I recently was required to find a tax firm that would handle my situation with the Massachusetts DOR. I contacted via email Fortress Financial Services on a Sunday morning and before noon of the same day I had a response. By the following business day I was contacted, as promised, by cell phone. After a brief discussion explaining my current situation and a general discussion of what the new client procedure was, I agreed to retain Fortress Financial. I was then directed to one of their attorneys whom I spoke with for approximately 45mins the day after I retained Fortress Financial. The attorney recommended I personally reach out to Massachusetts DOR and see where I was at with them.
Well it turned out their computer system had issued me a notice in error and I was not being subjected to a "demand of payment by". Upon realizing this I was quite skeptical I was going to receive much if any of my retainer payment refunded. I contacted Fortress Financial explaining how my situation was resolved and requested a reasonable return of funds provided to date. After a review of what services the company had provided me I was informed I would be receiving 75% of funds returned to me, which I considered very reasonable as the other 25% I could fully understand as costs covered during my new client intake process.
I fully expected to require further assistance regarding my situation, but as that was not required I am very satisfied with my experience with Fortress Financial and would contact them again if needed and would recommend them to anyone needing professional guidance with a IRS or a State Dept. Of Revenue tax issue.

Fortress helped save our business. Due to a recession in our industry and a couple a failed expansions into other segments, we fell into heavy issues with the IRS. Early this year, we were completely out of money ready to shut our doors due to our factor company quitting on us due to extended IRS issues. We called Fortress as a last ditch effort to get some help on a recommendation from an associate. Like most tax relief companies, Fortress wanted a sizable cash deposit to begin working on our case. Unlike other companies, Fortress was still willing to work with us after I explained that all of our cash was tied up with a factor company. They accepted a small cash deposit with a promise to pay the remainder at a future date after they delivered an installment agreement as promised. Within a few days they had delivered a proposed IA from our revenue officer that I was able to deliver to our factor company to get funds released. I then had to switch factor companies and Fortress was able to deliver a subordination agreement to meet the needs of our new factor company within a few weeks. Fortress has continued to monitor and help us through a change in RO, paperwork delay with the IRS and personal trust fund tax assessments. They have been amazing to work with. I would highly recommend their service to anyone with a tax problem. The fee we paid them was worth every dollar. We would not be in business without them.

For anyone reading this, know that 10 years is an extremely long time to be a Fortress client (I would estimate that far fewer than 1% of our clients fall into this category). Cases are normally resolved much, much more quickly, but this particular one had many ongoing irregularities and serious aggravating factors including compliance issues as Jeff stated. Very few people and businesses can financially survive being in active collections with the taxing authorities for that amount of time, and we are absolutely delighted that we were able to keep Jeff financially intact throughout this duration.

I was contacted by the IRS in November out of the blue about an old debt that I could not afford to pay.
I was completely caught off guard and very concerned.
I did not have a lawyer and did not even know where I should go to find one.

I didn't really know what to expect but things went very smoothly.

I received a call from *** who asked for a business. I proceeded to tell her she had the wrong number and to stop calling this number. She became aggressive, stating she’s never called. I rephrased my request to not place any future calls to me. She began talking over me and raising her voice. I checked my phone records, the most recent call I’ve had from this SAME NUMBER was 2 days ago. Lying, attacking and being rude to strangers is completely uncalled for.
Fortress management apologizes for any inappropriate conduct on ***'s part. We do require our staff to treat the public with courtesy and respect. If people ask that we stop calling, our staff is required to stop calling. I must say that I am very surprised to hear this. *** is a very sweet 72 year old woman who has been with Fortress for 10 years. We have never had a complaint about any of ***'s conduct, and she has been making hundreds of phone calls every business day for a decade. To the contrary, we get quite a bit of feedback to the effect that she is one of the most polite telemarketers that people have ever heard. Also, per ***'s recollection, she never spoke with anyone at this phone number two days prior to this call. She may have called and not gotten no answer or gotten voice mail. It is also possible that one of our other representatives called two days earlier. Either of these would explain why the phone records reflect a call two days prior. *** will not be calling back. We will also be blocking all outbound calls to this number, thereby making it impossible for anyone to place an outbound call to this number from our phone system. In the extremely unlikely event that anyone from our staff contacts you again, please call us and ask for either the President or Vice President. Either of those people will be more than happy to immediately ensure that all unwanted phone calls cease. Once again, we apologize for any inappropriate conduct.

This company has sent us direct mailings twice stating that a substantial tax lein has been filed against us and that we should avail ourselves of their services ASAP to escape thye consequence. This is of course totally false and our company would never fall for this type of ridiculous ploy however, there may be unsuspecting people who would and we felt it was our duty to report them. Your symbol marking them as an accredited buisiness by the Revdex.com is prominently displayed on their letter so maybe you need to have a talk with these folks.
Fortress, along with many tax resolution companies, purchases tax lien data from a variety of data vendors. The vendors get raw tax lien data, which typically only includes the name of a business exactly as it is listed with either the IRS or a state taxing authority and the address of record of the business held by either the IRS or a state taxing authority. Then, the vendors use software to match the raw data with actual businesses. There can occasionally be a mismatch with a different business with a very similar name, a business with the same name but in a different state, a very similar dba name, a business who took over a defunct business and the like. Although the vendors are extremely accurate with regard to matching the raw lien data with the contact data of the correct business, they do not get it correct 100% of the time. Fortress purchases about 40,000 of these leads every month, so even if the vendors are accurate 99.9% of the time, there will be a few unintended recipients.
Fortress has absolutely zero interest in sending direct mail to anyone without a tax lien. We neither request nor accept fees from people or businesses who do not owe taxes. There have actually been one or two out of the thousands of clients who have hired us since 2003 where we learned after we were hired that the client did not owe taxes. We promptly refunded 100% of their money. We apologize for any inconvenience the receipt of this mail piece may have caused and assure you that there is no intent to scam or defraud.

You may want to use your brain or that of a good lawyer or advertising Agency in the preparation of your future mailings to indicate your belief that a tax lien MAY have been filed against a company. Believe me, there isn't anyone out there that is in trouble with the IRS that isn not fully aware of their peril and if your mailer reaches them then maybe they will be motivated to use your company.
