Review: In June 2008 I purchased a heating and air conditioning [redacted] unit from Meyer & Depew. It was not an emergency so I was able to shop around and although the price was not the lowest it was reasonable. In June of 2015 I had to call for repair because the unit had shut down. This time it was an emergency and I did not have time to shop around so I called Meyer & Depew since they had initially installed the system. They charged me $137. to come out and diagnose the problem. The technician at the time mentioned that it would be a few hundred dollars. A proposal came from in the amount of $1,795. which I thought was high but when I called to question the high cost the service manger said that it was a very big job and would take 2 men 4 hours each and needed to have the R-22 replaced which was very expensive. Left with no alternative because he said this was a very good price and because I trusted them I agreed.

When the men actually came out to do the work it took them less than 2 hours from start to finish. My husband was present and he was very upset because the job was nothing as extensive as explained in the proposal or by the service manager. They arrived on the job at 10:28 and left at 12:40 and that included going back and forth on the phone several times with the SM. Even the expressions on the faces of the techs indicated that the price being charged was extremely high. My husband agreed at that point to $1,000 but after researching material costs and fees and other contractors we find that the job should have been not over $500. We also learned that they do not use new refrigerant but replace the system with the same refrigerant that was taken out.

I feel that Meyer & Depew took advantage of us because it was an emergency and they knew that we would not be able to shop around. They misrepresented the problem and therefore were able to "rob" us.

FYI-it needed a $20. TXV part and my own R-22. I am in finance and understand markup but this is ridiculous.Desired Settlement: I would like to have a refund of $500. which is half of the amount paid for the job. This is what the average contractor would have charged.

I was not even credit for the $137 diagnostic fee which many companies give. I don't know if this is their policy or just the service manager trying to make another couple of dollars.

After reviewing the call we have made the following determination. We originally quoted the client $1,795.00, which is our normal charge for this type of work. We use upfront pricing and that is how we quoted the client. I cannot comment on what another contractor might have charged for this work. The client spoke to our service manager, John S[redacted] and agreed to do the work for $1,000.00 since it did not take as long as expected which the client signed the service ticket for. I will attach this ticket as well. We also did use 6 pounds of new R22 refrigerant as is also listed on the ticket that was signed by the client. We did not use used refrigerant. At this time we feel that we do not owe the client any additional money.

I am not satisfied with the decision that Meyer and Depew has reached. I am not convinced that the unit was replaced with new R-22 refrigerant. I know my husband signed the service ticket but how would he know for sure if it was replaced with my existing refrigerant or new. We would have to trust the company. At this point I can't trust anything that this company has said or done. They said that they do flat billing but they are so out of line with standard rates and practices. It seems that my only recourse is to advise as many people as I can by social media to BEWARE!!!

Meyer and Depew has been my service provider for over 20 years. They are always helpful, friendly, and professional. I always request [redacted] in particular. He is thorough, friendly, and professional. Answers any questions I might have and leaves my home spotless. One of the best guys they have!! Thanks Meyer & Depew, especially [redacted], for keeping my home clean, safe, and efficient for the seasons!!

[redacted] has serviced my furnace a couple of times. He is a master at what he does, and he is timely and courteous too!

[redacted] serviced my furnace today. He was professional and had a friendly, welcoming demeanor. He was very patient in answering my various questions and explained in simple, understandable terms exactly what he was doing and what he recommended be done in order to best maintain my HVAC system. His recommendations made perfect sense and since he had the time and the equipment needed on hand to complete the recommended improvements, that avoided the need for another service call which was greatly appreciated. I have already scheduled both of next year's services calls with Meyer & Depew and have requested [redacted] to be the service specialist.

This review relates to service provided by the technician James P at my home on 11-20-2015. I found the technician to be both personable and competent. He even corrected a past deficiency I had not noticed by removing an incorrect filter that had been installed earlier by another technician, installing the proper filter and taking all steps necessary to ensure the new filter worked properly. Before arriving he called ahead to make sure that I was available. He also cleaned up after his work and made sure that everything was cleaned up and that all old parts were properly disposed of. On this basis I can recommend James P.
