Crunch Fitness Reviews (390)

I signed up in Charleston crunch fitness online November 2016 and on the email they to notify me once they open. By January 23rd they opened but was not able to go. By March 16th, I called to cancel my membership, I told the manager that I had never stepped in the gym so he told me to send an email regarding my request to cancel which I did. March 28th I was charged of the membership fee and another month's fee so I called them and they told me that it takes 30 days to get my cancellation to get cleared. And they were saying that after the 3rd month of membership that I will get charge for the annual fee but the gym did not opened till January, so I should have been covered and should have not been charged of the annual fee.

I signed up for crunch fitness in Somerset New Jersey and was pretty happy they opened a gym in the area that offered classes for me to take. I was scheduled for a kickoff secession but had to cancel it due to a death in the family and rescheduled it for the day we returned, January 23. I met with the Trainer, and he explained that I could potently sign up for secessions at $35.00 each for 30 minutes which actually sounded pretty good. By the end of our workout, I had gotten ill and the manager, Terrin, came over to help me. We walked outside at which point I really got sick. After getting it all out, I went to sit in his office and we talked for a few. I had casually mentioned that I was considering signing up for Personal Training it never committed to it. After I felt better, I went out and before I knew it was signing the electronic signature pad for 8, 60 minute personal training secessions and was billed $480.00. After seeing the charge I contacted the gym to cancel the service before beginning and to obtain a refund for it as I was not prepared to pay that amount. It was only then that I was told by and employee named Ethan "oh Personal Training and anything associated with it has a non-refundable fee policy." When I reached out to Terrin, the Manager and explained the situation and told him that if I was made aware of this prior I would have been more conscientious about what I was signing. He then simply said "well it's in the agreement that you signed(which I never saw but was summarized and the non refundable part was conviently left out). But you can move the appointments to month!" I don't want to move them to another month, I simply want my $480 back, and I will continue my membership and no further action will be take. At this point however I am prepared to take legal action as my mother is an attorney and my uncle is a US Congressman in New York, which just so happens to be where the corporate office is located. So I have access to all the legal and political assets to take a $480 refund very far if need be.

If I could simply get my $480 for services that were NEVER rendered then this ends there. But if not, my family and I are prepared to go further with this as information was withheld and is not present on the organizations website, nor is a refund policy clearly stated or displayed for patrons to see. I am hoping that someone from the corporate office can rectify the situation and give me my $480 back so it doesn't go further, but we are very much prepared to do so.

Hey, I am going through a similar situation. How did you solve this? My problem is with 38th St location. I am trying to get my money back for sessions I didn't use, but they are using every excuse on the book to not give it back to me.
I am trying to see if I can take any legal action here but I don't have the agreement with me since they never gave it to me.

I signed up for Crunch and was rather excited to begin using the facility. On the day of my kickoff I worked with the trainer and ended up getting sick. Before leaving though I had talked to them about possibly signing up for more one-on-one secessions. Not long after I was signing a volunteer agreement for Personal Training. A few days later after much thought, I decided Personal Training wouldn't be for me at the moment. I called WELL in advance of my start date to cancel and obtain a refund and was told they don't give refunds for personal Training. This was not something discussed or highlighted when signing up, nor does the website mention anything pertaining to this fact. I have decided to take legal action, fortunately for me my grandfather is a prominent attorney who will be helping me, so no legal fees associated. I will be fighting for the $500 paid for the services never rendered, as well as the taking advantage while I was sick and trying to leave. A simple refund would solve the problem, especially since the company did not deliever the service and I had to pre-pay. Lesson learned, never pre pay for ANYTHING ever again.

Review: I was a member of Crunch Fitness and was told while signing a contract, that if I cancelled my membership within 60 days, that I was not accountable for the annual fee of $39.99. W[redacted] that deadline was 7/23/2016 and I cancelled 7/16/2016. Crunch Fitness in Monroeville then told me that because as written in the contract, if you do not cancel within a 10 day period of your billing date(7/23/2016), you have to pay the monthly and annual fee. I understand that I should pay the monthly fee of $10, it is written in the contract. However, I read through the contract and it says nothing about paying the annual fee if you do not cancel within the 10 days of your contract, only the date it will be billed on, which I cancelled my membership 1 week before. I also talked to a manager in Monroeville named Haley on 7/20/2016, who informed me that they would reimburse me the $39.99 fee once Brandon Bell, the regional manager returned.

I talked to the Regional Manager today 7/25/2016 and he acted oblivious to the conversation.Desired Settlement: I would like reimbursed the $39.99 that was taken out of my checking account.

I’m responding to the complaint [redacted] in regards to his CrunchFitness member account. [redacted] cancelled his membership but was to be billed within 10 days. As per ourcontract agreement any EFT payments scheduled to bill within 10 days of cancellation will be debited. Ihave attached a copy of [redacted]’s agreement for your review. I believe you will find that Crunch Fitness wasw[redacted] within their rights to debit his account for the monthly and annual fee dues. Thank you for yourtime and consideration in settling this matter.Thank You,Brandon B[redacted] (Regional Manager)Crunch Fitness (Monroeville and Waterfront)

Review: I tried to cancel my membership multiple times with the company and every time I do I get told a different story. I first went in in person to cancel and was told I needed to pay the current month charges, which I had no problem. I also had to update my debit card as a new one was issued with new CVC code and expiration date. I was told I needed to speak with the manager in person, send a letter or fax a letter. I asked to have them provide me with paper and I will leave the letter. I was told they aren't allowed to do that. I then asked for the fax number to send the letter I was told I couldn't do that. At this point I became agitated as I just wanted to cancel my membership. I was told the manager would be back the next day and I could call in. I left angry and wasn't providing them with my updated billing information. I wait a few days to settle down and not be frustrated. In those few days I have received multiple calls from [redacted] automated line saying I need to speak with them about my crunch fitness account. I ignored the calls. I figured if I had to wait after I wasted time and gas to drive to the gym they can wait. I called the gym and was told the manager was helping someone else and they will take my name and number and she will call me back. Two hours later I called back after I received no call back and I figured she was going to be leaving as I was told she left at 7pm. When I spoke with her she said I need to either stop in or send a letter. I asked to fax the letter and she said they don't have a fax machine. Once again agrivated cause I am told now something different I say ok and disconnect the call.

I am not paying the last month fee for the gym. I tried to stop in to cancel and waste 20 minutes as one employee was eating her Chinese food in my face and the other kept saying I needed to do this or this or this. I wasn't driving back to waste more time.Desired Settlement: I want the business to have their 3rd party company [redacted] using a auto diaper to stop calling my cell phone without my permission. In addition I want the gym to cancel my membership. I also would like the business to work with their 3rd party agency about debt collections and automatic dialers. It is a TCPA violation to make calls to a cell phone for a debt.

Review: Back in July I went to this Gym in Person to Cancel, they told me I had to go in person when I called in. I was aware I still had to pay aug and sept but I continued being charged from there on. So I did go in person, however the person in front desk searched my info and told me I was all set. They did not have me sign any documents. I continues seeing charges to my account, and when I called them they told me this had not been cancelled and had been placed in collections due to non payment. I contacted the collection dept they gave me to call, and they said they would settle my account if I just paid for $75. I let them know I would not pay since this was an error of the gym not giving me proper cancellation notices and misleading. Please solve this situation as soon as possible. This is the second complaint I am submitting. Thank you.Desired Settlement: DesiredSettlementID: Other (requires explanation)

Have this removed from collections as an error on their end, this is affecting my credit!

Hello [redacted], Thank you for taking time out to speak with me today regarding your billing situation and apologize for any frustration this issues has caused you as it is never our intent. Your biller at this time is not Crunch but instead, [redacted]. They will be able to provide you with the assistance you seek. Best, [redacted]

Review: I was a member of Crunch several years ago and let the membership lapse. However, they continued to try and bill a non-valid credit card, and apparently ran up over $300 in "charges". They failed to notify me via mail in any timely manner, and the first indication I received is a collection notice for $342 from [redacted] Such shady practices, failure to notify, and attempt to damage my credit is unethical and illegal.Desired Settlement: Verify "cancelling" my membership and erase the $342 in fradulent charges.

Response:

Hi there [redacted], Thank you for reaching out! I apologize for any frustration resulting from this matter as it is not our intent to do so. You mention in your complaint you had "let the membership lapse" which doesn't sound like you actually canceled in writing. Would you be so kind as to forward the cancellation confirmation email or a copy of the cancellation form signed by a [redacted]r? Please forward the documentation to my email: [redacted] Best, [redacted]Crunch

Review: I am deeply disappointed with Crunch.

I cancelled my membership on March [redacted] and then my card was charged March [redacted] for $86.

This is an unacceptable business practice. I spoke with several representatives on March *, 2014 and they told me that they had to bill me even though I had paid upfront for my last month at Crunch. Now I have paid for this month and my last month even though I cancelled my membership for this month. Speaking with the reps at Crunch got me NOWHERE.

Thank you for your assistance!Desired Settlement: I just want the $86 back that was unfairly charged after I had cancelled my membership. Thank you!

Business

Response:

We apologize for any frustrations regarding the closure of this account. As per the cancellation policy described in Section ([redacted]) of the agreement (attached) for this membership, any member requesting cancellation must "pay in full any unpaid dues or indebtedness incurred prior to the cancellation date". The request for cancellation was placed on the [redacted] of March, whereas the monthly dues for March had already been billed as of the [redacted] of March. The balance collected was valid. As these policies must be upheld and enforced across the board in fairness to all members, no adjustments are warranted here.

Thank you.

Review: I cancelled my membership with Crunch five months ago and was told that after my month was over my membership would deactivate and I wouldn't be charged further. The credit card I have on file I had closed and then I receive a notice in the mail I owe them money, I contacted the gym and explained the situation and they had me leave a message for a membership coordinator. Over the past few months they have continued to try and charge my account and are now harassing me three times a day on the phone. Each time I speak with someone I keep getting a different story about the appropriate way to cancel a membership with this company. I was told I would be sent a form to fill out via email but never received it. When I speak with collections people I get told they only handle collections and cannot help me. Seriously, this is the worst business practice in the book, trying to squeeze out a few extra months of a membership. You are not getting paid because I don't owe you anything. I originally cancelled because my work partnered with a gym and offered a more affordable option for me and I would have greatly considered going back but now I can guarantee I will never step foot inside a Crunch Gym as long as I live.Desired Settlement: Stop trying to claim money you have no right to be claiming and stop harassing me. You as a company have lost nothing as I haven't been to your gym since I cancelled my agreement for the obvious reason.

Hello,

Review: Crunch Fitness in Bushwick is never opening. Yet they have taken money from people who want to be members of their gym. The excuse is that they don't have the permits yet. Then why take peoples money? This was in AUGUST 2014 that I signed up. Here we are about to ring in the New Year and I'm still not on the tread mill. What makes matters worse is that when I called to ask what the delay was and when they would open, they couldn't/wouldnt give me an answer. All they offered me was a WEEK PASS!!How am I to use it if the gym is not even opened yet? I do not live close to another Crunch and I should not HAVE to hop on the MTA to go to a different location just because this one is incompetent. Its literally 10-15 minutes from me.And furthermore, what I PAID for is not a WEEK but my first month plus registration fee. It wasn't a lot of money but the fact that they even TOOK it from me and "signed me up" is what is making this so suspicious.Quite frankly Crunch is now on the DO NOT SUPPORT list in my book, but I cannot let this go unchecked. I will be filing a complaint with all possible outlets. Thanks for your time!Bianca DDesired Settlement: A full refund of the money that I paid to Crunch Fitness for membership.

Response:

Sorry for any frustrations here, as the club opening is indeed postponed due to reasons uncontrollable by Crunch. The facility is essentially ready to open doors, and Crunch is as eager as all members awaiting opening day. A full refund of $49.62 will be sent in the form of a check to the address provided in this complaint in approximately 15-20 business days.

Review: On the initial date that I opened the account I was told that the payment would be collected on the third of each month. I contacted the billing department on 8/*/2015 to have the account closed, I was informed by the representative that the account must be closed 30 prior.

Each month Crunch fitness deducts the amount on different dates other then the [redacted] of each month. Then I am forced to pay overdraft fees exceeding the $20.00 for the membership therefore it is not worth it for me to keep the membership. Plus next door to the crunch the opera house hotel has a disease called LEGIONNAIRES in the vents.Desired Settlement: 1. Cancel membership without the fee for the month of August

Response:

Good afternoon [redacted], Thank you for reaching out and apologize for your frustrations. As noted in our agreements, Crunch bills on the [redacted] of each month with confirmed transactions posted on the 3rd. I have reviewed your billing history and see we have not billed you on random days however, we did have an issue billing the card on file in June and September of 2014, February, March, April and May of 2015. If you would like to see what the error code is for these months, please email me at: [redacted]. We have not received a cancellation request from you which would justify the charge for August which is now due. Please cancel your membership either in your club or via our hotline (toll-free number can be found in your agreement). You can request a history of charges/payments by emailing me. Thank you and have a wonderful day. Best, Jasmine V[redacted]

Review: I signed up for crunch fitness during one of it's promotions. I did not go into crunch fitness to complete the process. My card was charged in May. They tried to charge my card again in June but I blocked it. Today I get an email stating that they took 93.95 out of my account. I did not authorize this deduction. I called and the staff person stated that in their system I owe 63.95. I reminded him that an extra $30 was taken out. That is THEFT.Desired Settlement: I want a refund and I want my "membership" canceled.

That is not resolving the issue. If they do not call me in the 6 day window then my complaint goes away. I want this handled. I want my money back and my account closed. Review: My wife signed up for a membership and Crunchy Gym. It was a month-to-month arrangement that could be cancelled at any time. She also added our daughter to her account for an additional monthly fee. Our daughter never signed a contract for a membership. She was and is under the age of **.My wife decided that a gym setting was not for her and our daughter lost interest as well. My wife went into gym and signed paperwork to cancel both memberships. For some reason, they cancelled my wife's membership and failed to cancel our daughter's membership. After a while, started sending collection emails to our daughter. I called them to dispute the debt and instructed them not to contact my daughter again. Then falsely claimed to have no record of the cancellation.Desired Settlement: We want them to stop contact my daughter, remove any negative information her credit report, stop all collection efforts and issue a letter of apology.

Review: Every time I bring a guest with me to my gym they make a photocopy of his Drivers license. The company policy states that the club hold onto the License while the member is working out. Once they are leaving they give back the guest their Driver License or ID. Why is it necessary to make 7 copies of on persons ID? I advised the [redacted] that what they are doing is illegal and made me fearful of identity theft. He said it's company policy (it's not I verified by calling all [redacted] and [redacted] crunch fitness clubs and speaking directly to each [redacted]) also claiming that he has permission from a cop friend of his to do so to prevent theft. How could there possibly be theft already occurring since it just recently opened and I've been going since day one of its opening and had to go through this unsettling ordealDesired Settlement: Stop them from possibly having one of its employees leak my information or use my information in identity theft. Make them follow their own company policy and stop violating the law just because he is a [redacted] who has a cop buddy and thinks he's above the law even though I've brought this matter up more than 4 times and its legality to just get laughed at in my face.

Response:

Each club is independently ownedand operated and have their own guidelines and procedures to protect the safety of their members, staff and guests. All guests in our clubs are asked to present photo ID upon entering the club. Just recently our club was a victim of theft in our locker room. A duo of a male & female perpetrators where stealing from various clubs in the area including Crunch Staten Island. Once this occurred we worked closely with the local NYPD precinct and through our efforts the NYPD was able to apprehend both of these thieves because we had copy of the photo IDs and our security cameras. The lead detective came to our club an applauded our safety and diligence in helping apprehend these individuals as they were doing this for quite some time.

Instead of holding an person’s ID we ask for a copy of an ID. Holding an ID could lead to a person forgetting to pick it up at the end of their workout. Our members and guest have embraced this and it has made a difference in our safety record and our customer service. Copies of ID are kept in a secure area and our club follows all PCI compliance guidelines to ensure that our members personal information is safe.

Offering guest usage is for Peak members is a privilege that all our members love. However some guest have elected to get their own membership so they don’t have to come every time with their friend.

They flipped their story. According to the [redacted] this was company policy and I proved them wrong, it's not no other club makes photocopied of ID's.. Now I'm hearing that it is just this clubs policy. You are a gym not a bank you guys don't know how to keep things secure I'm sorry even heard it from your own staff. I find it amazing that this is the only branch in all of [redacted] that does this and I should know I called every branch and confirmed with their [redacted]s. All the [redacted]s said that this procedure is outrageous and unethical because information will get lost on these guest because they aren't protected as much as members information is; also this leaves you open to a possible law suit if anyone's identity gets stolen, be aware of that. Just stick to the company policy that all other crunch clubs follow is all I'm asking.

Review: I've tried numerous times to cancel my membership. Explained my situation that I no longer reside in the area. Yet, I keep being charged fee, extra charges misc stuff added to an ongoing bill that should have been cancelled.

I was told this week, when I received another email that I needed to write a letter to cancel. I was upset and asked why I wasn't told about this beforehand. I asked to speak with a manager or supervisor and nobody was available. I asked if they could reduce the amount seeming that I was not given this information before and nothing. I called again today and he same no manager and no fee reduction.Desired Settlement: I would like to be able to cancel my membership and not owe anything since I attempted and tried to cancel it numerous times and failed due to the wrong information given to me.

Good evening [redacted], Thank you for reaching out and apologize for your frustrations as it is never our intent to do so. Per your note, you state you were not provided with the information to cancel your membership however, I beg to differ as your membership was purchased in-person on 3/**/2015 with all information on the ways to cancel including policy noted in your agreement. There is also a cancellation hotline number which is toll-free and noted within the agreement as well. On 7/**/15 you received a call from our billing department for your account which was already delinquent and per the recorded call you mentioned you attempted to cancel in a Corporate location but your membership is not a Corporate membership which is why your cancellation would not be accepted there and would not be valid. Unfortunately, at this time I must dismiss your claim as you were in receipt of the necessary information related to your membership account. Response:

Greetings.

We are sorry for any confusion regarding your membership with Crunch. As you had enrolled online for your membership last year during presale, you were prompted to click "I agree" to the terms and conditions of the agreement, which included all information regarding policies, monthly payments, and annual maintenance fees. The purchase would not have been allowed or processed if you had not chosen "I agree". The annual maintenance fee is charged three months following the first billing month, as described in the online terms and conditions you had agreed to, due to a billing schedule which ensures the member has reflected active status at least three months to incur the fee. This fee is non refundable, and was taken at the same time as your monthly dues, which are also non-refundable. Again, we are sorry for any inconvenience, but these charge are valid.

Review: Around May, 2013 Crunch Gym started advertising that a new location would be opening up in [redacted], close to where I live. I visited the location and talked to one of the representatives. He told me that they planned to open the gym in August. So I signed up online for the [redacted] location in July and paid the sign up fee. The email I received from Crunch gym stated that I should go to the location to get a key tag so I went there, but the office was closed. I called the number on the website, but I couldn’t talk to anyone. Someone called me back later and left me a message that this location would be open at the end of August. I went back to the location again in early September, but the facility was still closed.

After a while I learned that Crunch Gym didn’t have necessary permits to open up the [redacted] location so that the New York City Department of Buildings issued a work stop order to Crunch Gym in June, but still Crunch Gym said they were working on opening the [redacted] location sometime in November.

In December the facility still wasn't open, so I called the corporate office to cancel my membership and requested a full refund of the fee I initially paid when I joined. The lady I spoke with told me that I could cancel my membership, but they wouldn’t be able to refund the fee. I asked the lady why, but she just said they wouldn’t be able to. Instead she told me that I could transfer my membership to any crunch location I would like with the same monthly fee. I explained to her that the only reason I signed up for the [redacted] location was I lived in the neighborhood, and it would take me about 10 minutes to get there. And again I asked the lady if she knew when the gym would open, but she couldn’t say. She insisted that I should think about transferring my membership instead of canceling my membership, because Crunch wouldn’t be able to refund the money if I cancelled.

At this point I am seeking a complete cancellation of my membership and a full refund of the fee I paid.

When I signed up for membership and paid the fee on line, I was under the impression that Crunch Gym would be opening up a location in crown heights within a month. Their representatives claimed they would be opening up at the end of August. It was my expectation that I was signing up for a Crunch Gym location in my neighborhood which would be opening up in a month. It has now been 5 months and Crunch Gym is still unable to give me a opening date for the [redacted] location. It is terribly frustrating. Crunch Gym should refund the fee because they have not been able to deliver on what they promised at the time that I signed up. I have been terribly mislead by this company. I do not want to transfer my membership to another location. I do not want to have anything more to do with a company that treats its customers as I have been treated.Desired Settlement: I would like to cancel my membership and get a refund in the amount of $15.62 at once since Crunch Gym knew that they had problems opening up the [redacted] location back in June and they have failed to explain the situations to their members and haven’t been able to keep us updated on the issues

Response:

We are dearly sorry for any frustrations here. As we still do not have an exact opening date available to members, we will certainly process a cancellation and refund of all charges from enrollment. As your purchase was several months ago, the refund will need to be processed in the form of a check. Please be advised that a refund in the amount of $15.62 has been submitted for processing. At your earliest convenience, please email [redacted] with your current mailing address to ensure that the refund check is mailed to the correct location.

We hope to see you return to this location once doors have officially opened.

Thank you.
