Review: I am looking at cars to buy for my teenage daughter. carfax.com advertised unlimited reports using the license plate. Only after I purchased the service did it let me know that this service was for a month. Below is a copy of the internet advertising, nowhere does it state a time stipulation.

Unlimited CARFAX Reports

only $54.99

Unlimited Reports by U.S. License Plate

SelectedDesired Settlement: I would like the price of the service refunded to my credit card or the option to get reports on 5 vehicles. I would also like carfax.com to place on their advertisement the time stipulation.

Business

Response:

The Unlimited plan is unlimited for 30 days. This is stated in several places, including the Customer Agreement, which the customer read an accepted before purchasing, as well as in the receipt email and after logging in to their account.

Review: I purchased a vehicle from [redacted] in [redacted], 4-4-12 at the time of purchase the Carfax report came out as a clean car with no history of any accidents. Just a week ago around 4-8-13 I was going to sell the car to another dealership which of course wanted to see the report, it came back with an accident dating back 4-12-11, thats 1 year after purchasing the vehicle, they also told me that the cars value would decrease because of the accident. I went back to the dealership and complained and they had told me that it was not there fault. So, they had advised me to go after Carfax since they had a "Buy back Guarantee program", which I tried to contact and that there is no possible way to even speak with anyone. Although, they sent me an email case#[redacted] stating that its not there fault either because of the simple fact that sometime things like that go unreported for several years. As a customer, I based my purchase because of Carfax's reputable history and at this point that reputation has gone in the garbage. I had only put less than 4000miles on the vehicle as well. I am losing a lot of money because of an issue that was not reported which it should of been Carfax's duty to provide that information before sending out a report to it's consumers where again we trusted that there information is accurate.Desired Settlement: What I want from Carfax is to refund me what I initially spent on the vehicle not what it is worth after the accident.

Dear [redacted]:

We appreciate the

opportunity to offer the following response to the subject complaint.

On April 17, 2013, CARFAX

emailed the following response:

Good Morning,

I apologize that we do

not have a call center and I am sorry to hear of your troubles and your

discovery with your vehicle!

We do not guarantee

that there are no accidents because we know that accidents often go unreported

and not all sources report to CARFAX.

When we contract with

new sources, they often have prior records on vehicles that are added to the

CARFAX Reports as soon as they are provided. I understand your concerns

regarding the timing but despite our best efforts, sources can sometimes take

up to several years before agreeing to supply their data while others may never

report information to CARFAX.

We always recommend a

comprehensive inspection and test drive before purchasing a used vehicle to

avoid hidden problems.

Because clerical

errors are always possible, our research team will be happy to verify this

information for you. Please go to http://www.carfax.com/help . At the bottom,

you will see "Submit a Request to Fix a Report”, simply fill out and

submit that form.

Thank you!

Review: [redacted]

I am rejecting this response because:

I feel that I should get my money back or at least majority of it for a purchase where I had a trusted source (Carfax) that I had based my purchase on. It took Carfax 1yr to report an accident and for it to show that something had happened to it. How can a business so huge like carfax report things so late. They say they have a buy back guarantee this should be one of them. My car is really not worth as much as it should be because of there mistake. I should not be the one to suffer for a mistake they made. It says on the response from Carfax "that I should of done a comprehensive inspection and to test drive before purchase to avoid hidden problems!" I did do all that of course it all went well. They just didnt show the accident. Please help me with this, this has been a huge headache for me and Im pretty sure for others as well. Attached is also the reports when I purchased the vehicle and one about a couple of weeks ago when I found out about the accident.

Response:

Dear [redacted]:

We appreciate the

opportunity to offer the following response to the subject complaint.

I sympathize with [redacted]’s situation, but CARFAX did not

make a mistake as he claims. The

accident was not reported to CARFAX by the police department until after the

vehicle was purchased. Had it been

reported at the time, it would have displayed on the CARFAX Report.

[redacted] claims he relied on the CARFAX Report to make his

purchase decision, but I have no choice but to question that. Had he actually relied on the CARFAX Report, he

would have seen that the CARFAX Report said that no accidents were reported to

CARFAX , and since not all accidents are reported to CARFAX, it cannot be

solely relied on. It even informed him

that no information had been reported to CARFAX since 2005 and encouraged him

to get copies of service and repair information from the seller. The CARFAX Report never stated that the

vehicle was free from accidents.

CARFAX cannot guarantee accidents because the CARFAX Report

is quite clear that not all accidents are reported to any source, and not all

sources report to CARFAX. Thus, CARFAX

does recommend a thorough pre-purchase vehicle inspection to check for hidden

damage and prior repairs.

Review: The TV adds lead you to be leave that you get your car fax for free provided you have a valid VIN #,,, I have tried multiple times to run VIN numbers and it wants me to sign up for 1 report or unlimited for a year for $$$Desired Settlement: Change advertising information.... this service in not "FREE" as it states on the TV commercials. "JUST ASK FOR YOUR FREE CARFAX REPORT"....... Not so much so!!!!!!!! Also be fined to the maximum allowable extent for false advertising!!!!!

Response:

CARFAX provides many free reports, including the Record Check, Lemon Check, Airbag Check, and Flood Check. Many CARFAX Vehicle History Reports are also available to consumers for free when they are paid for and provided by vehicle sellers. Consumer can browse used vehicles for sale that include free CARFAX Vehicle History Reports through CARFAX Used Car Listings, http://www.carfax.com/cars-for-sale. CARFAX Vehicle History Reports can be purchased at our website, where the customer can also find our various free CARFAX Reports.

Review: Carfax sells subscriptions to its vehicle history report service. It's website offers unlimited reports for $54.95. Once the order has been placed, the website discloses that there is a 30-day time limit in which the report service can be used. There is no indication of a time limit before the order is placed.

Once the customer has made the purchase and logged into the website to utilize the report service, the website discloses that the "unlimited reports" only applies to reports that are ordered by license plate number. Reports that are ordered by vehicle identification number are limited to five reports. The website does not give any indication of this limitation prior to the purchase being made.Desired Settlement: Revdex.com should require Carfax to correct its deceptive business practices or remove its Revdex.com Accredited Business certification.

Business

Response:

CARFAX offers three CARFAX Vehicle History Report packages to consumers on its website, www.carfax.com. A single CARFAX Report, five CARFAX Reports (both of these accounts can use the VIN or the license plate), and Unlimited CARFAX Reports for 30 days using the U.S. license plate. The order form specifically states "Unlimited CARFAX Reports only $54.99 / Unlimited Reports by U.S. License Plate." The details are also listed in the Customer Agreement on the order page, which the customer must read and accept before placing the order. It is also listed in the order confirmation page, the receipt email, and upon logging into the account.

I am rejecting this response because:It does not address my complaint. Carfax is selling a service without disclosing the limitations of the service, prior to completing the sale.

Regards,

Business

Response:

CARFAX does disclose the limitations of its service prior to sale in the Customer Agreement posted direclty on the order page, to which each customer must check the box certifying that they have read and accept.

Review: Carfax clearly defines its reports by how many you can order and by what price but does not disclose the true nature of the reports time limit except in fine print which is bs. If I am ordering unlimited reports, doesn't that mean unlimited clearly defined and with no time stated clearly there except in fine print they fool the user into spending money on a service that is in fact limited. this should be clearly stated on the outside where you order the reports not in the fine print where most people fail to see what is going on. only reason I found out is it has a date when my service ends, limited service. I thought it was unlimited. So clearly state this on your website.Desired Settlement: Not only refund that they should also have to supply this information on their website and not mislead consumers.

Business

Response:

With the 30-Day Unlimited Package, the customer can run an unlimited number of CARFAX Reports using the vehicle's U.S. license plate for 30 days. The details of the plan are listed on the order form, in the Customer Agreement (which the customer must read and accept before asking us to place their order), the order confirmation and receipt page, the receipt email, and by logging into the account where it shows the account's expiration date. Any further questions should be directed to our customer support team. http://support.carfax.com/c_contactus

Consumer

Response:

Again a short coming by a company that means to profit by not listing something as little as 30 days. That's all. The wording "30-day" needs to be listed on that listing. 30-days is not unlimited. You worthless companies that think you are above the law by not putting stuff in print is coming to a close. 30-day limited would be how it is specified. Fix it and refund my money. Quit [redacted] the customer. That's how you built your business and guess what that's how it will be taken down. By the customer if you can't do right by them.

Business

Response:

This complaint is not centered around a lack on CARFAX's part to tell the customer the details of the account; rather, the complaint is centered around the customer's failure to read the many times CARFAX told the customer about the details of the account.

Review: Carfax advertises unlimited searches for a month when you sign up. This is not true. After seven VIN searches I have been told the unlimited only pplies to license plate searches. This is useless when all car adverts only carry the VIN number. This is false advertising and fraudulent activity.Desired Settlement: My refund, plus their home page on carfax.com updated to the reality and accuracy of their service.

Review: Car Fax has issued an erroneous report on my car. They have reported the car totaled. It was never totaled. It had minor hail damage and the insurance company reported it as repairable. Since Car Fax erroneously reported it as totaled, I cannot sell my car which I need to do. Car dealers will not take it with such a report and they say the car cannot be sold with that false information on the Car Fax report. They have offered me a nice trade-in price if we can get the Car Fax report corrected. My insurance adjuster has tried repeatedly to get in touch with Car Fax to give them the correct claim report but so far Car Fax has not answered her e-mails. I am being held up on my car sale because of this. The Car Fax Vehicle History Report is [redacted]. The Insurance Adjuster is [redacted], [redacted]. The original [redacted] number is [redacted]. Review: I was trying to trade my car in when the dealer informed me that there was an accident recorded on the carfax report. The report stated the airbag was deployed and this deems the car with no value. I bought this car new and it has never been in accident where the airbag was deployed. This has cost me from being able to trade my car in. I contacted them and was told that there data is uploaded automatically. I feel there needs to be some sort of quality to ensure that the data is correct on the reports that they provide people in the exchange for money. This has cost me from one being able to trade my car or even sell it. Plus the car I was going to buy has already been sold. So I lost out on that also.

Business

Response:

The airbag deployment disputed by the customer was reported to CARFAX by the police department. CARFAX has contacted the police department and asked them to verify the airbag deployment and send supporting documentation. Once the documentation arrives, CARFAX will conclude its research and contact the customer. The customer can only provide a copy of the police report to speed up the process.

Review: When choosing which report option to purchase, Carfax pre-selects unlimited, which costs $54.99. I wanted to purchase a single report for my own vehicle, which should've cost $39.99. Had Carfax not pre-selected unlimited and instead forced me, the buyer, to proactively pick which report option I wished to purchase, I would not have not made this mistake and would not have purchased more reports than I need or want and would not have spent an additional $15 that will serve only to enrich Carfax's pocket, but do nothing for me.

Carfax pre-selects unlimited precisely so that people will do what I did: buy that more expensive option over the two cheaper ones knowing that most people will not complain and seek a refund of the extra $15.Desired Settlement: Credit my credit card $15 so that I spend $39.99 for the single Carfax report I wanted, for my own vehicle, and not $54.99 for unlimited reports which I won't use, because I'm selling my car and buying a new one and do not and will not need additional Carfax reports for that purpose.

Business

Response:

The customer purchased the Unlimited CARFAX Reports. The order

page lists the plan as "Unlimited CARFAX Reports / only $54.99 / Unlimited

Reports by U.S. License Plate / Valid for 60 days" and also states this on

the order page under the Customer Agreement, to which the customer read and

accepted before placing their order. If the customer only wanted a single CARFAX Report then the "1 CARFAX Report / $39.99 / 1 Report / Valid for 60 days" option should have been selected.

If the customer would like to discuss their account and refund options

Review: We bought a car in June 2010. Before we purchased we noticed a little damage, but the Carfax (we have the Carfax from June 2010) only reported a minor accident, so we purchased the car. In March of 2013 we went to buy a new car and when we went to trade in the car we purchased in June 2010 the Carfax showed structural damage which was reported at auction in October 2009, conveniently enough left off the Carfax from June 2010. They didn't report the damage until June 2011 almost 2 years later - what value is that when buying a used car? Instead of being offered fair value for the car which would have been around 5 or 6K, we offered essentially nothing.

We would have never bought the car initially had we known about this structural damage. When I contacted Carfax (you can't speak to anyone only online chat) they were patronizing (I saved the interaction) and when I asked to speak to a manager they told me one would contact me. A week later after contacting them and not having been contacted by a manager I contacted them again. The same person via internet chat told me they were busy and a manager would contact me soon. Her tone was extremely unfriendly and uncaring. I have yet to be contacted by them over a month and a half later. I told the representative I would be contacting the Revdex.com and she told me to go ahead. Simply uncaring.Desired Settlement: I think Carfax should refund us for the price we paid for the Car in June 2010 and they can take possession of the car. They advertise themselves as a total necessity in buying a used car. In this case we got scammed and were met by an entirely uncaring company that won't even answer to their deficiency. How can something be reported in October 2009 and still not show in June 2010? What kind of service is this? We relied upon it and it failed us miserably. Not too mention I have rarely seen such inconsiderate customer service.

Review: [redacted]

I am rejecting this response because:

Their advertisements are entirely misleading, their reporting is out of date. They speak out of both ends of their mouth - on the one hand they say, "

Don´t run the risk of buying used cars with costly hidden problems", and on the other they say, "CARFAX recommends a pre-purchase vehicle inspection". Well what happens when you inspect it and it all looks good and the dealer tells you they have inspected it and it all looks good and then 2 years later CARFAX reports structural damage and you lose thousands of dollars when you try to trade in your car?

I guess I could take their advice and attempt to sell the car privately without disclosing the damage, but some people actually believe in being honest.

Bottom line is CARFAX is useless when it comes to determining if a used car has been in an accident. I mean 2 years later they report? They suggest spending $100+ on an inspection, which is not at all realistic in a short time frame. Why would I ever need a CARFAX if I'm going to spend so much time and money having a mechanic tell me what CARFAX can't even get right.

Their portrayal is one of necessity, in the end we believed their deceitful lies and it has cost us big time. Absent compensation from the inadequate reporting, I will not be satisfied.

Business

Response:

Dear [redacted]:

We appreciate the opportunity

to offer the following response to the subject complaint.

CARFAX advertisements direct customers to our website or to

ask the seller for a CARFAX Report; there is nothing misleading about

that. Each CARFAX Report states that it

is based only on information provided to CARFAX, that not all information is

reported to CARFAX, and therefore the CARFAX Report should always be used along

with a pre-purchase vehicle inspection by a professional and a thorough test

drive.

[redacted] suggests that he was told by CARFAX to sell the

vehicle without disclosing the structural damage, but this is incorrect. In reality, I stated that he is not required

by law to sell his vehicle using a CARFAX Report but cannot control what

actions his consumers might take, which can include a CARFAX Report or a

pre-purchase vehicle inspection, which may uncover the structural damage

regardless of whether or not a CARFAX Report is involved.

I am sorry [redacted] is in an unfortunate situation, but

because CARFAX was forthright about its limitations and recommended the

pre-purchase vehicle inspection that [redacted] chose not to undertake, CARFAX

will not be offering any compensation and will consider this matter resolved.

Review: [redacted]

I am rejecting this response because:

They misrepresent that utility of their reports. Go online and find any CARFAX ad and they will advertise, "Know what you're getting into", "Peace of mind," etc. CARFAX is a reporting agency with out of date reports. They have hoodwinked the public via a brilliant marketing campaign and now have dealers across the nation buying useless reports so that buyers will have solace when buying a used car, the rub is that all it is - is a feel good story for the moment. The nightmare comes later when you find out that the CARFAX was useless - they don't stand by their reports - and you'd be better off spending $$$ and time to get a mechanic to inspect the car for you instead (very unlikely of course, but CARFAX would have you believe you can just roll right into one and they will give you a quick rundown at a reasonable price).

There are only 2 outcomes that will satisfy me: 1) reimbursement for the value of the car lost by their misleading report or 2) they admit their report is useless with regards to any damage to the car. After all their report told me no structural damage, a mechanic would have told me otherwise. So how does getting a CARFAX offer me peace of mind or let me know what I'm getting into.

[redacted] is all the are (rude and uncaring as well), taking the public for a ride. Misleading them with false advertising. It's the equivalent of me running a restaurant and serving no food, but I off a disclaimer at the bottom of the menu claiming, "if you want to actually eat anything - go somewhere else!)

Dear [redacted]:

Review: Hello,

I have bought many times Carfax unlimited vehicle vin number reports for 30 days in the past. The service gives you the tools to run a vehicle vin number reports unlimited for 30 days. That way you can find a vehicle you like and make sure it was not involved in a accident. This time I bought it again but it has changed without me noticing or advertising. It still said "Unlimited CARFAX Reports only $54.99

Unlimited reports by US license plate"

As I have ordered before I thought that they have added an extra service to check the vehicle history using a license plate also which is new. After I purchased I noticed that the free checks for vin numbers start decreasing from 5 to 4 and to 3. Then after researching I found out that the Unlimited search by VIN number is restricted to 5 only although it is Unlimited. I tried calling customer service but there is no tel number for customer service. I contacted them through email and have requested refund as I am not satisfied. They said that I have used the service 3 times and they can not refund me. If I had used it 2 times they would. Also they said it is unlimited only if I use the license plate option. Well there is no way of finding license plate number on a car that you would buy from a private seller. No one would give you his license plate number. Actually people do cover them in pictures. Also this service is useless if you are buying from a dealership as they do not license plates. Altogether the only way you can use the unlimited service is if you run your license plate number or random license plates of the street.

I am complaining against their misleading advertisement and not being able to really use the unlimited service as advertised. Their add should say :" 5 reports by Vin and unlimited by license plate "- as it is in reality. They also sell 5 reports only and it states that.

Secondly Carfax.com says :

"Money back guarantee 100% if not satisfied- no risk"- but reality if you ran 3 it is too late to request refund and they denied my request. So there is risk and it is not 100% guarantee.

Please check the above and contact me with any questions.

Stilian DinevDesired Settlement: Refund of $ 54.99

Review: Bought a car from a [redacted] dealership in June 2011. At the time I was given a carfax report by dealership, the carfax was clean, I even had another [redacted] dealership manager and friend of mine run the vin again just to make sure. he said the car was clean, so I went ahead with the purchase. In Dec 2013, I went to a [redacted] dealership to trade in my [redacted] and they told me that when they ran the car fax, My vin came back with structural damage(frame damage) reported at auction in 2009, 2 years before I bought the car. However carfax failed to report it until july 2011, two years after initial incident and two weeks after I bought my car. FRAUD!Desired Settlement: I bought the car for 16,999 + ext warranty for 2,200. Car was not worth that at time of purchase due to frame damage.

Business

Response:

Without the VIN, we can only respond generically. If the data source reporting the structural damage announcement does not report to CARFAX, then there is no way for CARFAX to have access to that information. Once the data source begins reporting information to CARFAX, the source may also report older, archived information, which will then appear on the CARFAX Vehicle History Report, even if the event took place years earlier.

Because CARFAX knows that not all information is reported to CARFAX, every CARFAX Report states accurately that no accidents or damage is reported to CARFAX, that not all problems are reported to CARFAX, and therefore the CARFAX Report should always be used along with a pre-purchase vehicle inspection and test drive to check for prior repairs and hidden damage.

Review: I PURCHASED CARFAX "UNLIMITED CARFAX REPORTS FOR 60 DAYS" FOR $59.

I FOUND OUT LATER, AFTER READING THE FINE PRINT, THAT I COULD ONLY DO FIVE VEHICLE VIN SEARCHES.

IT IS UNLIMITED ONLY IF I USE THE LICENSE PLATE NUMBER! THIS IS NOT AT ALL A USEFUL SERVICE, SINCE VERY FEW CARS FOR SALE WILL HAVE A LICENSE PLATE NUMBER TO SEARCH. AND EVEN WHEN THEY DO, PLATES ARE OFTEN TRANSFERRED BETWEEN VEHICLES SO THE CARFAX REPORTS WERE MOSTLY USELESS!

OBVIOUSLY, CARFAX KNOW THAT LICENSE PLATE SEARCHES ARE USELESS AND INTENTIONALLY FALSIFY THE ADVERTIZING TO CATCH PEOPLE LIKE ME.Desired Settlement: THEY SHOULD HONOR THE IMPLIED AGREEMENT TO GIVE UNLIMITED VIN VEHICLE SEARCHES FOR 60 DAYS OR THEY SHOULD REFUND THE FEE.

Review: CARFAX has on their report that my 2012 [redacted] was involved in an accident with "severe damages" which means it became not able to drive between the months of January 2014 and March 2014 as they are unsure exactly when "an accident occured. Their report says it was not reported to CARFAX but the accident was reported involving front or side impact with another motor vehicle with severe left front damage reported and airbags did not deploy.

First, I bought the car new and my car has NEVER been in any accident whatsoever. Their is no police report, insurance agency report, towing truck report or repair report because it NEVER happened. My car has been seen and serviced by two companies since I bought and owned it which are [redacted] in [redacted], TX (which does not do body work) and [redacted] (which does not do body work). I am still driving my vehicle to this day in the same great condition it came in and never once touched foot in anyone's repair shop. Let's say my car was repaired and fixed. Where is the repair report on CARFAX. Who serviced it and when? You will not find one because it has never been in an accident.Desired Settlement: I need this falsified information removed from CARFAX's report. Response:

CARFAX researched the customer's dispute and verified that the vehicle is listed on a police report. CARFAX emailed the following details to the customer on 7/14/2014.

Review: Carfax Unlimited Vehicle reports. Dealers do not list license plate info, so in effect the service misleads in not clearly stating that it will not allow you to research vehicles at dealers only registered vehicles from non dealer sources. This is an inherently deceptive behavior and is aimed at allowing dealers to mislead and lie to customers by giving them protected status. This is absolutely not the type of conduct a business should have and get an A+ rating from the Revdex.com.Desired Settlement: They should provide the information they advertise with out misleading or misrepresented services.

If the customer does not have a need to

run CARFAX Reports by license plate, then perhaps the 5 Pack would be the

better plan for them. The customer contacted CARFAX's Customer Support Team and on 10/06/2014 was refunded the full amount of $54.99. This was the e-mail that was sent to the customer: "Hello [redacted],

Thank you for contacting us.

I apologize for the inconvenience. Our 60 day unlimited account

allows you to run a unlimited number of CARFAX reports using a plate

number. Our order page does state the following:

"Unlimited CARFAX Reports

only $54.99

Unlimited Reports by U.S. License Plate

Valid for 60 days"

This account also allows you to run 5 VIN reports as a courtesy;

however the option to run a report using a VIN is not advertised on the

order page. I'm sorry if there was a misunderstanding regarding the

account.

I have processed a $54.99 refund back to your card. It should appear with your card provider in 3-5 business days."

Thank you for the response. Carfax has finally replied and refunded my money.

Review: I am the owner of a 2004 [redacted] (VIN number-[redacted]).

CarFax is incorrectly showing my vehicle as being a stolen vehicle.

This has been proven to be incorrect by CA-DMV, NICB and our auto-insurance company.

This discrepancy has caused us to lose a buyer for our vehicle after spending several weeks of weeding through other potential buyers.

**Note- The category I selected above "An advertisement misrepresenting a product" seems to fit best but may not be completely accurate.Desired Settlement: I purchased a $54.99 service from CarFax so that I could run unlimited reports until this is cleared up. I would like to be compensated the $54.99 as well as having the ability to run unlimited reports for one year.
