Pet's Best Insurance Services Reviews (%countItem)

This company is a bait and switch scam. If your pet has EVER been seen by a veterinarian, for ANY reason, they consider it a pre-existing condition from then on, and will not cover it. When I called to inquire as to why my claim for an ear infection was denied, I was told that it was a pre-existing condition, and that my dog is property, and that is how they insure her. This Army veteran and animal lover disapproves!

Pet's Best Insurance Services Response • Feb 07, 2018

Insurance is a device whereby a group of people pool their risk and their money so that in the future, when an unexpected problem arises, they can all share in the premium to defray the loss. Insurance doesn't work if it includes benefits for conditions and problems that exist prior to the policy being purchased, as it removes the requirement that the problem be unexpected and replaces it with a sure loss. Premiums under these conditions would be far too high for individuals to afford, and would not provide any actual savings in the event of a loss.

Medical records obtained from *** indicate that your pet was diagnosed with recurrent ear and skin infections beginning at least ten months prior to coverage being purchased. When the same condition occurs on 12/4/2016, 2/3/2017, 2/27/2017, and 5/25/2017, a policy purchased on 10/24/2017 will not cover the same condition when it is claimed again on 12/6/2017. Pre-existing conditions are specifically excluded for the reasons stated above.

We cannot refund premium for periods of time in which coverage was in place. The coverage was available for any non-excluded condition, meaning any future unexpected illness or injury excluding any expected pre-existing conditions. As the coverage was available, the premium is not refundable.

Your policy was cancelled yesterday at your request. Due to the abusive behavior that you have displayed to our customer service department on multiple occasions, I must insist that any future communications be restricted to writing and addressed to the attention of the company's legal counsel.

Complaint: ***

I am rejecting this response because their statement ignores the fact, that on their own website, pre-existing conditions are defined as, "Any illness or injury that begins before your policy is effective, or during your waiting period, will be considered “pre-existing”. Some conditions, like broken legs or kennel cough, heal or are curable and require no further treatment. Once healed or cured, these are not considered pre-existing conditions." (https://www.petsbest.com/coverage) What normal person, wouldn't consider an ear infection, one of these conditions that can be healed, and therefor, not a pre-existing condition? I cancelled my policy because I was mislead, and my money was taken under false pretenses.

Sincerely

The website also says for complete details to review your policy documents, and gives you access to sample policy documents before the purchase is made. We then give you thirty days to examine those documents and cancel for a full refund should you be unhappy with the language in the policy that you purchased.

The attachment I provided was disregarded, and their response wasn't relevant to my concerns in any way. This company misrepresented themselves, and charged me for a service I never actually received. All I want is a refund of the money I paid them.

The company is a joke, complete scam. My dog was denied claims based on their definition of a pre existing condition. At no time was she ever diagnosed with the condition stated and my veterinarian completely agreed and stated it was a disgrace for this pet insurance company to take advantage of customers. There are so many pet insurance companies; choose wisely. Now I am stuck with my dog in this awful service experience since switching companies would be now nearly impossible. The whole experience lacked follow up and was one of the worst run companies that I have been a part of. Good luck

Hello *** we understand your frustration. In order to accurate process claims, we request medical records directly from your veterinarian. The medical records determined that the claimed condition was present prior to the purchase of the policy, deeming it pre-existing and not covered by insurance. We would like to take your feedback to ensure we are being very clear with our members that conditions for which signs and symptoms are present, prior to coverage, will not be covered. We value you as a member of the Pets Best family. Please contact us with further questions.
Thanks

On top of everything, defamation of character occurred. At no time did I ever decline Bella seeing a specialist. The supervisor clearly did not check facts in the situation and I am very upset over those words she used in the declined appeal letter. I will always be very disappointed with this company but unfortunately I am stuck with them. Good luck to everyone else using Pets Best. My attorney is currently working with me in the situation.

I had signed up for a quarterly insurance with pets best on 7/7/2017 for a quarterly insurance. While signing up for the insurance I had provided my card information. Yesterday my card got automatically charged for the insurance for next quarter, but there was no email or any information given to me regarding the automatic payment during the end of the time. This is a shock to me and when I went to the website the site didn't show that my card will be automatically charged in the payment section or any where else where a normal user access the site. There was also no option to opt out of automatic payment in the site. When I call and asked for cancellation and refund, the person mentioned that the refund will be prorated. But I was automatically charged and didn't use the service! I mentioned it to her but all I got was "you can contact your bank or lawyer regarding this". This is so rude!! I am writing this hoping the person managing the company values customer experience and relationship by providing just and clear communication to the user. I dont want anyone else to go through the same issue!

Pet's Best Insurance Services Response

Good morning,

I have researched our records, and we have not done any business with the individual named in the complaint or with the phone number listed in the complaint. The policy number listed is valid, but belongs to a different named individual with a different phone number. As I cannot confirm that Pets Best has done any business with the complainant, I cannot comment on the merits of the complaint.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Within a month after purchasing insurance for my dog, Boo, he had a couple of illnesses that he had never experienced before. My vet did all the necessary tests, and found out my dog is OK. I submitted it to insurance and the claim was denied due to a pre-existing condition which doesn't exist. Come to find out it was a paperwork error and was told to have my vet send in the correct documentation and a letter confirming they mistakenly sent something wrongly, and appeal the claim. I did just that and then waited 2 months for them do deny it again. The Pets Best representative I spoke with saw the error and told me to submit it again with the note form the vet explaining and I would definitely be approved for coverage. After another 60 days, it was denied again. Mind you during this time they are still collecting a monthly charge of $90.00 yet still needed 5 months to wrongfully deny my claim. I feel this company is a total sham and just trying to scam people out of money due to their lengthy wait time and inattention to detail. I requested to at least be refunded the monthly payments during the waiting time and was denied that also!

Pet's Best Insurance Services Response

We have reviewed your claim three times now at original submission and again on both a first and second level appeal. Your policy was purchased on 5/4/2017 and contains a 14 day waiting period before coverage is effective for medical conditions. Medical records obtained from Spot On Veterinary clearly indicate that signs of vomiting and gagging were noted on 5/1/2017 (3 days before policy was purchased) and the mass on the left hip was noted on 5/4/2017 (the day the policy was purchased). Both of these conditions are excluded as occurring before the policy was purchased or during the exclusionary waiting period, and as such were appropriately denied.

We cannot refund premiums for coverage periods that have already passed, as your insurance coverage was in force during those periods and would have covered any non-excluded, new conditions that arose during that time. As your policy is already cancelled, you have already received a refund for any unused premiums.

Customer Response

Complaint: ***

I am rejecting this response because:

As reported to Pets Best during my appeal and second appeal, with supporting documentation from Spot On Vet, those dates are incorrect of the mass and vomiting and coughing! Which is Why I appealed it twice after verbally explaining to their reps on the phone who then guided me to appeal it again and again because they understood that! How is it that Pets Best STILL is denying based off the FIRST claim which was FLAWED?!?!?! I didn't see the vet on May 1st nor May 4th! I reported to Spot On Vet only that I had started an insurance policy on the 4th. Pets Best is a terrible company with poor business practice and they should absolutely refund me for the claim, and the months wasted while they took their time reviewing those appeals to only deny with the same reasoning as the first denial.

Sincerely

I reported to Spot On Vet only that I had started an insurance policy on the 4th. Pets Best is a terrible company with poor business practice and they should absolutely refund me for the claim, and the months wasted while they took their time reviewing those appeals to only deny with the same reasoning as the first denial.

Sincerely

Got a 10 week on kitten on 7/4/17. took for check up as you should, he had diarrhea, like all kittens do. This was do to mother's milk and switching of food. Doc gave probiotic, and antibiotic in case. I asked for a fecal test to make sure his de worming worked and to make sure he didn't have parasites. All neg! I only did this to make sure if he did, I could take care of it so my other cat would not get ill. After that, he only had his kitty wellness, neuter, and front declawing. on 8/31/17 he went to the doc for being lethargic, rapid breathing. The doc ran multiple test to find he had a 105.5 temp, fluid around lungs, abdomen, and dehydrated from the fever. We have had multiple appts to figure this out. Pets Best is saying this is preexisting? What???? This is insane. I am now having my vet write a letter saying otherwise. These people think their experts, but the vets are the actual doctors here. His first appt he had none of the critical issues and now during this critical time he doesn't have an bowel issues. This is comparing apple to oranges. I think they just want to deny people to not pay out. They take advantage and lie to people. I am hoping my vet can correct this, or this complaint will. This is a horrible and emotional experience. They certainly pray on people.

Your policy contains a process for appealing claims that you feel were improperly denied or processed incorrectly. Sending a letter from your veterinarian is an excellent addition to an appeal. I can see from our records that your appeal was received 3 days ago, and you can expect a thorough review of your claim file and an answer to that appeal within 30 days of submission.
