PPG Industries Inc Reviews (63)

This is a review for PPG Timeless paint. I had primed and painted my kitchen cabinets and doors using Zinsser oil based primer and the PPG Diamond, which by the way worked beautifully, it was perfectly smooth. A quart was only enough for one coat, so I went back to get more and the women made a mistake and gave me Timeless. I took it anyway. It destroyed the cabinet doors. That evening, I went around the grooves on the fronts with a brush, let them dry and flipped them over. I started rolling the back sides and ten minutes in, it began to clump up, leaving lumps on both surface and roller. Even if I had only used a small amount at a time, I literally would have had to change or wash the brush, roller, and tray with every 2 cabinets. The globs weren't all, even the first couple of cabinets dried with a funky rough surface, and the next morning I noticed deep unsightly marks where I had brushed. Basically not one cabinet was spared from this awful product. Keep in mind I used Wooster brand brush & roller, and I just painted an entire 900 sq ft apartment, along with one coat on the cabinets and doors using the Diamond paint, without issue. I went out and bought another quart of Diamond. Due to time constraints, I decided to just shave off the bumps and simply put another coat over the backs of the cabinets. However, the brush marks on front were so deep and unacceptable, I tried to sand them down with fine sandpaper, which only made it worse. The heat from the sander turned it into some sort of plastic like goo. Needless to say, I ultimately had to sand down every single cabinet with course paper and start over, it took hours and hours, my place is covered with dust. To be fair, I called PPG and they are sending me a check for the cost of the paint. Though at this point, the check isn't close to what it's cost me. I've gone through a ton of sand paper pads and tack cloth, had to buy more primer, rollers, trays, and brushes, not to mention 2 full days of work. I may as well have purchased new cabinet doors. This is no exaggeration, as you can see by the finish in the first photo (yes, I used tack cloth before painting!). The second photo shows the aftermath of the sanding, and the third is to compare it with the ultra smooth first coat of Diamond. I can't believe this paint is even on the shelf.

I apologize for the delay in processing the paperwork. I am looking into the delay and can respond directly to Ms***

I am looking into this Complaint and will respond as soon as possible. Thank you

I received a letter in the mail from PPG after a representative came to my home No tests were done as stated prior PPG wrote a letter to me explaining that I had changed my story of application and didn't backbrush the wood They also explained that both deck sections didn't have chipping, just one part of the deck did They also explained the stain bucket was empty as I emptied it the first day into a new lowes bucket with sealed lid I offered to take pictures or measurements of the left over product and was told it's not necessary To to my defense, the calls from PPG are recorded to hear my explanation of application Though both methods are acceptable I don't understand why it's an issue Both decks have chipping, one section around the pool is worse I explained to the representative the flaking on the other deck, but he was primiraly concerned for pictures purpose the worst areasI called *** the PPG representative and he disagreed with the fact on the letter that I used all the stain PPG explained I used all gallons I don't know what else I can possibly say or do PPG didn't do the test that we agreed upon, regaurdless the proof I give How can I use too much product if they never checked? Why was only one part of the decks photographed? I took pictures of both decks and sent them to PPG day one, and that's all the rep did

I purchased Glidden Diamond interior paint & primer at Home Depot. I asked the paint person if, since this product already had a primer as part of its base, did I need a primer. He said "NO".
I am trying to paint a small vanity in the bathroom of my mobile home. I am 73 years old but have had a great deal of experience with DIY projects as social security is not enough to hire people to do the work.
The vanity is made of oak drawers (3) and doors (2). The face of the vanity is a laminate in an oak color. Just to be sure, in case there was any varnish or other finish on the wood I sanded everything.
The first coat of this product did not go on well. Thinking that it just might need a second coat I waited for the recommended four hours and added a second coat. This covered the wood but it had "waves" on the surface.
I returned to Home Depot after a full day of sanding and painting to ask what was wrong. This time I got the "paint expert" who said that I should have used a primer first! He said that the only time that you do not need a primer is if you are painting over a painted surface. I said that the instructions on the can did not explain this and he just shrugged and sold a can of ZILZ 2 primer to me.
I spent two hours yesterday and almost three hours this morning sanding off all of the newly painted surfaces. I am exhausted! Before I try again (which, obviously I am leary of doing) do you have any advice or can you send me a refund or coupon for another quart of this paint so that I might have enough to finish the vanity?
Also, I should add that I purchased a gallon of your PPG Timeless interior paint & primer semi-gloss to paint the walls of this bathroom. The walls are already painted with a semi-gloss in a matching color. I am now afraid to process without expert instruction. Will you please send details on what I need to do to paint the walls ( after this nightmare experience).
Thank You,
Mary Lou French

RE: [redacted]ID 1[redacted]Dear Ms. [redacted]Thank you for the opportunity to investigate and comment on Ms. [redacted]’s complaint. In July Ms. [redacted] visited two PPG store locations in Louisville, Kentucky (Breckenridge Lane and Hurstboume Lane). At the Breckenridge Lane store she...

purchased a $50.00 gift card and met with a store decorator/color consultant to discuss paint color selections. Ms. [redacted] was not satisfied with the information that was provided to her and complained to the store manager that she had been treated poorly by the PPG associate. At that time the store manager promptly refunded her for the gift card.At the Hurstboume Lane store Ms. [redacted] complained that she was not satisfied with the color of product she had previously purchased and demanded a refund. Although she did not have a receipt, PPG refunded her $22.79 and gave her three gallons of product and a brush, with a total retail value of $149.49.PPG has made every attempt to satisfy Ms. [redacted]. She has received apologies from the Breckenridge Lane store manager, the Hurstboume Lane sales manager, and the Louisville area store group manager. This was done in spite of her derogatory comments about PPG personnel and the offensive language that she used in the stores and in a voice mail message that has been forwarded to me.PPG is proud not only of its products but its conscientious and hard-working associates as well. Our goal is complete customer satisfaction and PPG makes every attempt to meet that goal.Very truly yours, Susan ** H[redacted]

I will look into this immediately.  It was my understanding everything had been completed.  Thank you for letting me know.

I had stated in the prior e - mail that the rep can come test my porch.  Being I spoke to two different reps from PPG I'm afraid the story was not correct on there end. I sprayed and rolled my porch. Depending what area, depends how it was applied just as I stated prior.   I had a lot of over spray from the spindles that went onto the ground.  I also have stain left over and there is no way to determine how much I used being PPG never checked.  I also stated your company can come test my deck last month and no one contacted me since.  Being I work and the deck has a padlock because it surrounds a swimming pool, we will have to schedule a good day and time.  I would like you to test the product and do the math with the satin left compared to how much I used.  I still have the left over stain as well.  If PPG would assign one person to my case there would be less mix up.  The first lady [redacted] never contacted me for 6 weeks after I e - mailed and called with messages.  She stated a message was left for me on my voice mail that was never found. Like I stated previously, I know others in this area with the same issues.  There is no where on the container that states to apply the stain like in your email.  Your reps tried trapping me into answering questions wrong so you could drop this case.  The stain is a low quality product that simply can't live up to any warranty provided.

Thank you for bringing this complaint to my attention.  I will investigate with PPG's Technical Department and will respond accordingly.

Thank you for bringing this complaint to PPG's attention.  PPG's Technical Service Department will contact Ms. Wright to discuss/investigate her complaint.

My previous response was not an "offer".  As noted, I will arrange for a PPG representative to inspect Mr. [redacted]'s deck.
