Scam of a Company
This company is an absolute scam. I received a bill in the mail, it included a charge for the genetic test from my last pregnancy (over a year and a half ago!), and also a charge for the genetic test from my current pregnancy. The first test I was charged $7,500 before insurance. The second genetic test (exact same test), I was charged $750 before insurance. How does the exact same test vary by $7,000!?! I have spent countless calls and hours on the phone trying to get someone to answer this for me and I keep getting pushed around and they say they can't see my full bill and what I'm looking at but their best guess is this and that. I confirmed with my doctors office that this was the in fact the exact same test ordered each time. My insurance covered what it should, but I am baffled by the fact that the exact same test can vary by $7k? And that no one at this company can actually look at my bill or answer a question it? Ridiculous!

My story is the same as everyone else. My OB assured me that due to relationship or agreement between the office and Progenity, the test would cost $99 out of pocket and I agreed because I was high-risk. My lab draw date was 7/15/2019. In JUNE of 2020 I got a bill for $1668.38. I called my OB office and they told me that this should not happen and gave me the name of the representative, Brenna. She told me to 'hang tight' and that she was escalating my issue. In July 2020 (now 1 year after the draw) I got another bill for the same amount. I emailed Brenna again and she told me 'don't pay anything out of pocket' and that 'we'll get it figured out'. I have this in email. Then I got a call 8/25/20 from the NEWEST rep (Apparently Brenna left) asking if I had any questions about my bill. When I expressed my frustration she said that she understands and makes calls like this "all the time". She told me that I would receive a third bill then my account would be forwarded to collections and that I would have to explain the situation to them, as there was nothing Progenity could do. I have found similar reports all over social media and now here. I have discussed the issue with my OB as well as other OBs in my area, I am certain that they would NOT want their patients scammed in this way. Revdex.com PLEASE INVESTIGATE

I will add to the long list of scam stories and say that I too was given the pamphlet that stated the maximum cost is typically $185, if anything at all. My midwife had said that they have a self pay option of $250 and that if I were to receive a bill higher than that, I could call and have it reduced to the self pay price. The pamphlet also says that the standard process is your insurance gets billed and then if there is going to be any patient responsibility, someone from Progentity will contact you with options.

Well, sure enough, 5 months after I had the test, I receive a bill from Progenity totaling $640. The test was out of network with my insurance, so my insurance paid nothing. Never did anyone from progenity call me to discuss options as the pamphlet stated. When I called their financial department, I was told that I couldn’t do self-pay because my insurance had already been billed.

Why does the pamphlet make it sound like the standard process is to bill insurance and then give you the option to self pay if you have a patient responsibility? I said, why would I want my insurance to be billed simply for the privilege of being charged $400 more for this test than the self-pay option?

This is a huge scam. Progenity is assuring OBs and midwives that they have this affordable option for genetic testing, our doctors are recommending these tests and then we are getting stuck with huge bills because they misrepresent the process you’re supposed to go through in order to get the pricing quoted to you upfront. I have researched more on this company and came across several lawsuits filed against them already for medical fraud.

Same as the rest - false marketing peace of mind program is BS. Do not use this company.

I was told I wouldn’t pay more than $200 and that it was covered by my insurance. My insurance denied the claim. I got a bill for almost $1000 dollars. My OB office gave me an advocates number and was told they would help me get the cost down to $200. I got a call from Progenity who said I would be responsible for the amount. I didn’t qualify under income. They would try and qualify me under COVID. Doesn’t seem like they are willing to help and I was lied to by my OB about this test and now I have this outrageous bill. My husband is also currently undergoing open heart surgery today so this doesn’t help me already being stressed.

Hello Thank you for your inquiry. However, we were unsuccessful in locating your account. Please provide the patient's first and last name, along with the date of birth to ensure appropriate processing.

Me and my wife were recommended prenatal tests by the Medical Center nurses. We were informed that the out of pocket maximum would be $200. Me and my wife are in a low risk group both age wise as well as country of origin/race wise. We choose to take the tests *ONLYbecause the 200$ costs seemed reasonable.

However two months later we received a bill of $1231.11. This was totally unexpected to us. The only mitigation option offered to us was through submission of my financial documents ( tax returns/ paystubs etc.)

Why is Progenity not being upfront about what the costs would be pre-treatment ? I'm going to call my Medical Center to inform them about the mis-information the nursing staff is providing to the uninformed patients about treatment costs, leading them to make medical choices based on misguided information.

Patient: Mamta Kaimadathil DOB: 05/28/2020

Had prenatal genetic testing done in May 2019. It is now August 2020 and I am just now receiving a bill from PROGENITY for $826.98. This is more than what I was initially quoted however I figured I would just call to inquire if insurance was billed appropriately. I was told they just received payment from Humana. I looked into this and it Humana processed this in June 2019. Unsure why I am just now receiving a bill and for about $600 more than I was initially quoted.

Called and spoke numerous times with a customer care representative “Phil”. He was flat out rude and unhelpful. I asked to speak with a manager or even another customer representative, he said there was absolutely no one else I could speak with for another two days.

‘Ashley’ the manager finally called back. She was more pleasant but Didn’t not have answers. She said she didn’t know when my insurance company actually paid them (Phil lied). She also didn’t know why I was just received ieve a bill a year past when services were rendered. She did say when doctors offices or their representatives quote that ~$200 figure it is actually a financial program you have to apply for after you get your bill based upon your income if you qualify.

Overall very disappointed with services recurved by PROGENITY. Would not recommend.

All of the reviews are correct. I was told by my RE to get tested along with my husband. When I saw the claim on UHC website, I was shocked. Progenity had billed my insurance $18,500 for myself and $18,500 for my husband! I was crying for weeks. I was trying to have a baby and thought this cost more than a child. When the claim was processed, I was charged almost $4,000 for myself and my husband's was brought down to about $1,400. Now I am stuck having to pay this. I would never have gotten the tests done if we had known they would charge me so much. Do not use this company! You will be stuck with a huge bill!

I was hesitant to do the testing simply because we didn't feel it was imperative for us and also I'd heard it could be sneakily expensive. Boy was this true. My OB estimated $100-$200 out of pocket after insurance...well Progenity billed my insurance $1200, my insurance gave an "in network" discount of a few hundred so Progenity then billed us $780. That is INSANE. I called my insurance to be sure it was processed correctly and it was. So I called Progenity and they just told me bummer and that I could apply for their peace of mind program, which we likely don't even qualify for because it's based on federal poverty guidelines. I told them they are a scam and they need to be upfront. I showed my OB my bill and she was shocked and I plan to talk to her again at my next appointment letting her know they're still trying to make us pay. This company is an absolute scam and hearing everyone else's story be so close to mine is infuriating.

I have just received a bill for $500+ for the bloodwork done over a year ago (July 2019). Upon looking closer at my claims, my insurance was billed for $7,500. I was told by my OB that it would be about $100-$200 out of pocket, so I'm not sure if this was a billing error... But, looking at the reviews on this page it looks like this is an issue and will make me hesitate in utilizing their services again or recommending them.

As mentioned by other people, I was told by my Dr. Office that the blood work for genetic carrier would be around $185. Instead, got a bill for $500. (I have taken a picture of their website that mentions this)
Spoke to a lady from the company and she basically blamed my doctors office and said there was nothing she can do unless I filled out a form with my tax return.
This is ridiculous, to make the matter worse, they haven't called back and their phone states that due to heavy call volume, to leave a message.

Tammy A. From Progenity has reached out to me and has resolved the matter. Thanks again for the resolution.

I received the Innatal screening in April 2020. I'm fortunate that my results were low-risk. However, billing has been a nightmare. My doctor's office represented to me at the time of screening that the service would cost me no more that $199. No mention of alternate billing options; it was simply run through my insurance.

Three months later I received a bill from Progenity for $645. Confused, I called customer service and all they would offer was a payment plan or to see if I qualify for low-income assistance (I do not). The customer service representatives pretended not to know about the $199 option and would not honor it.

Progenity was billed as out-of-network for my insurance (BCBS), so since I hadn't (and hopefully never will) meet my $5000 out-of-network deductible, I am left with a balance of $645.

After months of back-and-forth with the Progenity rep who works with my doctor's office, who seemed as confused as I was, I was finally put in touch with the Billing Advocates. It seems they advocate for Progenity rather than the patient. I spoke with Christina Houston who informed me that the self-pay rate at the time of service was actually $250, not $199. But since my insurance was billed instead, I apparently don't qualify to pay $250 and now must pay $645!

If I had known that self-pay was billed at a lower rate, I would have opted for that. But this option was never presented to me. Instead, Progenity is attempting to extort an additional $446 more from me than the price I was quoted at the time of service for the luxury of billing my insurance (which paid nothing).

I cannot fathom that these discriminatory billing practices are legal and they certainly aren't ethical. Progenity exploits the information disadvantage of patients and misrepresents the cost of its service. I will be informing my doctor's office of this experience so that they can opt to work with a more transparent and ethical prenatal testing company.

I was told $100-$200 max out of pocket, but got billed $569. Called and was told that they could not reduce the amount unless I qualified for their Peace of Mind Program (which I do not, because both my husband and I work overtime). Absolutely ridiculous and heartbreaking news to hear that you're stuck with a bill this large FOR BLOODWORK before even having a baby that will cost thousands more. I called my insurance company and Progenity twice, and apparently I'm now stuck with this bill while pregnant, not able to pay it. I would have NEVER done this test if I knew it would be 5x MORE than what I was expecting.

When is someone going to hold this company accountable? Clearly they are misinforming physicians. I was told, just like everyone else that has written in, that my bill would be no more than $250 after insurance. Well, I got a bill 8 months later that I owed almost $800. I just called Progenity and I have to show them my tax return to qualify for a discount. This is absolutely ridiculous. I have already called my physicians office and plan to call every other one listed on their company website to let them know they should read these Revdex.com complaints unless this issue is resolved with their company.

During the early stages of my pregnancy in June of 2019, my OBGYN provided a blood test to determine any health risks for my baby. We were not given any indication that the test would cost any money. The test came back *** for a ***, and we were advised that my husband should get the test as well - no mention of any cost to us. Months later, after our daughter was born, we get a bill in the mail from Progenity (we had never even heard of them at this point. We never received a report from the tests, just a phone call from my doctor) for $1,932. We try to dispute this with Progenity, but they had said our insurance had already been billed. Unfortunately, we changed insurance providers in September of 2019, so have no ability to dispute it with our old provider. Several months later after many phone calls, they realize that we never received a bill for my husband's test. We then receive another bill for $1,841 in the mail.

Progenity is an absolute SCAM! Avoid them at all costs! They are informing doctors offices that you will pay no more than $100 even if insurance doesn’t cover it. Received a bill for nearly $4,300 11 months after service was performed. Billing dept of course wouldn’t help because they are scam artists as well so next step is hiring an attorney.

Completely unethical they should be shut down. The mn billing rep told me that based on the diagnosis codes I should’ve been able to see if it was covered - she doenst even know how medical billing works. The diagnosis codes ARE covered. We are about to pay $7k for a BLOOD TEST !!!!! This company is a complete scam and I will tell everyone and anyone who will listen to NEVER get a test through them . Also telling my OB and every OB I work with at work to never ever put a patient through this company.

Good luck with the financial assistance ! You won’t get a reduced rate unless you make under 55k which is poverty level. Such a pathetic joke

Hello Thank you for your inquiry. However, we were unsuccessful in locating your account. Please provide the patient's first and last name, along with the date of birth to ensure appropriate processing.

I took the Genetic test on January 2020. My OB doctor suggested this company for this test and gave me a pamphlet with a number of their local representative. I called her twice to make sure how much I should pay out of pocket, she checked my insurance and said it is in network and she indicated if I receive a bill it wouldn’t be more than $200. After seven month I got a $1000 bill, which $500 is out of network deductible however their rep said they are in network with my insurance. I called them multiple times they are not friendly and said they can’t do anything they don’t even accept what they said and what they mentioned in their pamphlet. I trusted my OB and this company’s representative and was my big mistake. My OB told she wouldn’t refer patients to them anymore. Do not use this company for testing even if your doctor advice.

My provider told my husband and I that genetic testing will cost around $400. Progenity billed the insurance $4800, they were paid $700. 5 months later we receive a $1100 bill in the mail. I called them to ask why and was told by the representative that even though my insurance paid a portion of it there was still a balance owed. I said I wouldn’t be paying since they’ve already been paid $300 more than what my doctor had quoted. I’ve called my doctors office and has agreed to give Progenity a call on our behalf.
I will warning everyone I know about this company.
