Lied about account cancellation and continued to charge me for over one year- Continued to charge account after membership ended
Poor customer service
In August of 2018, I opened a membership at Olympus and, due to foreseen circumstances, I had to cancel my membership almost immediately. I cancelled via phone call and my cancellation was confirmed by the employee who took the call. I realize there is probably no documentation of this encounter given the amount of time that has elapsed. However, my account history at Olympus indicates that I have never attended Olympus gym.

Last Tuesday, March 3, 2020, it took me hours to track down an unknown charge on my bank statement. My bank directed me to call Club Systems where I spoke with a lady named *** who then told me that I was being charge each month by Olympus Athletic Club in Murfreesboro, TN. You can imagine my confusion and frustration. *** also notified me that my contract had ended some time ago, but I was automatically enrolled in a month to month plan because I never "canceled" my plan.

I immediately contacted Olympus to reconcile this matter and was met with a disgusting reality. Not only was my concern met with a "too bad, so sad" attitude, their system appears to be designed to take advantage of customers. The facts: I was told my membership was cancelled by one of their employees, and I was led to believe I would no longer be charged. No attempt was made to contact me regarding an account that wasn't being used, and nothing is being done to reconcile this matter. Their employee told me, no refunds would be given. It seems as though I was tricked into being locked into a contract with hopes that I would never notice the charge.

I had to pay my bank to put in a stop payment, effective immediately, for the unauthorized charges made on my account. Olympus has taken over $855 from my account. I was told by an employee on March 3, 2020, that Olympus requires members to visit in person to cancel memberships. Having a policy in place that customers must cancel in person doesn't change the fact that one of your employees told me over the phone that my membership was cancelled, and apparently lied.

This isn't only about being lied to and losing money. This is also about poor customer service practices, and how they chose to ignore a reconciling customer's valid concerns.

I called and emailed Olympus 7 days ago about the following concerns and have not received a response.

Desired Outcome

I am seeing a refund for the charges made to my account after I requested to cancel my membership. At minimum, I would like the refund for all charges after the my contract ended.

Hello ***,

The agreement you signed clearly states all Membership terms and conditions.

DISHONEST. DISHONEST. DISHONEST. This Business takes ADVANTAGE OF KIDS!
Olympus athletic club conned my teenage high school student (***) into a two- year contract with their lies. They totally took ADVANTAGE of a KID. Their salesman, ***, is the one who took advantage of my child. My son was invited to come to Olympus gym by a friend on July 24, 2019. The friend said he could invite a friend for free. However, when he got there *** said that they don't do that anymore and charged him $15 for a one time visit. *** told my son he could sign up with Olympus for free for the first three months and as long as he canceled within that 3 months there would not be any fees. My son already has a gym membership, so there was absolutely no reason for him to sign a contract. But he did consider switching because *** told him his first 3 months were free and that he could cancel at anytime during those three months. My son knew he had to speak to his parents because he doesn't have a job and we already have another contract with another gym. So there was absolutely no reason for him to sign a contract. But since *** led him to believe that he had 3 months to cancel he thought no harm. *** lied to my son to get him to sign a contract. *** went in person on approximately, August 14, 2019, to cancel at Olympus . When he got there *** told him he couldn't cancel. I called and spoke with *** (the manager) on that very same day and explained to him that *** had lied to my son. *** said we don't have a 3 month free trial that you can cancel and he said my kid should get a job. So his employee lied and *** just went along with it. He then proceeded to tell me my son has a 2 year contract with them. This whole situation happened because of their dishonnest sales practices. They take ADVANTAGE of kids. They shouldn't take advantage of anybody. But anybody who takes advantage of a KID should be held accountable. DISHONEST. DISHONEST. DISHONEST. This business obviously does not answer any reviews or complaints anymore since they receive so much negative fanfare. Looking at the reviews it is apparent that other people have been hoodwinked by the three month free trial offer, only to be charged immediately and locked into a two-year contract! I am surprised that this business has been around for 15 years. The F rating is well-deserved!

Desired Outcome

It would be wonderful if *** and *** would apologize to my son, because they should own up to their dishonesty. But in order to resolve this situation Olympus should completely cancel the 2 year contract that *** conned my son into signing.

Olympus Athletic Club Response • Sep 03, 2019

Hello Ms.,

*** is of the legal age and is able to sign the contract without permission of a guardian. There was nothing dishonest going on here because all terms and conditions are clearly stated in the agreement.
We do apologize for the confusion and will do what we can to resolve this issue in anyway possible.

Customer Response • Sep 09, 2019

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
Yes, my son is 18 years old. He had only been 18 for three weeks when he came to your gym. He is a high school student, just a kid. However, just because he is 18 doesn't mean your business for is not responsible for lying to him. Which is what happened. You misled led him or he never would have signed anything because he already had a gym membership elsewhere. You are responsible for misleading a kid. There is no way around that one. You keep responding stating that you want to resolve this and are willing to do so. The solution to this is for you to cancel this contract. So instead of continuing to go back and forth. Why don't you get to the point and state specifically what you are willing to do? Are you going to do the right thing and cancel this bogus contract or are you going to make an innocent kid who you lied to pay for this? It is a simple question! There is only one right solution! So make your decision and please make sure is it in detail for the world to see.

Olympus Athletic Club Response • Sep 13, 2019

Ms.,

I understand that your son failed to read the terms and conditions. We did not lie to your son since all of what we are about is clearly stated in our contract.

Business refusal to cancel membership even after multiple attempts and told was cancelled, continues to charge.
For the past year I have called repeatedly to cancel membership. Told each time it was successful, yet they continued to charge every month. Each time they acted as though they were sorry, but would never refund charges. Have tried 4 times. I had to cancel the card due to them continuing to charge every month. Today they have charged a new card that was never given to them or authorized to use. They will not stop charging no matter how many times you cancel membership or call to question. Many messages left with management and I have yet to have a return call. I will be reporting their charges to my bank as fraudulent as they do not have authorization to charge

Desired Outcome

I just want the membership officially closed and not to be charged anymore. I want them out of my life and me out of theirs.

Olympus Athletic Club Response • Aug 16, 2019

Hello,

We are not able to do any cancellations over the phone or email.

You will have to come into the facility to get your membership cancelled.

Also, we are not able to cancel an agreement with out your consent that is why it is mandatory for you to come in to the facility to get it taken care of.

Olympus Athletic Club Response • Aug 16, 2019

Hello Ms. Y,

We are located at NW Broad Street in Murfreesboro.

We have no other locations. Are you sure you signed up with us because we don't offer a 3 month free trail. Truly not sure where you got that from. Also, our contracts are clearly stated so all our members will be able to comprehend the agreement effectively. If there is something you failed to read or were not able to comprehend before you signed your contract please let us know.

We do our best to respond to all of our reviews because we pride ourselves in what we do. As being the best of the best in town.

Please let us know if there is anything we can do to resolve this issue.

Customer Response • Aug 19, 2019

I am full of aware of your location because you conned my teenage high school student into a two- year contract with your lies. Your salesman, named Ben, is the one who took advantage of a child and when I called and explained to you, Sean, what happened, you stated that my son could just get a job. Seriously!! Any business that would take advantage of a kid is the lowest of the low. I will repeat what I told you on the phone, because I want everyone to know what kind of business you run. My son was invited to come to your gym by a friend. The friend said he could invite a friend for free. However, when he got there Ben said you all don't do that anymore and charged him $15 for a one time visit, which is a ridiculous amount. My son already has a gym membership, so there was absolutely no reason for him to sign a contract with you. He considered switching because Ben told him his first 3 months were free, but that he could cancel at anytime during the three months. You can't make this stuff up. Because he knew he had to speak to his parents because he doesn't have a job and we already have another contract with another gym which we cannot break. But since Ben led him to believe that he had 3 months to cancel he thought no harm. Yes my teenage son may have signed your paperwork, but Ben told him he was signing something else or he never would have done it. He lied to my son. It is not my fault if your employees are dishonest. That is your problem. Shame on Ben for lying to make a sale and shame of you for not doing the right thing. You have so many other bad reviews for your shady business dealings. Isn't it time for your business to change your reputation in a positive direction?
You ask to let you know if there is anything you can do to solve this problem. There is! Cancel my high school student's two-year gym membership that Ben dis-honestly led him to sign up for. Because that is the right thing to do unless you want to be known as a business that takes ADVANTAGE of KIDS. Do the right thing!

Olympus Athletic Club Response • Aug 19, 2019

Hello Ms.,

It is impossible for us to force anyone into a contract especially since all of our terms and conditions are bluntly stated in our contract. We also encourage everyone to read the contract before signing.

Please call our facility at 615-895-0604 and send your contact information and your son's name to [email protected] so we can resolve this issue immediately.

Thank you.

we signed up at Olympus we were told it was $45 a month for a couple and sign to verify our information. Then they told us we have a 2 year contract.
In January of 2019 we went to Olympus to check out the gym as we were looking for a new one. We were told after we toured that if we decided to sign up that day it would be $5 off and $0 down for the first month. We thought the price of $45 a month for 2 people was great and we loved the gym at first. Then, come May we called to ask about our membership because we moved into an apartment complex they had a deal with that gave a free membership. The person in charge said yes it would be then come the next month I got charged the full amount and had to call 2 times to get it corrected. We also inquired about the membership cancellation for ourselves because our apartment gym was getting upgrades and they said we were under a 2 year contract that we signed and we were dumbfounded because we both knew we didn't give our consent for that to happen as we didn't want a long term contract. They told us we have to pay the full amount to get out of it or if we move 25 miles away it's $100 to close it out. When we "signed" we were told to sign that our information was correct like our name, birthday and addresses and never saw this so called contract. In fact when we looked back at the form for 2 person memberships on their website it said month to month. Now we are stuck paying for a gym membership we don't want anymore because of how they pulled us into the business. We feel as if we were welcomed in and loved it and taken advantage of to be scammed just for extra money per month to go to the gym. We go every so often just because we are paying for it but it is completely unprofessional customer service the way we found everything out.

Desired Outcome

We are seeking resolution to our apparent contract and would ideally like out of it completely but at minimum be contacted by the main manager.

Olympus Athletic Club Response • Sep 06, 2019

All of our agreements are clearly stated with the terms and conditions.

We always stress the importance of reading over the agreement before signing.
We also only have 2 year contact agreements.

Customer Response • Sep 06, 2019

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
I do not accept your reasoning at all because we were never given a chance to even read as we were told to sign verifying our information was correct. Your website is also completely misleading and should be fixed if that's the case because it says month to month. This is just terrible customer service and we were never even told in the 30 minute tour and 15 with the boss about a contract which is absolutely deceptive and not good practice. You cannot sit here and blame clients because of your lack of information given because if you did "stress" us to read it I would've never signed up. I am absolutely appalled and am so frustrated with this entire experience as a whole.

Olympus Athletic Club Response • Sep 10, 2019

We only do agreements in all of our years of business. We also give our members time to read over all agreements before signing.

Regarding the September response I am highly disappointed in this level of customer service or lack there of. You may outline your terms in a contract but you never once spoke of a 2 year agreement when you discussed us signing this contract as you told us it was to verify information about ourselves plus payment. I honestly don't know what can be done to resolve this issue. I have 1 year left in this contract and I never go because I'm so beyond frustrated and upset with all that has happened. At this point I'm paying for an unused membership because of this customer service.

Once the agreement is signed it is now in the possession with our billing company. The best way to take care of this contract is to either utilize the membership or buy out of the membership.

What other method will work best for you so we can reach a mutual understanding?

Please let us know if we can be of any other help!

Thank you.

The gym's procedure on cancelling a membership is horrible. My husband and I have gone into several gyms to cancel it and was told various things, like only a manager could cancel it and it had to be done in person. No matter what time of day it was a manager was never available. We did have an employee tell us he would put in the request and the manager would come in later to cancel it. That never happened. Not once were we told we could mail in a cancellation request. The fact that we have to even mail something in is ridiculous. If anyone can sign up a person, than anyone should be able to cancel it. I'd rather drive 45 minutes one way than visit Olympus ever again. I wish I could leave zero stars.

Got gym membership. Tried to cancel. Kept being told wrong information. Had to change bank accounts. Showed up on my credit.
I joined Olympus Gym in 2016 under my maiden name ***. I was told it was no contract and I could cancel anytime. At the end of 2016 I tried to cancel and was told I had signed a contract. I told them no I didn't and asked to see this contract. I was told only *** (the owner) could get me the contract and he was not in. The man working at the desk told me the woman who signed me up does this all the time to customers where she tells them it's no contract. They told me *** would call me when he was available. I never received a call. I ended up calling in and speaking to *** about what his worker said the woman who signed me up does all the time. *** told me no one in his gym would tell me that. I ended up telling them I just wanted to cancel and they told me I would have to pay $100 which I didn't have at the time. I ended up calling back on payday and was told I needed a written letter. I told them I was going back home to PA for a month and could not come in. They let me know I could send in a letter signed asking for cancellation. A month later I was charged AGAIN and when I called they told me they never received any letter and I could ONLY come in to cancel. I told them that's not what I was told originally and the person on the phone told me that no one there would have told me that. I ended up going in person and was once again told only *** could cancel my membership. *** was CONVENIENTLY unavailable again and every single time I called after that. I ended up changing bank accounts just to get them to stop charging me. Today I have a debt of 860$ from Olympus. My plan that I originally signed up with was 40$ a month. I have no clue where this 860$ is coming from. While researching I have found I'm not the only one this has happened to. Their policies and practices are really sketchy. I want this off my credit. It took months of arguing back and forth to no avail.

Desired Outcome

I really just want this off my credit. I don't believe the charge is fair. I was deceived by the staff and strung along for months trying to cancel that membership. Please help me find some resolution.

Olympus Athletic Club Response • Dec 27, 2018

We do not have a member by ***. There might be a mistake if she joined SpringHill or Shelbyville location.

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
My maiden name of which I was signed up under is ***. They had me as a member. It's on my credit report. If they don't have any paper work on me I want this off my credit.

My membership has been cancelled for several months but the gym still autodrafts my dues in spite of assurances by ***, the general manager.
I called to cancel my gym membership in mid summer. *** told me that he had canceled my membership and that one more payment would draft the following month, since 30 days' notice was required. I let this time run and then noticed that I continued to get an autodraft for dues to my checking account. I called *** again and he said he wasn't sure why the system was doing this because it showed canceled but claimed he fixed the problem. I continue to get an autodraft for dues of $10/month. I don't know if *** is dishonest or just incompetent but he has failed to correct the problem.

Desired Outcome

Reimbursement for dues of $40.00 that were improperly drafted from my account for August, September, October and November 2018, at $10/month, as well as $25.00 for a stop payment fee that I incurred at my banking institution today.

Olympus Athletic Club Response • Dec 19, 2018

His wife is the primary holder of the account and her account is active.

The cancellation was done earlier than Olympus has proposed but I will accept the cancellation date of October if I am reimbursed for October and November as well as the bank fee (total of $45). This account was converted from *** to *** because *** never used it. I was never charged two (2) monthly gym fees, just one, because Olympus converted the account. I was assured that the account was closed.

Olympus Team Services

I am being billed for an account that was cancelled in compliance with the Company cancellation policy.
On 7/3/18 I applied for a membership online. However, once I printed the membership details, I saw the agreement was for 24-months. As such, I read the cancellation policy. It stated that I must cancel within 3 days, in writing via certified mail. I did so and sent the letter out on 7/5/18 as 7/4/18 was a holiday. The letter was delivered on 7/7/18, again, in compliance as 7/4/18 was a holiday; thus, this day was null and void. I assumed everything had been processed until one day when looking at my credit card statement, I saw charges from Olympus for my original contract amount. I attempted to speak with someone at the gym, however, when I went I was told someone could only help me in person (not over the phone) after 12pm each day. I have disputed the charges with my credit card company and the billing company sent information regarding my contract, however, it was clear they had never received the cancellation request from "headquarters" as they did not realize I had proof that I cancelled my request. It is beyond cumbersome to keep disputing charges every month for an issue that should not exist. I followed the proper protocol, however, Olympus has not.
I am tired of disputing and would like this issue corrected for good. Again, I have followed the protocol as outlined in the Olympus agreement, yet, the company has not processed my request and apparently has only one person that can assist after 12pm. I have copies off the cancellation letter as well as the certified mail and delivery receipts. This information was sent again to ASF the billing company for Olympus as they said they never received a cancellation request.

Desired Outcome

Cancellation of my agreement as requested on 7/5/18 as well as prompt processing of all my disputes for monies that should never have been charged.

Was told I would be signing up for a month to month contract only to learn it was actually a 2 year membership.
Upon signing up in January I was assured that membership was month-to-month. I have since found out that I have a 2 year membership that I can only cancel upon going to the gym itself and seeing the owners in person.

This is just an absurd business practice. The guys that run the place clearly attempt to intimidate individuals from cancelling by forcing you into the building to go see a huge man and telling them you don't want to use the gym anymore.

Desired Outcome

I want to cancel my membership, no questions asked.

Olympus Athletic Club Response • Nov 12, 2018

all new members are informed about the contract they are signing. Also, we ask you to read the contract before you signing, all information is stated in the contract.

I signed a one year contract paid in full at the church street location in Murfreesboro Tennessee in 2016. My contract went month to month in 2017 after I had to relocate to broad street due to other location closing.I cancelled the membership and was told by a young man at the desk it would be taken care of. One month later billed again, so I went back in and was told all the management had been fired due to this exact problem. After many attempts of going in in person and having a lady tell me she texted the owner Sean on his personal phone about my issue still being billed. So after multiple visits, a certified letter, and many phone calls I stopped payment with my bank. Now as of today I get a notice from my credit monitor that I was put in collections. Very dishonest gym, management team, and owner Sean. Stay away from unethical businesses like this. You've been warned.

Absolutely displeased with this business came as a guest with a friend in 2015 upon leaving I was told that I could start a free trial before joining I signed up for the free trial and filled out my application I end up relocated and never returned to the gym after that first visit as a guest I told them my situation and that I wouldn't be needing the free trial and that I want going to be charged since I never attended they assured me I wouldnt be charged because I never signed up for membership I was charged $692 off on my credit after calling and calling and getting the run around I am beyond angry for having my card charged for a membership I never signed up for I'm working to get this resolved even if that means I have to go to contact corporate offices to do so

For the past three to four months we have been trying to cancel our membership and our still being charged
We have emails every month for the past three to four months the stating our membership has been cancelled and every month we continue to be charged.

Desired Outcome

Cancel my account and issue a refund for the past three months

Money outside of my monthly membership fees were taken out of my account without any notice or confirmation. It was not authorized.
Money outside of my monthly membership fees were taken out of my account without any notice or confirmation. It was not authorized. When trying to talk to the manager, he stated it was for fees that the company decided to add at the last minute. Nothing was sent to me or communicated. I am not in a current contract nor did I sign any agreement. I have been a member here at this gym for 12+ years but closed my account. Taking money out of someone's account without authorization or any kind of notice is stealing.

Desired Outcome

I am seeking a complete refund of the money that was taken out of my bank account without any authorization or notice.

Olympus Athletic Club Response • Oct 21, 2018

It has already been refunded a week and a half ago and the member is happy to our knowledge.

Customer Response • Oct 22, 2018

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
Olympus Athletic Club did not contact me nor did they refund the money that they stole from account. I guess they are going to continue to lie and betray people. It sad that a business feels that they can do whatever they want without consent just because they have your account number. Let me remind you I was not in contract which means any changes with my account I should have been notified and should have been my decision to continue my membership not Olympus Athletic Clubs.

Olympus Athletic Club Response • Nov 04, 2018

This situation has been corrected and the customer is happy.

they refuse to cancel my membership that I never agreed to. and constantly taking money out of my bank account.
For the past year I have been trying to cancel my membership with this gym. they tell me I have to be 25 miles away from each location but I refuse to move that far away just to cancel my membership. there management staff are extremely rude. I called the other day to they and cancel again and this guy (***) said he couldn't do anything about it, telling me I have to call there new business company and cancel through them but they have no authority to do so. So that should mean the gym them selfs can cancel it for me. I asked to speak to the gym owner and he said yes he will be coming in work soon. 15 minutes later he calls back (***) in a different voice and tell me he is the owner and what may I help you with. I tell him is this ***? he said no we jus sound alike and starts laughing. This is just poor management from these guys. The monthly payments are usually $40.00 every 4th of the month but last month they took it out on or around the 13th and charged $78 for a yearly fee. all I wanted to do was cancel and since they don't go through ASF billing company anymore then that should mean I would be able to cancel it.

Desired Outcome

I would just want all this to be canceled and i would like the last month (september-now) to be refunded since it did not come out on the dates they were supposed to.

Been trying to cancel my membership for a year. They told me to wait the contract period, I did and they are still charging me.
They have been charging my master card 28.00 every month since Aug 2016. I Have went up there over ten times to cancel, I have called all the numbers, I waited my contract period, I wrote a letter to cancel in writing. Its Sep 2018 and im still paying.

Desired Outcome

Refund for Sep 2018 BIll and a stop payment. I paid my 2 year contract in full. Enough is enough.

Hello,

What is the amount to be refunded?

I submitted my cancellation ( acct # ***) By certified mail on July 19, 2018 with the understanding of 30 break period. I got charged in sept.
I submitted my termination on 7/19/2018 by certified mail with the instruction in letter to email once received. I received no email of termination, I also followed up with an email to the olympus email address to confirm mid August and received nothing. I got charged in September 6th. I want September refunded and removed from this club.

Desired Outcome

Refund my September charge

I joined this gym quite a few years ago and enjoyed going to this gym. I moved this year and attempted multiple times to cancel my membership and got the run around. I always went in at the times when a "manager" was supposed to be on duty to cancel my membership, and no one was ever present. I was told each time by the front desk associate that it would be cancelled when the owner came in. They wrote my name down each time and nothing ever came of it. As of now I have a claim on my credit because the owner/ manager did not do their job.
