The Instant Checkmate website is very action-oriented with lots of flashy graphics and (presumably fake) progress bars that give the appearance of hundreds of servers grinding away furiously to gather and sort the data you want, just for youThis is a warning sign---stay away!!!!! Out of curiosity I kept clickingAfter several minutes of waiting (as if their database servers were built on old TRS-80's) they finally had the information for me, for a fee of courseIt would've been nice if they had been up front about that before wasting my time, but it's not like it was unexpectedI said, "Pffft! No way!" And I closed the windowBut wait! A popup appeared with the word "CONGRATULATIONS" (all upper case) offering a full trial membership for only $1! In a startling lack of judgement, I figured, what the heck, it's only a dollarI was further satisfied when I went to the Revdex.com's site and saw that not only were they a member, but they had a B+ ratingNot great, but I assumed (yes, I know what assume really means) that it meant that they weren't a scamWhen I examined the information they had provided, it wasn't anything I couldn't have found on Google, like old addresses and possible relativesSeveral of the addresses were incorrect, as were the divorce records which were either just a data dump of people with my name, or a claim that I had been divorced over a dozen times(Once was enough, thank you very much.) But I could get even more information if I paid out yet another $20-$30! (I forget how much.) No thank youBut then I discovered that I was going to be billed $monthly for the meager information I had unless I called their 1-number to cancel my account (no canceling online apparently)If it wasn't for PayPal's email about the recurring transaction, I wouldn't have known this until I had gotten my statementThe customer service rep I spoke with said that it was clearly stated during the transactionIf it was, it wasn't clear enough because I totally missed it, and I'm usually careful about these sorts of thingsInstant Checkmate uses deception and misdirection to coax you into ponying up the cashSince I wasn't willing to pay up the big bucks, I don't know how useful the information they provide isBut even the big guns have been notorious for providing data on folks (remember ChoicePoint?) using the "We gather information, not make it" excuse, so I'd still take it with a grain of saltI'm very embarrassed for myself for going past the first page; I should've known betterI did know betterBut I let my curiosity take command of the few brain cells I had leftOh, and one more thing, just to add insult to injuryI received a junk email that managed to dodge my spam filterWhen I hit a "where did you get my email" link they claimed I had signed up for their mailing list fromwait for itinstantcheckmate.comBe afraidBe very afraid

standard 1-month membership, you will be billed $immediately upon purchase
and $every month thereafter, unless you cancel. If your payment for a full term is declined
due to insufficient funds, Instant Checkmate reserves the right to bill in monthly installments at
the rate you selected

cancel your membership, including any trial or nonstandard membership at any
