Greulich's Auto Repair Reviews (45)

I would recommend Greulich’s Automotive to everyone. If you are looking for an honest, trust worthy and dedicated shop this is your place. We rarely need auto shops as we usually buy new or certified pre-owned vehicles and use the dealerships for most of our needs. However, we purchased a used vehicle from a private owner and unfortunately the vehicle was in much worse condition then we thought it was going to be. We took the van to a local dealer who specialized in this Make and Model. The estimate they gave us was over $6900 on a vehicle we paid $3300 for. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. We started researching the Arizona Revdex.com for a shop to get a second estimate and Greulich’s was not only Revdex.com accredited but AAA rated too. We called the shop for a review; they took it the next day. They are beyond friendly, caring and most importantly committed to quality.

They looked over the van and said that many of the repairs stated by the dealership were not needed but the ones needed were in most cases HALF the cost. They started repairs that day and in the course of repairs the Van had one issue that was very perplexing. Greulich’s REFUSED to give up; they were determined to make this repair when most shops would have thrown up their hands in defeat. They tried everything in their arsenal, including bringing in other techs and even consulting with another dealership. We were so impressed with their commitment to excellence, their up front and honest approach and determination we are now customers for life. Every vehicle we own from this point forward will be serviced by them and we will scream their praises to all our family and friends.

It can be very intimidating to have vehicle issues and be difficult to find a truly honest shop. I rarely take the time to write a review for companies, let alone a automotive shop but Greulich’s is truly something special in this day of lax customer service and commitment to a job well done. We used the 32nd street location in Phoenix but after this would trust all locations.

Review: Service on 11/28/2015 Technician did not reinstall the air cleaner cover correctly. This allowed unfiltered air into the engine subsequently causing a shut down on the highway while traveling out of State. The engine failure occurred in Pensacola, Florida on Saturday afternoon 12/12/15 approximately 3:30 PM.. Had the truck towed to World Ford in Pensacola for repair. The Dealership was closing a 4:00 PM. so they could not analyze the problem until Monday 12/14/15. We had to rent a car and hotel plus other expenses waiting for the Ford dealership to fix the problem on Monday. We spent approximately $400 to find out that the Air cleaner box was not installed correctly and a small black bug in the mass aid flow sensor caused the engine shut down. The truck was still under warranty but this problem was not covered. Greulichs Automotive has not agreed to reimburse us for the expenses caused by their technicians negligence to reinstall a air cleaner cover correctly.Desired Settlement: We were offered an account credit but are traveling and do not live in Arizona. Why would we take our truck back to this location for any repair. They caused all of the inconvenience and additional repair expense by their negligence. An expense reimbursement would be acceptable.

I have personally visited the shop where this faulty work was done in January 2016. They have all of the required documents including copies of our receipts from World Ford in Pensacola where the repair work was accomplished.

Review: Concerning Greulich's Automotive on [redacted])

On July 22nd 2013 I brought my wife's Infiniti I30 2001 to Greulich's Automotive. I explained to [redacted] that when my air conditioning is on, there is a loud hum, and grinding sound that follows when I hit the gas. I left the car there and he called a couple hours later with the diagnosis. Says the sound was due to belts that needed to be replaced. I agreed that he replace them because I need my air conditioning, my mechanic does not come back from vacation till next month. I also explained how my alarm was spontaneously going off since that morning.

[redacted] called me a few hours later and said the sound was all gone and the car was ready. When I picked up the car later, the sound from the air conditioning was still there. I brought it back immediately, it was 5 pm so they told me to bring back in the morning.

At 8:30 the next morning I brought it back. They had one of their mechanics drive in the parking lot with me and he immediately diagnosed the humming sound as the motor mounts. I went inside and explained to [redacted] that I wanted a refund since they misdiagnosed the car. He says that because I agreed to the work order, that the best he can do is charge me labor for them to go back into the car and replace the new belts with my old ones. When I explained that I agreed to the work order because he told me it would fix the humming/grinding sound, he insisted that he fixed the squealing sound. He kept on repeating this fact, and that they have fulfilled their obligation to the work order. He is technically correct. But he and I made an agreement, although verbal, that they would take care of the humming, grinding sound that follows when hitting the gas. I understand if a mistake has been made, but the solution should not have been to charge me labor to go back into the car and put back my old belts. I should not be paying for [redacted]'s mistake.

The work order says for description: “when ac is running and you are driving it makes bad noise as you drive”. It says nothing on the specifics on the noise, leading to misdiagnosis later on. So, I believe [redacted] miscommunicated what was needed to be done, an honest mistake, but wasn't willing to admit to being wrong. However, while discussing the refund issue the next morning, he did acknowledge to me that he heard me say that the sound was a humming, grinding sound that followed when hitting the gas (the very opposite of the squealing sound).

Note: I was already very aware of the squealing sound, in fact my mechanic friend was going to take care of that for me after his vacation. I have now spent $150 on a service I was going to take care of for $35. (Work order says parts cost $35.) I am also $150 less able now to put down the $800 on my motor mounts to fix my air conditioning. This is quite serious considering I have a family to drive around. What is also disturbing is that when one of his mechanics drove with me to diagnose, he immediately knew the source of the sound, it was apparently very obvious.

In addition to all of this, my alarm is still broken. I am not as concerned about this, because it says on the work order that they would do a 'free diagnostics recheck' if problem persists. So I understand my $30 loss in this area because of my refusal for a recheck.Desired Settlement: Refund $173.21, at the very least $140.00.

Review: I have used the business for several years for oil changes etc, but recently I took my car in for an alignment because it kept going to the right. They supposedly did the alignment & told me that if it kept going to the right I probably needed new tires, It kept going to the right so I bought 4 new tires & they checked the alignment & printed out the report showing that it did not receive a alignment & also told me that there was no leak under the axles as had been told to me. I went back to Greulich's showed them the report & the manager id nothing to appease me. I then went to a new place & had mycar alighned, they had the car in the shop for two & a half hours making sure it was running perfect & reported no leaks found.Desired Settlement: I had to pay to have the alignment at the second shop, so I would like my refund of $89.45 from Greulich's for not doing the service I expected Thank YouVivian Pawlowski

Review: I took my car into Greulichs automotive on 6/7/14 to fix a sputtering problem that made the car stall. They assured me that the distributer was the problem and it had to be replaced. The days and weeks after the repair the problem continued. I had it towed in again on 7/9/14 and this time [redacted] assured me that it was the Catalytic Converter that was causing the problem. After a 1007.71 charge, the next day the car continued to have the same problem. I took it in a 3rd time on 7/15/14 and they realized the cause was the original Distributer was defective. After this repair the car ran fine.I asked [redacted] if the problem was the original faulty distributer, why am I paying 1007.71 for parts they said was the problem the 2nd time I brought it in. [redacted] said that the converter was old and damaged and should be replaced. I told him that the car was 20 years old and all the parts could be replaced but, I brought it in for a specific problem. If the original distributer was not faulty, the car would have run fine for a 20 year old car. Their misdiagnosis the second time I was there led to 1007.71 charge that was unnecessary. Their reaction to my complaint was a shoulder shrug and silence. I cant possibly be the only customer of theirs that was charged an outrages amount for an unnecessary repair.[redacted]Desired Settlement: I would like at the very least, 50% of the 1007.71 credited back on my credit card.

Response:

We followed best practice,

[redacted] had brought the car in on 6/7/14 for a died in flight condition. At that time we diagnosed the distributer to be the problem. As part of the diagnosis the technician found no spark, and verified the distributer has gone bad. [redacted] authorized the distributer replacement. On 7/09/14 [redacted] brought the car back in for what he was saying was the same concern and vehicle started and ran fine but, after speaking to the customer we found out that the car wasn’t having the same concern but, loosing power, and eventually stalled. Further inspected for power loss and removed the catalytic converter and took a closer look and found the catalytic converter had come apart causing a restriction in the exhaust. Spoke with [redacted] and he authorized the repair at that time. On 7/15/14 the car was brought back in for stalling and died in flight. Further inspected and found the new distributer we had installed had gone bad. We replaced the distributer under warranty using a different manufactures part. We road tested to verify concern was resolved and no other problems were found at this time. Upon customer picking up the car I had offered to show Mr. [redacted] the failed catalytic converter and he declined.

We don't see why he needs a refund. What did we do wrong?

Best regards,

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

The converter was not the cause of the problem as was shown on the third visit where it states that the distributer from the first visit was faulty. The second visit I was told it was the converter that was the problem. But, the car had the same problem immediately after it was installed. The car broke down again on the freeway and had to be towed back to them. after repairing the faulty distributer the car ran fine. They were told to only fix the sputtering problem and not to repair every worn part in the car.

Response:

The catalytic converter was definitely bad, the test we use is an exhaust back pressure test. Over time converters fall apart causing the small passages to clog with debris. This restricts the exhaust system not letting exhaust gases easily flow-through the exhaust system. In most cases you should not have had over 1 1/2 pounds per square inch of exhaust back pressure. When the exhaust back pressure gauge was installed in your engine was it operating temperature your vehicle pegged the gauge. There was no doubt catalytic converter was plugged.

Distributors provide spark, a malfunctioning distributor can lead to a catalytic converter failing. Excessive hydrocarbons can overheat the catalytic converter causing the breakdown of the catalyst inside and leading to high exhaust back pressure, this was more than likely the cause of the catalytic converter failure. Initially or distributor was bad, which led to the catalytic converter failing.

I hope this helps you understand.
