This customer called us after installing his own hot water heater in a rental property. Our technician looked at his problem, offered him a solution and quoted the price upfront before any work was done. After the customer agreed to the price and signed for the work suggested, the technician...

performed the repair.
As always with Curtis Total Service we quote the price for repair upfront before any work is completed. This allows our customers to make a buying decision before the work gets completed. Thanks.

On 1/12/2016 this customer called our office and made arrangements for us to go to her home and perform a drain cleaning. We told her upfront that she needed to be there to sign for any work to be performed. She told us that her daughter was 20 years old and had her permission to sign...

for her and approve any work to be done. When our technicians arrived they looked at he job, quoted her a price to snake the line from the toilet in the home. The second task charge on the invoice was to pull and reset the toilet that needed to be remeoved to gain access to the sewer line. This was explained to both the daughter and the owner over the phone. The owner then approved the work, gave a credit card over he phone and we proceeded to set up the equipment to snake the line. As the technicians looked under the mobil home further, they noticed an access point that was very difficult to use, however would eliminate the need to remove the toilet to perform the work. The men then told the daughter that they could do the work from below, but since it was then a two man job they would charge her for a different task. The paperwork should have been changed at that point and our technician should have wrote in the correct task for clearing a line level 3 which requires two men to do the job. This would have increased the price of her job another $325.00 but the technician went to the daughter and said dont worry about it, I will just keep the $265.00 charge since the other technician was riding with me today. This will save you some money, and we wont disturb your bathroom. The daughter said ok to the suggestion and we performed the work. The line was opened up and we told her that she has an apparent belly in the line that needs to be fixed. We never even quoted them that repair, the sewer line was hanging under the trailer due to the old pipe straps falling out over the years. The pipes were also old abs type pipes that were not in good condition. Our technicians put up some pipe straps to help at no charge, but informed her that she needed to replace the old pipes and that would be more money, the customer had no interest in spending more money.   I understand that our technician should have rewritten our invoice and not worked off of trust. For that reason I am willing to refund the $265.00 that was written up for the pull and reset of the toilet, however we performed the work  and cleared the line and told the customer she would still have problems unless she fixed the old pipes. She declined to even have us quote any prices on that work. She also is not telling the truth in her statements. I am submitting a copy of my invoice so you can see what she was charged for and see the original scope of work. Thanks.

This customer was made aware of the nitrogen test, he and his wife both agreed to have the work done, she signed the contract, and initialed it where it clearly stated that there would be additional charges to refill or go any further. This complaint is closed.

Exceptional service from the moment I called until the moment the plumber from Curtis Total Service left. He was very thorough in explaining things, diagnosing the issues, and recommending services that would be required. Unfortunately the problem was beyond repair for today, but I look forward to working with Curtis Total Service again to resolve the issues. Highly recommend them to anyone seeking plumbing services!

[To assist us in bringing this matter to a close, you must give us a reason why you are rejecting the response. If no reason is received your complaint will be closed Administratively Resolved] Complaint: [redacted]I am rejecting this response because:
First off there was never any metion of any fee other than the $77.00 as I stated prior. As for the t/stat being loose on the wall I am in the process of remolding the home as I just took ownership in late May. The serviceman they sent DID NOT even know how to turn on  a standard T/stat, I had to explain it to him via a phone call. Now to my thinking if the service man could not turn on the unit or even work the T/stat , I wonder how good is he at repairing the unit. Now add to the fact that I explained to the office when I called them what the unit was doing and what I had traced the problem to.  They knew before they arrived that the unit was not working properly and that it could be the compressor, a relay or electical outside in the unit. or that it may simply could need to be charged with freon. I don't have the knowledge of this unit to repair it myself nor do I hold the EPA lic. to buy freon to recharge it myself, But I think that after working 40yrs. in the auto/Truck field and doing thousands of repairs on both standard car AC systems & many repairs on [redacted] and other commercial cooling units I have very good knowledge of the way things work. Granted there are differences in all these units but they still a work one basic way. Some of the following companys were ones I contacted about repairing the unit, [redacted], a total of six (6) callsed were made and one to Curtis Services. They gave me the lowest price & stated that they would be able to come out on the same day around 5:30pm. That now looking back seems a little strange but after the fact I guess it is just another way for them to rip off the customer. By not looking at the unit until that time frame you don't have any choice if you need the reapairs done one the spot of being able to contact another company until the following day as most all are closed at the time. This inturn will make you wait a longer time to get someone else to come see what the problem is or you will have to pay higher cost as it is after normal business hours and the companys wil charge an after hours higher rate.
I still state and stand by the fact that I was told that the company would come to my home and check out the unit for the amount of $77.00 and that any parts or labor would be extra once they knew what the unit needed to be repaired. Had this company be up front with the real cost involved I would have NEVER had them come out as I had called several other companies that do the same work.  I had Curtis Services come out because they told me the cost was less than some of the others, which ranged from $115.00 to $150.00 cost. At $77.00 price from Curtis Ser. it seemed they were the lowest cost.
The following day someone from Curtis called me but left no message, I returned a call to the number on my caller ID and it went to Curtis Ser. Co.  At that time the man on the phone was not willing to resolved any problem. Infact the first thing he told me was I was being turned over to a lawyer for not paying the bill.  Then he told me that all the phone calls to Curtis are recorded and he had the proof that I was told of the costs. In that matter if the company did infact record the calls they are breaking both state and federal wire tapping laws. Pa is a two (2) party state which means both partys must agree to allow the call to be taped. I DID NOT EVER AGREE TO THAT.
Judging from the Revdex.com own report info this is not the first time complaints have been made against this company. From the info I was able to get on these complaints it seem that Curtis will try to make things right once a complaint has been filed but otherwise they do nothing.  I am more than willing to take this matter to the court systems if Curtis wishes to. They are the ones that have broken laws and been trying to cover it up.
In closing I also own my own business and I WOULD NEVER treat or try to charge one of my customers this way. It is totally a ripoff  When I give someone a price to see first what the problem is THAT IS WHAT THEY ARE CHARGED. IE the $77.00 I was told.  Example; My customers are told it is $XX.XX to find the problem and then given a written cost of the labor and parts to repair the problem. If the cost or time goes over what I give them a price for then I eat the loss, I will never bill the customer for any cost over what I give them. I don't ever charge anyone to look and say yes your item is broken it will cost you $XX.XX to look and see what is the problem & then charge them for parts and labor besides. That is deceptive business in my book and just an outright rip off.
If Curtis Servixes wants to push this matter I am more than willing to take them to court and file charges aswell. The first one will be theft by decption and second I will file  under the state and federal wire tapping laws and I have no problem with adding the costs of court fees aswell as my labor rate amount of $60.00 per hour for every hour I spend in this matter plus attorney fees.Regards,[redacted]

This customer was unhappy with the cost of the repair that we made on their water line. We quoted the price upfront, performed the work in 9 degree weather under their mobil home. We did have to remove the old electrical tape around the valve we replaced, and reinstall....

When the tech finished he checked the tape and it was in working order. Sometime that night the tape failed and the pipe froze.  The next day this customer had a friend call named Bill. He told me he could have done the job himself for almost nothing. I told him if that's the case then he should have done so. He then went on to tell me that these people that he represents shouldn't have bought a mobile home. They are also not competent in making buying decisions. Bill tried to tell me that we shouldn't have done the work that they called us for. I explained that we cannot conduct business this way. If someone calls for service we must respond. His next comment was   (I told them they should have rented an apartment). After explaining things to him he told us that he would fix the tape by going to [redacted] and purchasing it himself. An hour or so later I received a call from this customers mother who started telling us that we charged her too much. She also blamed us for the old tape not working. I explained that we cannot be responsible for faulty old heat tape. She argued and demanded a discount on the work. Finally I received a call from the customer herself and again I explained that we did not cause the old tape to fail, it was old and still worked when we finished.
After the customer called I decided to credit her half of the job, she had originally only paid half because they didn't have all the money that was due. We allowed her to make a payment agreement. I called her back and told her not to pay the remaining balance which was the other half of the job. She agreed and was happy with that. I am surprised she wrote this letter. We did agree to credit her the balance she demanded. Along with that we sent a tech back at no charge to her to troubleshoot her old electric tape. It was brittle and had opened up. We were told not to replace it, she wanted to have her friend do it. I believe we did everything we could to satisfy this customer. Thanks.

I believe we have been very clear, I have offered to come out myself and take a look at the problem. She never returned my phone calls. Seems like a free cleaning is all this customer really wants.  This complaint is now closed. Thanks.Tell us why here...

As per our invoice your warranty is with Curtis Total Service on any repair, this motor repair has a standard one year warranty through us. We do not install old parts.
This customer does not understand that the price he paid was to remove the old motor and install a new one a SERVICE! Flat rate means you are quoted the price upfront and no work is performed until you agree to the price quoted for the repair. This customer was aware of the replacement charge, had us replace the motor and now thinks just because he found some "cheap" price that we should sell him the motor at internet prices. Tell me does the internet send a qualified person to install the motor too? What about the warranty?, if after the "internet" sends the part and you have an issue does it magically get removed, sent back, (in the middle of winter of course) and a new one just arrives at your door and magically gets installed? Great because the next time I need a brake job I will send my car to the dealer, have the work done. Then I will look up a set of brake pads, call them up and tell them they overcharged me. Order a set from the internet wait for them to arrive and then watch the internet genie install them for free, after all no other business costs there right? Yeah that's how business works!
Today more than ever it is important to choose the right contractor. At Curtis Total Service we make sure the technicians are trained properly so that they do the job right the first time. When you pay for a service there are some things you need to understand, a fully stocked truck, a trained technician, warranty in writing, and 27 years in business are all things that come behind excellent service.  Today there are more than 20 flat rate companies in the Lehigh Valley area. Unfortunately some people believe that a part is all that is involved providing service at your door. It is a lot more than that. If this customer was able to troubleshoot and purchase a motor over the internet (which would have been days before he received it) then removed and installed the motor himself then that is what he should have done. If you are looking for a company who provides saftey, reliability, and comfort in your home, then give us a call. Thanks.

Even before I owned my home, my parents used Curtis Total Service when they lived in PA. So once I bought my place going on three years ago, I called them to come in and help me fix the problems in my house. We've replaced numerous things (water heater, heat pump, amongst other things) and now I've had them start remodeling two of my bathrooms in my house. One has already been finished and looks amazing!
I have always had great experience from the dispatchers to the guys who actually show up to my house. Especially since this is my first house, I'm always grateful that they take the time to explain to me what's going on. And the guys always try to be courteous with leaving the house clean.
Let me say this, it will not be the cheapest work you will find. But usually more often than not, the cheapest work ends up being the most expensive because you keep having to fix it. I saw my old landlord go through this as well; she wanted the cheapest quickest fix, not the one that would last.
So far I haven't had to call them back to fix something they did, only maintenance. And I'll keep recommending them to friends here that get their own houses.

In April, 2016 I had my air conditioner and gas furnace replaced by Curtis Total Services. I want to commend the two young men who did the installation. They arrived on time, worked together in an experienced and professional manner, were courteous and respectful of me and my property, got the job done in the time they had quoted, and cleaned up afterwards to my satisfaction. I am very satisfied and I will recommend to others the good experience I had with Curtis Total Service!

First off, I am very sorry to hear this customer is in a wheelchair. My technician called me at the time of service from his home. The customer was complaining to my tech about the cost of service before we did anything. I spoke to the technician while he was standing aside the customer and I...

offered him a discount of $152.00, which was more than generous. The customer agreed and signed the paper allowing us to perform the repair. The work was finished and the customer was happy with the work, but still complained about the price of the job.
Today, more than ever, it is important to hire the right contractor. Always ask, "Do you backround check your employees? Do you drug test? How about ongoing training? How long are they in business?" An established business will provide you with reliability, safety and excellent service, which is just what Curtis Total Service has been providing their customers for over 27 years. Anyone can hire a self-employed individual or handyman who may not even be qualified to perform such a service. However, ask yourself if you want to take that chance. Wiill they be in business if I have a future problem?  Also, always knowing the cost upfront is something the customer should know. That way, no matter how long the repair takes, or if they have to run for parts, there is no question on the bill at all.
At Curtis Total Service, we understand people may not understand just how a true business runs or what it must charge to perform such services. However, we take all the steps necessary to assure our upfront pricing to the customer, and continue to offer all the great benefits that a real full home service provider can offer. Remember, whether its plumbing, heating, ac, drain cleaning, pipe lining, remodeling, etc., Curtis Total Service can take care of all your service needs with the best warranties in the business. There will be no refunds. Thanks.

At Curtis Total Service, we quote all prices upfront so there is no hidden fees or suprises. This customer was quoted upfront for the repair. The customer then agreed to the price and had us perform the repair. The motor is new and his warranty is through Curtis Total Service as is stated on his...

invoice. If there is a concern for warranty, we do offer up to five years parts and labor, depending on which service plan you choose.
Unfortunately, in today's business, there is much more to service than a "part" and "labor". Our upfront pricing manual allows the technicians to offer our customers the price upfront, this must be agreed on before we perform any work. The customer agreed and signed the invoice agreeing to the work. There will be no refund and yes, the motor is under a 1 year warranty from Curtis Total Service.

Review: On January 24th, 2012, I agreed to purchase an indoor heater, heat pump with a 10 year parts/3 year labor warranty and a yearly service contract from Curtis Total Service tech, [redacted] and [redacted], Manager. The units were installed the same day. I was informed by [redacted] and [redacted] that Curtis Total Service “took care of everything.” They informed me that they would register the units for the warranty coverage and that I did not need to do so. They also explained that I must maintain a yearly service agreement because failure to do so would void my warranty coverage.

On April 19th, 2013, Curtis Total Service came to my residence to perform the second service agreement cleaning on my heating units. The service tech, [redacted], informed me that my service contract needs to be renewed at the price of $288.00 (an increase of 20% over last year’s price) and that there would be an additional charge to remove a light layer of dust that was on the coils. I disputed the charge for 2 reasons. One, when I purchased the units, I was given a case of 16x20x1 filters. I brought it to [redacted]’s attention that the filters they gave me are too short in length, therefore allowing dust to get into the unit. Secondly, this was a scheduled cleaning under the service agreement and [redacted] was there to clean the units.

I declined both, the additional “cleaning” charge and the service contract renewal. I informed [redacted] that I would be pricing other service contracts. [redacted] then proceeded to inform me that if I failed to renew the service contract with Curtis Total Service it would void my warranty coverage.

After [redacted] left, I called [redacted] (the manufacturer of my heating units) and spoke with [redacted] and she informed me that my units were never registered with [redacted]. The registering of the units was to have been completed by Curtis Total Service, which, was explained to me on January 24th, 2012 by [redacted] and [redacted]. Since Curtis Total Service failed to register the units, I was informed that I lost 5 years of warranty coverage on my units. Unfortunately, [redacted] is unable to retroactively start my warranty coverage. [redacted] also informed me that as long as I maintained a service warranty with any HVAC company that my warranty coverage would not be voided. I was not under any obligation to stay with Curtis Total Service because they cannot void my warranty coverage just because I did not have a service contract with them.

Since my units were not registered until April 19th, 2013, when I registered them, [redacted] informed me that Curtis Total Service is liable for my warranty/labor warranty for the next 2 years since Curtis Total Service did install the units.

On April 23rd, 2013 I attempted to contact [redacted], the owner of Curtis Total Service, to discuss the warranty issues and service contract. I was informed by a “[redacted]” that he was not in the office; I asked that my call be forwarded to his voicemail so that I may leave a message. Within 5 minutes I received a phone call from [redacted], stating that I will not ever talk to the owner because, “he handles all this stuff.” [redacted]’s attitude was very rude and threatening. [redacted] threatened to void my warranty if I did not agree to renew the service contract with Curtis Total Service. I informed [redacted] that I wanted only to speak to [redacted] at this point. [redacted] made 3 return calls to me and I finally asked him to no longer contact me again and I did end the conversation by hanging up on him.Desired Settlement: I think it is a reasonable request that Curtis Total Service be responsible for the 5 year loss of warranty coverage due to their negligence in not registering my units. I am looking to be compensated in some way, whether it is a written agreement with Curtis Total Service for an extended 5 year warranty on parts at their expense or that I be reimbursed for my extended warranty costs with another HVAC dealer. I am uncertain if I would want to continue doing business with Curtis Total Service due to their “strong arm tactics” way of business. I feel that if I would I might be retaliated against if they were to ever service my units in the future.

Response:

I would like to first say that it is a shame that this clerical mistake could not have been handled over the phone. [redacted] started off this complaint by telling me that she found a company that has a "cheaper" service contract and demands that I cover her warranty while she uses some other service company to perform yearly maintenance. She was rude and threatening. I explained that we cannot do this. First off we have no idea what another service company will do upon their service visits and we certainly do not know how well they perform their work. If she chooses to go with anyone else she voids any warranty she had with us. As I tried to explain this to her she became belligerent and called me an [redacted]. She then hung up on me. After I called her back and tried again to have an intelligent conversation with her, she demanded to talk to the owner. I explained that she must deal with me on this issue. She hung up again. Even though she has overreacted and treated us in this manner I am still willing to help her out. I sent a letter to her last week and explained that we are willing to extend her warranty to 10 years for both parts and labor as long as she continues to have Curtis Total Service do the yearly maintenance on her unit.

Review: Water was leaking at the main valve where the city water enters the house ON June 26,2014. I am a quadriplegic who lives alone and has nursing arrive to assist me in the morning with food and hygiene and again at bedtime. I called the city to turn off my water and based on the A+ rating of Revdex.com, I called Curtis Total Service for the repair. The total repair time was approx. 55 minutes and entailed cutting a short section of less than 10" of 3/4" copper pipe (before the water meter), put in 3/4" couplings and installed a port valve to replace the leaking stop valve. Line was easy to access and he turned the water back on to check for leaks. I was then handed a bill for $77.00 Service call, and repair charge of $613.00. Subtotal $690.00. They also had a line item for the "Gold Card Service Plan" for $99.00 and an undisclosed monthly fee. This plan would reduce my repair portion to what I think is $543.00 (very hard to read on pink NCR paper). I told him no to the Gold Plan and suggested he call his boss because those charges were absolutely ridiculous. The boss apparently told the worker to enter a coupon amount (which I learned later they have many coupons on the web) and reluctantly deducted $152.00. The bill subtotal then became $538.00 I called the owner/boss and he told me he sets the repair amount, not an hourly rate, and after being quite belligerent, he was not reducing the bill. I paid the worker before he left, but I find the charges extraordinary. There are three line items on the bill. Service Call (includes travel time); Gold Card Service Plan (which I refused); and 1609-150 replace 3/4" main shut off valve. I feel a business that takes advantage of their customers does not deserve an A+ rating. That is like giving a rober an A+. A poorly managed business with exceptional overhead is not the consumers responsibility. Fair work at a fair price is what is expected. That work should have been in the $225 to $265 range for any licensed, and even a union plumber. I do not want others to be taken advantage of! This is unjustifiable!!!

THIS REPORT IS WRITTEN BY [redacted], [redacted]'S SISTER, I ([redacted]) WROTE AND SUBMITTED A PREVIOUS REPORT UNDER id # [redacted] ON JULY 10,2014. I PHONED THE WASHINGTON Revdex.com OFFICE TODAY, 12/1/2014 AND SPOKE TO [redacted] TO FIND OUT WHY NEITHER MY BROTHER NOR MYSELF HEARD FROM ANYONE AND SHE COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING REGARDING THIS COMPLAINT. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS MATTER.Desired Settlement: Reduce their rating, and supply a refund.

Review: I called Curtis Total Service to replace fluorescent light bulbs and/or ballasts in two of my residence closets in my home. The employees arrived, they had no idea where I was located and then they told me that I needed to pay $77.00 and have a "Service Contract" which I did not want because I had other plans to renovate in the future and I was gathering estimates at the time. I did not approve these people, since I got a bad feeling that these people had no idea what they were doing and I never called them back. A few weeks later I went to dispute the $77.00 with my bank, since I find that should have been refunded and the Owner refused to refund same. Then a few weeks later I got a card to give Curtis Total Service business and I returned it with a note telling them to refund the $77.00 and remove me from their lists immediately. The owner of the Curtis Total Service called me and told me I am cheap and I did not approve the work and he will not refund the $77.00. I hung up on him, since he is impossible and I am now interested in getting the $77.00 back and have nothing to do with this company at all.Desired Settlement: $77.00 credited either by Check or to my credit card immediately and I want to be removed from all their mailing lists. The owner needs to understand that people are not cheap, they have various ways of doing things and not everyone does things the way he does.[redacted]

Response:

This customer is very confused. As with all service calls to our company we quote the service fee over the phone. It is $77.00 to come to your home as he was told. Our skilled technician will then take a look at your problem and offer a solution, as we did with this gentleman. Unfortunaltely he did not like our price to perform the work. He also did not listen to our recomendations as to what should be done. The only thing he kept telling my techs is that our cost for repairs was to high. I believe he was expecting handy man prices. He declined the work, and that is ok. However then he called our office and kept telling me he wanted his service fee back. This is not going to happen, we quote this before we send our techs to your home so there is no misunderstanding. Of course you can call around until you find someone who is self employed or works from home that will work for less, that is up to the customer. There will be no refund.

Review: [redacted]

I am rejecting this response because:

The company tried to get me to accept a service contract which I was not interested in taking with any company. I simply wanted light bulbs replaced. Since this company is non-cooperative, I have told many people to avoid them and I will continue telling everyone I know that they are a "Fraudulent Company" and to avoid them as I will never use them for anything. I do not appreciate fraud and I will not condone it either.

Review: I called for service and was grossly overcharged for the service. The service man was there less then one hour and charge me 484.00 in labor alone. The parts he used were no more than 5.00 The correct amount should have been a service call charge of 77.00 and one hour labor of 75.00 It was one plumber, a [redacted]. I was there the whole time an watched everything. The actual job lasted about 45 mins. The service man took advantage of my situation and grossly and unfairly charged me the ridiculous amount of 484.00 labor for 45 mins of work. I am looking to pay fairly the amount of 152.00 for this service call and get an immediate refund of 332.00 sent to me at the listed address. I will file with the PA Consumer Affairs Division if I do not receive my credit next week.Desired Settlement: 332.00 refund check sent to me next week.

This customer called us after installing his own hot water heater in a rental property. Our technician looked at his problem, offered him a solution and quoted the price upfront before any work was done. After the customer agreed to the price and signed for the work suggested, the technician performed the repair.

Curtis Total Services was recommended to me by a co-worker. I just moved into a new home and had to take care of some plumbing issues. They diagnosed and took care of my plumbing issues. The plumber was very professional and did a good job. These guys are fantastic

heavy handed and incompetent
in replacing my well pump They dropped the old one
down the well with 200 feet of old pipe
When I complained their response was " those thing happen"
They don't what their doing

Review: On December 2, 2013, I contacted Curtis Total Service and ask if they could dispatch a service technician to my address to examine a basement sump pump that was malfunctioning. This pump controls all the water usage in my home from toilets to showers to sinks etc. I sit slightly below ground level so the pump is located in the basement and pumps all water etc to the street/sewage system. I was also advised that there would be a $77 fee just for the technician to come to the premises to examine the situation. I agreed and a service technician was dispatched. The tech arrived at my home at approx. 6pm. He reviewed the situation and it was determined that the pump was dead and needed to be replaced. When I asked the price, the technician indicated that he would need to return to his truck and work up a price. He returned about 10 minutes later and told me the [redacted] would be $2022. I was in a state of shock. Due to the nature of the situation and being later in the day I agreed but also requested that he provide an itemized bill so I could see how much were parts vs labor. He indicated that was not possible that they work on a flat rate only. When I asked what the flat rate was, he responded I don't know you will have to contact the office. He completed the job as this was a desperate situation but I still was not satified with being quoted a [redacted] but have no idea what the total figure represented. I decided to contact the office at 9am today where I spoke to [redacted] Operations Manager. I was also told by [redacted], he could not provide a break-out of parts vs labor and also indicated that they work on a flat rate. When I asked what the rate was, he refused to provide that information. I feel as though I have been taken advantage of. I decided to look up the part on the internet and the pump cost $422.00. So that would tell me the labor was $1600. I need this investigated as soon as possible. I think this company owes me an itemized bill unless they are hiding something. I paid by credit card in desperation but in process of stopping payment until I can fully understand what makes up the $2022 worth of charges. The technician was at my home for 2.5 hours.Desired Settlement: I am requesting an itemized bill and somewhat of a large billing adjustment as I feel this was completely overpriced.
