Have to give the Roto-Rooter service we got in Jackson, MI TWO THUMBS DOWN! The individual who came to unplug our drain with a "snake" didn't quote a price on the phone, left a mess, and fancied that he could charge $185/hr for labor alone (I know physicians and lawyers who don't cost as much per hour!)[redacted].

Good Morning,
Our hydrojetting services are a minimum of $1150 and his covers a two hour time frame.  After you spoke wih a member of our office staff as a courtesy we agreed to knock $300 off the correct price in an effort to make you a happy customer.  We...

provided a FREE estimate of the cost up front like we do with every call.  If you had an issue with our pricing at that point you could have declined the service visit.  At this time we cannot offer any additional discounts on our hydrojetting services.

Morning [redacted],         I would like to apologize to [redacted] for his service experience with us back in May of 2015.  We at Roto-Rooter take a tremendous amount of pride in providing outstanding customer service to our customers and we take every complaint very seriously.  We will use your feedback to educate our technicians and management team on how to get better .  I have approved per your request a $55 refund for the service work we provided to you. I will process a check refund request tomorrow Friday November 13th . The check will be mailed out in the next 10 business days to [redacted] Woodbridge Va [redacted] Calvin W[redacted]General ManagerRoto-Rooter Services Company ###-###-####

Good Afternoon,
We cannot definitively say that our service visit was the cause of the second backup at your business.  It is possible that during our intial call the problem was in the same area of the sewer line.  We applied the cost of the first sevice visit to the...

second and offered a reduced price for water remediation.  We cannot take responsibility but we would be happy to handle the restoration if still needed FREE of CHARGE.

Hello, I've been the RR General Manager at the same location but I never rece a letter at 1001 Dawson Drive Newark. I have strived to maintain an A+ rating.
This customer received a refund check in the mail last week.

Initial Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2016/04/04) */
As the customer indicates, of the multiple options we provided, he chose to have the camera ran through the line to inspect it. The camera was unable to be pushed beyond a problem area a few feet from the access point. The customer seems to be...

taken back by this and the fact that all we were using was the camera equipment, but that's all the customer would agree to use and he didn't want to go with any other option. We left our recommendations based on what happened with the camera inspection. The customer performed a repair himself before initially calling us about a refund. We refused to refund, because we performed, in good faith, the service that was agreed upon. We offered to camera inspect the line again at no additional cost since a repair was made that may have allowed an inspection further down the line. The customer agreed, but due to a misunderstanding in how we schedule appointments, the customer was expecting us to arrive exactly at the start of an appointment window, and subsequently canceled when he called in to inquire about our status shortly thereafter when we didn't. The offer to re-inspect the line remains open.
Sewer cameras are expensive; it is about $12,000 for one of them and we charge for their use and associated labor when used on an individual basis: $225 for up to an hour.
Initial Consumer Rebuttal /* (3000, 7, 2016/04/05) */
(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
My reactions are below: Please consider the following:
As the customer indicates, of the multiple options we provided, he chose to have the camera ran through the line to inspect it. The camera was unable to be pushed beyond a problem area a few feet from the access point.
Yes. BECAUSE. This is what I told the tech would happen. I told Logan there was dirt buildup at the bottom of the downspout filling up the drain 80%.
The customer seems to be taken back by this and the fact that all we were using was the camera equipment, but that's all the customer would agree to use and he didn't want to go with any other option.
Yes. BECAUSE I was told that depending on what type of drain line, the two methods may destroy the drains. I chose the camera option to (A) find the end of the drain. (B) Determine the line type construction. Neither of which were completed. I was quoted $380 to power auger the line and $680 to water blast the line. The tech told me that since we couldn't find the end of the drain, that these options might not work. I didn't want to spend $1,000 for nothing. It's bad enough I spend $225 for nothing. Isn't there an old fashioned hand snake that could have been used?
We left our recommendations based on what happened with the camera inspection. The customer performed a repair himself before initially calling us about a refund.
FALSE. No. I called for a refund once I got back to work, 25 minutes after the technician left.
We refused to refund, because we performed, in good faith, the service that was agreed upon.
FALSE. No. The tech spent 30 minutes walking around with the camera. It was a failed operation. He did nothing. You offer "free estimates", that's how you get people to let you in their doors. Then, you charge them absurd amounts. This is the exact point where the tech should have given his "free estimation" that he couldn't help my situation.
FALSE. No. When I originally called back to request a refund I was told I had to speak with a manager. Ron called me back and said that they couldn't give me a refund, but would come back out. I told him I would dig up the drain over the weekend and we agreed on 12:30 on Monday to re-scope the line. I have a job. I am very busy. Monday at 12:45, I called and found out I was on their schedule for around 4:00. I told the representative, Kevin, that this appointment was due to the fact that I wanted a refund. I said I was an unhappy customer and would contract a different company to help me. As I drove back to work, I told Kevin that I wanted to cancel the 4:00 appointment, and only wanted my money back. He told me a manager would have to call me. No one called me the rest of the day. At this point I expected to see a refund in my bank account.
Here is the definition from Websters Dictionary---Simple Definition of APPOINTMENT
: an agreement to meet with someone at a particular time
Sewer cameras are expensive; it is about $12,000 for one of them and we charge for their use and associated labor when used on an individual basis: $225 for up to an hour.
I recommend anyone reading this to look to surrounding area Roto Rooter reviews. There is a VERY common trend of the CUSTOMER being in the wrong. Ron proposes an eloquently written rebuttal of why we, the CUSTOMER, are foolish for our decisions and ineptness. I have made a repair at the house of a broken piece of pipe which allowed dirt to fall in. I am willing to let you re-scope the drain to find the end and mark it. Do not use any means to clear the line of any possible debris other than a manual snake to find it's termination. The access at the house remains open. OR refund my money like I have asked and I will contract someone else.
Final Business Response /* (4000, 12, 2016/04/18) */
We shall camera inspect, locate and mark the end of the pipe, if possible, as the customer requests, today, with approval from upper management to do so with no one present on-site.
Final Consumer Response /* (2000, 14, 2016/04/19) */
(The consumer indicated he/she ACCEPTED the response from the business.)
It took almost a month, but the problem is resolved.

Good Morning,
I apologize that my original response to this complaint was not received.  We have already given the customer a $300 discount off of our minimum service fee. The line required hydrojetting which is $1150 for the first two hours.  This price and method was explained prior to starting any work, if our customer did not wish to proceed with the work they could have opted to decline service .  We give free estimates with no obligation or committment until we receive approval for work.  We will not be offering any additional discounts on this service call.
Regards,

I am a tenant that had concerns due to odors in the master bedroom and bath of a rental that is managed by [redacted]. Around June particularly after large rain falls and higher humidity levels my wife and I noticed a mildew, sewer, damp musty like smell in the master bedroom. We reported this to property management who said they would schedule a plumber to come check it out. The odor seemed to go away so we canceled this appointment. However when the temperature increased and we had lots of rain it came back so we decided to report it again and have it checked. So Roto Rooter is contracted by property management to assess the odor. The day the tech showed up he walked in and I explained briefly my concerns and he said " Well they sent the wrong guy I am just getting over being sick and I cant smell a thing!" He checked the two sinks in the master bathroom and looked around the toilet and spent the next half hour talking to his boss on his phone while walking my driveway smoking and throwing cigarette butts in my yard. He came back and said there were no plumbing issues he could find. I said I felt the plumbing under the home should be expected and he had me show him the entrance to the crawl space, which appeared to be to small for him to fit through due to his large size. He refused to go under the home and inspect the plumbing saying he did not need to do that. He then ask me to sign some paperwork and I told him I was not the owner and did not feel he did a complete inspection and refused to sign the paperwork. This made him very mad and he stormed off to his vehicle and spent another half hour smoking and throwing cigarette butts in my driveway while presumably he completed the invoice for the service call. I called and reported this to the [redacted] property Management office and told them I was going to go under the home and inspect the plumbing that the plumber refused to check. I did so and found that the moisture barrior and insulation was torn out around all the plumbing along with multiple other areas under master bedroom. I called and reported this to the property management office. They said they could not do anything further until they received the bill from Roto Rooter. So I waited and then received a bill from property management with the copy of the invoice from the angry tech which stated there was no smell at time of service despite male owner insisting there was a strong odor. It was obvious this plumber was being vindictive due to my refusal to sign his paperwork and telling him he should inspect under the home being the invoice said nothing about him saying he was just getting over being sick and could not smell anything. It went on to say I was rude and insulting to the tech but did not say in what way. The invoice also stated no leaks on system found under home despite the techs refusal to go under the home. There was no mention of the moisture barrior and insulation being torn out from around all the plumbing under the home because the tech lied about inspecting under the home. Due to the techs lies the property management issued me a bill for $150 from Roto Rooter due to tenant error because the plumber found no issues with the plumbing and noted there was no odor at time of service. I tried to talk to the manager but they immediately defended the tech saying he was not sick and only smoked a electronic cigarette, and so on. I could see that was a pointless conversation when the facts I was giving was being countered with lies. I felt as though the tech may be a son that could do no wrong. I called the Roto Rooter office in the next town and inquired as to how much a diagnostic fee to assess a problem like this and they informed me they charged $75 to diagnose a problem. Desired SettlementThe tech lied in the invoice and was being vindictive due to my refusal to sign paperwork. This bill should be voided (for the property owner, I will never pay it and will dispute it in court if necessary) and an apology issued to myself. The tech lied on the invoice and did not perform a complete inspection. This is proven by them not knowing or reporting the problems in the invoice concerning the insulation and moisture barrier around all the plumbing fixtures in the area that was allegedly inspected. The barrier was ripped open with piles of insulation on the ground around every plumbing fixture. This problem had to be repaired and the odors have now went away with the repair. I am a [redacted] that has served honorably and faithfully; it is very unfortantant that my integrity is being questioned due to the unprofessional and dishonest actions of a Roto Rooter tech. Business Response THIS CUSTOMER'S ACCUSATIONS ARE FALSE. WE SENT OUR FIELD SUPERVISOR TO INVESTIGATE THIS JOB. THESE WERE HIS FINDINGS: INVESTIGATED REPORTED SEWER SMELL IN MASTER BEDROOM. INSPECTED ALL PLUMBING FIXTURES IN ADJOINING MASTER BATHROOM. FOUND ALL P-TRAPS TO HOLD WATER PROPERLY, MECHANICAL VENTS ARE FUNCTIONING PROPERLY AND TOILET SEAL IS NOT LEAKING AND IS HOLDING PROPERLY. NO LEAKS ON SYSTEM FOUND UNDER HOME. NO SMELL PRESENT AT TIME OF SERVICE. MALE TENANT STATED SMELLING IT VERY STRONGLY AT TIME OF SERVICE DESPITE LACK OF ODOR. ALSO STATES PROBLEM IS WORST WHEN IT RAINS. NO EVIDENCE OF SEPTIC PROBLEMS. WHEN TENANT WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WERE NO PLUMBING ISSUES FOUND, HE BECAME RUDE AND INSULTING TO TECH. TENANT HAD STATED A PROBLEM WITH ODOR HAD BEEN REASON FOR REPLACEMENT OF CARPETING IN MASTER BEDROOM DUE TO PREVIOUS TENANTS PET. URINE MAY HAVE SOAKED INTO SUBFLOORING AND STILL CAUSING ODOR AT HIGHER HUMIDITY LEVELS, IE... WHEN IT RAINS. THERE IS NOTHING FURTHER THAT OUR FIELD SUPERVISOR COULD HAVE DONE. ALL PLUMBING CHECKED OUT FINE. AS FAR AS THE ALLEGED LACK OF PROFESSIONALISM FROM OUR FIELD SUPERVISOR, [redacted] HAS BEEN WORKING FOR OUR COMPANY FOR MANY YEARS AND WE HAVE NEVER HAD SUCH COMPLAINTS REGARDING HIS PERFORMANCE, 0R LACK OF. WE ARE CERTAIN THOUGH THAT THE PROPERTY MANAGMENT COMPANY THAT RENTS TO MR [redacted] HAS HAD NUMEROURS PETTY COMPLAINTS FROM HIM. SOME PEOPLE CAN'T BE PLEASED NO MATTER WHAT THE CIRCUMSTANCE. Consumer Response This company's misrepresentations of the facts have been clearly proven false by a subsequent inspection, which revealed plumbing issues under the home that were the causing of the odors.I don't feel it is rude and insulting to expect someone to perform the job they are charging for. Unfortunately a second person had to diagnose the problem that could have been identified initially if the plumber would have simply inspected under the home. The attempt to make me look like a bad tenant that files petty complaints and is never pleased is false. I have requested service a total of three times. First was for a broken air conditioner that was repaired and I was completely pleased, the second was a broken freezer that was repaired and I was completely pleased, the third was this concern which was corrected but delayed due to the plumbers lies and failure to perform a proper inspection. The company charges $150 diagnostic fee, compared to other local plumbers that charge $75 for the same service. The plumber walked in my home looked in two sink bowls, looked down at toilet, refused to do any further inspections and then charged $150, who would be pleased with that... laugh out loud. The Property Management staff reported that they would not be using this company again!

Review: The shower valve in the left upstairs of my house is broken and leaking. I called Roto-Rooter ("the company", or "they" there after, ###-###-####) to have it fixed. They send a technician in on 07/**/2014 and charged me $108.13 (invoice# [redacted]) without fixing anything,I paid this $108.13 in full anyway. The shower was still leaking when the technician left. I call the company again and ask to fix it. They did not send anyone in until 08/**/14 and let the shower leaking for about two months time. On 08/**/14, the technician came in and installed new Moen shower valve with new access panel and fixed the problem and billed me another $222.68 (invoice# [redacted]). I paid that in full. So I paid $108.13 + $222.68 = $330.81 for fix this shower leaking by replace the shower valve. To replace the shower Vale is the only thing they do to fix the leaking problem. and I have paid $330.81 for labor and material, which is coincide with my knowledge of prevailing service charge of the similar type of work in our region. However, recently, I receive collection bill from MED-REV company sending me another bill for $464.94 for the same job that Roto-Rooter have done, with invoice # [redacted], which make the job (Simply replace a shower valve to stop leaking) total in $795.75! OMG! I have never heard in our area that simply to replace a shower valve to stop leaking will cost almost $800!!! This is a simple job. I took all the pictures of the spot. Not complicatted at all and I then got some second opinions from some other handy plummer, they told me the typical cost of this job including material and labor should be somewhere around $280 to $450 depends on who did it, but never be $795.75!Desired Settlement: I have already paid the invoice [redacted] and [redacted] in the total of $330.81 for labor and material of this job. I am not liable for the collection company's invoice #[redacted] addition $464.94 at all. The collection company should stop collecting this amount from me. I do not own that.

Review: Had plugged drain line, have had same issue before and used same company to correct it. Usually pay $187.50 for this service and today the tech quoted $271 + taxes. I asked him about the price difference and he had no answer. Contacted the company to ask them why the difference and they were unable to say why either.Desired Settlement: Would at least like to know why the price difference for the exact same work...had to clear drain from roof vent using snake and took less than 5 minutes to do. If they cannot explain difference, should get price difference.

Review: My daughter ([redacted]) called Roto-Rooter on 10/04/13 to come to [redacted] in [redacted] to fix the faucet/shower head in the guest bathroom as there was no hot water coming through. It would get to the sink, but not the shower. Plus we needed to have the drains snaked in two sinks in the master bathroom. They said they would be out in a couple of hours. It didn't happen. We waited all weekend, and finally a guy showed up on Saturday night after dark 10/12/13. He pretended to work diligently on the project, but the neighbors said he was mostly outside talking on his cell phone the whole time. He finally said he could not fix the shower and he would have to come back the following Saturday night and it would cost $800 to repair!? He also pulled out the plugs in the master bathroom and cleaned the hair off (which I had just done) and did NOT snake the drains at all, then charged my daughter $100 for it!He said he would schedule a return visit the following Saturday, but when we called, he had not. We decided to hire another plumber from [redacted] Plumbing ([redacted]), who said it should have been an easy fix, but it appeared as if the guy from Roto Rooter had intentionally ruined the pipe and parts, and the wall and fixtures would have to be removed to repair it, which he did. It cost us $725. He also said the guy from Roto-Rooter didn't actually have a license, but I don't know how he would know that? At the very least, we would like to have our $97.50 returned (Check #[redacted]) from Roto-Rooter for wasting our time (which we will never get back), and for not actually snaking the master bathroom drains at all. We could also possibly sue Roto-Rooter or take them to small claims court for the $725 it cost us to fix the damage they had done.Desired Settlement: At the very least, we would like to have our $97.50 returned (Check #[redacted]) from Roto-Rooter for wasting our time (which we will never get back), and for not actually snaking the master bathroom drains at all. After internally investigating the complaint and speaking with the customer, the customer and I agreed to a refund of $360 rather then the $97.50 she requested in her complaint.

Review: On November 11, 2014 I contacted Roto-Rooter when I discovered my son had flushed cotton [redacted] down the toilet. Roto rooter said they would send someone out to take a look. 9:53 a.m. [redacted] the technician showed up at my house and handed me a flat rate bill of $225.00. I said O.K. as long as the sewer gets cleared out. He said it wouldn't be a problem. He also stated that another tech was on his way to take a look with a camera. The pipe was cleared at 10:15 a.m. and the tech came to the door and told me that the tech we were waiting for would be there in a few minutes. I was also asked at this time "Is this your first home?" in which I replied yes. [redacted] a tech arrived shortly after 10:30 and began to scope the line. A few minutes passed with the two techs outside chatting and my doorbell rang. At the door was the tech Richard, who asked that I step outside really quick. I stepped outside with the Camera tech [redacted]. [redacted] stated there was a big problem with the sewer. I said o.k. "what is the problem?" [redacted] replied "the sewer line is separated." I asked where it was separated and he said toward the main connection. He then used a location tool and located the separation. I asked how serious is the separation? He replied it needs repaired. [redacted] rang the doorbell again with an estimate in his hand for $3200.00. [redacted] then asked "is this your first home?" I replied yes but I work in the industry. He replied "I would take care of it soon!" and explained their process quickly. I began work immediately myself, not allowing my family to use the sewer at all. The process was very long and expensive including excavating down to the connection. Once I got to the connection, I found that there was no separation. Roto-Rooter sent a supervisor named [redacted] who stated the same findings as I did. [redacted] the manager contacted me 3 days later to explain he was sorry for the false diagnoses and Roto-Rooter will only return $225.00. I declined the offer and was hung up on.Desired Settlement: I would like Roto-Rooter to pay to repair the unnecessary damages done to my home. I would also like them to be aware of the fraudulent estimates and scopes of work being written within their company.

Regards,

I used this business from their Wilsonville, Oregon branch. I had a clogged main drain to the septic tank November 22, 2014. I thought the tech had cleaned out the main drain. He said he did and suggested that I have the septic tank cleaned out which I had done that same day. On January 9, 2015 one of the rooms in my basement was filled with an inch and a half of water. So I called them again. A very nice tech came out and found a clog in that same drain in the middle of the night. Interesting enough that just doesn't happen in such a short period. Now I have $3,000 worth of damage. The manager was not very nice on the phone and said the first clean out was guaranteed for 10 days only. Interesting enough the second service is guaranteed for 120 days. I paid $264.45 for first service and $270. for second service. They didn't even agree to refunding me for the first service. As a side note the first tech was not having a good day and had many issues with getting the drain pipe off and his equipment to function that day. Also, to note, the second tech showed me the camera and the pipe, along where the clog was. The first tech did not show me the camera or anything. Just blamed it on the septic tank, which I found out was not really full either. The biggest thing is the damage now in this second back up. I have spent $1300 just to have the restoration company come. The rest is still to be replaced - carpet, walls, molding, and tile with initial estimate of $3200.

Review: Failed to complete services contracted for. Breach of contract .Desired Settlement: Refund of $400 dollars .

Business

Response:

FYI…. The $400 requested is being refunded to Mr. [redacted].

On Friday, January 8th, we discovered a slab leak. I contacted Roto Rooter after I had the City of Newport Beach come to turn off the water. The City of Newport Beach determines that the water pipe affected is connected to our irrigation. Roto Rooter sends [redacted] who doesn’t want to listen to what the issue is and wants to tell us there is a leak in our water heater? He tells us that we need a leak detection test and a different techician needs to come. That is scheduled for this past Saturday, January 9th. Saturday a technician by the name of [redacted] comes and tells us a leak detection is not required b/c the city of NB already determined the source of leak so he says he doesn’t know why he was sent out and he cannot give us estimate for repairs since it is not in the scope of his duty. He calls [redacted]i who is supposed to come today, Tuesday, January 12th at 10am. I get a call about 8am to inform me that someone is on their way. As I probe, I find out it is the same technician [redacted] that came on Saturday and said he couldn’t do anything. So I call the branch manager to report the problem. His name is [redacted], and he gets annoyed with me! He doesn't want to listen to the story and defends his workers and tells me I don't need to use Roto Rooter, that there are plenty of plumbers out there. It was completely unprofessional behavior from a Regional Manager. When I told him I was going to find someone else to help me, he said "then why should I investigate the matter any further?" His behavior was completely out of line. I was absolutely appalled.

Based on this experience, I would never contact Roto Rooter for any service, and would highly suggest to anyone that needs a plumbing service to look elsewhere. I found a full service plumber through my general contractor who came highly recommended. Roto Rooter is inefficient, unreliable and lacks customer service appeal.
