Complaint

Carfax offered 5 VIN and unlimited license plate reports. They don't clearly tell you it's only for 60 days. It's only in a separate pop up window with lots of legal fine print that they list the 60 days. I'm very mad about this deception. Unfortunately they don't list any contact information on...

This is what I was told by a CarFax rep over a week ago. I've heard nothing from them since then. Furthermore, I was also told that all they will do is verify that my vehicle is the one on the police report, we are then on our own to have it fixed.  It is unacceptable that CarFax can publish such damaging and broadly used data without either verifying its accuracy up front or at least proving good customer service to have it resolved quickly and completely. Their inaccurate report is costing me $3000 in lower trade in value on my vehicle.

The CARFAX Report would have stated that no accidents were reported to CARFAX at that time, that not all information is reported to CARFAX, and that new information from new sources will result in the change the CARFAX Report.  Therefore, CARFAX does not offer compensation when prior accidents...

I am rejecting this response because:
This is the first I'm hearing that the police report was received by Carfax and that the information was "verified."  Previously I was told that the police report was being ordered and that I would get a copy of it to pursue from there. This just furthers my point that Carfax has been impossibly difficult to deal with during this entire fiasco. And I still find it unacceptable that Carfax can report incorrect information and then claim no liability in getting it fully resolved.

I am rejecting this response because: I am not a business. I am an individual. I purchased a car actually one of five cars I was looking at, and I bought this car from a dealer. That why I choose to purchase the 5 report. Again I am not a business. I do not understand why carfax is saying that.  It is not true what carfax is stating. I wanted to see the reports beforehand to make a better decision. I sought carfax would be the way to do that. As it turns out carfax is not and now just playing with me. Very disappointing. I either want my money back or the 2 remaining carfax reports, at least the report for the car I bought. Thank You.

I am rejecting this response because:While I agree with CARFAX's assessment that they did inform me, in the absolute strictest legal sense, there is still a huge problem here. Yes, I agree that their collective butts are covered by their legal jargon. There is indeed plenty enough words in the contract and on the website to say that I SHOULD have known what I purchased. However, when numerous people have been duped into believing they are buying something other than what they are buying, it's obvious there is a problem. CARFAX preys on the psychology of the buyer. If I am NOT the only person who has interpreted their website and advertisements this way, then there is indeed a noticeable, and potentially measurable effect on potential customers. If this measurable effect translates to sales, and sales that would have otherwise been lost had the consumers more fully understood what they were purchasing, this can be reasonably asserted to be an unethical business practice. Unfortunately, the metrics needed to make such assessment are outside my ability to quanitfy; but, anecdotally it appears there are many people who have been confused by the way the CARFAX unlimited product is marketed. Everything from font choice, type size, and word order, as well as imagery layout suggests a strong bias towards implying that VIN searches are CARFAX's primary service they sell. I also feel that a random sampling of potential customers would illicit an agreement. Furthermore, I think if CARFAX submitted their marketing materials to marketing programs in universities, they would likely agree the content heavily emphasizes the VIN search capability. My complaint stands, CARFAX is knowingly conducting a fraudulent form of business. They are indeed covered LEGALLY, but it does not cover them ETHICALLY. As soon as my subscription ends I will fully terminate my relationship with CARFAX and encourage others to do the same.

Financial loss, leverage and choice were lost. Your website collected the files. I dont care who you get your information from or how, your companies report was false and created consumer loss and harm. I am moving forward with legal action to recover the estimated damanges as the trade has already occurred and the best opportunity was lost.

With billions of vehicle history records reported from over 100,000 sources, CARFAX is a great resource for used vehicle history information and we are proud to help millions of consumers every year.  CARFAX does not have the complete history of every vehicle, which is states on our website.  Every CARFAX Reports states that it only includes what has been reported to CARFAX at that moment and that not all information, including problems, is reported.

concludes that the 04/11/2014 damage record is correct so we cannot remove it from the CARFAX Report, I'm sorry! Please note that there is a source, but we are not able to release their information due to contractual obligations with them, so that is why their information is not displayed on the CARFAX Report, I'm sorry!
