Monterey Financial Services Reviews (229)

I have had nothing but problems with this company even though I did not sign any contract with Monterey Financial my loan was transfered to them before I even knew. They do not help or reason with forced clients now that the rep. failed to explain how my payment plan would work I am now in debt because of the additional $1,300 principal they are adding on to my loan which I should be done paying next month.

Review: Monterey Financial administers a contract for [redacted] regarding a website developed for us. They sent us a payment coupon book with dated monthly payment stubs which were sent to Monterey Financial Services, PO BOX 801130, Kansas City, MO 64180-1130. The last billing coupon in the coupon book was sent on 6-4-13 with a notation in the memo line that it was the final payment. I received a nasty message left on a general office voice mail by "[redacted]" stating he "had left numerous messages which had been ignored. He needed to be contacted immediately regarding an unpaid debt." When reached by phone he stated we owed a final payment of $499 and a late fee balance of $5. When I told him all coupons in the payment book they sent had been returned he argued that only 11 of 12 payments had been made. While this is an accurate statement he would offer no explanation as to why only 11 coupons were sent if 12 payments were required. I agreed to send a payment of $499 but requested that the late fee balance be removed since it was their error that the 12th payment coupon was not included. He refused and stated they would report the business to the major credit reporting agencies for a bad debt of $6 and that interest would continue to accrue until the late fee was paid in full.

He lied about calling the office multiple times and leaving multiple messages. No other phone calls or communications were received other that the 8-5-13 voice mail. He ignored the fact that the cashed 6-4-13 check clearly states final payment. If a 12th payment was in fact due why would Monterey Financial Services wait more than 2 months to contact us. In the past if the mailed payment was 1 day late a service person would be on the phone demanding immediate payment by credit card. Under duress and threat I am paying the requested late fee. This is an unethical company with poor business practices and underhanded collection techniques.Desired Settlement: Refund late fee of $5.00 and a letter of apology.

Response:

[redacted] entered into a contract with [redacted] on July 20, 2012.

As stated in the complaint [redacted] signed a

contract for 12 monthly payments of $499.00. Monterey Financial subsequently

purchased the contract from [redacted]. Upon purchase Monterey

Financial sent out a welcome letter and coupon book to the address listed on

the contract. The contract contained 12 coupons slips. 11 of the 12 slips in

the coupon book had a preprinted minimum payment amount and the final coupon

stated to contact our office for the final payoff amount. The final coupon

states to contact our office to ensure that consumer contact us to get a final

payoff amount in order to account for any over payment or short payments in

previous months.

Review: I purchased a dog from a pet store named petland in round lake beach illinois, on the terms of a financing offer that I would have 90 days to pay off a purchase made with no interest and no set payments in that time frame as per verbal agreement. They state after such time that what I was told is wrong and still had to make 3 equal payments in the 90 days covering the balance, that is not what I was told in store and I want the chance to pay the correct original ammount.Desired Settlement: I would like to be given the chance to pay my original purchase amount per my 90 days same as cash agreement, which does not expire until may 15th.

Response:

Mr. [redacted] voluntarily entered into a retail installment contact

for a Siberian husky puppy and various pet supplies on February 11, 2013. I

have attached a copy of the contract for review. The contract included a 90 day

same as cash clause that states “This contract offers terms of 90 Days Same as

Cash if, within the first 90 days of the contract, Buyer makes monthly payments

on a timely basis and no payment is returned…” Mr. [redacted] signed the contract in

3 locations and initialed in 4 additional locations indicating that he agreed

to the terms and conditions outlined within the contract.

Review: On May 1st acct.rep.[redacted] From Monterey financial serv. contacted me regarding past due amount for a company called travel to better credit.Which he claimes I signed up for on the internet I never did. That lead me to check my cheaking account I then notice they have been charging my checking account Feb.2,2013 $149.00,Mar.1,2013 $50,April 1,2013 $50 May 1, 2013 $50 Total=$299.00. Iniatialy I thought this was a company whom I do have credit whith (Monterey credit service) almost the same name.Thats why I did'nt notice the transactions with my checking account.Desired Settlement: I like this matter resolved and my money refunded to me ($299).I do'nt and never needed there service. There service is to help people fix there credit. I own a house and two cars for the last three years.

Response:

In response to the complaint recieved:

While Monterey Financial Services has been advised by [redacted] that[redacted] did in fact sign up for this contract on 1-20-13 via their website, [redacted] has agreed to cancel the contract. Monterey Financial has also taken the necessary steps to have the payments that [redacted] made, credited back to him. However, The total amount [redacted] paid was $249, not $299, as the payment of $50 on 4-1-13 was returned unpaid due to insufficient funds. The amount refunded to [redacted] will be $249 accordingly.

Review: On May 20th of 2014 I financed a car repair through the FlexPlay plan offered by [redacted], which my mechanic, [redacted], presented to me since I could not afford the neccessary work that needed to be done at the time. It was an emergency for me because I absolutely need my car for work. The total job cost was $601.23. In order to finance the job, [redacted] required a cash down payment of $95.29, which I paid, which brought the amount that I needed financed to $505.94.

The Flexplay plan was presented to me as a 90 days same as cash financing plan starting on June 20th. And I was pretty confident that I could pay off the financed amount within the 90 days. My first payment was slotted for 6/20/2014 and instead of paying the $95.27 monthly payment they listed, I upped it to $150 a month in order to pay it off within the 90 day period. A couple days after I signed the agreement with my mechanic, I received a letter in the mail from Monterey Financial Services saying that FlexPay Plus assigned my account to Monterey Financial Services and that my balance was $1,143.24. I assumed that the $1,143.23 only applied if I made the minimum payments instead of the higher payments I planned on making (which I have made since June 20th). I called Monterey Financial Services today in order to make my final payment, which I assumed would be the remaining balance of the $505.94, which at this point should only be $55.94 because I have paid $150 every month since June 20th. They said that in order to close out the account I would need to pay $297.68 in interest and that would be my final payment. They said that my deadline to get the same as cash deal was August 18th, only two days prior to my payment date. August 18th was never communicated to me and I feel that it is unfair for me to pay almost 60% interest when I technically did not miss the "90" day deadline. I also feel that [redacted] is at fault too.Desired Settlement: I would like to only pay my true remaining balance under the 90 days same as cash plan of $505.94 that I signed up for, not the exorbitant interest fee Monterey Financial Services is saying I have to pay to close this account. I have made my payments on time within 90 days and have played by the rules. I feel that I should have been notified by a representative that August 18th was the cutoff date to not have to pay interest. The only date that was reitereated to me was the 20th, the 18th was never brought up. Even the representative at Monterey Financial Services that I spoke with today apologized that the August 18th deadline was not communicated to me. I feel as though companies such as [redacted] and Monterey Financial Services take advantage of people who are already in a financially challenged position and I also feel that they are unethical in their practices.

Response:

In response to the complaint received:

Despite the fact that [redacted] 90 Days Same as Cash Option of his contract (attached) clearly outlines the fact that the expiration of the 90 Days Same as Cash was 8-18-14, Monterey has agreed to honor the 90 day agreement. As this was explicitly outlined in the agreement he voluntarily entered into, it is unfair of [redacted] to suggest that Monterey Financial, or [redacted] has operated under any unfair or unethical conduct. Arrangements have already been made with [redacted] to pay the remaining amount to satisfy the 90 Day Same as Cash Option, to satisfy the loan.

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and find that this resolution would be satisfactory to me. I will wait for the business to perform this action and, if it does, will consider this complaint resolved. Also, I would like to note that the interest Monterey Financial services charges is exorbitant (which is where the question of ethics comes into place), they should at least allow a grace period and/or reminder that the 90 day same as cash deadline is coming up so their customers are not caught unaware. With that said, I'm glad that they have chosen to honor the initial 90 day same as cash option.

Review: In January 2015 my girlfriend purchase a Golden Retrievers from [redacted] for the selling price of $1,999.00 plus interest. I was informed that I would have 14 payments of $157.64. Moreover, I was going to finance that amount with Monterey Financial. In a couple of minutes I received a message in my mobile with a box to sign the contract. Later when I got home I went back to that same link to and fully read the contract it was not available anymore (I was also unaware that this company is a paperless statement finance company). I never suspected that I was one more victim that had just been dragged to Monterrey Financial skim. Indeed a classic an example of the “7 U.S. Code § 6b - Contracts designed to defraud or mislead”

My bank account start to be automatically charged for the $157.64 monthly. This past August, there was not enough funds in my bank account for the payment and I needed to contact Monterey Financial to straight things up. During this phone call I was informed that the total principal amount was $ 5388.59. I question the amount because I had purchase a puppy for 1999.00 + interested. I was then unformed that this amount was related to a lease, not a financing contract.

I felt pretty mislead and deceived. During the whole time I was the impression we bought this dog, I DID NOT LEASE IT. They were very misleading on this whole process!

I ask you, who would purchase a dog for $5,000.00??? I truly appreciate you looking into this matter. I will continue to make payments to reach what the purchase price was of our dog. I eagerly await your response.

Please note that I am not the first person to be caught in their skim. I found 3 other people with the same complaints here at the Revdex.com website. This needs to stop. This company needs to held accountable and not be allowed to keep scamming customers.

What it all comes down to is, I want a fair deal. I pay all my bills but it has to be fair. I am a single father and I work very hard for my salaryDesired Settlement: For the company to make the correct adjustment to the agreed purchase price of our $1,999.00 plus the interest - $2,206.96. I have paid $ 1,734.04. I owe $ 472.92 and this should be the remaining balance.

Response:

In response to the complaint received:

In January of 2015, [redacted] entered into a lease agreement with [redacted] Financing for the purchase of a Golden Retriever (copy of lease agreement attached). This contract was purchased, and assigned to Monterey Financial Services on 1-13-15 to service the terms of the lease agreement. Upon receipt of the complaint, and after researching the matter with [redacted], [redacted] Financing has advised Monterey Financial that they have since reached out to [redacted] and come to a resolution due to a misunderstanding at the inception of the agreement. Monterey Financial has been advised that it was agreed that [redacted] would be responsible to pay the amount financed on the contract (an amount of $524.86) which will be paid to Monterey Financial on 11-16-15.

Review: Received a call in September from Monterey Financial Services looking for a [redacted]. Indicated I was not she. The individual wanted my name. Told him this want not important, I was not [redacted] and he had the wrong number. He then insisted I was her and was trying to avoid collections. Again told him I was not. He became aggressive and I hung up. In early November, received several calls from a 760 numbers. Assumed it was an artist I was working with and returned the call. It was Monterey Financial. Indicated to them I was not the person they were looking for and asked they refrain from calling me. The same man was on the phone and proceeded to ask my name. He came back after checking to see if I had an account and then told me I was the person who pretended to be Stephenie [redacted] in September. Said I never pretended to be her and asked him to please stop calling me. He became extremely aggressive and threatening. I told him to stop calling or I would report the case. He told me to go ahead and continued to be rude and aggressive. I hung up in frustration.Desired Settlement: I want a formal apology from this company for the harassment and abuse received from this individual and that they stop bothering me with unnecessary phone calls.

Response:

I have tried searching for the account and/or phone call

recording that [redacted] references in her complaint, however without the

specific details of when the call occurred I am unable to locate it. I searched for the phone number provided by

Ms. [redacted] in the complaint, however the number does not reference in our

system. It is possible that the number

was deleted. I tried searching for an

account under the name of [redacted], however I was unable to locate an

account that indicated a call made to ###-###-####. Monterey records all of their calls and takes

customer service seriously as indicated by our A+ Revdex.com rating. I would be happy to research further if Ms.

[redacted] can provide more specific details – dates the calls occurred and the

phone number called along with the representative’s name who called. Otherwise please notify me if any future

calls occur so I can locate the account.

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

Regards,

A return call was made on 10/28/14 to ###-###-#### asking they stop harrassing me. At this point, the "Collections" person, who did not give a name, insisted I was the person who pretended to be [redacted] in September when they first started calling. Will contact Verizon for additional calls and dates of those calls. Since the number above is the number listed on their website, they DID call me and behave rudely. I do not have to provide personal information to unsolicited callers and have never had an account with this company nor dealt with this company in the past. Dr. [redacted]

Business

Response:

All of our calls are recorded at Monterey. I tried searching for the return call made on

10/28/14 by Dr. [redacted] to our corporate number however since we are three

separate call centers, there are hundreds of calls made on that day. I was unable to locate a call from

###-###-#### on that day to be able to listen to the call recording to identify

the individual and address the issue. I

want to have the call reviewed and address it if there is a training

issue. If the individual did in fact

behave rudely, I will provide Dr. [redacted] with an apology letter, however I

need to be able to identify who called Dr. [redacted] to direct the complaint to

the appropriate department and have it addressed with the individual

involved. If Dr. [redacted] can provide me with the phone

number that she called in from, I will be able to search that number on

10/28/14 and locate the call to listen to it.

Again, it is possible that the number was deleted and if this is the

case Dr. [redacted] will not be receiving any further calls. However in order to ensure this I need to

confirm the number we called was in fact made to ###-###-#### and try to locate

the account to remove it completely.

Monterey takes customer service seriously as indicated by our A+ Revdex.com

rating and wants to resolve this matter in a timely manner, however we need to

be able to research it and require the above information to do so.

Regards,

The telephone number called numerous times was 928-961-6535. I'm sure Verizon has records of the many calls made to this phone. During those calls I was accused of being a [redacted] and attempting to avoid collections. When I called to let them know they had the wrong number, the individual responding was rude and insistent I had PRETENDED TO BE [redacted]. This is insane.

Business

Response:

Dr. [redacted],

I proactively contacted Monterey because the money for my payment was still in my account. I wanted to provide a debit card because due to fraudulent activity my bank blocked ACH debits using my checking account number. The lady advised me that there would be a 25.00 return fee for NSF. It was not a NSF. They finally realized that but still wanted to assess 15.00 to change from checking to debit. I added the additional money to my account to cover the 15.00 and paid online. The lady I spoke to the second time said it would be another 25.00 BECAuse the debit was declined. REALLY I PAID ON LINE......this has been the WORST EXPERIENCE EVER. They called my cell and I couldn't answer. THEY CALLED ALL OF MY REFERENCES. REALLY??? There should be a time lapse if they have not heard from the customer then start with the unprofessional aggressive collection!!! I ABSOLUTELY would rather sit on the floor, go sell my body do whatever was necessary to get the things I need than to EVER use this program. Because it is a program for those with less than perfect credit they group everyone into the same category.

Review: On Feb. 10th, 2015 I called Monterey Financial Services to pay my bill off. They gave me the pay off price as 2930.55. When I look at my bill they don't show it as paid off. When I call and speak to customer service they say they will fix it and send me a letter in the mail. Its still not fixed after 4 weeks. This bill was transferred from [redacted]. No one notified me that [redacted] had sold my bill either. They say I have a remaining balance online of over 3 thousand dollars.Desired Settlement: I want my account to show paid in full. I want a signed letter this was paid. I want my credit files to showed paid in full.

Business

Response:

In response to the complaint received:

[redacted] spoke to our Finance Supervisor on 3-18-15 (subsequent to this complaint being filed), who explained that her obligation to the [redacted] contract has been satisfied as of 2-10-15. The balance that is reflecting is the remaining balance on the full term of the lease that [redacted] entered into. Since [redacted] satisfied her early buyout obligation, this remaining balance will be closed, and reflect a $0 balance by the end of this month. A paid in full letter has been sent in the interim.
