Review: I am trying to sell my car, and CARFAX is reporting erroneous data which is preventing me from selling my car. So far I have missed 3 opportunities to sell my car because CARFAX reported 2 owners which was not true but they did fix that, but they are also reporting incorrect odometer reading which is big problem. I have contacted CARFAX and having been corresponding via email with [redacted](Resolution Manager). She explained to me that this error came from the department of FL motor vehicle and that I should contact them. Well after waiting on the phone for 45 min I did talk with a representative from FL and they told that the odometer readings on the title are correct and up to-date. I also pulled my cars history using two different car history report vendors([redacted], and [redacted]) and none of them have reported any odometer errors. I emailed [redacted] from CARFAX back and asked them to fix this error asap because I have lost 3 opportunities to sell my car or even to trade it in. Again [redacted]'s (CARFAX) reply was to call FL motor vehicle department again and have them fix it, clearly I am getting the run-around from CARFAX and quite frankly a business that you can't even call to talk with a live representative shouldn't even be a business. So I did email [redacted] from CARFAX and ask [redacted] to fix this error or I will report them the to Revdex.com, and she didn't reply back.Desired Settlement: I need for CARFAX to correct the odometer errors on the report, so I can sell my car.

Business

Response:

CARFAX shows a mileage inconsistency because inspection stations and service facilities have reported odometer readings to CARFAX which are higher than an odometer reading reported to CARFAX on the Florida title. The DMV and other companies may not be aware of the odometer inconsistency if those agencies do not have access to the inspection and service records. This is what has been reported to CARFAX:

Review: Carfax has incorrect details for my vehicle listed in their database, which is preventing me from selling my vehicle. I initiated a claim yesterday morning on their website and have not heard back from them (Case # [redacted]) . Since I did not get a response back and I need this fixed now, I called the company several times today to further my claim. I was hung up on right in the middle of speaking to a woman and when I called back the woman answers and puts me through to voicemail without speaking.

I was going to wait another day before filing a complaint with Revdex.com but since the customer service at Carfax was so incredibly rude I will not wait any longer to get my problem addressed.Desired Settlement: Carfax needs to fix their database records regarding my odometer immediately. This error on their part is impeding the sale of my vehicle. If they refuse to fix the problem then they will need to reimburse me the cost of my car since I will not be able to sell it with the false data on record. This will come to $4500.

Business

Response:

CARFAX does not have a consumer call center, so I am not sure to whom they spoke that was so rude. However, CARFAX did receive the customer's data dispute regarding a Not Actual Mileage branded title issued by the DMV. CARFAX contacted the DMV and confirmed that they did issue the NAM branded title. CARFAX relayed this to the customer and also provided to the customer instructions on how to get the brand corrected with the state, if it is in error.

I am extremely disappointed with the car fax report package that I purchased. I was in the market for a used car and purchased a car fax report package to assist me in researching vehicles. I was looking at several different vehicles so I purchased the unlimited search for 60 days package. Much to my dismay, the unlimited package only allows you 5 vehicle searches using VINs. The rest of your searches can only be done using a license plate number which is completely useless when you are looking at cars on a dealer's lot!!! Once I realized the terms of my membership, I went back to the membership options to re-read the offerings. The unlimited option does state that the reports are by license plate, but the other offerings are silent as to the methodology of search. Furthermore the unlimited option has a marker that says buy more save more which implies that you are buying more of the same thing that is offered with the cheaper options. I feel like that wording was a deliberate attempt to trick customers into paying $10 more for just 5 reports. Car fax knows that many of their customers are researching used cars from a dealer. They know that dealerships don't have license plates on their cars. Therefore it stands to reason that they know that searches by license plate are useless for most of their customers. I feel extremely cheated.

Review: I bought a 5 report pack from car fax and used one! When I tried to use my password to check another car,the prompt came up that My passwrd expired! They said it was expired and that I had to use the reports in 14 days! This was never posted at all.I go on to read all the stuff that they have and I see that they have a policy that if you havnt used more than 2 car faxes in 90 days and are not satisfied thatthey will issue you a refund!I bought the 5 pack on August 10,2013 by Credit card!I requested the refund because I am just under the 90 day mark and their information the have is incorrect also!Carfax says my car was from [redacted] Chevrolet!I have the window sticker and it was delivered to [redacted] Chevrolet where I bought it!The company is ruing peoples car values with bad info and selling reports and wont let you get the reports! They have their policy in writing and I am requesting the refund that I am well within their rules to recieve!I am filing because I cant trust them to do so on their own!Thank you!Desired Settlement: I want a refund and wish they would stop selling bad reports and packs that they wont let people use!

We appreciate the

opportunity to offer the following response to the subject complaint. On November 6, 2013, CARFAX sent the customer

the following email:

Good

Morning [redacted],

I have

refunded your account for $53.49 and you should see this in your statements

within 3-5 business days. CARFAX Reports are based on information provided to

us by our data sources, so if the information is inaccurate then it is our

sources data that is inaccurate. We never see the vehicles, so we must rely on

our sources for accuracy. According to [redacted] Chevrolet, they offered this

vehicle for sale on 05/13/2012. They reported this to CARFAX, we did not write

the information ourselves. According to [redacted] Chevrolet, they sold this

vehicle on 06/15/2012 and that is their record that they gave to us. If you

feel these are incorrect, you might contact them to verify as that is simply

what they reported to CARFAX.

Please

do let me know if you have any questions. I hope you have a wonderful day!

Review: I have a complaint about Carfax's "Unlimited Service" plan this is offered on their website as their premier product. It advertises unlimited use for researching automobiles.

There is no mention of a limit for looking up VIN numbers of cars. When I selected that choice, their website took me directly to a payment page. There is no location on their advertising page or their payment page that tells what they actually offer. Only after using their product I found they only allow 5 (five) VIN numbers to be researched and no more. I've looked everywhere on their site and do not see any information to tell the consumer what they are actually buying. The "unlimited" service makes one believe they can look up an unlimited number of cars. This is deeply deceptive advertising.

I have contacted the company and expressed my anger at this deception. They do not care. I would like my money returned in whole or part.Desired Settlement: I would like my money refunded. Carfax should stop this deceptive advertising!

Response:

Dear [redacted]:

We appreciate the

opportunity to offer the following response to the subject complaint.

The Unlimited package

comes with five free CARFAX Reports by VIN, but those are offered as a courtesy

and not part of the actual purchase plan.

The CARFAX order form lists the Unlimited package clearly indicating it

is only by license plate:

Unlimited CARFAX Reports

only $54.99

Unlimited Reports by U.S. License Plate

Because the customer has run six CARFAX reports, they are

not eligible for refund, however he has been given five additional CARFAX

Reports by VIN. The account is still

active and can continue to be used.

Review: Carfax.com offers three choices for their services, one of them being "unlimited" CarFax reports. In smaller print, which is not overtly noticeable to consumers, is the caveat "Unlimited Reports by U.S. License Plate/Expires in 30 Days". After receiving my receipt via email, only then I am informed that my "unlimited reports" INCLUDES UP TO five (5) CarFax reports by VIN and unlimited reports using license plates. The advertising makes one believe you can get unlimited reports (regardless of VIN vs. license plate input) for 30 days.

Furthermore, the terms and conditions do not differentiate the two. Here is a copy/pasted portion of those terms: "This Plan is valid for 30 days from the date of purchase, and during this period, you may run unlimited CARFAX Reports for your personal use only in connection with the purchase of a vehicle from a private party and/or the sale of a vehicle to a private party."

We believed that we could get unlimited reports using VIN numbers.Desired Settlement: The "unlimited" option needs to be much more clear that the "unlimited" reports is not true for VIN. There needs to be an asterisk or red lettering to differentiate this. I would also like my $54.99 refunded.

Business

Response:

We appreciate the customer's feedback about the order page. As the customer confirmed, the order page does specify that the plan is unlimited using the U.S. license plate in the product selection box, as well as the customer agreement also on the order page. It is also listed in the purchase confirmation and receipt email that it is a license plate plan. Since the customer has continued to use the account, and has since run all the VINs in the account, the account no longer qualifies for a refund.

Review: [redacted]

I am rejecting this response because: the business does not adequately acknowledge that customers are not overtly and thoroughly informed of their purchase limitations until AFTER they make their purchase. I continued using the service because I had already wasted my money,

and was certain that I would not be refunded. Your response confirms that I was correct in my assumption. This is the last time you will get my money. I will be sure to tell others to avoid using your service from this point forward. Thankfully we have purchased a vehicle, and if/when we have future needs, we will take our business to your competitors.

Response:

The CARFAX order page, prior to purchase, does make it quite clear that the plan is unlimited using the U.S. license plate. Step 1 of the order process, the customer selects which product they would like to purchase, and in that product selection box it clearly states "Unlimited CARFAX Reports only $54.99 / Unlimited Reports by U.S. License Plate." It is also outlined in the Customer Agreement, on the order page, prior to purchase.

Review: I Have Attemted Three [3] Times To Obtain a login and passoword to enter the carfax.com website Which Thus Far Has Cost Me Around $54.00, And I Have Received Nothing. And I Would Appreciate Asap your Customer Service May Be Great. I wrote a moneyback request but didn't received any replies but automatic respond email form.Desired Settlement: According to many problems like mine http://www.contacthelp.com/customer_service/Carfax I want Carfax licence should be void and I want my money back.

Business

Response:

The customer’s complaint is that the CARFAX Report states the vehicle was not in an accident, and since he later found prior damage, CARFAX should buy the vehicle under the CARFAX Buyback Guarantee.

The CARFAX Buyback Guarantee only covers DMV-issued branded titles, and not missing accidents or other damage. As the CARFAX Vehicle History Report states, “GUARANTEED - None of these major title problems [Salvage, Junk, Rebuilt, Fire, Flood, Hail, Lemon, Not Actual Mileage, Exceeds Mechanical Limits] were reported by a state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). If you find that any of these title problems were reported by a DMV and not included in this report, CARFAX will buy this vehicle back.

The CARFAX Vehicle History Report accurately states that no accidents have been reported to CARFAX (“No accidents or damage reported to CARFAX”). It further states that not all accidents or issues are reported to CARFAX, that the CARFAX Vehicle History Report is based only on information supplied to CARFAX and available as of the moment the CARFAX Report is run, and that other information about this 2007 Toyota Tundra Crewmax SR5, including problems, may not have been reported to CARFAX. Therefore, the CARFAX Report suggests the customer should use this report as one important tool, along with a vehicle inspection and test drive, to make a better decision about buying your next used car.

Consumer

Response:

I would still want a reimbursment for 500 in tha damages that were not provided. In which the old ad was in effect when I bought it stating that all the facts were given.

Review: [redacted]

I am rejecting this response because:

Regards,

Business

Response:

At no time did CARFAX state that "all the facts were given." The CARFAX Report always stated that not everything, including problems, is reported to CARFAX. Therefore, we cannot offer any compensation when information is not reported to CARFAX.

Consumer

Response:

These are outrageous lies. Before the change in march of 2013 in which I purchased the vehicle 2012 everything in commercials and ads said everything was said. Point is im tired of arguing and want some type of compensation for it.

Review: [redacted]

I am rejecting this response because:

Regards,

Review: CARFAX has presented a vehicle, 2007 BMW 328i with VIN [redacted], as a "Stolen Vehicle." I have checked the ** DMV records and AutoCheck and no such condition exists. I have also called the National Insurance Crime Bureau, the agency that CARFAX says reported it and they have said it was an error.Desired Settlement: CARFAX must remove the "Theft Flag" immediately so that I can sell the vehicle with no issue.

Business

Response:

Review: Erroneous information was reported on my vehicle which negatively impacted the trading in and purchasing of a new vehicle. It is not been corrected in a timely manner.Desired Settlement: I would like to speak with someone and have the error corrected immediately.

Business

Response:

The customer contacted CARFAX disputing an accident on a CARFAX Report, however, no accidents had been reported to CARFAX for the VIN they provided.

Review: I purchased the full "unlimited" package but it turned out it is only "unlimited" by license plate, not by VIN.

I used TWO VIN searches before I realized it was not unlimited by VIN.

I immediately expressed my dissatisfaction, after only using two VIN searches.

I received a response gifting me 5 additional VIN searches.

Bear in mind, I needed to have some service as I am looking to buy a car.

I attempted to use the license plate option but nobody would give me their license plate for security concerns or the car did not have a license plate.

I did get one license plate but it was not in the carfax system.

In the man time, I did try to keep looking for a car and being reluctant to face an argument, I did use two more VIN searches.

In the man time, I did try to continue getting license plates but could not get any to run.

Finally, I requested a full refund as I am not satisfied with the product.

I received a response that no refund would be provided since I had used more than 2 reports!

Now it looks like that customer service response of giving me free reports was a deliberate attempt to suck me past the only two I had actually used when I complained!!!!

There was no offer of refund when I complained at two reports!!! Only free searches, when even now I have not used!!!!

It seems that was a deliberate attempt to suck me past the oly two that I had actually used.

I demanded a refund again or to speak to a live person and only got the same responses and there is no call center.

This service is useless to me as it is.

ALL I WANT IS MY MONEY BACK.Desired Settlement: I don't want to argue and hassle. I don't want to use the service.

all I want is my money back.

a full 100% refund applied to my credit card.

There is no question that I did complain after only two reports had been used.

Business

Response:

Dear **. [redacted]:

We appreciate the

opportunity to offer the following response to the subject complaint.

The customer is seeking a refund because he is not satisfied

with the service he purchased. As a

one-time courtesy, CARFAX has issued a full refund back to his credit card in

the amount of $58.62.

The CARFAX order page lists the Unlimited CARFAX Reports

plan as Unlimited Reports by U.S. License Plate. This is also mentioned in the Customer

Agreement, the receipt email, and indicated upon logging into the CARFAX

account. The customer contacted CARFAX

expressing that he was unaware the plan was by license plate only, and as a

courtesy, CARFAX added five free additional CARFAX Reports by VIN to his

account, which the customer accepted. It

was not until several days later, running several more CARFAX Reports, that the

customer requested a refund. In order to

qualify for a refund, two or less CARFAX Reports can be run, and thus this case

does not qualify for a refund per the policy to which we both agreed.

The refund has been issued in the hope that the customer

will consider using CARFAX again in the future after thoroughly reading the

order form and the Customer Agreement.

Review: carfax.com is a widely-recognized vehicle history lookup service utilizing the Vehicle's Identification Number (VIN) to access past government and private sector vehicle service records.

Because all commercial value directlly depends upon the information content held by both a seller and consumer in our supply-and-demand free marketplace, information recyclers like carfax.com become crucial in obtaining the best possible price.in a sales negotiation. Both buyers and sellers readily use a vehicle's "carfax" report to ascertain the true market value of that vehicle.

Review:

The carfax.com website clearly uses deceptive advertising practices (hiden information) to lure new consumers into paying more for the same effective value.

The new visitor is presented with three introductory price choices for a six month service.

"1 CARFAX Report $39.99", "5 CARFAX Reports 49.99", and the deceptive "Unlimited CARFAX Reports Only 54.99".

The $54.99 option also states "Unlimited Reports By US License Plate". Nowhere in that selection does it state that the buyter gets only 5 VIN-based lookups.

Next to that is the statement "Every CARFAX Report contains important information that can impact your decision about a used vehicle through a detailed VIN # check". Alluding to the fact that all lookups are VIN-based.

Elsewhere is the purchase agreement where unlimited refers to plate-based lookups but fails to clarify that only 5 VIN-based lookups are allowed.

Elsewhere is the "License Plate" versus "VIN" entry form where entering either results in the same data output. That is stated elsewhere that it doesn't matter which is entered to obtain the same CARFAX Report. If true, then why is there an "Unlimited Plate" price that allows only 5 VIN lookups? The answer is that new customers are lead to believe that for only $5.00 more they are buying unlimited VIN lookups for six months. This is due to the well-known practice of using the vehicle VIN as the information point of reference and not plates for nearly all serious business used car sales.Desired Settlement: carfax.com should

1. Immediately cease and desist with all of their deceptive advertising practices employed at website "carfax.com"

2. refund all monies collected or provide unlimited VIN-based lookups alongside unlimited plate lookups to all of their customers purchasing such "Unlimited" option since their deceptive website advertising was introduced or one year's time whichever is greater.

Business

Response:

CARFAX Vehicle History Reports are compiled using the

unique 17-character vehicle identification number (VIN) for each vehicle. Upon entering a license plate into CARFAX’s

website, CARFAX uses the current U.S. license plate number to look up the most

recent VIN using DMV information. The

customer is asked to verify the year, make and model before ordering the CARFAX

Report. In this way, using the license

plate returns the same CARFAX Vehicle History Report as using the VIN. On the CARFAX homepage, both VIN and license

plate boxes are also available prior to reaching the order page.

The CARFAX order page shows “Step 1. Select Your Package.” The customer is then presented with three

options in the product selection box, outlined as follows:

1 CARFAX Report $39.99 / 1 Report / Valid for 60 Days

5 CARFAX Reports $49.99 / 5 Reports / Valid for 60 Days

Unlimited CARFAX Reports only $54.99 / Unlimited Reports

by U.S. License Plate / Valid for 60 Days

The 1 and 5 Reports plans do not specify in the product

selection box whether the CARFAX Reports can be run by VIN or by license plate

because both options are available for those plans. However, the Unlimited CARFAX Reports plan

specifies that the license plate is required to run CARFAX Reports. The plan does include 5 Reports by VIN for

free, but the customer is not purchasing any VIN searches in this plan, as it

is for license plates only.

The Customer Agreement on the order page, to which the

customer must agree before asking us to place their order, also states that “You

acknowledge and agree that vehicle license plate and state information is needed

to run each CARFAX Report under this Plan. . . . you may run unlimited CARFAX

Reports for your personal use only in connection with the purchase of a vehicle

from a private party and/or the sale of a vehicle to a private party.”

These details are also provided to the customer in the

purchase confirmation page, the receipt email, and listed upon logging into the

account.

Review: I am selling my car and have advertised it on various online sites to help sell it (i.e. [redacted].com and [redacted].com). When reviewing my advertisement, I clicked on the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) which automatically linked to a Carfax report advertisement.

The advertisement alerts that there were "9 records for [my car] which could reveal accidents/damage, odometer rollback, etc." The manner in which it is presented insinuates that there are major problems with my car, which I know to be false. I have screenshots of the advertisement available.

I am the original owner of my car so I know that there are no major problems with it. However, potential buyers have been very wary to pursue my car because of Carfax's advertisement insinuating there are major issues with my car. I therefore had to purchase a Carfax report to prove to potential buyers that there's nothing wrong with the car, even though I already knew this.

I contacted Carfax via email (they don't have a number to call) about this on 5/30/14 (Case #[redacted]) and never heard back so I was forced to file a complaint with the Revdex.com.Desired Settlement: I expect to be refunded for the Carfax report I had to buy to prove to potential buyers there's nothing wrong with my car.

I also expect all records about my car to be erased from Carfax, or for them to stop their misleading advertising.

Thank you.

CARFAX received the customer's email on a Friday at 9:46 PM after our office was closed. CARFAX responded via the below email first thing the following Monday morning at 8:34 AM:

Review: I put my car up for sale and one of the important items to have is a vehicle history report. A prospective buyer purchased the report from CarFax, a popular service. On the report, there were items that I did not see when I purchased the vehicle, so I contacted CarFax via email. They have a policy to not take concerns over the telephone, internet only. I submitted my concern that included 'Stolen and Recovered' and multiple smog certifications on a 6 month frequency. Smog certification is needed every 2 years in the state I live in (California) and it looked suspicious. Perhaps it was oil and filter changes. In any case, I wanted more information and I received a response that was based on speculation. I responded needing more facts, such as dealer and police department for stolen vehicle report so I can go get the reports for my records. No response was made and I feel that the information is baseless and should be removed. I lost a perspective buyer for my car due to this report.

RE: Case #'s [redacted] and [redacted]Desired Settlement: I feel that the information if baseless, should be removed. Otherwise, I would like to know more information about where the smog certification occured and the stolen vehicle police report.

Review: Carfax is reporting an accident under my vehicles VIN number that NEVER took place. I bought the car on September 29, 2012. There is a report on CARFAX that my car was involved in an accident in NOVEMBER 2012 in Georgia. This is NOT TRUE. My car was not involved in an accident during that time and has never left the state of Mississippi going to Georgia since I've owned it. I would like this accident removed because it is FALSE and impacting the trade in value of my car upwards of 5,000 dollars. CARFAX needs to pull the record of that accident and VERIFY the VIN that it happened under or provide the name or contact of the person listed on the accident report IF there is one. This type of false reporting should not be allowed and their sources should be checked and double-checked so that this will not continue to occur to innocent people.Desired Settlement: I just want this false report REMOVED from my carfax report so that I can trade my car in at fair value.

We appreciate the

On September 10, 2013, CARFAX sent to the customer the

following email:

I submitted this VIN for research and verified

that this vehicle was listed on the 11/06/2012 Georgia police report. As a

result, I cannot remove this record from the CARFAX Report at this time.

Before

this can be removed, you will need to contact the agency that filed this

accident report and request that they correct the information. You can obtain a

copy of the accident report through the following website: www.buycrash.com.

You can search by the VIN [redacted].

The

agency that filed this accident report is the [redacted] Police Department

and the report number is [redacted].

I

believe that what may have happened is that maybe the previous owner of this

vehicle was in an accident in their new vehicle and provided an old insurance

card with this vehicle's information on it. That does happen from time to time.

If you

can have the police department correct the report and then provide a copy of

the corrected report or a letter from the police department acknowledging the

error and listing the correct VIN, then I can reopen your case.

You

can fax any information you obtain to me at ###-###-#### or you can attach

Review: I purchased a carfax report on September 22,2014 I did not receive the report via email like they stated plus they charged me for a report that I did not select no confirmation information about my order as well.Requested my money back as they stated on their website so far no money back.

Business

Response:

The customer was issued a refund in the amount of $54.99 the same day it was requested, Monday, September 22, 2014. The e-mail that was sent to the customer states:"(9/22/2014 3:31 PM)Good afternoon [redacted],

Hope your day is going well.

I have processed a $54.99 refund back to your card. It should appear with your card provider in 3-5 business days.

Review: Carfax has incorrect information listed on my car. It states that the airbag has been deployed and that is not true. They do not provide a phone number to contact them. My internet research revealed that incorrect information on their reports are rampant. Mistakes happen, but apparently they have more than their fair share. Their error is costing me money on selling my car and purchasing a new car in a timely manner.Desired Settlement: I need my report fixed immediately! This is their error and they hide behind email.

Business

Response:

CARFAX resolved this matter with the customer on July 1, 2014. CARFAX removed the airbag deployment based on insurance company information provided by the customer even though the police report does still indicate the airbag deployed.

Review: Carfax advertisement of "Unlimited CARFAX Reports only $54.99" is missing a lot more information concerning their pricing. Unlimited means, "not bounded by exceptions; without any limits or restrictions; and/or not limited in number or amount". I should not be signing in on the 40th day thinking, "I can just access my account on Carfax and get a Carfax report". Actually, I can't! So I read the Carfax's Customer Agreement and see that my $54.99 was only good for 30 days. Base on my aforementioned definition of "Unlimited". 30 days is not unlimited. Really, CARFAX!Desired Settlement: First of all, I don't won't a full refund. Charge me for the one vehicle Carfax I conducted and return the rest to me. Remove the "Unlimited" and the green color from their advertisement webpage, and then add "For 30 Days Only". Thanks you!

Business

Response:

Please contact our customer support team to request a refund of the unused portion of your account. [redacted]

With the Unlimited plan, you can run an unlimited number of CARFAX Vehicle History Reports using the U.S. license plate for 30 days. The details of the plan are listed on the order page under the Customer Agreement, which each customer is required to read before placing an order. It is displayed on the purchase confirmation screen, on the receipt, in the receipt email, and listed in the account upon logging in.

Carfax advertises an unlimited package, but it is actually unlimited only to search license plates. Therefore, if you need to research vehicles offered at dealerships you will pay the unlimited pricing to only receive 3 reports. This is a rip off
