Meenan Oil Company, Inc. Reviews (62)

Review: Below is the email that we sent to the company on March 3rd in an attempt to obtain retribution from the company for the damages. We waited until this date to be sure that we were completely away of all of the damages. General Manager [redacted] FINALLY became involved at this point by telling us to get a lawyer or call our homeowners. Neither option is acceptable as we are asking for humble compensation for the damages caused by the company. Additionally, we have not made payment for oil as we are in dispute with the company. We called for an oil delivery on April 30th and were refused delivery, told THEY were closing our account and that they would not be honoring our 1 year guarantee service contract. In fact, I offered to make payment for any oil delivered that cost ABOVE the disputed amount of $1729 and we were still refused delivery and told that they were not honoring our service contract. The email copied below highlights the original issues.

March 3, 2014

Email from (homeowner)

to

[redacted] (meenan installer supervisor),

We are writing to formally request compensation for the items in our home ruined by your installer. We are being extremely reasonable, fair, and quite conservative with our numbers. We are not looking for something for free or additional damages. We merely want our home put back to where it was when your installers arrived on the morning of 1/16/14. With regard to our homeowners insurance, we are honest people who have insurance for what it is intended, a major catastrophe or unforeseen act of God. It is not to relieve careless tradesman or their employers of their basic responsibilities when installing our heater. To be clear, we will NOT be involving our homeowners insurance.

We have experienced a history of price gouging behavior by your technicians, as well as, communication of inconsistent information which dates back to 12/27 with our initial "tune up". We were given a $450 estimate to "repair" the working heater. On 1/2 your foreman recommended no repair was needed. So that initial visit was our first example of price gouging behavior. Our second experience with your price gouging behavior was in the early morning of 1/14/14 when your technician informed us, erroneously, that our repair would be a $1000 job.

Before I go any further, let's review the facts which clearly delineate Meenan Oil's responsibility for what happened at my home.

1) I want to remind you that I, homeowner's name, was here the entire 12 hours. I stood in our kitchen with only a 120 year old pine tongue and groove floor board separating myself from your technicians. When the 3rd technician arrived I heard their conversation with his own ears. I heard the lead technician tell the 3rd tech, "HE DIDN'T CHECK THE WIRE". Most reputable business men would stop right here. They would offer us, the homeowner, their heartfelt apology with their word that they would right this wrong; including any financial compensation necessary.

2) If you would like further evidence that what happened in my home was the result of negligence on your technician's part, let's visit the hard copy manual that instructs installers how to proceed when hooking up or unhooking our heater as well as basic ANSI codes, both of which will site that an installer MUST CHECK to confirm the wire is no longer live.

3) Basic training and safety practice of the [redacted] Local #[redacted] trains all members that a meter should be used to check if the wires are still active after the breaker is cut. Electrical pens can be unreliable and should not be used. Neither was used in this case which thus caused the surge throughout my home. Had your technician CHECKED THE WIRE he would have learned it was still live and would have realized the electrical main needed to be shut off to insure a safe disconnection and installation.

4) Your installers are NOT electricians, they were not given permission to remove the doors of my breaker box and fiddle around in there, I have no idea what they might have done. They were furthermore not authorized to remove the cover of our outside meter box. I will remind you that [redacted] from the [redacted], PA [redacted] field office was out on Monday 1/20 and confirmed that there was SO SIGN OF CORROSION or water in my box.

5) To add insult to injury, the unit was installed incorrectly. Since the installation of the unit we have had to call for service twice. Once due to air in the line from the oil filter to the unit which caused the unit 'rev' up during use. The unit continued to operate inefficiently, Foreman [redacted] returned again on 2/16/14 and after checking on the heater he discovered that the thermostat was programmed incorrectly upon installation, causing our unit to turn on upwards of 6 times an hour, wasting energy and fuel for over a month after installation. It was set up for a furnace (forced hot air)and not a boiler (water radiator).

6) Further evidence that both members of the installation team were not qualified to properly and safely install this unit was made known when the apprentice (who didn't check the wire) snapped off the bleeder on our dining room radiator, thus requiring 3 technicians to spend at least 5 hours fixing that issue alone.

For all the reasons stated above, we would like MEENAN OIL to compensate us in the amount of $1,729.99. This is the total for the items requiring replacement and/or repair. This is an extremely conservative number and takes nothing into account for the profound inconvenience and sheer nightmare of this entire experience.

I believe there are several options which MEENAN OIL may use to right this wrong and compensate us, the customer, for the damages insured by your installer's careless mistakes.

A) Cancel our financing with GE capital, allow us to make monthly, interest free, $100 payments to you directly over the next 57-58 months.

B) Credit our oil bill in the amount of $1,729.99

C) Cut us a check in the amount of $1,729.99

D) Provide us with a [redacted] or [redacted] gift card to purchase these items in the amount of $1,729.99

Please let us know which one of these compensatory options is your preference by the end of the week. Our itemized list can be found below my signature.

Thank you for reaching out to us.

The electrical burn damage in question, was due to electrical wiring at the home that was not to code. For this reason, Meenan suggested that the home owner contact their home owner insurance provider. The home owner insurnace provider would pay for any needed repair and subrogate any damages they believed to be the fault of another party. The home owner did not want to contact their home owner insurance company due to the high deductable that their policy possessed.

In this case, Meenan would not pay for any of the repairs in question. In addition, the customer's account will remain closed as the customer has refused to pay for the outstanding balance for services and goods rendered by Meenan.

At this time, Meenan would ask that the customer pay their outstanding balance of $1,816.37 immediately. Of this amount $1,134.41 is more than 90 days past due.

Thank you very much.

Review: [redacted]

I am rejecting this response because: This response from the business is FALSE. 1) It was not an "electrical burn". This was an electrical surge that back flashed through my entire home surging and destroying various products throughout the home. 2) The statement that our wiring was "not to code" as a reason for the electrical surge/burn is FALSE. The reason the electrical surge happened was because their technician did not follow BASIC HVAC code by checking that the wire connected to the heater was no longer "live". As stated in our original complaints verbally to meenan, in writing to meenan, and in writing to Revdex.com, this is why we are seeking damages for their careless installation. My husband HEARD the technician tell a third technician on the scene that the reason this happened was because "HE DIDN'T CHECK THE WIRE". 3) The company's statement that they told us to contact our homeowners b/c it was the faulty wiring in the home's fault is FALSE. They actually told us "go to your homeowners or get a lawyer". The General Manager **. [redacted] called and left this on our voicemail on March 5th.

Meenan's position on this issue remains the same as the original response.

Review: 196 Gallons of oil delivered on 10/08/14 to my property oil tank. I noticed immediately that my tank was dripping oil on 10/09/14. I called Meenan and they dispatched out their vendor [redacted] to complete an emergency pump out of my tank saying it was required.I asked the Meenan representative what the cost were before I initiated the pump out. I was told around $200 dollars. The rep, "** Rob" indicated that he did another pump out a few weeks earlier and that was the cost for that occurrence.[redacted] pumped out 196 gallons of home heating oil. When completed @ 1:15 AM 10/10/14, The [redacted] representative had document that showed that they removed 196 gallons and placed a temporary 45 gallons in a 55 gallon drum in place of my tank. I asked both Meenan and [redacted] what were the costs again. [redacted] told me I had to take it up with Meenan. Meanan did not supply the cost either.I received a bill for 783.80 for 196 gallons of oil delivered on 10/08/14. I indicated to three regional director level people that I never received any cost estimates up front. I received only one receipt from Meenan (I had a service contract so the bill was $0) On the receipt it stated "Tank to be pumped out by [redacted] - there will be pump out fee". I inquired as I was told it would be around $200 by the Meenan representative that night. I was then told I had to pay the cost of the oil since it is Meenan's policy. I never received any up front cost or documents explaining the policy and I feel that it was was not disclosed to me to allow me to understand my responsibilities. I could have weigh the cost before proceeding). Meenan did say that they will charge me $200 (instead of the 500 to 700 that was never discussed) for the pump out since that was what I was told - I agreed to that amount. My dispute is for the unpaid bill of $783.80. Meenan did not disclose their policy and my obligation until after the work was performed.Desired Settlement: I have agreed to pay for the $200 pump out charge that was confirmed to Jason of Meenan. I would like the $783.80 removed from my bill since it was not disclosed up front and I never received any notice of policy before, during, or after the incident.I will notify Meenan when I receive my new service so that they can pick up their temporary drum.

Response:

Hello and thank you for reaching out to us.

-8/30/01 [redacted] joined Meenan Oil as an Automatic Delivery Home Heation Oil customer.

-10/7/14 [redacted] had an account balance of $0.00

-10/8/14 [redacted] received an oil delivery of 196 gallons. The cost of the delivery was $783.80. The account's overall balance was now $783.80.

-10/9/14 [redacted] reported that he had a leaking tank to Meenan. A Meenan technician recommended to [redacted] that he have his tank pumped out to avoid further contamination of the surrounding area. [redacted] was told that if he decided to do a pump out, his oil would be be split between a temporary drum and the remainder would be returned to his new oil tank once installed. [redacted] agreed to a pump out of the tank for $200.00. The account's overall balance was now $983.80.

-10/16/14 [redacted] was charged $285.00 for his annual Service Contract renewal. The account's balance was now $1,268.80

-10/23/14 [redacted] had his Service Contract cancelled and credited back. The account's balance was now $983.80.

-Unknown Date---[redacted] decided he was going to convert his heating system to gas.

-10/29/14 [redacted] told Meenan Service Manager Jim G[redacted] by phone that he wanted a credit for the oil delivery made on 10/8/14. Jim G[redacted] told [redacted] that the oil belonged to him, was mixed with any particulates/sludge coming from his old tank, and had no value to Meenan, so Meenan would not execute a credit. Meenan would bring back the oil to [redacted]'s new tank or have it disposed of. [redacted] was not happyy with this and told Jim G[redacted] that he would not pay the balance on his account. For this reason, Jim G[redacted] told [redacted] that his account would be closed effective tomorrow and his outstanding balance would be sent to a third party for collection.

We would ask that [redacted] pay his outstanding balance of $983.80 as soon as possible. As [redacted] has refused to take his oil back, we will dispose of it.

Thank You
