ratio in the axles for the tires being run that is under powered with a 4.7 engine. If she would have stopped when the light first came on and especially after lost power and had it towed probably would have been all right. ( would have just needed fuel Injector).

conclusion is no matter how long a vehicle is driven or an engine has ran an injector or any other electrical item can go bad at anytime. the only one who knows when they go bad is the driver and only the driver. If a vehicle is not running correctly it should not be driven until the problem is found. when truck was at our shop it was running fine but needed the tuner which he knew. We built the engine and installed it. We didn't build the truck around the engine so those parts still have the same miles on them that the original engine had. so off course any of those parts can go out at anytime without warning. Just as his original engine did. if it had been shut down instead of kept driving it. It would have been fine with a new injector. ( before melting the piston and spark plug) We have went beyond our job on this truck and have never charged him labor for the work we have done that didn't pertain to our engine. WE have spent many hours of work on his truck for free that wasn't under warranty. ( no other shop would have). We also offered him to replace the engine at less than our cost $1000 that is a discount of $1700 and he declined. We do our best and go beyond for our customers.

Thanks

Response:

We again set forth our position as stated in our first response and add that [redacted] refusal to accept our position based upon his stated reasons for rejection are nothing but his slanderous opinion. Based upon his prior admission to our shop manager that he doesn’t know much about engines we do not feel he is qualified to respond such as he did. We invite **

[redacted] to look at his original invoice in which he had stated that he wasn’t sure exactly what happened to his engine and that he thought the oil pump went out and caused internal damage. We ask him to recall the need of a new radiator which indicates the vehicle had gotten hot. We strongly advise and welcome him to take his vehicle to a credible, knowledgeable shop of his choosing, and have THEM give him an assessment based upon what they find and not just the side of the story he wants to present. We ask the particulars of when he put the lift on the vehicle and why the shop who did the lift not inform him that he needed to regear the ratio to accommodate the oversize tires and lift? Did he fail, yet again, to not “recall” being told he needed to do additional upgrades for proper usage and the outcome if he did not address the issue appropriately?

We also ask this customer to review his signed warranty with us (attached) that clearly states as well as was gone over with him that “ Continued operation of the vehicle once an issue has been detected will void warranty”. As well as further down “Damage caused by lack of proper maintenance as described in the vehicle’s original Maintenance Schedule/Owner’s Manual, failure to follow Maintenance Schedule intervals, or failure to use or maintain proper type and levels of fluid, fuel, oil and lubricants recommended in the Maintenance Schedule/Owner’s Manual or by The Engine Builders. Proof of proper maintenance is the owner’s responsibility. Keep all receipts and be prepared to make them available if questions arise about maintenance.” And “Damage as a result of inadequate fuel delivery or ignition system failure.”

Our decision to not warranty this engine was made solely on the facts he stated to us as to what happened with his daughter and our findings the piston was melted and no compression on the opposite side of the repair that had been done weeks prior. It certainly was not due to faulty mechanical work. It was solely due to his negligence in not following the instructions given him to replace the cold air intake to factory, adding a tuner, getting his gears redone to proper ratio and having his fuel delivery system checked for optimum performance. Again, the fuel injectors are electrical and his fuel delivery system has the original miles on it against the 4500 miles of our engine. Accessories wear and tear just like everything else and when you add in inadequate upgrades and inattention to the dash of a vehicle when it’s flashing a CEL, disaster is sure to follow. Additionally, everyone is given instructions and both our office and owner cell phone number to CALL US 24/7 in the event a issue arises. Calling someone who may or may not know the right thing to do can cause further damage. We did not learn of the problem or what he did about it until it was too late. There is no way we would have advised continued driving of this vehicle under those conditions.

We understand that people are quick to anger especially when something doesn’t go their way. We also understand that those that are unhappy squawk the loudest while those that are happy rarely set to the internet to post positive reviews of superior customer service. Both of these instances are highlighted by his oversight in posting positive feedback when we went above and beyond and did not charge him for parts or labor rates for repairs needed outside our warranty on * separate instances prior to his fuel problems. He was charged our cost for the parts and at less than our shop rate simply because we were not aware of the fuel delivery system failures. We pride ourselves on not gouging our customers like many shops do. In fact, he is one of a handful that we have had to void the warranty on and charge for repairs or replacement engines and believe me we don’t like to have to do so but when negligence and non-compliance on the customers part is evident we can not, nor should we be expected to, eat the cost of his actions.

The piston is melted. He needs a new engine. We offered to build him one at OUR COST of $1,000.00 plus injectors as needed strictly in the best interest of this customer. Beyond that, we will not pay anything to anyone for repairs that he rejected from us.

Review: I dont know where to start I never had to do this with any company I ever dealt with they could careless about customer appreciation and support at all... Our shop hours are Monday thru Friday 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. We are a business and as required by fire codes our doors must remain unlocked during business hours. The first and

subsequent times he has come to our shop he didn't knock on the door. he opened it and came right on in so we are a little confused why he would start knocking now. For the last months or so we have even had the door open all day. We have never refused a customer from seeing their vehicle at any time.

On 6/7/2014 I contacted The Engine Builders (TEB) regarding a problem with my 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.7 non high output engine.

The engine had overheated and there was now coolant flowing from the exhaust pipe. This was a sure sign of blown gaskets and since the engine has aluminum heads on a cast iron block head warpage was also a probability.

TEB offers free one way towing from anywhere in Arizona and agreed to pick up my vehicle in Bullhead City, AZ. I live in Laughlin, NV and so on the day of pick up I used my towing insurance to have the Jeep towed across the Colorado River to the pick up point. The TEB driver arrived at the pick up point on time and was very courteous.

My vehicle was at TEB for 6 working days. I went to Glendale to pick the Jeep up and the office girls were very nice as were the mechanics that spoke with me about what had been done to my vehicle.

The engine internals were all replaced and the heads were shaved to remove the warp.

The warranty requirements were explained to me and they were very simple (basically oil changes at specified mileage intervals).

I paid and left for Laughlin at about 4:45 p.m.

After driving only 16 miles the engine began to misfire and the check engine light came on blinking. Having no idea what was wrong or how bad it might be I immediately turned around and headed back to TEB.

When I got there the gate was open and one of the office girls and two mechanics were sitting outside just hanging out after work. They were extremely nice and concerned when I pulled in. The mechanic started the truck and said I am pretty sure I know what is wrong. He went and got the computer interface and told me that an ignition coil had failed. He told me that often happens when they are in a high heat situation as mine had been. He replace the bad coil with a used one they had and the Jeep immediately began running fine. He also took the time to explain why the check engine light was blinking instead of staying on and let me know that it was quite probable that more of the coils could fail in the future. He explained which auto parts to go to that would scan the car and tell me which coil had failed and showed me how simple they were to install. Of course they were not required to do any of this.

I thanked them asked the charge and they said not to worry about it and I headed to Laughlin. They Jeep ran perfect for the 200+ mile drive from Glendale and in fact seems to be running stronger, it had 116,989 miles on it when the work was done. I figure it is due to any loss of power due to wear at that mileage was corrected with the rebuild.

While my vehicle was there they also discovered the intake manifold was bad and replaced it and ran down a vacuum leak that was causing the cruise control to not work properly and replaced the bad piece of hose to fix that problem.

I am very happy with my experience with TEB; they did what they said they would do at the price they quoted me. The vehicle is performing perhaps better than before the engine blew. Additionally they were very kind to identify a problem and correct it after hours, saving me the expense of an overnight stay in Glendale for a five minute problem.

Hopefully I will not have to use them again (as it would mean another major engine failure), however I certainly would recommend them to anyone. Most importantly I would emphatically recommend them to anyone who's vehicle is in or can be moved to Arizona as the free towing anywhere in the state is a huge cost saver.

The only improvement I would suggest is that they get setup to accept credit or debit cards. The cash only policy requires a trip to the bank and in my case traveling by bus with a large amount of currency on my person. That is really a personal issue of mine and may not be a big deal to anyone else. It certainly does not preclude my recommending them as all you really need to do is plan ahead and their policy is explained clearly so it does not come as a surprise that they require cash.

Review: We paid the Engine builders 2882.73 to rebuild the engine in our truck. When we got it back nearly a month later the engine was knocking. we called and the said that was normal and that it should go away after the wear in period. They told us to put 1000 miles on it and call us back if it continues.shortly after that the truck broke down on the freeway and we had to have it towed. We contacted the Egine builders and told them what had happened and they said that they would have it towed to their shop and take a look at it but if the problem was not related to the work they performed they would charge us. We took the truck to the shop we us normally and they said that the distributor gears we ground off and their is something defineitly wrong with the Engine.we had our garage replace the the distributor. We took the truck back to the Engine Builders and they said it was a faulty distributor, which is something they charged us to replace originally. We had them look over the truck again, the egine was still knocking, and they told us to put some more miles on it. the next time we drove the truck the knocking had increased horribly in volume and was no longer driveable. we took it back to the Egine builders and after another three weeks they said they thought we had over-heated the truck.

after them looking at the engine for another two weeks they finally came back to us and said it would cost us another 1000.00 dollars to repair the truck.Desired Settlement: Honor their warranty, fix the truck and refund us the money it cost us for towing and replacement of the distributor.in a timely manor.

Response:

We are in receipt of the [redacted] complaint ID # [redacted] dated 08/15/13.The job was completed on May 17, 2013 at which time we had installed a 0 miles rebuilt engine into their 96 Chevy truck with 449k miles. They had taken it to a mechanic who told them the bearings in the camshaft were knocking and recommended engine replacement. During the initial consult they stated it had gotten hot but not overheated and that the thread on the distributor housing had broken and would need replaced and the cap was good. Also, the power steering pump or hoses, maybe both, would need replaced and to call with pricing. We confirmed replacement of the power steering pump and the pressure line as well as both motor mounts and transmission mount. All were prior approved by the customer. When the vehicle was picked up by [redacted] who works for Ms. [redacted], he was informed of the break in procedure, our warranty along with the clearly defined stipulation that overheating would void their warranty as well as if there were any problems they were to phone us immediately. He was given our owners business card which included his cell phone number with the instructions that if they had a problem after hours or on weekends he was to call that number. On 06/10/13, a Monday, [redacted] called the office stating that the they had been stopped at a gas station for a soda and it wouldn't start when they got back in. They had it towed to their place of business. We asked why he didn't call us when the event happened. He said they just went on ahead and had it towed in because there was a crew with it. We told him to bring us the truck and we'd check it out. He agreed. 2 days later, 06/12/13, he brought the vehicle to us after having taken the truck to their mechanic who replaced the distributor we'd purchased for them because the distributor gear had been eaten up. They requested that the new distributor and towing being reimbursed. Had they called us when they had the problem as instructed we would not have charged them to put another distributor on as it would have been under warranty with our vendor. They wanted us to determine why the distributor gear was eaten up and the source of knocking. It was not a knocking, maybe a tick from the lifters pumping up but not a knock. We agreed to look at it We replaced the gear with a steel drive gear AT NO CHARGE TO THEM and released it. A few days later it came back in with serious noise. We told them we'd look at it. We are a very busy shop and we got to their truck as soon as we could. At that point, we pulled the engine to see what the noise was. When we did we saw that the heat tabs were melted so it had been overheated. I called Ms [redacted] and said the tabs were melted which meant they had gotten the engine very hot. She said it didn't overheat and [redacted] who had been the one driving it when it stopped was put on the phone. He told me that he had been driving. The temp gauge showed 210 so he stopped to let it cool down. He let it run and it took awhile but went below 210 at which point he shut it down and added water to the overflow bottle. He said the only thing he can think of is that the sender is bad. The heat tabs melt at 255-260. We found more water in the radiator than coolant. The top gauge on their truck is 260. Their fan clutch was iffy. It would stick and then go, stick and then go. We asked them to come down and look at the engine so they could see the heat tabs. They did. We agreed to let them know what we found when we dismantled the engine. We dismantled it and found that it had gotten so hot that the pistons expanded scoring every cylinder wall. We called and informed them of our findings and [redacted] said ok so you'll call Robert and let him know how much the repairs will be and we agreed. We are fixing this engine at our cost. It will need a new block, pistons, rings, bearings, crank, etc. The cost will be $ 1,000.00. Our warranty mimics the manufacturer's warranty with the exception of a couple things. Don't overheat it. If there is a problem call us. When the truck was brought back they should have told us that it overheated. Instead we had to spend our time and money to pull the engine to look for a "noise" that ended up being piston slap from overheating. We spoke to our vendor on the distributor who has said they would warranty the part and 50% of the labor for them to replace the distributor. We will not pay for their towing. If you have any questions, please let us know at [redacted].[redacted]The Engine Builders

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below. When we first made contact with the Engine builders they told us they would go through and check out everything and if any else needed to be replaced it would be more. We agreed and even told them the things we thought were wrong. It was explicitly expressed to them that this was a work vehicle and we needed it to be dependable. Their work didn’t even last a month. We realize “stuff happens”, people make mistakes, normally reliable parts fail, etc.All we want is for the Engine Builders to honor their warranty. We did not overheat our vehicle as they claim we don’t believe we should have to pay the 1000.00 we would like Engine builders to fix or replace whatever went wrong with their original work and return to us our vehicle with a quality rebuilt motor we can depend on.Regards,[redacted]

Response:

We are in receipt of the secondary response for the [redacted] claim listed above. We take what the customer tells us as well as what we find when we pull it out and pull it apart to determine why that engine failed. On all jobs we visibly evaluate the cooling system which included Radiator, Fan Clutch, Upper and Lower Hoses. and Heater Hoses. We check belts. vacuum lines, and mounts. Accessories from the valve covers out are used from their engine compartment. Once an installation is complete we start the vehicle and bring it up to operating temperature. We take the vehicle out on 2 test drives with a total of approximately 50 miles. A scanner is attached to the computer and we drive by the scanner. All measures are taken to insure proper levels and accessory function. When they called us to discuss engine replacement we were told "it got hot but not overheated". It was indicated on the incoming paperwork and noted on the vehicle and would have been covered by our strict system check procedure even if they had not told us that upfront. At no time was there any indication that their fan clutch was inoperable nor did we suspect by our inspection or during the computer scanned test drive that it needed replacement. The radiator was good as were the hoses. There was no indication that the coolant temp sensor was faulty or the gauge incorrect. The scanned readings matched the gauge on the dash. When the vehicle was here for the distributor gear swap we checked all systems and it was test driven in the same manner as always. We found no cooling issues. Soon after we were told that they stopped for a drink and when they went to leave the truck would not start so they had it towed. Nothing was said to us about temperature nor the adding of water until we confronted them with the fact that the heat tabs were melted and that we had found there was more water in the radiator than coolant. She blamed that on us saying that we are the ones who didn't put enough coolant in. She passed the phone to her employee [redacted] who was the driver at the time of the event. It was not until then that we were advised it had "gotten hot but didn't overheat", that the temp gauge showed 210 so he stopped and let it run until the temp lowered which took awhile and that he only added a small Gatorade bottle of water to the reservoir tank and all he could think of was the sending unit was bad. Heat tabs do not lie and the manufacture states they do not melt until 255-260 degrees. The pistons swelled and scored the cylinders. A direct result of excessive heat. It was not caused by our workmanship. It was not caused by or perpetuated by any faulty internal parts. It was caused by their accessory components and the actions of their driver. I am attaching a copy of their signed warranty which states that continued operation of the vehicle once an issue has been detected will void the warranty and to not overheat, that doing so will void the warranty.Their warranty is void and we could charge them full price but we do care about our customers and have offered to repair the engine at our cost of $1,000.00. Any exterior accessories, such as fan clutch, will incur additional costs. We will not move forward on this project until the matter has been agreed upon. [redacted]The Engine Builders

Extremely negative experiences with this company.
After 37000 miles the rebuild they did failed, I brought my truck to have the heads or gaskets replaced. After a month and lies on 4 separate occasions I received my truck on a Friday night. Monday morning I brought it back for thesame condition blowing smoke and coolant out the tailpipe.it Sat in the yard of this shop for more than a week and they made no attempt to repair it.Icalled to ask status and was told it was being worked on and apart. I did not trust the owner any longer so I drove to the shop and found it still assembled and unworked on. I immediately asked for my keys and took my truck and informed the owner I would have my attorney collect my money back.
I was called immediately then received a text telling me to return to collect my refund. I was given my money back but lost several months of delay and my time and was lied to no less than five times and my truck was not repaired.
Do not trust this shop owner or the work this shop puts out.

This shop is great. I was ripped off by another mechanic and the Engine Builders came to my rescue. They towed my truck to the shop for free, researched the other mechanic to help my court case against him, gave me a lower price than was advertised for rebuiling my engine, and waived the storage fee for holding my truck until I could regain the cash lost to the other mechanic. This is a great family-owned business and they've gained my trust. Thank you [redacted] and [redacted]!

My truck broke down near flagstaff while vacationing. Called the engine builders next day they towed it clear to their shop in glendale for free. Saved me a few hundred right there alone. They told me it would be up to two weeks. 7 days later I get a call that its ready quote price $2690 and believe it or not no price change drove away for the quoted price $2690. Very very happy been about 4 months now and still running awesome. Thanks Engine Builders

The Engine Builders were referred to me from a friend who was very pleased with the work they did for him. So I called them they towed my F150 to there shop about a week later they called to say it was done. Very pleased with there work and very fast and the price was great and best of all no hidden fees. what they quoted me is what I paid. Thanks Engine Builders for doing a great job

The issues I posted a review about with engine builders has been resolved after talking with the owner. He was very concerned about the problem and willing to fix it. I wish I had talked to him first. Good honest guy. Good shop to go to.

Review: My truck has been at the engine builders for 11 weeks and I feel like I'm being taken advantage of. I dropped off my truck middle of July, five weeks later my truck is finished I pick it up on a Saturday, on my drive home I pick up a fuel injector cleaner you put in the gas tank I full my truck up with twenty gallons of fuel, I do not drive it the rest of the night till Sunday ran a few errands and when I return home there is a oil leak fearing to void my warranty I wait till Monday to get it back to the engine builders, Monday I go to the engine builders and they do fix my leak valve covers were not torqued issue resolved but I tell the tech repairing my oil leak the issue with a misfire on cruise and he expressed a issue with my injectors, I return to work to test my injectors to known good injectors with ACDELCO injector no change in performance. Monday night while at work I replace my fuel filter cause my truck sat one month before taking it to the engine builders, my pickup started to pull in to a parking spot and I changed my uniform, I can back out and my truck would not start I figured it was because my starter was not spinning fast enough to crank the engine at enough rpms to start so I install a new starter could not get started I checked the injectors were pulsing as normal on start a dust storm came in could not continue trying to start because it was after hours. I returned Tuesday morning and continued trying to diagnose why a no start condition I had spark fuel and I would not remove spark plug to perform compression test. Finally fed up I called my insurance had my truck towed to the engine builders and explained all repairs and test results and took one additional week for the engine builders to return my call about the warranty repair on my truck. From then on I've only had excuses on why my truck is another week out from being returned I'm currently on the 11th week my truck has been at this repair facility and for reference my truck was returned after repair on August 24 and returned to the engine builders on August 27 and was paid in full on the 24th of August and only had truck for three daysDesired Settlement: I want my truck back repaired and running properly or want it towed to a [redacted]ealer and repaired at the expense of the engine builders or return my truck in current condition ( with all parts) and want a complete refund

Response:

When the customer came to our shop we told him that we were a few weeks out before completion. He said the truck had been sitting for several months and he wasn't in a big rush so it wasn't a problem so we towed the truck to our shop on 7/17/13

His original engine had spun main bearings and a cracked head. We had to locate a good head as well as a block because the holes he had drilled into it had broken off starter bolts stuck in them.

We installed the new motor and found a charging system problem. We pulled the Alternator and testing at O'Reilly's confirmed it was bad. He thought his might still be under warranty but it wasn't. He said he didn't have the money for an alternator so he'd have to hold off until his next payday to come get his truck. We're a family run business and care about our customers. We agreed to pay for the alternator.

He had installed the wrong starter and we didn't have one here to give him so we centered and tightened his as best we could so he could take it. Once it was running we saw that his injectors weren't spraying right. When injectors sit for months like his did the fuel tends to dry inside them and can plug them up. We took it on a 40 mile test drive. It ran great and there were no issues. When he picked it up we suggested to him that since money was an issue that he could try filling the tank with a premium fuel and add a quart of acetone.

He brought it by to have us check on a leak and told us that it ran great and he was very pleased with the motor and the clean installation.

On 8/27 he called to say it he put a new starter on because it wouldn't start. He had also put a fuel additive in the gas tank and changed the fuel filter. He said there was no cranking rhythm so he fooled with the timing but couldn't get it and had a couple of guys at his work tried for a couple of hours with no luck so he was having it towed back.

When it got here we checked the fluids and had to reset the timing and after pumping the gas pedal a few times it started. When we unplugged the PCV breather hoses and there was massive blow by.

We immediately had it towed it to an independent shop for their evaluation. They pulled the motor and dismantled it. The valves were good and heads were good but the oil was contaminated by a foreign matter that had come in through the throttle body and had severely scored cylinders 4 & 6.

We talked to the customer who again said all he did was the fuel filter, the starter and the fuel additive. We asked was it possible that one of the guys he'd let work on it could have without his knowing it. We know for a fact that something came in through that intake and we don't care what it was we need to know. He maintained that nothing else had been done.

We told him we'd look at it ourselves when it got brought back over to us.

By the time it got here one of our installers had been hospitalized with both arms, and a broken leg. Another left for other employment and our builder was out for a few days. Unfortunately it caused delays for all of our customers and we got way behind.

He came in and spoke to us and we again discussed what had happened with no new information. This truck left us in great running condition which he himself said when he came to have us look at the drip. When we told him about our situation he said he was in the business himself and understood and was patient with us.

Last week he came by and said that his girlfriend, family and friends wanted him to come here and be nasty about it but he had a hard time with that because he's that's not how he is. He just wanted a direct answer and he'd deal with whatever it was. Fair enough.

That afternoon we asked our new tech do an evaluation on a motor to see what he thought had happened. He checked the valves. The heads are good but 2 cylinders had big scratches and grooved. Piston were new and bored to 30 over with 30 over pistons. The intake clean.

What we think happened is something has been poured down through the throttle body while attempting to clean the injectors and went into the engine and causing the damage to the block.

The next day this complaint comes in saying he'd done the injectors. These injectors have heavy residue on them which tells us they have never been touched. What he told us is not on the complaint. In fact, when he called us after we got the complaint he denied he did anything to the injectors.

He needs to come tell us exactly what happened before a decision is made.

Review: Approximately 7 weeks ago I returned my vehicle to this repair facility to honor warranty work for a faulty engine. My issue is with the non-timely repair of this vehicle and the company's refusal to act on the repairs. I have called the owner ([redacted]) weekly for the status of my vehicle and the answer continues to be "employee issues" on his part. During several of the conversations I have been told that my vehicle will be completed "next week" and that "it's next on the list to come in fot the repair." I went to the shop last week to confront Greg in person, he assured me that my vehicle will be repaired and done next week (which is this week, and it is now Friday) and to date have heard nothing from him. The shop continues to do business and my vehicle continues to sit in his back lot unattended. I have been patient for quite some time, the vehicle in question is a primary family vehicle. I have been borrowing another family members car in it's place.Desired Settlement: Fix the issue as stated in the warranty and return my vehicle to service!

Replaced a 2000 Dodge Durango engine with a rebuilt one from The Engine Builders in May 2013. It's now December and it's been awesome. Runs strong, idles great.

I thought it was an excellent deal and would actually consider looking for a vehicle with a bad engine for a cheap price and have them put one in.

RE: Complaint ID [redacted]

We first had contact with the vehicle in November 2012. During our build process we found that his motor mount was broken and the other not long behind it. We do not believe in selling stuff to people that they don’t need and won’t without first calling the customer with details for approval. Soon after he picked his vehicle up he called angry saying we did not put the bolts in the mount. We knew we had so agreed to stop by his house on our way to Tucson and check it. We agreed to return the following day and replace the bolt. 4 months later he was angry that there was ticking and smoke coming from his exhaust. We went to Casa Grande and drove his vehicle back. We found exhaust leaks and replaced both drives and passenger sides exhaust manifold gaskets. The exhaust gasket is not included in the warranty, however, we replaced them at no charge to the vehicle owner. This vehicle has a fuel management system which turns on and off lifters and we replaced one of each the active and non active lifters. There was still an occasional tick that was came and went. We were unable to track it down. The only way would have been to tear the engine apart and even then it may not have been found so the only solution would be to build another engine and offered to do so if his issue didn’t resolve. At this time the customer told us he had a new transmission put in it was leaking from the seal or converter. A couple months later he calls us very angry and when I became frustrated and angry by how he was treating me I told him Hey I’m trying to help you then he screamed [redacted] You [redacted] and hung up on me. They wanted a rental car for the time we had his truck and when told no he pulled the plug on the swap and said he’d just take us to court. We were trying to do our part only to be met with hostility, anger, threats and intimidation. A couple weeks later they called to schedule the swap and we did so. There have been no issues reported until now.

He states that [redacted] said the mounts had never been changed and advised us of the damage to the power steering system and insists we are responsible for the cost and repair of his damaged parts. We agreed to tow the vehicle in for our own inspection.

The damage to the motor mount and subsequent damage to the power steering rack was not caused as is his claim, by faulty work. What we did find is the Suspension Arm on the drivers side, the same side as the mount, is broken, it’s most likely cause being the truck has a high lift and oversized tires. Lifts and tires such as his creates additional stress to the suspension and wears everything out faster. The mounts carry a limited lifetime warranty, however it is only covered if it is a failure of the actual mount, not damage caused by an outside source such as the broken suspension. They will not cover it and neither are we. An independent shop has assessed this vehicle and have agreed to our findings as well as the cause and effect of the damage. A copy of their report as well as an estimate for repair is on file. Pictures of the broken suspension are also on file.

Every conversation with the vehicle owner is loud, mean, and abusive. Reasonable discussion is impossible as he can’t see through his natural hostility to a resolution.

We have gone above and beyond to help this customer just as we have for all of our customers. We have accrued costs in the interest of customer satisfaction and have endured continual abusive behavior. Should there be internal mechanical failure of this long block during the remainder of the warranty period we will be more than happy to do our part. We will not be held responsible for the current damages and will not absorb any costs of such.

As always, contacts us if further information is needed.

Tell us why here...Engine Builders Re Mr. [redacted] We built his Engine on 04/16/2013 a year and half later not right away as he said. He brought it in for a misfire and turned out to be a coil pack in cylinder #2. He has no oil in cooling system. He scraped with his fingernail on inside of radiator and say that's oil when all the radiator develops is brown residue, he also replaced the radiator and put wrong coolant in it. He used conventional antifreeze when it should have extended life dexcool. When using conventional antifreeze electrolyses will happen. He came in on 06/25/2014 which was the second time and was determined to be a bad coil. He brought it back 01/05/2015 he said he had oil in radiator (There was no oil in radiator) and he also says he was burning excessive oil (6 quarts) on his way to [redacted]. He gave us his permission to drive his truck, we drove it around 100 miles and didn't burn a bit, had no leaks, no oil in radiator. If there would to be oil in radiator it would definitely be water in engine oil which it wasn't. We always try to help our customers. He picked up on 01/23/2015. We have also told Mr. [redacted] since day one, to get rid of his aftermarket air cleaner. you can see right through them,it doesn't block dirt and can wear cylinder wall. He stated he likes the look of it and has no plans on changing it. On 04/13/2015 he calls yelling and screaming stating his truck is losing oil and we broke his oil tube. I stated that if we broke his tube, why didn't he call us in January when he picked it up? He stated he hasn't opened his hood since he picked it up. I said.. You say your truck is burning oil 6 quarts in 100 miles and in 4 months you didn't open your hood? Doesn't make sense to me. He brought it back, we checked it at that point Mr. [redacted] broke his oil tube. He picked up on 04/27/2015, he burned his tires out of here making a scene and did 2 tire marks pretty deep. . Greg P[redacted](Owner of The Engine Builders) went to his house to talk to him. Greg checked his oil and was full. Mr. [redacted] says he hasn't opened his hood in 4 months and no oil added, so it's not burning oil as he thinks. Even though his warranty is over in miles and date, while at his house he tried telling me we scratched up his truck, we had it parked in the same spot as it was dropped off. We have had over 1,000 cars in lot and yet have we had any cars with scratches specially all over. He then started yelling at me when his wife came out so I started to leave as I'm walking away Mr. [redacted] hit me in the back, I turned my head and said don't do that again. I got into my truck and he started yelling that if I didn't give him a new engine he will ruin my business. He's lucky I didn't press assault charges. So to conclude he did this to a shop prior to us. He claimed he had problems when warranty was almost up. Doing the same with us. Truck is not burning oil, no oil in radiator or exhaust, he also stated he hasn't opened hood from 01/23/15 to 04/13/2015 and was still full of oil and to this date yeti have seen a plug fouled from his engine. He also replaced his radiator a while after we did engine did he over heat it? Mr. [redacted] also told Greg the truck runs great.

[redacted] and his staff at Engine Builders went above and beyond to help me with my rebuilding my engine.
