Berkheimer Associates Reviews (114)

Review: I moved from [redacted], PA to [redacted], Pa in September 2012. (Same school district) My school taxes in [redacted] were approximately $4000 and went up to about $6200 in [redacted]. Shortly after I moved, I received a 2012-2013 interim tax bill for $7732.19 which was paid out my escrow account. I eventually received a refund of about $3450. (that brought the tax bill for 2012 down to about $4300) In addition, my mortgage company also paid the $6250 school tax bill for 2013. I realized I ended up paying over $6000 in school taxes in 2012 as I had also made two partial payments of $1030 each after I received the initial tax bill in 2012. ($1030 + $1030 + $4300) I initially called Berkheimer in October 2013 and they told me they saw no record of the two $1030 payments. Per their request, I mailed and faxed the cashed checks to their attention so I could get back my overpayment. Since October, I have called their office several times, re-faxed the documentation several times and spoke with four or five different people. They have promised to look into the issue, but five months later they have done absolutely nothing!! I understand mistakes are made, but it is disgraceful they have ignored my requests to reimburse me my overpayment!!! If I was five months late on my tax bill, they would slap me with a 10% penalty. We are not talking $10 or $15 here, but several thousand dollars and they don't seem to even care. My next step is to contact my local congressman and state representative if I am not reimbursed in the next two weeks!Desired Settlement: I want to be reimbursed my overpayment with interest.

Dear [redacted]:

I have received your letter dated February 20, 2014, with its attached documentation, concerning the above named party. Because Berkheimer Tax Administrator is a duly appointed local tax collector and the complaint at issue pertains to the collection of local taxes and confidential tax information, it is our position that the Revdex.com does not have the jurisdiction or authority to consider taxpayer disputes concerning the collection of local taxes. [redacted], the taxpayer is afforded certain rights and remedies, including the right to certain administrative appeals, under Pennsylvania's Local Tax Enabling Act, Local Tax Collection Law and the Local Taxpayers Bill of Rights that he or she may evoke. However, with that stated, it is Berkheimer position to resolve any disputes or complaints from a taxpayer amicably where possible. In this regard, Berkheimer will review the merits of the complaint at issue and address the taxpayer’s concerns contained therein directly with the taxpayer.

Review: [redacted]

I am rejecting this response because:

In **. [redacted]'s letter, he states Berkheimer will review the merits of the complaint at issue. Fair enough, but five months????????!!!! If my 2013 taxes real estate taxes are approximately $4200 and the amount I paid was about $6300, what is there to review??? I was told in October by Berkheimer, they did not have record of two $1030 installment payments I made in the summer of 2012. I then mailed and faxed a copies of the cashed checks. What more can I do?

What is most disturbing is I have made numerous phone calls and nobody seems to have any idea what to do except to say the matter is under review. In the last week, I was told twice a supervisor would call me back and I am still waiting for those calls. (I am not holding my breath).

There is no gray area here. My mortgage company paid the tax bill of about $7700 for 2012. They ultimately refunded me about $3400 after I moved to my new residence. I made two $1030 payments. ($7700-$3450 + 2030 = about $6300) The amount owed is about $4200. It is clearly documented. I am once again demanding that Berkheimer act responsibly and ethically. Their business practice is deplorable.

Regards,

Review: I believe Berkheimer is trying to collect double taxes from me. When I married in 2005, I never changed my name with SS, and have ALWAYS filed taxes under my maiden name [redacted]. I have now received a past due notice from 2007 taxes for the name [redacted] with my social security number. I have always paid taxes jointly with my husband in the names [redacted] and [redacted]. I should not have TWO accounts with the same social security number!Desired Settlement: Notarized letter that account for [redacted] with SSN ###-##-#### has been deleted and that account in [redacted]'s name with the SAME SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER is in good standing.

Review: [redacted] County, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, has hired Berkheimer Tax Administrators to process local income tax returns. My local income tax return was filed on 27 January 2013 for a refund of $267 for 2012 local income taxes paid, to which I am rightly entitled, as money was errantly withheld by my employer (as shown on my W-2). Although my company is headquartered in Pennsylvania, I work, and did work all of 2012, out of Louisiana. For that reason, I am not required to pay state or local income tax to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for calendar year 2012. When I processed the return, I received a confirmation e-mail stating that it could take up to 75 days to process the return due to heavy volumes. Today is 4 May 2013. Over 90 days have passed, and I still have not received a refund. I contacted Berkheimer about this matter via e-mail, and was told that they needed proof that I did not work in Pennsylvania. My initial contact was made on 15 April 2013. More than 75 days had passed and I had not heard a thing. This is misrepresentation. Now, after my initial contact, I am asked for paperwork to prove that I did not work in Pennsylvania. Berkheimer is responsible for administering the funds based on my signed and sworn tax return and has yet failed to do this. After my last communication, dated 24 April 2013, they have said that they process returns as they are received. This is a lie. My return was sent on 27 January 2013. If they are still processing January returns after 100 days, then they cannot fulfill their 75 day statement.Desired Settlement: I want to receive the $267 to which I am legally entitled that was withheld, in error, by my employer.

Review: [redacted]

I am rejecting this response because:

The business stated they would review all tax filings within 75 days. They still have not refunded me my money. If the situation were reversed and I did not pay my taxes, I would be incarcerated, yet I have no legal protection from them doing this to me. The documents they sent do not contain information that is helpful and they've made no effort to resolve this matter directly with me. Rather they turn it over to a lawyer right a letter to blow it off, and expect me to be satisfied, feeling as though they are protected by the state. I will consult my attorney directly.

Regards,

Review: Each year in April, Berkheimer distributes a per capita school tax notice, typically due in August of the same year. I did not receive a per-capita school tax notice in 2012 from Berkheimer. (This may be related to the fact that the post office around that time was not delivering some of my mail due to a negligent postal employee) Therefore, I received a bill early 2013 for non-payment of the 2012 tax, plus additional late fees. I sent in the payment on August 23, 2013, well prior to the due date (9/3/2013). I also included all of the late fees, as I could not prove that they didn't send me a notice in 2012.I received a second notice, with additional new fees listed, on Friday, August 30th 2013. It seems like Berkheimer has neglected to cash my original check and instead bill me additional fees, before giving me sufficient time to pay.Desired Settlement: I spoke with a Berkheimer associate on 9/3/2013 that identified herself as [redacted] to try to get a resolution. She indicated it is possible they received the payment but have not processed it. My fear is Berkheimer will continue coming back and claiming that they haven't received the payment I made in good faith and attempt to collect even more fees. I wanted to file a complaint regarding these aggressive collection practices, as well as to log my experience with an independent authority. Thanks

Review: fees charged by company unfair and practice of collecting fees unfair garish pallroll. they can charge hat they want and take it from your check.the bill was for tax of 5.50 cents and charged 45 dollars in fees. then I received another bill later that day with my nickname for 35 dollars for the same per capita tax of 5.50cents called company and they told me they are the tax collector and they can charge what they want they want too. they were sued in 2002 about these fees and found guilty and had to pay money back. they are doing it againDesired Settlement: repay fees and change in policy in ways of collecting fees be more standard fees not gouging the tax payers making money on them

Review: In tax year 2012, our paperwork and tax check was sent to Heidelberg/[redacted] EIT Bureau. On or around the same time, the Township had contracted with Berkheimer to handle the tax payments. The tax check was cashed but the paperwork was apparently not recorded. While I recognize the error we made, we addressed the issue in June of 2013 when we were contacted by Berkheimer, requesting a copy of the tax return. We sent the copies of the tax return and thought that was the end of it. In January of 2014, we received a delinquent notice for the 2012 tax year along with a tax bill. Forgetting I had paid the tax in April 2013, I sent another check. I reviewed my tax year 2012 paperwork shortly after sending the check and I realized I double paid the taxes. On February 4, 2014, I called Berkheimer to bring this to their attention. I provided paperwork and a copy of the cancelled check to prove I double paid and was told I would receive a refund for tax year 2012. On April 11, 2014, when I discovered I did not receive the refund, I called Berkheimer. After spending 20 minutes on hold, I was told I will need to wait an undetermined amount of time to have this resolved, possibly another month because they are backed up. I was told in mid-May, after demanding I speak to a supervisor, that my refund would be processed and I would receive in mid-June. I still have not received it. I called Berkheimer on Tuesday, July 1 and was greeted with a phone recording that “due to a high volume of phone calls, there is an extra long wait time to speak to a counselor” and had the option to leave my name and number. Two days later, I received a return call and was told my file is still under review and that she would need to speak to a supervisor, but the supervisor was busy on a phone call. I was told I would be called back once they had a chance to review. On July 8, I received another phone call, saying there was still no confirmation of my account. I am still waiting for Berkheimer to resolve my issue. It is now July 17, 2014 and I have paid the first quarter of 2014 taxes, and now have to pay the second quarter. If I do not, I will be penalized. They cannot even straighten out an issue from 2012.Desired Settlement: I would like them to resolve my tax refund issue. I provided proof of double payment 6 months ago.

Review: In previous years we have received mailed forms to fill out and return to file our local taxes. Apparently, since we submitted those online one year, we never receive the mailed forms again. Supposedly we receive them via e-mail now, which we have not for 2013 filing. The only communication we received came in September...with a $25 late fee attached. If the company could forward me the email they sent, I would be satisfied. However, until I see that, they have been practicing unethical collection practices by not sending any annual communication.Desired Settlement: Send me the e-mail I reportedly received for the 2013 tax filing.

Review: Berkheimer Associate Account Number: [redacted].

My August pay (employee at the [redacted]) was garnished $114.50. Berkheimer collected on 2001-2006 [redacted] ASD Per Capita Tax.

I haven't lived or worked in [redacted], PA since 1998.

I called Berkheimer and spoke to a representative and they asked for my tax records dating back to 2001. I visited the IRS.gov website and they could only produce records back 6 years.

Since 1998, I've lived and worked in [redacted] NY, [redacted] OH, [redacted] IN and [redacted] PA. Berkheimer indicated they sent notices but those notices where sent to an address that I lived in back in 1998.

I also understand Berkheimer no longer represents [redacted] County for tax service colletions b/c that contract belongs to [redacted] collections. I find it odd that Berkheimer is trying to collect non-resident taxes dating back more than 8 years for a county they no longer have a contract for.Desired Settlement: I would like a full refund in the amount of $114.50. If they do not agree to the refund. I do plan to contact the Attorney General.

Review: I am self employed and I am required to file a quarterly payment for local earned income tax. I made all of my payments and filed my tax return by the required date of April 15, 2013. I had a refund of $110.00 coming back. I received my federal and state refunds in a timely fashion, but did not receive my refund from this company. After waiting over two months, I contacted Berkheimer associates on June 20, 2013. I asked if there were any regulations concerning my return. I was told they had until July 1, 2013 to send my refund. I again waited until July 9, 2013, before I contacted them again. I told them I wasn't concerned about when I received my refund, but I wanted a phone number or address to file a complaint. I was given an address within the same company to complain to. That did not make sense to me to again pet the same dog that just bit me. That brings me to this complaint. During the phone call of July 9 2013, they verified my name and address and told me a supervisor would expedite my refund at once. IF they keep the money of many people like me, it seems there would be a nice amount of interest to be earned. I would like to know which state agency regulates companies like this. As of today ,July 10, 2013, I have not received my refund. Please look into what I perceive to be a serious problem. A company should not be able to hold an individuals money without being subject to penalty and interest as I am if I do not make my required quarterly payment. Thank You!Desired Settlement: I want this company to comply with regulations in the future, and not be able to hold money that does not belong to them.

Review: EVERY year there seems to be an issue with the company properly crediting our township per capita tax. This small $10 tax causes me significant grief constantly. Last month they garnished my wages to catch up my husbands per capita tax for 2012 and 2013. I did not have time to locate and send cancelled checks to fight the garnishment.

You would think this would have brought the account current in their records, however they are trying to garnish my wages for 2008, 2009, and 2011 per capita taxes for my husband. I send cancelled checks and a letter for these years back in 2011, the checks were cashed in 2010 as I had re-issued 2008 and 2009 payments and paid 2010 tax.

I refaxed the letter and explanation to Berkhiemer 2 weeks ago and have been unable to reach them via phone. After holding for long periods of time I receive an automated msg that "no one in the delinquent tax department is available". I tried again calling this week with the same results. At my wits end, I faxed the letter to Berkhiemer 4 or 5 more times today and finally someone called her at my place of work rather than my cell phone as instructed on my fax. This meant that I now had to have this conversation at my desk with no privacy. I was told that my checks sent to pay my taxes had been applied to misc admin fees and not my husband's per capita tax. When I questioned why the prior wage attachment did not bring the account current, the person said it did but this was a different account... this is not correct as these are both for my husband's per capita tax. Also, if I submit payment for a tax I expect the tax paid not have payment applied elsewhere. Further they refused to provide me with a printout of my account or proof showing how my payments were applied.

Berkhiemer is out of control and charging tax payers for made up junk fees.Desired Settlement: I want verification from Berkhiemer that all the fees they "charge" are allowed by law and confirmation that this account is completely current. Further, I will now be sending any payment via certified check and certified mail. If moving forward I have ANY issue with receipt of payment I will seek legal action.

Review: This company has been sending my entire adult family bills for a local earned income tax. We do not even live in the township that they are collecting for and have never lived there. They continue to send us bills, past due notices, and collection agency notices for these taxes when we have never lived in [redacted] Township, where they are collecting. Very truly yours,

Review: I was charged a per capita tax delinquet of $11 for 2010 and 2011. The added on fees for sending out letters which they were sued a class action in 2007 and had to pay 75000 to over 600 people. They have not learned their lesson and are still charging illegal fees to taxpayers. That is illegal and in my view a scam.

The grievance consists of multiple things.

I have not lived in [redacted] or [redacted] county since 2006.

I have been on disability since 2005 and have not had to pay any taxes since 2005 since I only make less than $8000 in benefits!

So first of all any attempt to correct taxes from me are incorrect since I have not had to pay any since 2005

Secondly the charges are incorrect because I have not even lived in [redacted] or [redacted] county since 2006 since they are charging me for 2010 & 2011

Thirdly a court has ruled that the extra fees they tack on are illegal in 2007 and it seems they are back at it!

IDesired Settlement: I advise the company to delete any such balance due from a one "[redacted]" account # [redacted]. I also advice the company to cease and desist all letters by mail. I also advise them to stop trying to contact the forementioned person indefinitely! Also please take her out of your system forever! I also advice them to stop illegal collection practices by adding and tacking on illegal fees they have in the past by a court ruled as illegal. I also will send these statements to the attorney general and the official local tax office! Good day and Godbless

I am rejecting this response because:

I have no idea what was really stated. They were not clear in stating what action will be taken and what will be resolved. I am underthe impression that the response received just stated that a further communication is needed. If my original letter was actually sent to the tax delinquet collector they would realize they made a mistake and are attempting to collect from soemone who is exempt Under the disiability and fairness act they somehow were misinformed, miscategorized, disorganized, and were incorrect in the address, person whom they were seeking and I have noted they have already lost a class action in 2007 for this type of behavior. They will receive no payment. I will contact the fcc and other authorities to sop the scam from hurting myself and others! I do thank the Revdex.com in any way for helping me and others burheimer has tried to scam and rip off!
