The Star Ledger Reviews (35)

Review: I had been a 20+year subscriber to the Star Ledger for my home delivery of the Sunday paper. This summer after constant problems with not receiving the newspaper. I cancelled my subscription

In November, I received an email with a special subscription price for 16 weeks for Thursday and Sunday paper at 2.99/week. I decided to give the Star Ledger another try. My American Express card was billed a total of $11.96 for the month on November 19,2015 . I was to receive the newspaper every Thursday and Sunday. One week I would receive the paper on Sunday and not Thursday and vise versa. I called and notified the Star Ledger each and every time I did not receive the paper. Out of the 4 weeks, I received the paper 4 out of 8 times. I cancelled the paper and requested a refund of half the charge. I have called numerous times to customer service and always get the same answer. "I have put in for your refund". I have been very patient and tolerant .I believe I am due a refund of 5.98. I know this is a very small amount, but it is more the principle. Star Ledger is billing for their paper and not providing their customers with the goods they are paying for.Desired Settlement: Refund of 5.98 Thanks

Response:

I received my check from Star, thank you

Review: The Star Ledger does not consistently deliver the newspaper (I have a Thursday through Sunday subscription) that I was required to pay for in advance. Invariably, I have to call about a missed delivery almost every other week. The 7/13 Sunday Star Ledger was not delivered until I called to complain and even then it did not show up until after 2:00pm. The delivery problems cannot be attributed to bad weather or any other act of nature.Desired Settlement: First, I want the delivery service that I paid for to be consistently provided. Second, I want the subscription extended to cover missed deliveries and to compensate for the inconveniences that I repeated experience.

Review: I signed up for Star Ledger several weeks ago and I was told the delivery for the Thursday paper is by 6:30, and Sunday by 7:00 am. The paper arrives approximately 9:15 on Thursday and Sunday by 10:30 am. I contacted customer service several times and they stated they would send an email to the Field supervisor to request for the carrier, [redacted] I believe his name is, to delivery on time. I also requested to speak his supervisor and never received a call, nor has the problem been corrected. The Sunday paper last week was delivered by another individual and it was huge, with circulars and coupons. I have never received the paper like this. The carrier is not including all the circulars/coupons or not at all in the paper and I am paying for this. When I received this paper, I called to cancel service for the second time, the first time, I was advised I would have a different carrier. Friday, the 12th, I was running late for work and saw the same carrier deliver the paper to my neighbor. I was lied to by customer service in order not to cancel my service. I called again and spoke with [redacted], the supervisor on the floor. [redacted] was very helpful and sent an email as well as register my complaint. Today, Sunday, I received my paper late again and had "no" circulars nor coupons. I called [redacted] today and she was very embarrassed and cancelled my service for me. By not providing on time service and complete paper, basically the Star Ledger is taking money they are not entitled to. The poor service I am receiving is a reflection on the Star Ledger, not the carrier, because they are condoning this behavior.Desired Settlement: I am requesting for the Corporate office to acknowledge my dispute and correct the problem, permanently replace the carrier and remove him from my route. Replace him with an individual that takes pride in their work and delivers on time. There are many people out there that really need work and will be grateful for the opportunity. I would also like to resume delivery service again, once there is a new carrier.

Review: On numerous occasions, too many to count, The Star Ledger has delivered free copies of their newspaper to my house, and each and every time I have called them to tell them I do not wish to receive a complimentary copy, and each time they have said they will not deliver it to me again. However, it keeps happening, and each time I call back, they say it will stop. The most recent time this happened was last weekend, and I called to complain, they said it wouldn't happen again, but today, March 29, it happened again. On their system, it is marked that I do not wish to receive it, but I keep getting it delivered. This is nothing but a major nuisance, and I wish it to stop.Desired Settlement: No more deliveries of their newspaper.

Review: I've had the Star-Ledger delivered to my home for over 30 years. Over that time period, they always credited for the time period when I was on vacation (vacation stop). Suddenly, about 6 weeks ago, they changed their policy and said, since the newspaper is available online, they will no longer offer credit for vacation stops.

1. They now publish this policy for new home delivery subscribers, but I never agreed to this new policy when I subscribed to The, Star-Ledger, and it was not the policy for the many years when I had the paper delivered..

2. While on vacation, there were/will be many days when the internet was/will not be available to me, so I could not have/will not be able to read the newspaper even if I wanted to try to read it online.

3. My eyes are not so great, so trying to read it online would be difficult, especially if I had to try to read it using a phone.

4. I like to physically read a newspaper while I eat meals, which would be difficult to do online while sitting in a restaurant. The same would apply while travelling in an airplane.

5. I tend to purchase physical copies of newspapers while travelling (sometimes, even The Star-Ledger. Thus, I was/would be charged twice for reading a newspaper.Desired Settlement: Credit account for recent vacation stop (for early February) and continue to offer billing adjustments for future vacation stops.

Review: Previously had a subscription with star ledger set up through automatic payment through my bank. I no longer have a subscription, discontinued service a while ago (don't remember how long ago maybe 8-12 months ago). In April of 2015, I received my bank statement and noticed that the star ledger deducted $83.40 from my bank account on 4 3 15 and 4 16 15. For a total of $176.80. These charges were not authorized by me. I called the star ledger and they stated that the money was taken from my account in error. I was told to fax a copy of my bank statement to them and that they would credit my account for the error. I had my bank to fax a copy of my statement to the number that I was given on 5 16 15. I did not receive a credit from Star Ledger. I ended up filing a dispute with my bank and they gave me a credit back to my account for the $176.80. Upon reviewing my bank statement today for the month of July I noticed that once again there are 2 withdrawals from my account from the Star Ledger. I have not authorized these charges and I am upset that they are once again taking money from my account without my permission. The withdrawals took place on 7 9 15 for $83.40 and 7 29 15 for $83.40. Once again a total of $176.80 has been withdrawn from my account without my permission. I would like for these withdrawals to stop once and for all. I have once again filed a dispute with my bank for these charges taken from my account without my permission.Desired Settlement: I would like my money back, I would like for the unauthorized withdrawals to stop and to receive some sort of additional compensation for my aggravation, and inconvenience for not having access to my money due to their unauthorized withdrawals from my account on 4 separate occasions.

Review: I was shopping at y local ShopRite store located at [redacted] on March 15, 2015, I was approached by a Star Ledger sales associate as Star Ledger was having an on site promotion. I opted in to the promotion and my debit card was charged $11.99. As it stand today, April 8, 2015, I have yet to receive any delivery. I have called and made several complaints with the customer service representatives as well as contacted my financial institution to file a dispute.Desired Settlement: I would like my funds to be returned to the appropriate account in which it came.

Review: I signed up for a Star Ledger Subscriptionon 12/14/14 for weekend delivery which includes Thurs, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I did not receive the issues for Thursday 12/18 and Friday 12/19. On 12/19 I called to called due to failed service. I was told they would credit the price paid of $11.99 but they were going to charge me a $20 fee for cancelling. They claimed it was "in the contract". I spoke to a mangager named [redacted] and pointed out that the "contract" is now VOID as the Star Ledger did not hold up their end. Therefore they could not charge me the $20.00. She insisted that they would. I did NOT authorized this $20.00 charge and it is illegal for them to steal this money from my back account4Desired Settlement: Refund $31.99 ... $11.99 paid for subscription that was never delivered plus the $20.00 unauthorized debit card charge for cancellation fee.

Review: While food shopping, I was solicited and advised by a Star Ledger representative that I would get a $25 gift card if I signed up for a subscription with them. The subscription was $20 a month. He advised me that I can cancel at the end of the month, which he quickly circled on the paper, but the fine print stated that you must stay with them for 12 weeks or get charged $30 for early termination. He was misleading and unprofessional and when I went to cancel the rep on the phone could care less about fixing the problem. Also, the paper was suppose to be delivered to my porch and it was always left at the end of the driveway and front page was always ripped up because of the rubber band.Desired Settlement: I would like the $20 fee they charged me for canceling returned because of the miss representation of the contract.

Response:

We have reviewed Mr. [redacted] account and will certainly investigate his claim of misrepresentation during his purchase of The Star-Ledger. Mr. [redacted] contacted our Customer Service Department on 8/7/13 and as a courtesy, we have not charged a fee for his early cancellation of his subscription. Mr. [redacted] was charged for the delivery of the newspaper for the period of 7/10/13 through 9/7/13 and has cancelled his subscription effective 9/8/13. Please feel free to contact me should you have any further questions.

Sincerely,

Review: I signed up to receive the Star Ledger for 3 months at the introductory rate of $11.99 per month. I made sure to call and cancel before the 3 months was over because I did not want to pay the higher rate after the 3 months. I received a bill from the Star Ledger for the delivery of 2 newspapers after my subscription ended. It was $4 and change. I did not want any newspapers after my subscription ended, I did not ask them to deliver these newspapers and I don't believe that I received them at all. I want them to stop billing me for these newspapers that I did not want and did not ask them to deliver. I sent them a note attached to the invoice I received and they have not taken it off my account. How dare they insist on delivering newspapers after my subscription ended and then bill me for these newspapers I didn't want? I called to cancel my subscription because I didn't want to receive the newspapers any more.Desired Settlement: I want the Star Ledger to adjust my bill so that I do not owe them anything for newspapers they claim were delivered to me after my subscription ended.

Review: My brother, [redacted] passed away June 25, 2014. I placed a obituary (was hand delivered to the funeral director, as he requested).

At no time was the fee associated with the obituary disclosed. I received a charge on my credit card for $904.00 (less a credit of $10.00) from the Newark Star Ledger.

They claim their fee is $10.00 per line. I only learned this after calling the Newark Star Ledger. Their so called "lines" on the obituary section are 3-5 words per line! I feel this exorbitant fee is abusive and allows them to take advantage of people when they are most vulnerable. At no time, did the funeral director at [redacted] in [redacted], or anyone from the Newark Star Ledger disclose fees associated with placing a obituary.

I am certainly willing to pay a "fair" amount for my brother's obituary but NOT $894.00! The Newark Star Ledger has caused undue stress and anxiety to our grieving family.

Their idea of a line, which again is 3-5 words is unfair and unjust.

I hope the Revdex.com discusses how funeral directors and the Newark Star Ledger may better serve both their readers and clients in the future.

Kindly contact me with your findings.

Thank you for your attention to this unfortunate matter. [redacted]Desired Settlement: 1. At least 50percent adjustment in the bill

2. Policy which would require newspaper/funeral directors to advise what the charge "for 3-5 words per line" obituary will cost!

Review: I want to file a complaint against the NJ Star Ledger newspaper. I cancelled

my subscription months ago. Since then, they have called me numerous times

trying to offer me new subscriptions, despite me telling them is was no

longer interested, asking them to no longer call my house and remove me from

all future call list. Next they started sending me paper mail telling me I

had "won" a free subscription. I called them and told them I was not

interested and refrain from all future communications. I am now receiving

newspaper delivered to my doorstep at least the past two weeks. I feel

harassed and frustrated that my wishes as a consumer to end my subscription

will not be respected.Desired Settlement: I would appreciate any support and assistance you

could bring in resolving this situation, by no longer contacting me in

anyway and no longer delivering another paper to my home.

Review: There was this sales rep in the roselle Shoprite (on 1st Ave) who was giving out $20 gift certificates and all you had to do was a one time payment of $11.99 and you would get a month's worth of newspapers with coupons to save. Well I wasn't interested in the newspaper as I never bother with them but I was happy to get the $20.00 gift card. I told the lady that I didn't really want the service but I wanted the card... well she said it was only binding for the month and after that I would get a call from the company to confirm if I wanted to continue the service or not. Well in August they charged me as well as September. So I called them this morning and they were apologizing for the missunderstanding. The first guy I spoke with said that if I canceled today the company would have to charge me back for the gift card. Anyway he transfered me to his suppervisor who said pretty much the same thing but when she looked at my account she said they can only reverse what they charged me this morning 9/8/15. I asked her to cancel my service COMPLETELY and that I was in no agreement with them. I asked her for a confirmation and she said all she could give me was her name and ID, she is [redacted] and her ID is [redacted]Desired Settlement: They need to stop stealing from people and missleading them into thinking one thing but actually doing something totally different from what was promised! The lady told me it was a one month thing.

Review: On a weekly basis I receive the "Star Ledger Extra" in my mailbox. I do not wish to receive this newspaper. I have contacted customer service on 2 occasions (most recently on 7/30/2015) asking if I can be removed from the mailing list. In both cases I have been told yes I can and will be removed from the mailing list, however I continue to receive these mailings.Desired Settlement: I would like to stop receiving the "Star Ledger Extra".

Review: On September 17, 2015, there was a promotion to help a cause at [redacted] in Carteret, NJ where they offered a gift card for $15.99 and we would save $4.00 for shopping. We were never told about a three month subscription. In October I noticed another charge for $15.99. On October 20, 2015, I called customer service (spoke to [redacted]) and explained to the rep that I never agreed to a subscription, nor have a ever received a paper from Star Ledger and asked for a refund. She informed me I would receive a refund within three days. As of today, I have yet to receive the refund and called customer service again. The first rep was extremely rude, put me on hold for a supervisor and no one ever answered. I called back spoke to [redacted] who then informed me that I would still be charged $15.99 for cancelling the subscription before the three month term. I advised her that I never received a paper so why should I be charged. She stated they didn't know I didn't receive the papers because I never called to inform them. I didn't know I was signed into a subscription nor have I signed a "contract", I only received a gift card. Then she said I would be charged for the gift card even though I paid for it on September 17, 2015.Desired Settlement: I just want a refund and I do not want any further charges to my account. I did not authorize these charges and any future charges from this company will be considered fraudulent and I will report it as so.
