42nd Street Photo Reviews (84)

I ordered a camera from 42nd Street Photo on 3/26 and was contacted by a customer service representative on 3/27 to ask if I wanted delivery confirmation with a signature. I told him I did, and he said that the camera would ship that day "express" and that I would shortly receive a tracking number.

On 3/28, I sent an email to 42nd Street Photo to request the tracking number I did not receive. No response.
On 3/29, I sent another email to request the tracking number. No response.
On 3/30, I called 42nd Street Photo's Internet customer service and sales numbers. No answer. Phone rang, and rang, and rang.

The status of the order on the company's website reads "shipping on 3/27," which was three days ago.

I've no idea when/if the camera will ship or how to contact the company. I had anticipated receiving the camera by 4/5 before I leave for a vacation in Portugal. I used PayPal as payment, so I suppose I'll have to seek recourse though them.

Not happy!

Review: I asked for a receipt for the [redacted] hvr-a1u professional hdv camcorder (Demo) in case. I was on the phone when I bought this used camcorder. I specifically asked if for the discount price of 1500.00 if it had all parts to it (especially microphone). Ph # ###-###-#### ([redacted]) salesman informed me all parts are on the camcorder. The invoice [redacted] said I spent 2400.00 dollars for also 2 year warranty, 32gb memory stick pro duo card, np-qm91 extended rechargeable battery and rapid battery charger for car and home use. (These extra items I have no problem with. The [redacted] HVR-A1U Professional HDV Camcorder (DEMO) in case was cannibalized when they sent it to me. It lacked a [redacted] microphone #[redacted], [redacted] input jack [redacted], and the black filter that covers the lens. I tried calling [redacted], but could not get a hold of him after numerous times. I talked to jack at PH# ###-###-#### Ext. [redacted]. He informed me only the camera was sold for 1500.00 dollars, in which, I was told it was worth 2500.00 dollars (on sale for 1500.00). [redacted] tried to sell me a microphone for 400.00 dollars and input jack for 300.00 dollars. Both are worth 1100.00 on open market. Last two they have so I would need to make the purchase immediately. I had no money on credit card ([redacted]) since I maxed it out buying the camcorder and accessories. So I called [redacted] parts, they informed me it would cost 255.00 dollars for [redacted] microphone and 21.05 dollars for the input jacks. 42 photo tried to sell me the most expensive items they have. I did not know I was buying a cannibalized camcorder.Desired Settlement: My desire when I bought the camcorder was I was getting all the parts to it. Request 42photo send the other parts to the camcorder.

Hello, just to let you know, I have been a customer of 42nd street Photo since I bought my first SLR (Minolta 102) in the very late '70s; so that should tell you that I am a very satisfied customer. They have always offered and stocked the best equipment at the best prices. I am out of the NYC area now in SC, but when I needed a new lens for my digital camera, 42nd had what I was looking for at the best price. I received the order through overnight carrier in excellent condition packaged properly and found to my surprise a few free goodies for the lens. Obviously, I highly recommend 42nd street !

Review: I ordered a Canon 6D camera (body only) from the 42nd Street Photo website on July ** for the advertised price of $1129. On July ** I decided to order a Black Rapid Camera strap for $49.99. A sales rep called me and asked if I wanted them to be shipped together. I agreed and he asked if I knew I had ordered an International version of that camera, that would not have a Canon Warranty. I asked about the WiFi and GPS features and he said the international version had them, but would not work in the US. If I wanted to order the US version, it was $1399 and he could ship it that day. The package arrived on July ** by priority mail. The camera was in a Canon EOS 6D plus 24-105 lens kit box, but the lens had been removed. I expected a new camera in a camera only box, not an Open Box at a new market price. Bait and switch #1. Then we inspected the camera strap and it is a cheap knockoff, not the one shown on their website and listed on the invoice. It is definitely not a Black Rapid camera strap. Bait and switch #2. Now they say that there is a 20% restocking fee on returns, which is outrageous, when I have been deceived two times. Trying to talk to someone is a complete waste. I am ignored. They are using their 40 years in business to get people to use them and I was duped into thinking they were to be trusted to deliver what I ordered. My credit card company has been notified that I am disputing the charge. I wish I had contacted this bureau before I did business with 42nd Street Photo. With the 20% restocking fee, I'm sure that many people don't try to get a refund. The advertising is misleading and after further thought, I don't want to do business with a company that uses these selling methods. I demand a full refund.Desired Settlement: I am requesting a full refund.

Review: We purchased a camera lens on 1/**/2015 from 42nd Street Photos online website,[redacted]. On 1/**/2015, we received a phone call from a man named [redacted] asking to speak with my wife. [redacted] claimed my wife failed to fill out the signature portion of the order for a signature upon delivery of the product. He then proceeded to tell me wife she needed a 3 piece filter kit for the lens. My wife asked to call him back so she could check the filters out online. Once my wife stated that, [redacted] proceeded to haggle the price of the lens to make the purchase sound sweeter. My wife agreed at this point. My wife hung up the phone and said she felt confused and as if someone had just pulled something crooked on her. I called the number back that [redacted] called from. I asked [redacted] what just took place and he explained that the lens needs filters and he reduced the lens price more because he still had room to lower the price. I then asked if the lens came with a manufacturers warranty and [redacted] stated "No" because its an import. Immediately after I hung up the phone I didn't like what I had heard and it appeared that I was being sold a GREY market lens. I called [redacted] right back and told him to cancel the order. [redacted] said no problem, hold on while I go in the back. I was on hold for about 1 minute when [redacted] came back on and said I can't cancel it because its already on the belt for processing but thats ok you can just return it. I asked if there was a restocking fee and [redacted] said "yes, 20%". I preceded to demand that [redacted] go get my package from processing and cancel my order. [redacted] preceded to get irate saying "Are you ordering me to do something" and I said yes go get my order and cancel it. I asked for him to cancel the package pick up from [redacted] and he refused. I asked to speak to the [redacted] and [redacted] said he was the [redacted] and refused to give me his last name. At one point [redacted] threatened that I was on a recorded line at which point I stated great I hope someone can hear how crooked this is. This company is selling GREY market products.

I contacted CHASE, the holder of my card and filed a dispute claim until this is resolved. I contacted [redacted] to see if they could cancel the pick up of the package from the Bussiness and they stated without the tracking information which has not been provided as of yet they could not. [redacted] advised me to just refuse delivery of the package and return it to sender.Desired Settlement: 1. Accept [redacted] package that will be in transit back to shipper. 2. Reverse All Charges $1,028.99 in 24 hours 3. Provide binding communication representing full refund..

Review: This complaint involves both sales and customer service concerns. My wife contacted the business after seeing an advertisement for a particular camera and lens on their website. She wanted to purchase the items without the warranty as she was expecting to purchase coverage elsewhere but was told that the items without warranties were out of stock and only those with the store warranty were available. She was then told there was a special deal at the store in which she could buy a 3 year camera warranty for $300.00 and have it automatically upgraded to a 5 year warranty. The lens warranty would be included free.

Because her cell phone was cutting out multiple times, she excused herself and asked that the salesperson, Jack, email her the confirmation details before placing the order. Instead, the order was placed and our credit card was charged. When we got an emailed invoice we saw that we were charged $200.00 more than what we were quoted. The items came in the mail as expected and were in good condition but the warranty cards were separate, stand-alone items. No one ever explained why the equipment was not able to be sold without warranties like we initially requested.

My wife immediately emailed Jack to correct the charges and send an updated invoice but there was no email response. She and I both called and left voicemails but there was no phone reply. We repeatedly tried contacting the store for two weeks but heard nothing. It wasn't until we both left strong negative reviews on [redacted] and [redacted] that Elliot B[redacted], owner, contacted us. When I spoke to him on the phone, he was rude and condescending, referring to the "bible" of a review that he had in front of him and asking what we wanted to do about it. He refused to acknowledge fault for any of the incorrect charges or misinformation given, for his staff's inability to respond to our initial emails and phone calls, or admit that Jack could have possibly told my wife what she did in fact hear. When I asked why we hadn't heard anything from them until after our negative reviews he said that Jack had tried reaching out to us (he hadn't). His excuse was that Jack had indeed called us but that he didn't like to leave voicemails. I asked why Jack didn't email us then, if that was the case. Elliot said that HE's talking to me now.

When I mentioned that I had read the vast number of negative reviews of their shop and saw that this was apparent standard practice I questioned whether Jack had intentionally misled and mischarged my wife. He yelled that "that's [redacted]!" He threatened to not address our concerns or help solve the problem unless we changed our review and I told him I wouldn't take it down because it was the truth. We hung up with him saying he would have to "see what he can do."

2 weeks later I called back and he again repeated that in no way was Jack wrong and, in no way could he have made a mistake, implying it was my wife who misheard and agreed to the terms. He said that bottom line, he could get us the 5 year warranty or $200 return. He ended the conversation by saying that he'd like us to change our negative reviews. He added that he didn't think we would have left a positive review even if we were happy with the service and that we were only focusing on the negatives.

What my wife was originally told on the phone was a 5-year warranty for $300.00. He is willing to compromise on a 5-year warranty for $500.00.Desired Settlement: We would like to return the 3-year warranty cards we have for 5-year warranty cards as well as the $200.00 extra that we were billed.

As mentioned earlier, my wife did not want any warranties to begin with. We were sent 3-year, instead of 5-year, and overcharged $200.00 for them anyway.

Review: I ordered from 42nd St. Photo a Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS Lens. 42nd St. Photo sent me a defective lens. The lens was an imported lens (not disclosed on purchase) which came in a white box (rather than the manufacturer's box), had a warranty card for a Digital Camera without a serial number, and had a poorly photocopied user manual. The day after receiving the lens, I called 42nd Photo to ask to return the merchandise and the "manager" informed me that no refund would be coming unless I sent them a money order for 20% as a "restocking fee". As the lens is defective, I see no reason that the lens should be restocked. I requested a RMA multiple times and was continually told that he would not send an RMA without me first sending a money order.

The person on the phone was belligerent and made fun of me. When I asked his name he said "Billy Bob Thornton".

The person offered that he could replace the lens with another import lens, which I said was unacceptable. Rather than continue the conversation, he hung up the phone.Desired Settlement: I would like to return the lens and the filters they sent to go with it, which are still unopened, to 42nd St Photo and receive a full refund.

Review: We ordered a Nikon D610 camera for $1,050 that was to be delivered within 48 hours of ordering. After a week passed and we had not received the camera, we contacted 42nd Street photo to inquire where the order was. We were informed at that time that the camera was not available and would be 6-8 weeks back ordered. We were offered to upgrade to a US Nikon D610 with a three year Nikon warranty and a extra battery for an additional 350.00. We went ahead a agreed to the "upgrade". When the camera arrived we contacted Nikon directly to verify camera serial number and warranty. We were informed by Nikon that the serial number was not a recorded, nor recognized by Nikon. Nikon would not honor camera or warranty. We then contacted 42nd Street Photo again to return the camera for a full refund. They offered to do a second upgrade for another additional $300 for a camera verified by Nikon. We said we wanted to just return for a full refund. They informed us at that time there would be a 20% restocking fee and shipping charges which totaled $320.00 estimated by Adam. We simply ordered a US Nikon camera and this has been a nightmare. Once we left a negative google review, they have called numerous times a day harassing and threatening us to remove the review. We simply want a return shipping label from 42nd street photo, and a full refund.Desired Settlement: A full refund of $1,399.98 and for the harassing and threatening phone calls to stop!

Review: I purchased a Sigma 150mm f/2.8 macro lens on the 42nd Street Photo website. The lens was being promoted as brand new (no clarification that this was grey market merchandise). I then received a call from a sales rep the following day to confirm my order. The rep asked me why did I decide to go with a grey market lens. I told him that their website didn't specify that the item was grey market. The rep proceeded to sell me a US warranty on the lens for more money. When I refused and told him to cancel the order, the rep told me that the US warranty is included at no extra charge and they rather not loose my business. I received the lens 2 days later and everything seem fine. I emailed Sigma of America with the serial number of the lens to confirm the warranty. Sigma of America returned my email stating that 42nd Street Photo is not an official Sigma dealer and the item sold to me is grey market and has no warranty.Desired Settlement: I want a store one year warranty from 42nd Street Photo in a written document in the event of any mechanical problems with the lens to cover repairs or replacement at no additional cost to me.

Review: I ordered a Canon G7 X online for $459.00 and an extended warranty for $169.99. The day after my order I received a call from 42nd Photo saying that I ordered the "import" model, being in the U.S. I wanted the "U.S." model. The man on the phone said the "U.S." model would cost extra. Later in night I tried to cancel my order since I didn't want to pay that much and deal with these people in the future. Any company that pulls a bait-and-switch like this is not a company I want to deal with in the future. I tried calling the store to cancel my order and they kept transferring me to a line that never had anyone on the other end.Desired Settlement: I would like a full refund of $769.98.

Sincerely,

Review: We contacted 42nd street photo about Nikon 70-200 2.8 lens.. they advertised that lens for SALE price of $2,099. This price is reduced from the normal nationally advertised price. Immediately we asked is this USA MFG warrantied product. [redacted] EXT [redacted] Advised that this was imported product.. Imported product is a violation of the MFG's policy and no Warranty will be honored. . We told [redacted] that we were only interested in USA MFG Warrantied product.. and if they had that to sell.. We were told no problem and that the price was obviously more.. At this time we confirmed USA MFG product.. [redacted] raised the price to 2,349.99 offered us a filter for additional 99 dollars. Again we advised we were ONLY interested in purchasing NIKON USA MFG WARRANTIED PRODUCT. We selected shipping options and placed the order.. I advised one of my staff we purchased the product from 42nd street photo and they had heard some bad things about them in the photo industry and advised me to contact the company again to check they were authorized to sell Nikon product and in fact we would get what was represented. I was advised when checking the order by another sales person that in FACT we were just charged more money for the advertised GRAY market imported lens. So they lied FLAT out and told us we had to pay more for the US lens, Just made the price higher and sold us the Import lens. They line itemized "authorized 3 year Extended world wide warranty value under 2500 for lens." with no price.. When we asked for a [redacted], we were pretty much told this is "how its going to be" The company hung up on me and my employees... We demanded they stop the shipment that it was FRAUD to represent US NIKON product and ship something different.. Again they resorted to lies.. WE cant stop the package. the lies continue with, you cant refuse the package, it will not be accepted back and it will just go back and forth.. They tried to do everything they could to force us to accept the package.. Their objective is to get a signature and stick us with this Imported Unauthorized product. At this point we had not even received a confirmation email.. Nor a tracking number.. later we received that. On another call we advised we would dispute the charges and contact UPS which we did, UPS has stopped the package and its in transit back to them.. At this time they advise us we would be charged 20 percent restocking fee on a package of fraudulently represented product that we will never receive, will never get to our door.. This situation is outrageous.. We consider this company to have committed FRAUD..Desired Settlement: 1. Accept UPS package that is in transit back to shipper.

2. Reverse All Charges 2,525.93 in 24 hours

3. Provide binding communication representing full refund..

Review: I recently ordered a camera for my granddaughter from 42photo.com, the cost was $421.93. The monies cleared from my account, so I assumed the product was on its way. Earlier this week, and employee from 42 St Photo called to press me into buying additional service and parts for the camera. I have not been well, and I am in the process of having major [redacted] work done on my [redacted] so, I am in pain.

He insisted on my adding more memory to the camera, and it will only cost $40.00 more, so to get him off the phone I say OK. Then he went on to say with a few more dollars I can get this and that,....I said no and told him he was very well taking advantage of my physical weakened condition. I said good by and hung up.

Upon my checking my account today, not only did they deduct the $421.93, they deducted and additional $122. dollars from my account.

I called four times this morning and kept getting passed around once, message taken and they hear the story or put on hold for a very long time.Desired Settlement: I would like the monies owed to me returned. I only authorized $40.00 memory upgrade on the camera. NOTHING ELSE.

Sincerely,

Review: Purchased a Nikon D5200 Digital SLR Camera from an Online Black Friday Sale of 42nd street photo's website for $649.99

Received both an email and phone message that I had to contact [redacted] at ext 5009.

Briefly [redacted] tried to sell me additional merchandise that I did not want, namely an extra long life battery and a extended warranty.

[redacted] then went into the memory card, in that the camera did not come with one but they could sell me one and he went into their specials. As I have never owned this technology I was unfamiliar with these cards but trusted the sales rep and agree on one.

He then tells me How about I throw in the warranty for another $5 and we will call it $730. I agree.

When the camera arrives: I get the camera, the warranty and the extended long life battery BUT No Memory card. And extra charges totaling approx $190, So my $650 camera is now $840?

$730 for the camera with memory card (that they didn't send) and warranty and $110 for a battery I never ever wanted and never agreed to purchase.

I never receive a memory card (and the camera won't work without one), and it's not even listed on the receipt. Clearly [redacted] has bait and switched the memory card in an attempt to charge me $80 for a warranty that I never really wanted but was supposed to be an extra $5

So we have a fraudulent charge on the $110 battery and a bait and switch on the memory card/warrantyDesired Settlement: Refund the entire amount of the bogus charges.

To date I have received a refund for the battery but they will not refund me for the memory card they sold me and charged me for but didn't send me until I return the battery I didn't want and didn't authorize them to charge me for.

I don't understand why I should be forced to return this at my expense when it is all clearly their mistake, and at this point it seems that this is the way these people do business. Additionally, I am concerned that even if I do return the battery at this point they will never give me back the money they illegally charged me for. Also to get the return information I have to speak with Adam, the person who caused this mess. I don't want to talk to Adam ever again. I certainly will never do business with this place again.

Review: Base on the information provided on the 42photo.com, I taught I was getting a better deal ,so I proceeded to order a Panasonic gh4 camera on September **,2015. However, I received an email from them on the September **, 2015, saying that they needed additional information from me to proceed with the purchase. I called the customer care rep, however he told me that the product I was ordering was a Chinese model and that I had to pay more for the international model (This information was not provided on the website). I decided to cancel the order due to the obvious bait and switch fraud. To make matters worst , after checking my bank account, I was charged for the camera even though the company stated on their website that no charges will be made until the product is ready to be shipped. Also, I checked the user account I have with them (42photo.com) and it showed a cancelled order invoice for $1,399.99,yet my order confirmation invoice sent by email showed a cost of $1267.30. Plus no order cancellation was sent to me via email.Desired Settlement: Full Refund of payment to my bank account by September **, 2015

They charged my credit card immediately and the email stated the item would be shipped with 24-48 hours. The next day I received another email stating they needed additional information to proceed with my purchase. He then stated the shipment would go out that day and I would receive an email from [redacted] with the tracking number. 8 days later still no tracking number email and no package. Still no package, no email. I have called again to see if I can get a refund and they do not answer the phone. My other concern is that gray market products are usually cheaper, but my invoice indicates I purchased the camera for $699.99. Nikon sells it for $599.99. I cannot get in touch with the salesperson [redacted] who I was told by 42nd photo is the only one who can give me a breakdown of the invoice. I do not want a gray market product that I paid $700 for without any type of guarantee that the warranty is valid AND without a breakdown of the invoice. The online price is $569.00 this includes:EN-EL23 Rechargeable Lithium-Ion BatterEH-71P Charging AC AdapterAN-CP21 StrapLC-CP29 Lens CapUC-E21 USB Type-A Male to Type-B Micro Male Cable (Black) Free shippingI would like a breakdown of the invoice as to what I paid an extra $130.00 for. I did call the store again today and was told when I asked to speak to the [redacted] that they don't have an [redacted] & the person who answered the phone has never even seen anyone who might be the [redacted]. This business should really be shut down.

Review: I purchased a Canon G7X (Order # [redacted] ) price of $449.00 from the 42ndPhoto.com website on Sep **, 2015. Few days later, I got a phone call from their rep (Jack ) stating the camera which I purchased was an international version and there is NO WARRANTY if I were to purchase the camera. I immediately told him this had to be a mistake because ANY WHERE and NO WHERE in the product description on their site was there any mention of this being a grey market/international model. The rep then said “There is, you just missed it” and he has a US model with warranty for $100.99 MORE and if I were to order right then and there he’d ship it out the same day. I naively accepted the US version. The package arrived 9 days later. I went back to their web again how and where I missed that information. I spent an hour to look for that information. I still can’t find about ordering Europe model anywhere. I googled about this company. There are tens of same type of complain against this company. This is terrible business practice! I'm demanding a refund. I would like to get $100.99 refunded.Desired Settlement: I would like to have $100.99 refunded.

Review: This business is a scam. I first looked up reviews and saw mainly positive ones. Once I placed a $1,300 order, they called needing a different credit card number. The next day I rechecked reviews adding the word scam on it and found everything about this business was a scam. Then when I tried to call and cancel the order they transferred to Jack who isn't there ever. So now I can't get it cancelled or my money back.Desired Settlement: I just wanted my money back or the ordered cancelled neither I was able to do.

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID# [redacted], and have determined that my complaint has NOT been resolved because:

They would not allow me to cancel the order. They said it had shipped, so I asked for an email. They said they have 1,000 of orders and that they couldn't send me an email. But they didn't have a problem sending me an email needing another credit card number. I needed something that said the order was shipped. When I try and track it there is no way to track it, it just takes me to the order.

Review: On June *, 2015 I made an order of a camera (Canon 6d) at [redacted] for $1,749.00 with a 1 day express mail and an extra year of warranty with manufacturer. For some reason order was on pending status on [redacted], after a while I receive a call from seller, explaining that the camera I just bought was an "old version and a import model" that it did not come with the 1 year US warranty and it didn’t have gps and wifi, that if I wanted those features and the 1 year manufacture warranty he could add them to the order for an extra $200.00, besides that he offers an upgrade to the lenses for another $200.00, I said I didn’t wanted it because it was a lot of money and I wanted to cancel my order. The seller didn’t want to cancel the order so instead he offers a free gift (memory sd card “$120.00 value”), I ended up accepting. When I went online to check on the lenses upgrade, the lenses he offered me where a low quality compared to original and it was overprice, so I called the seller asking for original lenses and the $200.00 back, seller said that he could change the lenses back to original but he couldn’t return the $200.00 cause the $2,100.00 was the final price on item. Since I’m still having doubts on the order, I checked the original invoice and read the description on camera, the camera already included wifi and gps from the beginning and I’m paying $400.00 extra for these features. I called back the seller, his started using strong language trying to intimidate. I wanted to cancel my order and the seller said he couldn’t do anything, that I have to wait for package to arrive and send it back if I don’t want it but I have to pay an extra 20% restocking fee. Then he hang up without finishing the conversation.

Today is June *, 2015, I still haven’t received the camera, and delivery is scheduled for June *, 2015, even though I pay for 1 day express mail. I called the seller to adjust price that I paid for the shipping and he refused.

I want my full payment back, this is fraud.Desired Settlement: I want a full refound. This people have to stop this sales technique to defraud many others in the same manner.

I strongly urge someone from the State of NY visit this location and further investigate their sales practices as they are clearly unfair, deceptive and abusive.

[Your Answer Here]

I accept the change of the lens along with the refund of the difference they made me pay for the previous lens. The seller refused to refund the money. I asked to cancel the order and also refused. Also requested refund for the payment I made for fast delivery ([redacted]) that was made to me by [redacted] ground. The seller also refused to make refund.Currently I received the camera today june *, 2015.I bought a camera which was announced entirely new.when I open the package shows signs of use as wrappers were open, one of the cables did not have its package, the lens did not come in original packaging. The most important thing is that the camera did not bring the original warranty papers with information and serial number, the lens did not bring his papers with warranty information and serial number. I contacted the company of the camera (CANON) they told me that every article of canon brings your warranty information and the serial number printed on the paper.

the seller contacted me telling me that the papers were original warranty, this is not true since the original papers have warranty information on each item with its serial number printed.
