24 Hour Fitness USA Inc Reviews (103)

This company jacked up the membership renewal fee up to 50% all of sudden this year without explaining anything. I have been a member since 2008 and am supposed to have a constant flat rate after 3 yrs full payment in the beginning. This is against the principles and it's a shame on this company. I don't think I am alone after reading the reviews. Let's join in hand to challenge this company's unfairly breaking the contract agreement.

The location in santa barbara is amazing. They are a super sport and it's about time. I am a Marine Corps vet with multiple issues. When I got out of the marine corps, it took me roughly 25min just to get out of bed in the morning but since I started going to 24 it has gotten so much better. I take yoga and use the jacuzzi and now it only takes me 5 minutes to get out of bed. Most of the guys that work there are military vets so I feel like this is the best place for me!!! 5 stars

I contacted 24 hour fitness back in December 2015 to place my account on a freeze for a few months since I was not utilizing my services. The representative told me she had processed my request and that I wouldn't be charged until my freeze was lifted in April. I checked my bank account and 2 payments have been processed for January and February. I called them to cancel my membership and get a refund for the months the charged me for. While the representative was extremely courtesy, they did not resolve my issue and told me the best they could do is to place my account on freeze and credit me a membership fee at the end of the freeze.

Called corporate to ask for the flat rate of $44.99 and access to all clubs and they said they will do it. I go to the gym the following day and my membership wasn't updated so I called again. When I called again they saw the changes to my plan and told me it wouldn't upgrade until the 15th. Now the 15th has passed they still charged me my old rate and I still don't have access to all clubs. So I called again and was told I had to pay first and last month to upgrade my plan, which I did. After I did that I got a call from corporate saying she was not allowed to do that and all they can give me is ten dollars off, which I'll still be paying more than the 44 flat fee. Corporate would not compromise even though I know people who are paying less than the flat fee. It seems Corporate does not care for their members and I will be canceling my membership if they don't fix this soon.

I've been a member of 24 Hour Fitness for over a decade. I signed up with the $600 package that gave 99/year for life. It all was working fine but the last time I went in they told me I was terminated in 2009. I asked to speak with the manager but after spending probably 20 minutes he wasn't able to get anywhere. I told him I'd go eat and come back. When I came back they had supposedly found my record but it had conveniently expired a month before instead of in December as usual. I asked why I had not received any notification. They said they had sent me two notices. I told them I had not received them. They checked the address for me and it was being sent to a city I had never lived in! Obviously they lost my records somehow and were trying to save face. The manager said I'd have to take it up with corporate. Corporate left if very simply telling me regardless of their bad records it was up to the customer to keep up with payments and told me they had a special where I could pay basically $500 for one year! I see some 700 and more complaints at consumer affairs about this issue of 24 Hour Fitness pruning the $99/yr members. Even the members like me that only use their facilities every other month. Apparently new bean counters in management figure they can take a heavy hand to milk out more from their customers.

Im a current Graduate student, I put my account on hold because of my education. I have tried several times now to speak with someone about my account. It seems that eventhough my account should have been on hold I have a balance due. I am ready to start back up, but I can't because I have a balance that should have been on hold. Trying to speak with someone about the issue has been a great hassle.

Signed up for 24 Hour Fitness membership 10 years ago under a deal where I pay for 3 years up front and then have a lifetime yearly fee of $49. Sales person was very specific about that. My bad for not reading the fine print of the contract and taking the salesperson's word. Today I got an invoice for $99. Not only was there not supposed to be any increase ... but the increase is more than 100%. Called customer service and was basically brushed off (they told me they would send me a copy of my contract where it says that membership fees can increase at their discretion). When I asked if I can get the address to send a complaint letter to ... was told there is no address!?!?!? Very disappointing. Overall the membership price is still a good deal ... but that's not the point. Will you still keep me as a customer? Maybe. Will I recommend the gym to anyone else. No! Would never recommend 24 Hour Fitness to anyone because of the way you have conducted business with me.

2006 lifetime membership with locked contractual rate of less than $50 and just received renewal notice of $165. Bait and switch. Cobtract to be sent but research done reveals 24hour diing this to all members. Contracts that are not being sent. Forced to take it or leave it. Deceptive bad poor customer service. Told still a good rate. East to see by customer service rep that they are handling a lot of these type of calls. New CEO and what happens?? Would love to see mass exodus.

Dont sign up with these crooks. A few months ago I signed up, stating clearly that I wanted a month to month membership with no contract. I was assured by the club manager that I was signing up for a month to month membership and could cancel at any time with no fees. However, recently I tried to cancel my membership and was told that I signed a 12 month contract and would need to pay the remainder of the contract and if I refused to pay they would send me to collections. I dont know whether they are simply incompetent or just plain crooks. Either way they're not to be trusted. Better to take your business elsewhere.

The last 7 times I have walked into this club, the people at the front desk have failed to give any simple greeting such as 'hi' or 'hello". Yesterday the male was taking to another customer and the female with the tattoos was staring blankly ahead. The day before that, the 4 people at the desk were talking to each other. Today the guy there was talking to a friend and said 'sign in with your phone number" because the fingerprint reader was broken. I want to know if this is a responsibility of the front desk to give a simple greeting to people. I feel once they collect someone as a member, they feel no need to extend any simple human courtesy with the utterance of the one syllable "hi". It leaves me upset after every time I walk into this place.

My 18 year daughter had put a freeze on her account that was somehow linked to my cancelled account and therefore my bank account. 24 Hour Fitness charged my account a monthly fee at the end of her freeze period without notifying me. When I calle dto ask for a refund they refused stating that they had notified my daughter. When I pointed out that they should have charged her bank account instead of mine, they said that when I initially signed up for my account I signed an agrement that authorized them to do this. This is just wrong and really unfair and unscrupulous business practices! It is not the amount I was wrongfully charged ($28.63), it is the principle. I will do everything in my power to make people awa re of their poor customer service and business ethics.

This club rips people off. They decided that I have cancelled my membership by a phone call and offered a more expensive membership. I said I never called to cancel; I would know! They said that that is what we have on our record. No letters were sent to our house, no phone calls. I didn't know it was cancelled until I went to the gym. One person said it was suspended, another said it was terminated. I spoke with the highest supervisor Mikey who just kept repeating himself that it was cancelled. I will never walk into another 24 hour fitness. Rude and unhelpful staff following the deceitful policies. One star is too much. I would give it a zero.

Not all clubs have the same problem: old equipment that isn't calibrated. This became a big issue when I moved to a neighborhood that had a club a mile from home. The place (paint, floor, equipment) looks outdated. One morning I thought I needed a tetanus shot when I left. The best club is 6 miles from me and I can't afford the membership+time+gas. Canceling a membership is easy for most businesses; 24 Hour Fitness requires you to speak ON-SITE with a manager, who works in the middle of the day (while you're at work) or to call their corporate office. Why doesn't their corporate office care about the difference in equipment (and locker rooms) between clubs?

I've been a member of 24 Hour Fitness for about 20 years. A few years ago, I paid about $1,000 up front for three years of membership to have my renewal rate to be $49 a year. The only reason I put the $1,000 is so that I can get a very low renewal fee. However, I'm told that 24 Hour Fitness was bought out by another company and the fine print on the contract states that the rates can be increased on sale of the company. My rate jacked up from $49 to $99. I am one of thousands of people who have posted and one of millions who have been affected by this.
The excuse they are giving is that they want to improve our experience at the gyms, but we know darn well that this is to instantly boost their profit into their pockets. I'm sure that this can add up to hundreds of millions of dollars.
All of us affected were assured by the sales person that the renewal will be at the low rate at the time of the signing. The "bait and switch" tactic is absolutely outrageous.
The insulting thing about this is, the increase is not high enough for us to leave and join another club. And the attitude of the member service reps were the same...take it or leave it.

,24 Hour Fitness is the best Athletic Club I have ever joined.
The Manager [redacted] reslly makes one feel welcome.
The personal trainners are very knowledgeable and supportive to members.
The cleaning, safety, maintenance of all equipment are always kept up.
I will recommend this club to any 55 year old or older because of their equipment and the number of pools.

I've dealt with the manager [redacted] or [redacted] at this facility in Oceanside Ca off of el camino. He has all the data that the corporate office can see on their computer. He can see that my family has been a member for a long time. Longer before 24 hour fitness became a 24 hour fitness. In any event, he told me that this facility is getting an upgrade & when it turns into the new upgrade (which is in October I think. It's July right now), I wouldn't be able to go to this facility anymore due to my membership level. Apparently, I have the basic membership despite the fact that my parents has been grandfathered into the all access?!? If my parents are able to go to the ultra or the super sport, why can't the rest of the family go?? Before it was 24 hours fitness, it was called family fitness. We got the family deal. That is, all 5 members can go to the gym for the price that you would pay for 1 member!!! That was back in the days. Sorry for the side track. Despite the fact that this "gym" hasn't been upgraded yet with the new pool, basketball court, jacuzzi & etc. they have a "deal" until Sunday?!? He said I can upgrade now & it'll only cost me $15.00 & then after Sunday, it'll be $30.00. What?!? The gym hasn't been upgraded yet & they want me to pay for this deal?!? I understand the "deal" if the new upgraded gym is now open but it is not!! So basically, I'll be throwing away $45.00 worth considering the new upgraded gym hasn't open up yet until October. I called corporate and they listened to all my issues that was stated above. They resolved my membership level. I'm publishing this because I see that other people who are also upset with the people behind the desk. Issues about pricing in general. Just make sure you write down the quote & their names just in case they try to change it or give false information. Your better off calling corporate instead of dealing with the people at the facility because they have quotas to meet, they don't care & just want your $$$
I just saw my buddy at this gym. [redacted] did the same thing to him! He mentioned about the deal to upgrade to super sport, he has only a couple of days to get the deal & the super sport gym isn't open yet. It opens in 5 more (the time in MAY when [redacted] talked to my buddy). I'm surprised that corporate management doesn't regulate on [redacted]'s lack of honesty & integrity. 24 hours fitness Corporate said, if the gym that you mainly goto is closing, have been going to the gym 25% of the time. Your membership will be grandfathered so that you will be able to goto the super sport gym! So why does the manager at this facility ([redacted]) tell all old members to upgrade the membership when it will be grandfathered over to the super sport gym?!? Now is that considered doing better business?

Do not go to the facility in Allen TX. Most do not know what is happening inside this club and have the right to know as a member. The management is the worst I've seen. Clif seems to try for the Kids Club, but is all talk and no action. Promises toys and materials will be purchased and never follows through. There is little formal training for Highschool graduates and up and no support. They are CPR trained and work hard, but are treated horribly. No set schedules and management never seems to know what they are doing or how to schedule correctly. They have the childcare worker fill out an incident report but then never follow up on them. That is the point of a report. Your children are not safe here. If reports are not followed by an action of suspension, a child or children, who should not be there will eventually hurt your child. There are no separate areas for different ages, even though it has been suggested to make a separate infant area. It also has never been followed up. Lately, there was a wrongful termination, in my opinion. A boy, who loved working with the children and they loved him, was let go because a fight happened and they said he did not react quickly enough. 3 people in an area and he is the only one let go. At the time, and it is on tape, he was holding a child and verbally telling the children to stop. When it definitely was getting worse, he put the child down, got between them and an incident report was written. 3 people and he was the only one who reacted but he was let go. Why? That's hard to know, but you don't see a lot of boys working in the Kids Club area do you? Think about it. He was humiliated and told to go to the Child center to let the other worker know he had to leave and why in front of the children. This is a managers job. The other 2 involved in this incident, one was checking people in and the other one...well she was there somewhere? She says bathroom but the incident was 15 minutes long according to management. Why has she not been fired for either not being at her area or ignored the situation completely?? So the one person, who did react, is let go. Seem wrong? It gets worse. The missing girl in this incident has also had other issues, but is somehow still there. She is either late or doesn't show up. She even text her manager that she partied too much and that is why she wasn't there that morning. She brought blades into work that were confiscated by her manager. She has left crying numerous times, left work early for cramps, caught sleeping while working and has had headphones in her ears. Hard to hear the children that way? Yet, somehow this person still remains employed? How? Nobody has any idea. But a very hard working boy is told to leave after one incident when others were there as well. He's told he hasn't reacted before. This is not true and never has had a verbal or written warning prior to this incident. Wrongful termination? I absolutely believe so. Now on to outside the Child Center. The new manager [redacted] and [redacted] were investigated and found guilty for not following protocol with members accounts. In fact, not legal. Yet, they are still there? There is no cohesive atmosphere. Rarely does the front desk want to help out the child center when needed, and lack of support in all areas in regards to management. There are many reports on this site about member fees and that is also an issue at this club as well. Main focus..knowing what you do now, do you feel safe leaving your children in an area that is not backed up by management? The rest of the child care staff are working hard and writing reports that go ignored. If you would like play equipment, a separate infant area and toys, let management know and loudly.

This IS a great location, with nice trainers and staff, however, the management ..... Highly disappointed with the customer service here. This whole experience has left a very, very nasty taste in my mouth with this gym and the entire chain. I will be warning every single person I know from now on to stay away.
From the useless (or non existent) district manager to the soulless sales managers, 24 runs a really bad business practice. Maybe not as long are you're a member, but the moment you try to leave, you're worth nothing to them.
I see new people walking in all the time, fooled by the fake smiles and obsequious kow-towing of the sales team. Yes, everything is rainbows and roses. Until you give them your money.
Here's what happened:
I purchased 5, 10, then 30 sessions with my first trainer. First trainer was great! First trainer left. I had 20 sessions left. I tried New Trainer, and it just wasn't great for reasons I won't go into.
I then talked very SALES-oriented manager [redacted] and told him I wanted to quit, but after a lot of cajoling on his end I said I would try New Trainer again and booked 2 sessions, but then decided I just wasn't comfortable so I went with my gut and I called in to cancel because I lost New Trainer's number was told the manager would tell him I'd cancelled my sessions.
He never passed on my message, but I didn't know because New Trainer (unlike First Trainer) didn't text me until 3 days after I 'missed' my appointment with him to ask if I was still down for tomorrow. Confused, I told him via text I had lost his number but called the gym to cancel both sessions earlier in the week and was sorry the message never got to him. I was very apologetic because it was not his fault. He never responded to that. Kinda not cool.
Here is my problem:
1) I called in to cancel both sessions. I was told they would pass on my message. I even got the name of the manager who told me this, to make sure. Yet now when I talked to that same manager he flat out refuses to admit I called in to cancel. If I didn't, why would I say via text to New Trainer that I did? Ok, I guess I'm a liar then. He was also condescending and impatient the whole time, saying "It's in the policy, if you don't show up it's a missed session, we do quality checks, you never checked in for your session, etc" WELL DUH I never checked in, cause I called to cancel! I explained I understand this, the issue is not whether or not I showed up, because I clearly didn't, but the fact I called in to cancel my session and they lost the message, so I get penalized for TWO classes?
I was very calm the whole time, asking only for the sessions I didn't use, which they promise to do right away. At $1200, that's not cheap.
Either way, they promised to refund 20 sessions, and I've yet to see a dime. This was from May 7th. Forward almost 2 months later, I have not received a refund. I've called customer service half a dozen times, to be told the district manager will call me back. Week after week I wait, nothing. This center never applied for a refund, the district manager never follows up. I've sent an email to them, nothing.
TWELEVE HUNDRED DOLLARS. I work non profit, and I sincerely invested in my fitness because I really wanted to make a difference. I did great with my first trainer, and now I'm out $1200 because this place is all about money.
To make things worse, [redacted] the Sales Manager also really was not respectful of First Trainer, and completely unprofessional in the way he talked about a past employee. 'sure I love him he's a great guy.. but a little.. business focused, you know what I mean?' He made it very clear he didn't love that guy. Sure, I get this employee left you, which he has every right to do, but this was done to convince me to stay with New Trainer, who was not great. I find that kind of behavior (making clear you don't care for a previous employee) a bit unprofessional. If you'll talk about an ex employee like that behind his back for a sale, what else will you do?
Overall, this place disgusts me. The company disgusts me, the managers disgusts me.
I've never believed in calling out people - I usually message owners separately if I had a really bad experience, giving second chances, but this place deserves it.
STAY AWAY.
